Lincoln was 8 years in the Illinois Senate.
He ran, but was not elected into the U.S. Senate.
Lincoln went straight from State Senate to being elected US President.
Repubs in Lincoln's era, were philosophically more like our democrats today.

      Nope. Just from our government.

Why does that coin with Obama have "In God We Trust" on it? Don't liberals feel the need to remove God from everything on this planet?

You say the country is "right of center". I think you haven't seen that many are pointing out this is a mirage. More people claim to be conservative than liberal (though these are substantial minorities in both cases), but the definitions of both have changed. A majority of the country holds values that would be considered liberal 16 years ago, though a larger minority claims to be conservative than liberal. If anything, we are a left-of-center country.

Liberal, conservative, Centrist,Left and Right. All of these terms are used to pigeon hole someone.

If a conservative supported the right to choose, would they become a liberal? If a person was a right to lifer and was in favor of entitlements would they become a liberal? If a person was for tax cuts for big corporations and was for recognizing Cuba, what would they be? If they were against the Iraq war but for sanctions against Iran and N. Korea, what would they be?

If a person was for the right to choose, a gainst the Iraq war, for tax breaks for the rich, for legalizing illegal immigrants, against a bail out for the Big 3, for a bailout of the banks and on and on and on. What would they be.

I'll bet there aren't many on the blogs here who would appreciate being labeled because of single issue differences.

Me? What's my label? Well hell, except for about 10,000 issues, I'm a Moderate Centriist just like the rest of you.

This is the sort of racist garbage I have come to expect from the right, over the last few weeks.

  • Posted By: Bass Pro @ 11/17/2008 8:54:22 AM

Why is the party of hate so enamored with Lincoln. The Republicans are segregationist and their party gives comfort to the KKK . When the Civil rights act was signed by LBJ all of the Democrats in the South became Dixiecrats later to become Republicans. Ask the Southern Republican what they thinks of Lincoln.

It's a hoot when they describe the GOP as the party of Lincoln. Just think of it, a Republican from Georgia praising Lincoln. Pathetic pandering!

They are trying to make amends?

      • Posted By: Bass Pro @ 11/17/2008 10:02:58 AM

Never better. What redboy said below is pretty much what the small town southerner feels. will they rise up? of course not. For them to want revenge against the north for the unspeakable things they did during the last months and post war is understandable . In many small cities they still fly the CSA flag over courth houses and schools. At the same time the larger cities in the south are growing and are becoming more liberal and Democratic. the Republican has kept the small town southerner uneducated and poor. They've never had another life and don't miss what the rest of us already have. Over time the small towns disappear and the mindset changes. The citizens are starting to wise up and the future is brighter. I wouldn't underestimate the power that these revenge seekers have in small towns, but it is limited to those crazy enough to live near them. I wouldn't overestimate them either for the same reason.

        be good

BTW, Pia -- Ayers' bombing of the Pentagon went like this:

A woman made her way into a washroom and dropped a 1.5 pound bomb down a drain. It ruptured some pipes and subsequent leakage ruined some computers.

A sufficient quantitative difference becomes a qualitative difference.

Cassandra, I appreciate your comment..however, I have a migraine and can't think clearly right now..so please gently explain to me what you mean. Lol. Thank you.

Back then they didnt have as effective meds or research that went into its causes thought. But still. Migraines are no fun. . .my sister inherited it from my mom. Thank goodness I dont get them.

Wow. So a woman Ayers directed placed a bomb in the Pentagon, and though it caused extensive damage, (more than a few pipes) no one was killed. You seem to be okay with this?

Hey V! I don't believe Cassandra is okay with what William Ayres did. IMO, she feels that it was not as serious as it has all been made out to be. I'm not okay with it..it was an act of terrorism after all. Btw, I'm listening to Talk Talk's it's My Life. First time. Stunning version....it is the original after all.

        • Posted By: Vypurr @ 11/16/2008 8:30:10 PM

Hi Pia... anything to do with a terrorist attack is serious to me. While I'm sure she didn't condone the act, it did seem like she discounted it as almost unimportant.

Enougha that! You gotta love TT's original version of IML... Most remakes however, aren't very good, but Gwen Stefani stepped up to the plate on her version! I like them both.

