Obama’s Lincoln

Looking at many of the comments here, the republicans have not learnt that the country has turned itself away from politics that invites from negative human emotions. Reserve your hate derived emotions for your domestic relationships. Politics and policies should be independent of this. How else can you explain such vitriol for a not yet sworn in president that has actually not done anything wrong yet and has advocated mostly post-partisan and even centrist opinions.

Right now Palin is being attacked by Gingrich and has been called hillbilly looting from coarst to coast and egg head by McCain camp. Huckabee and Romney just viciously shot at each other verbally. The excuse is that this is what happens to loser. Well the worst we heard when Kerry lost was that Edwards refused to play attack dog role well - even after losing 3 straight presidency - nothing vitriolic. Why cant republicans just repudiate personal attacks and hatefulness while developing a good idealogy. The hateful simply gravitate to this ideas more than necessary.

President-elect Barack Obama's inauguration is expected to draw 1 million-plus to the capital, and already some lawmakers have stopped taking ticket requests and hotels have booked up. Some people are bartering on Craigslist for places to stay for the Jan. 20 ceremony when the Illinois senator takes the oath of office. They are offering cash or even help with dishes for residents willing to open up their homes..

LisianVa your plan would actually cost 3 trllion dollars do the math

"Obama will certainly have to back a big stimulus package to counter the deepening recession." I want to ask if Obama might look at my suggestion shown here that would get our economy moving faster than the current bailout / rescue package put forth and already in the works, although with no apparent transparency, oversight or accountability..

I???m not smart, especially when it comes to economics [OMG I sound like McCain], but I want to ask anyone blogging what would have been so wrong about the bailout package being handled another, completed unrelated way? My idea is to help Main Street DIRECTLY. Since there are 300+ million people living in the US, the Fed could have given each one of us $1M apiece. The $1M would have certain stipulations regulated by the Fed and attached as listed [more or less]:

1.] A specified portion would be mandated to be put into savings,
2.] A designated portion would go toward paying off all mortgages, solving the housing industry crisis [unless the homeowner has a mortgage worth more than $1M, in which case he does not require Government assistance],
3.] Another portion would be mandated and set aside for one adult in the family to attend college to obtain an education in ???green??? technology,
4.] All incurred credit card debt for that family would have to be paid in full and no further credit card use for a pre-determined time as stipulated by the Fed,
5.] A certain portion must be spent to allow retailers to regain profits so our economy would immediately start to grow.

Since my plan would only require $3+ MILLION [that is $1M to each American adult] instead of the $700 BILLION relief package Congress approved to be handed DIRECTLY to financial institutions. Wouldn???t my plan not only STIMULATE OUR ECONOMY, HELP MAIN STREET FIRST RATHER THAN WALL STREET FIRST, EDUCATE many adults who have been left behind due to financial or other reasons, move RETAIL SALES toward an incline rather than the decline it???s currently facing, and KEEP BANKS FROM FAILING BECAUSE PEOPLE WOULD DEPOSIT AND SAVE [required savings as above], perhaps even increase their profits along with making CREDIT CARD FUNDS more readily available? It would also PUT A STOP TO THE MORTGAGE CRISIS, which the Fed stated was the UNDERLYING REASON for the financial crisis in the first place. Is this stupid, or could it still work or have worked with money left over from the $700B and that remaining money could be used to help resuscitate some banks if necessary? At least with my plan, the Fed would have a definite guarantee that no failure would occur as with the bailout to AIG and banks which has no guarantee.

The only type of currency that should have Obama's picture on it should be the Foodstamp because that is what he and his party believe in.....Welfare!

Personally, I find it almost blasphemous to compare Obama to Lincoln right now. Wait until Obama is done, then lets compare. Obama has a lot to learn, and very little time to learn it. IF (big if, he's a lawyer) he really is smart, he just might learn from previous presidents and be able keep the boat at neutral buoyancy. He won't be able to refloat it and he may well sink it. Just because one is well spoken and has admirable intentions, does not mean one has actual leadership ability. Keep your life jackets handy, it is quite likely to get a bit wet in here. BTW, for all you Obamakins, take heart, if McCain were in Obamas place, I'd already have the life jacket on and be looking for the lifeboats.... Face the truth folks, we are in for a rough voyage until real leadership is put into the White House and the Ship can be saved.

