Alright, that's IT.

Newsweek, I expect my print copy to arrive without this drivel, and prompt removal of it from the site. As a 10-yr subscriber, I demand retraction, and a profuse apology from Ms. Miller and the editors for having sunk so low, despoiling Newsweek's reputation with ridiculous speculation from deranged people. Otherwise, I will cancel my subscription henceforth.

This is an embarrassment. Let the Rapturists and Apocalypics go into their underground bunkers for 8 years, leaving all us sensible people to straighten out the mess that these irrational fundamentalist religionists have gotten the United States into. It will also relieve those of us who have read revolutionary war-era history and the writings of our founders of the burden of remedially educating the ignorant, Bible-toting nutjobs. Newsflash: the founding fathers of this country were not Christians. Many were atheists, although they only admitted it in private writings widely read AFTER their deaths. Why? Because even they were afraid of violent Christian extremists. Even those among the signers of the Declaration who were of a religious bent were at best Deists and Naturalism followers -- meaning that they did not believe in an anthropomorphic God who followed our every action and actively intervened in human affairs. Rather, some believed in a higher power or god (lower-case) revealed through nature, and accessible by many means, most neither dogmatic nor ritualistic.

The religionists in this country seem to have little understanding of the democratic underpinnings of our nation. There are individual rights which are inalienable -- meaning they cannot be taken away. You may practice your religion as one of them -- but I am free of public policy imposed by your religion, another one. You are free to speak of your faith, and I am equally free to call you irrational and suggest that you keep that irrationality to yourself.


Ugh. I just can't believe that so many people posting here are so blinded by wishful thinking and childhood inculcation that they can't see what is before their very eyes. They have actively avoided reading and absorbing anything -- including detailed and comprehensive knowledge of their own religion's historical and doctrinal contradictions -- which might shake the fantasy that so comforts them and moves them to oppressive behaviors. I grieve for the lost learning, wasted time, and pointless expenditure of energy that mental denial of the truth must cost them, and our species. It's a tragedy.

Anti-Christ means "against Christ." Obama is a Christian and not the anti-Christ. Have you ever considered that instead of one individual, the "anti-Christ" is a vain, damaging, hate-filled, fearful philosophy that people get caught up in which takes away any spiritual sensibilities they may have? You who claim to be so religious aren't practicing what Jesus preached by spreading such fear around and damaging Obama's reputation, as well as putting his family and him in danger. (Bearing false witness!) Not only are you being hysterical, but hypocritical as well. Read Matthew 23 and you will find out how Jesus responded to the scribes and Pharisees (HYPOCRITES) of his time. Do you think he would be pleased with your hysterical and malicious accusations against Obama---the man that is about to become our 44th President? I do believe that we should be aware of all things so not to follow the anti-christ, but, as a Christian I also know that the Lord will come as a thief in the night and so worrying too much over when is not necessary . We are not to know. Also there is NO RAPTURE. I have never found any biblical reference that we will be 'whooshed' up. I of course can be wrong the Bible is always interpreted different. Although when we read without judgement and with Prayer that we are reading it with the Holy Spirit so that we may understand God's will then everything is clear.

When my thirteen year old "Catholic Christian " daughter came home from school asking me if now that Obama had been elected was the world going to end? Why because a classmate had been told by her parents that Obama was the antichrist. I recall that being said about Reagan too. Maybe we should all take a trip down history lane and look at how many timesin this country and in others the end times have been predicted or people were burned at the stack (joan of Arc) because of this whole notion of the antichrist and satan.

From waht I have read in revelations he doesnt fit the profiel, but on a psychological level people can and do contrive and find any reason to justify thsi posotion based on fear! Fear has a weird way of taking away rationale thinking from even the most balanced individuals.

Instead of allowing FEAR to rule why not use our faiths no matter what they are to aid and comfort and help each other. Even the samllest outreach to others breaks down fear and barriers.

If Obama were the anti christ than why did has he been opposed by so many. I think it has more to do with his being a African American than anything religous. Ignorance of those unfamiliar cause fear in many.

It is time to turn the closet light on and look at the monster in our own souls and minds that cause us to think in such a manner

How about this: all the religions in the world are made up, and the anti-christ thing is nuts? That passes Occam's Razor.

JHenryMartin--Do you see how you can read the Bible and get one thing out of it. While I read it and get another? The power of prophesy should not come in hindsight. You read it, then figure out what happened after the event occurred and make it fit. A real prophesy would say something like this" 2,008 years after the death of Jesus, a black man named Obama will become king of a great nation, but beware.....etc." We would both be on the same page. Prophesies like "there will be wars and rumors of wars" are meaningless because there has never been a time without a war or rumor of a war. The Word of God should be unambiguous. Just think about it.

I am glad to see that this discussion has taken on some real Biblical significance. And I thank Lisa Miller for opening up the discussiion. Let's get this anti-Christ thing straightened out once and for all. Ronald Wilson Reagan with six letters to each of his names was the anti-Christ. This simple calculation of the number of the Beast is the absolutely least contrived way of calculating the number. Rember the Bible says COUNT the number of the beast. Not Calculate. Can you find anything even remotely associated with Obama.