          • Posted By: Pia1981 @ 11/16/2008 8:45:11 PM

I too take terror attacks very seriously, including Ayres. I feel that Cassandra was only trying to stress that William Ayres attack did not injure anyone.

I love both It's My Life versions. Both beautiful voices. Thanks for telling me about TT. I'm listening to both tonight...also indulging in The Smith's and Morrissey....another fabulous band.

There are major parallels between Lincoln and Obama in terms of their rise, style and professional history. Obama is an honest and authentic man. So much so, that the other Side is having some problems believing in it for now, but if they can put down their preconceptions for a while, they will come to see that Obama is on everybody's side and will listen to everyone, and make good compromises.

However, I am going to say something which is not so peace-making, and I think it is deserved and true.
Not all dems give free passes, folks!

IF ANYTHING at all happens to Obama.................McCain and Palin are toast:
After endorsing hate-filled robocalls and mailings and unsolicited emailings around this country for weeks on end, and for purposely targeting known racist areas,
they should be made to STEP DOWN from public life.

McCain and Palin have contributed vastly to ignorance, hate and racism in this country and should not get away with it. Get rid of this kind of irresponsible 'politican', and send a message that goes out to everyone in this country:

Hate rhetoric is not OK and there will be consequences, no matter who you are.
None of us are immune to consequences.

yeah there are lots of parallels between Hitler and Obama also lets see they were both community organizers, They both want to nationalize everything, now all we have to do is wait and see how many people Obama kills because they disagree with him.

Ayres and Obama were not buddies..they were only acquaintences. I know you may probably be skeptical about wanting to visit HuffingtonPost but if interested there may be article/interview with William Ayres that you may want to read. But that does not change the fact that Ayers has never been sorry for what he did but he is sorry he did not do more!! How do you forgive someone like that!! It is a well known fact what he did so don't even try to say he didn't do anything!!!

If he believes what happened on 9/11 was right, then he is a kook who needs help and belongs in a mental institution, therefore he needs compassion as does anyone else in the same condition. In conclusion, what do you want from me? To say it is wrong of Obama to be friends with him? I won't.

But these are the kind of people Obama has as friends, maybe it doesn't matter to you because no what you hear about Obama it doesn't matter! But just like you have the right to think what you want to think, there are other people like me that see something wrong with the friendships Obama has! I guess it would be pretty boring if we all were to think the same way.

  • Posted By: Rocheux @ 11/16/2008 11:45:11 PM

I knew Obama'd win. The polls did not really show the groundswell of young people (18-29) who were going to vote for him, for few have landline phones, they have cell phones and I understand cell phones were polle little if at all. I say let us give this fellow a chance. He has the weight of the world on his shoulders. After all, in every recession we ever had (even the Great Depression) except for one, a Rep. president was in the White house. As for the angry Republicans who do all the cusswords and ugly posts, throttle back if you will. Let's see what time will do. Rather than continue to spew hate and snide remarks, either stand aside or help our country by having all of us pull in the same direction for a change. Listen to MSNBC & CNN for a little bit each day to be sure you are seeing both sides of the picture, because you surely won't watching Fox News pushing the agenda of the radical foreigner who came to control America's media; Rupert Murdoch. Dr. Stan R., Mesa, AZ USA (Air Force Veteran too)

    • Posted By: ctruskey @ 11/17/2008 3:18:01 AM

Wow you are a Dr. and you really believe every recession had a republican in the white house except one and you don't say which one. Okay you believe you need to listen to CNN and MSNBC to get one side of view as Fox has the other, so by that arguement you need to watch Fox to get a different point of view then you will get with CNN and/or MSNBC. I watch all these networks and as an independent I believe Fox gives me both sides better then CNN and a whole lot better the MSNBC. Oh you do know Murdoch supported Hillary don't you?

    • Posted By: Forty4 @ 11/17/2008 12:22:08 AM

Here's your stuff on Murdoch... and by the way.... Obama won't be unique. Every president has the weight of the world on his shoulders. It comes with the job.

      http://www.huffingtonpost.com/hilary-rosen/rupert-murdoch-says-obama_b_104018.html

    • Posted By: Forty4 @ 11/17/2008 12:12:52 AM

Glad you knew all that. However, you didn't know Rupert Murdoch was an Obama supporter though. And though we're in a recession, we're no where near the great depression with 25 percent employment. And no, young people like you that are so broke you don't have land line phones don't remember the tax lies Clinton told sixteen years ago that got him into office.