For those who think that it is hopeful to have Obama model his presidency on that of Abraham Lincoln should look more closely at what Abraham Lincoln (AL) did to America.
AL was opposed by the South because they provided 85% of the tax revenue and got none of the benefit. He had already announced plans to increase the tax rate from 37% to 47%. Sound familiar?
AL was elected without any support from the South, so they knew that they had no recourse against his wasteful plans for Northern ???internal improvements??? financed exclusively with Southern taxes.
AL chose to go to war, killing hundreds of thousands of citizens, rather than lose his taxes (Ft. Sumter was a tax office, not a slave market).
AL imprisoned 3000 Northern newspaper editors and publishers who deigned to criticize his war plans
AL used federal troops to destroy news presses of opposing press.
AL used federal troops to prevent legally elected State legislatures from meeting for fear that they would embrace secession.
AL created puppet State governments replacing legally elected governments who were opposed to his plans.
AL regularly ignored the counsel of wise and experienced advisors, generals, etc. to prescribe the minute details of administration.
AL directed his battle-hardened federal troops to make war on un-armed women, children and old men for no reason other than to leave them destitute: burning their homes, their crops; killing their animals leaving them totally unprotected for the coming winter.
AL issued the Emancipation Proclamation two years into the war primarily in the hope that it would cause slaves to rise-up against the women and children left at home, murdering them just as had happened 70 years before during the slave up-rising in Haiti. A secondary reason was to prevent England and France (both of which had outlawed slavery) from supporting the Southern war effort.
AL listened approvingly as his generals bragged about plundering tens of millions of dollars of private property from Southern civilians.
AL did in fact despise slavery, but he was no friend of the slave: he was as racist then as Obama???s pastor of 20 years is today: just from a different perspective.
Lincoln was a very capable and cunning politician. He knew how to manipulate people???s emotions and never failed to do so when it served his purposes. He was really good with words, and was elected mostly because of his abilities as a public speaker.
Lincoln too was one of the least experienced Presidents ever to be elected to the office. His blind ambition, un-tempered by experience drove America into the most destructive period in our history.

Oh Yeah, did I forget to mention that Lincoln (a republican) also set the blacks free????????????

Obama is no Lincoln. Reagan wrote is own speeches for the most. Many presidens have drafted their own speeches this isn't anything new. Who wrote Washington speeches, or Jeffersons, Adams, I can on and on. To many people in this country forget we have had 43 presidents over 200 years. I don't believe Obama writes his own speeches as this is the first time I'm reading/hearing this.

Obama has one asset Lincoln did not.

A sycophantic press.[led by Dick Wolffe and his fellow NEWSWEAK cronies,whom as we see,operate in the echo-chamber of Obamunism,or, provide the man with unquestioning loyalty,in their capacity of moving through friendly media waters[Wolffe,for instance,rarely appears anywhere but MSNBC].

Lincoln was a differant matter. Universally disliked by the press who saw him as a hayseed,he was,in the estimation of writers for the main New England newspapers,a ''first rate,second-rate man''. ''He has no-one to bet on his head''.said the foreign London Times. ''A silly,flat,dishwatery speech'' said the New York Tribune on Lincolns Gettysburg Address. Lincoln returned their favours. ''All noise and gas'',he said of the American Fourth Estate.''My friends do me a favour by providing me with these Democratic newspapers'' he said of those editors who villified him in print.[''Lincoln wants another 50,000 victims'',said La Crosse,Wisconsins newspaper]. As with Sarah Palin,routine lies and falsehoods were spread by hostile newspapers in order to garner more currency in the growing ''Copperhead''movement. Lincoln paid himself in gold bars. his wife Mary had a ''social disease'',marked by Lincolns infirm children of whom. two would die while he was president. He was secretly amassing a fortune by engaging in black market cotton trading sneaked across the lines or shipped by blockade runners. He was a ''flatboat tyrant'' a ''fool'',a ''brigand'',an ''idiot'', a ''gorilla'', a ''widowmaker'',an ''imbecile'',and more.

Obama comes in with none of this baggage. The leftwinged press will find means to make a leftwinged scheme seem centrist. But even the NEWSWEAK hacks are forced to admit that such things as the unionist ''card check'',the federalization of 401 k retirement plans,and the repeal of TAFT-HARTLEY provisions will be the tripwire that watchers will be gauging to ensure that Obama keeps his promise of a ''post-partisan''America.

What is amazing is how there is a fanaticism to make Mr. Obama into something either we want or someone who he is not. There is NOTHING on his resume which even conjures up Lincoln - I guess Lincoln didn't vote "present" 135 times or lead so undistinguished a career. Nor did Obama expereicne the type of failure that Lincoln had.. Part of the problem is what Tom Browkaw said on the Charlie Rose show - we just don't know who Barack Obama is. When the inauguration occurs on Jan 20th, the world will be exposed to a rookie - a man who can speak a good game, but has no record to prove it. While he has talked about "Team of Rivals," the reality is that he has surrounded himself with former Clinton hacks who failed the first time. If he was really serious he would consider more people for his cabinet who don't think like him - but I am not holding my breath. Mr. Obama is a Chicago politican, part of the machine. There are many debts to pay, and many hands out to fill. This will distract him from doing the nation' s business, and we will be worse off for it, I guess.