There is a theory called Occam's Razor which states that given any two competing theories the one which is least contrived and accounts for the same results is most likely the correct theory. Any theory which involves more than a straight counting of numbers in each of three names to get 666 almost by definition will fail to beat this counting of 666 as found in Ronald Wilson Reagan, after being sliced into pieces by Occam's Razor.

The only thing that is similar in Obama's case is this 666 lottery result. Of which it seems came out on the 5th not the 4th which was election day. In Reagan's case the number 666 came out in DC and New Jersey on thte 4th which WAS election day in 1980.

In response to profjlewis: Actually the Bible is very specific on what to look for in the anti-Christ. Revelation chapter 12 calls the beast the Great Red Dragon. Take the R and E from Red and add it to the A. G. O. N from Dragon and you actually have one spelling of Reagan. Or if you take away the D from Dragon it sounds like Reagan.

The ten heads are the ten Heads were the ten heads of State of the European Common Market which met as ten heads ONLY under Reagan. And they did lend their power to the beast for an hour. (a short while)

The actual Beast is the G-7 which Reagan had a hand in, if not actually did master mind all by himself. The Bible says that one of the seven heads, (heads of state), will be wounded. Reagan was the one. And he did recover. And the Bible is so great that in Revelation 17 it mentions that the G-7 will morph into the G-8 and back to the G-7 again and again as it actually has. In fact during the very last meeting of the G's I heard it called both G-7 and G-8 in the news within the space of mere hours.

I often wonder if this speculation about Obama is just part of the vast right wing Conspiracy trying to brainwash someone into attempting to kill Obama. In the hopes that he recovers and proves them right. It would be all for naught however as Obama does not bear the number of the beast.

I am tired of Christians linking Obama to the Antichrist and...as one who believes the Bible...to be so automatically associated with a single particular political party. I cringe at those holding to certain "biblical" values while at the same time ignoring others.

Start with the "Antichrist" issue. This comes around often. The "reasoning" used is worse than sloppy. One recent popular blog refers inaccurately to the original languages and supports its points with references that do not exist. Connections are so "loose" as to be meaningless. I could use similar reasoning to teach that Barney is the Antichrist:

Barney is a cute purple dinosaur. Assign Roman numerals to that identity... Recall the early practice of writing the letter "U" as "V." Then, take each letter in the phrase "cvte pvrple dinosavr" which represents a Roman numeral, and convert to "Arabic" numbers:

CVTE PVRPLE DINOSAVR
100+5+5+50+500+1+5

Add the numbers and...you guessed it...they equal 666. Proof positive that Barney is the Antichrist. Or at least more solid than the reasoning of so many so often.

The Bible speaks of a literal tribulation. It anticipates a "one world government" which will eventually give way to the return and reign of the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. But I shudder at the sloppy approach of those who try to predict times or narrow signs to specific dates or individuals. The Author of the Word didn???t get that specific.

Also frustrating during recent campaigns were many who portrayed "true" Christians as necessarily tied to one party. This grieves me. I know of people who avoid "Christians" not because of their association with Christ, but because of their association with one political party.
I recently heard... "Any Christian who votes for Obama is morally schizophrenic!" For many Bible believers there are political positions which either reflect or deny biblical principles as they are understood. What is difficult to understand is how any thinking believer can be satisfied with either party. Are not issues of social justice, or stewardship of the earth's resources, and of war also addressed in the Bible? And is every position taken by the "endorsed" party the only biblical approach? Do we blame every ill of the family or country on those who don???t share our values? How are they responsible?

There are more questions than answers. That should not make us uncomfortable. What should is when someone claims to have all the answers. There is only One Who does. Yes, we do have a Book by which to judge...one that is without error. But we dare not pick and choose from what is there, based on our value system, and neglect other parts. How dare we label as unbiblical those who neglect what we embrace while they are embracing what we neglect? We had best adopt a level of humility when it comes to thinking we ourselves are a

Government that have access to the world's knowledge. It is shared amongst an elite few and they are very
secretive. When Truman was informed that UFO's were discovered a special part of the military was asked to analyze the material that was found.
This military hired top scientists who were sworn to secrecy. Over time these technologies were adopted by
defense contractors and slowly released to the public. The people who run these entities work in conjuction
with the CIA. Only people at the top of these agencies know whats going on. Knowledge is power and "Power is knowledge"(eddiwhere 08). If the public
had access to even a fraction of this knowlege these elites have, then there would be a panic. UFO's is just the tip of the iceberg. The President represents these

Satan is very powerful and very cunning. TOday we have people committing suicide in the name of ISLAM. THAT is what Satan intended to do. THis is his way of fighting
GOD. ANd he did it in a genius way. He disguised himself like GOD and used Muhammed as his conduit.
Muhammed confused Satan for GOD. IF he thought GOD WAS SATAN then he would not follow his will. Think about it.

This is why MUHAMMED was so successful because he really believed he was carrying out the will of GOd and justified murder in his name.
