Best known for " Trainspotting " and " 28 Days Later, " the British director delivers a more upbeat tale in his latest, " Slumdog Millionaire, " a rags-to-riches story set in Mumbai.

My Five Most Important Movies
1. "Blood Simple."
Your first film is always your best, as evident with this 1985 film noir written and directed by the Coen brothers.

2. "Elephant Man."David Lynch's second film is an exception to that rule.

3. "Near Dark." One day there will be more Kathryn Bigelows. For now, we can revel in her mastery of the vampire flick.

4. "Audition." This unsettling 2000 film from Japanese auteur Takashi Miike, for men everywhere.

5. "Apocalypse Now."Francis Ford Coppola's Vietnam classic is the only film I never stop watching.

A classic film you haven't seen: "Barry Lyndon." I have a copy, so there's no excuse.

A film you recently revisited with disappointment: "Battle of the Bulge." The first film I ever saw. My dad took me to this; my mum took my twin sister to "The Sound of Music."

A film you hope parents will show kids: "Au Revoir les Enfants." Whenever I see top-10 family films, I always imagine Louis Malle's WWII classic at No. 1.
