The Republican fallacy on health care is that they think that the majority of people have money left over from basic survival to save for anything, much less health care. They don't seem to be able to conceive of the concept that for many many people in this country they have to work multiple jobs just to break even. Saving money is only an option if you make more money than it costs to live. For a lot of us that is not the case.

Who allows this maniac to write anything concerning anyone in this country???

Karl Rove needs to shut up and find a dark hole to crawl in.

I agree that McCain had neither the personality, nor the message.

But turning to the right, with Palin & her God door-opener will be (another ) suicide for Reps...

The truth is John McCain did not have a conservative message he could use against Obama. That is, he wasn't conservative enough. So a lot of people, realizing how close they were on their positions just voted for the younger guy and the more non-Republican. If McCain were actually conservative and constitutional like Ron Paul, he might have won.

  • Posted By: FrustratedConservative @ 11/17/2008 12:24:32 PM

What the GOP dictators do not understand.....
Had McCain not attacked Obama continuously without talking about what he is going to do, he might have won. I had many dem friends that didn't want to vote for Obama, but in those final days before the election, the attack ads were non stop from one side only in indiana, and probably in other battlegrounds too. Obama put out positive messages, McCain and the PACs put out too much hate. The young folks like me don't work that way.

Many of my Republican friends didn't vote with their party because of the way some candidates were treated during the primary. The higher ups of the party chose to push forward faux-conservatives and crucify staunch conservatives that could have easily pulled in all independents. You all know its the truth.

Rove is right there... let it be a free market affair, the crappy candidates will get knocked out. This would have been a whole different election had they not excluded those that wanted to join and make conservatism a good thing.

How about enlisting Ron Paul to lead the lost GOP out of the wilderness. Sound money, limited government, a non-interventionist foreign policy are the linchpins for a truly free society. People are sensing that government is not the answer to our problems. Freedom attracts people from all stripes of society. It is truly the most unifying force we know. When the GOP or Democrats figure this out, they will truly be the party of change

  • Posted By: treetracker @ 11/17/2008 12:15:26 PM

Until the Republican Party figures out that this country wants the political discourse in this country to be respectful and offer solutions rather than divisive slogans, it will stay in the wilderness. But changing the tone will not be enough. There must be concrete viable solutions, not "trickle down" economics. That cause is over, as is "big government." Bush has closed the chapter on those two issues. What we want is government that is efficient and provides the services government needs to provide in a timely way. We want smart people, not "good ole boys", running the country. We're looking for people who really do put their country ahead of their politics. Arguing for the sake of argument does not solve problems.

And Republicans can scream all day long about taxes, but some day some one will be paying this bill. That can't be kicked down the road much further. We will not be able to grow our way out of this. That is a fallacy and deep down everyone knows it. You cannot grow your way out of a $55 trillon dollar (off books) debt. And now we're going to have to spend more to keep people working so the economy doesn't get worse.

So if your Party wants to remain the Party of big business, the "haves and haves more" as Bush put it, and deregulation to the point that $700 billion dollars is needed to keep Wall Street from collapse and toys and drugs from China that can harm our children or ourselves to go unchecked, then keep on keeping on. It will get cold and lonely for your Party in the wilderness.

It's time to check you philosophy at the door and figure out who you want to be in the future. The deregulation argument is dead. The Reaganomics argument is dead. The big government argument is dead, since we now have the largest government in history. And if the Dems are smart, they'll start reducing its size immediately. Parting out government services to the private sector for no-bid cost plus contracts I hope will also die soon. Your Party has done nothing to address the fraud and abuse of these contracts.

The next time you all go into an election cycle, I suggest you leave Reagan where he is - dead and buried.

And, yes, we are primarily a Christian nation, but there are those among us who are not and your party has done nothing but alienate them and has turned Christian values on its ear. And based on what I've seen coming out of the Republican Party in the last few years, few Republican politicians have Christian values. That's only another segment of the population run by Tony Perkins that has been used to continue to divide us.

So basically, the Republican Party has become the problem not the solution to problems. When you figure out the solutions, you may become a viable Party once again. Until then, keep your blankets handy, 'cause you're going to need them.

Yes, those hating, intolerant, bigots, who target other groups unfairly just because they don't have the same views. Yeah, those mean, nasty......Democrats (?!!) who burned Bibles & targeted Christians because the gay marriage proposal failed in CA. Those mean & nasty....Democrats (?!!), who won't let people ask them questions they don't like because they don't have the same views as themselves, such as Joe the Plumber, who asked a simple quesiton about taxes & then had his entire personal life inspected as if he were a candidate for President.. Those mean & nasty....Democrats (?!!) who want talk radio shut down because they don't have the right to free speech, because they are opposed to what WE think. Those mean & nasty...Democrats(?!!) who have totally closed debate on Global Warming, that has as many professionals that disagree with it as agree with it. Those mean & nasty...Democrats (?!!) who supported Barack Obama because it was COOL to have a black leader in power, but call professionals like Condolesa Rice, Colin Powell & Clarence Thomas "Uncle Toms". Those mean & nasty....Democrats (?!!) who had a T-Shirt wearing McCain/Pailin supporter arrested for walking down the street through a group of Obama supporters to reach his parked car! Those mean & nasty...Democrats (?!!) who demand that elections in developing countries be supervised, but won't let military votes be counted in America. Open your eyes & your mind & lose the liberal mindset of superior moral, intellectual, diverse, tolerance from Democrats. It's a total myth.