And you want us to listen to biased MSNBC and CNN to get both sides of the story? You gotta be f**king kidding us! Give us a break! You are naive...

I will agree with you about one of your points... let's give the man a chance.

  • Posted By: Rich in NJ @ 11/17/2008 12:25:14 AM

This is not a center right country. At a time when a purportedly conservative president has nationalized banks, labels mean nothing. It is policy positions that accurately reflect where the country stands. On that score, a majority of the country supports progressive policies, be it on taxes, Social Security, health care, etc. Consequently, the country is clearly left of center, but more importantly, people merely want a government that works. Conservatives have spent so much energy trashing the capacity of government to work effectively, that it is little wonder that
when they gain power, they govern so poorly.

You yankees will never wise up to the fact that the South considers Lincoln the most hineous character in American history. His war against the South permenantly separated us from the north. It remains so, and we remain an occupied territory. That will not last. When you are at your weakest, and your worldly enemies are tearing down your front door, we will come from behind and help finish the job.

Why don't you Southerners just secede from the union already? A bunch of unpatriotic loud mouths! Love it, or leave it, that's what I say! If it weren't for Lincoln you Southerners would be currently residing in one of the most backwards countries in the world... instead you live in the most backwards region of the most prosperous country in the world. So go ahead and secede already! The North would be better off without you unpatriotic scum bags.

Not quite a done deal though, as Mr. Bill may have inadvertently thrown a wrench in the old gearbox with all of his fund raising and other financial dealings around the world. I hope Clinton has no problem with the appointment either. Though I don't agree with her, I did feel badly for her during the primaries. The MSM treated her, shall I say, "differently" than Obama. It took SNL to finally expose the MSM hypocrisy. Anyway, I feel she is by far the best qualified for Sec. of State.

You're not alone. While many people had a soft spot for Billy boy, I was not one of them. Mainly because of his lame view on terror, his tax lies that got him in office and Monica Lewinsky.

Hillary will be fine. During the primaries I did not feel badly for her..I was disappointed that she ran a somewhat dirty campaign against Obama. The comment about Robert Kennedy's June ass. was inexcusable, however, I did feel sorry for her after she lost the nomination.

Bill and Monica- I hated him for a long time for it then I forgave him.

Well, I had felt in the second debate, he seemed to be like Lincoln. I feel asleep and woke up initially thinking Lincoln was at the podium.

"(think of President Bush's transformation after 9/11)"

    Say what?

Pre-9/11: insulate the presidency from Constitutional checks and balances, restart the Cold War, invade Iraq, establish hegemony over the Middle East.

Post-9/11: please provide details of dramatic change of course.

"Labor unions want a law that would do away with secret balloting and allow labor organizers to lean on workers to sign a statement demanding a union (the card check)."

Since more than 90% of Americans are not unionized -- the process of organizing involves workers joining the union, the union applying for certification when it has a majority of workers signed up, the company then conducting with impunity an illegal campaign of threats, bribes, layoffs, and general disinformation about shutting down or relocating, followed by a secret ballot. The proposed process would certify the union when a majority of workers has joined it.

The word "lean" does not appear in the legislation. Since the union has no power over unorganized workers such as controlling his/her remuneration, advancement or continued employment, "leans" can only imply threats of violence.

This is scurrilous. Shame on Newsweek.

Obama as Lincoln? You have overlooked a very key basis: LINCOLN HELPED TO FORM A BRAND-NEW, DURABLE THIRD PARTY. He broke completely with both power centers. Obama has shown no such courage, and has shown no such adherence to principle. Obama as Lincoln? What an assinine statement.

Where the hell did you get the idea Lincoln was a unifier.... His election was what pushed the South to secede from the Union. On top of that, his refusal to remove Federal troops from the South started the bloodiest war in American history.

    Unifier my ass.

In the interest of naming a Republican for a President Obama's Cabinet Post.

How about Sean Hannity for Secretary of HATE? If he won't accept there's an unlimited number of Republican Candidates in the GOP Party of Hate.

I am enjoying watching Sean Hannity squirm since Pres. Obama's win!