I don't think the Republicans have to do much of anything right now. Two years of Obama and the Dems together with the gathering recession will be fertile ground for the mid-term elections. It can't get any worse for the Republicans than it is now and they still maintain control of at least 40% of the Congress. The mid term elections should bring them up to 45% of the Congress. When Obama runs again, they can easily defeat him if we are still in a recession and at that point they get 51% of the Congress.

The Reps are not against Latin, but against illegals.

I haven't read a single sensible comment against Rove...

Maybe that is the reason he has been so succesful.

Republicans are too smug to overcome 4 and 9. Their party base is made up of judgemental bigots, and they like it that way. Now spanish speaking immigrants and gays are their targets, since they had to concede blacks. John McCain presented a winning argument, yet it was the base of his own party who did him in.
Here are a couple of losing arguments for Republicans. Let a politically expedient chamelion phony like Romney rise up. Keep focusing on the divisiveness of wedge issues that are less and less important. As the Republican base of ignorance dies off, so will your support.

  • Posted By: katiec @ 11/17/2008 10:36:33 AM

If the republicans are still listening to Rove, than they have not learned a thing.
I do hope this man is punished for his crimes, as, without Bush/Cheny to protect
him, how much longer can he thumb his nose at justice?
Until they quit their postering, finger pointing, panderingf and ego trips, they
will conintue to lose respect of the American people. Until they, for a change, put
the future of the country as a priority, we will cointinue to be the victims.

The talent of a politician is to reach out to other party's constituents without alienating his own people.

That is what Rea-gun did with his Reagan Dems, that's what Arnold ,who gets 60% in blue CA,can do,

We need a constitutional Amendment to the "born in USA " bs....

So many trash people & traitors are..5th gen " Americans "...

Karl Rove's 15 minutes of fame passed in 2006. He should be ignored by all.

    • Posted By: dsqard @ 11/17/2008 9:56:31 AM

The problem with that is that Rove is still the "Pied Piper" to the republicans.

  • Posted By: James Lee @ 11/16/2008 10:45:56 PM

It is quite clear Mr. Rove that you have struck the last nerve of the lunatic radical left which populate these Newsweek blogs. They are livid with anger and have responded to your message with irrational hate and accusations as they are wont to do.

For them to be so incensed means that your comments and advice are right on track. If they think that the Republican party is just going to fade away into the sunset when this is a middle to right country, they have seriously misjudged the situation. You will notice that very few of them have even produced a counter to any of your ten points. Rather, they prefer to spew forth disdain and hatred for you and anything Republican..

Also, if they think President Obama will govern from the center, they are then once more mistaken. It is going to be interesting four years hence to witness what these radicals will be saying about the President after they realize that he cannot deliver on the blue sky promises he made and they learn how much deeper he has stuck his hands into their pocketbooks.

    • Posted By: dsqard @ 11/17/2008 9:45:03 AM

I think this election has proved that this country is more center than right-center. No one believes that the republican party is going to fade into the sunset. Personally, I am center-left but I do believe that we need more than one party to keep things balanced. The problem with the people on the right of center is that they don't think there should be balance. Without balance, we get closer to monarchy than democracy. We have seen the last eight years of "The Emporer's New Clothes" and the country is tired of it. Rove has turned the republican party into the "haves" and damn the "have nots". Obama is going to lead much closer to center than even some of his supporters are going to like. You can't please all of the people all of the time but you can try to make things better for the majority. If the republicans don't start seeing this country as "center" they will lose again in 2010 and in 2012.

Obama is one of the first well educated president, Bush is not one of them, and you republicans are very afraid of that. I have never seen or heard so much, ignorance and fear. One of the first things Obama should do is overall the dreadful education system. Alot of Americans are very delustional and need to come into the 21st century , quick.

Until the Republican Party seperates theology from ideology then we will never again take over the White House. Suggesting that "leaders" like Palin, who was shown to be charming but without substance, should be allowed to stay on the national stage while they learn the issues is lunancy. The American people are not looking for people who not only LEARN on the job but learn all the ISSUES on the job. This is a time for serious people, not those with just blind ambition being directed by God.

Karl Rove pushed George W. Bush toward divisive strategies both domestically and internationally. We can blame Rove along with his friends like Limbaugh for our divisive nation and negative reputation around the world. Rove can be blamed for the Republican Party downfall in 2006 and 2008. He epitomizes the Republican's current image as an 'angry old white man's' party. It's time for you to go away Karl to save the party!

  • Posted By: Michael L @ 11/17/2008 8:49:35 AM

While I respect Rove's instincts, and note that he was capable of leading Bush to victory against the VP of a popular sitting president, with only a TX governor with many personal problems in his background, Rove's advice is contradictory. He says that Reps should reach out to new groups such as the young, but not forget the cultural issues, which are in part what have alienated many young voters.

    Please,short comments...

The lack of political arguments against Rove is clear...

Most comments against him are sentimental & hateful.

Not one can produse a reasonable argument why the policies Rove advocates are wrong....

Some "ifs " are meaningful. The people did not reject the Rep message, but a pair of awful messengers ( pops-barbie) ,choosing a popular promise maker...
