What a big hoopla about a not so smart middle-east man who got nailed to the cross with other crinminals after talking a lot of gibberish? Who cares about who has been against a retard?
Stupidity is the common theme just like for those cavemen worshiped fire or thunder

Would it have been so unthinkable to hold up who Barack Obama is, what he believes, and how he has acted, against the mythology of the AntiChrist? The facts would have spoken for themselves. Instead, you have continued an irrational, dangerous slur on a national leader, the likes of which we have not seen since Lincoln or FDR.

Newsweek, it looks like you accidentally published an article meant for the Weekly World News.

What's next on the agenda? Clinton meets with an alien? Bush's secret batboy child?

You missed an opportunity here. You could be exploring why this fear and superstition is so pervasive. Instead, we just have a useless opinion piece that takes these nutjobs at their word. Ridiculous.

Believe, believe, believe, does not mean that it is TRUE. More wars, torture, murders, and atrocities have been committed for and/or in the name of Christianity than all the other religions put together, which makes you all hypocrites. I repeat, religion has no business in politics. And you, Lisa Miller, along with the brain surgeon who hired you, should both be tarred and feathered for fear mongering and yellow journalism. Try facts instead of ignorant opinion.

    • Posted By: visionary @ 11/16/2008 5:16:49 PM

Hitler, Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot, Sadam Hussein, etc...more wars committed by Godless people I'm afraid...Nice revisionist history....Ignorance?

      • Posted By: Doc Howl @ 11/16/2008 7:39:01 PM

Okay, so you have one century. Prior to the 20th century, most wars were religious or religiously driven.

        Your point?

        • Posted By: visionary @ 11/19/2008 6:41:51 PM

So what is your point? Defending yourself in a war is a crime? My point is more innocent people exterminated by the Godless throughout the centuries...Ever heard of "useless eaters", "more from the fit less from the unfit"? (Margaret Sanger the founder of Planned Parenthood) And how many innocent unborn children were exterminated in the last thirty years throughout the world? Tens or hundreds of billions...Can't compare........

Hitler was a christian you tool. He also did a fine job getting the lutherans in his country to play along with his master plan and believe they were the master race. Mao and Pol Pot were also religious, just not christian. As for Sadam, he was a secular muslim who used the faithful to his benefit. The US also did a nice job of placing him where he was and making him the leader of Iraq. The key is they wouldn't have had the power they had without manipulating the small minded religious to do their bidding. The ignorance here is yours and is glaring.

        • Posted By: visionary @ 11/17/2008 4:11:59 PM

Hitler a christian? You've got to be kidding...Mao and Pol Pot too?...Please..I can't believe the misinformation on this site...And lest we forget the billions upon billions of children, made in the image and likeness of Go, who were executed in the world precisely because of the rejection of God....

    • Posted By: HolyRoller @ 11/16/2008 5:07:06 PM

you comment..."Try facts instead of ignorant opinion." FACTS and Hussein Obama are like oil and water....they just don't mix. Hussein is no more that rhetoric and emotion...terrible lack of substance....the only real FACT we know about him is this...He is a CROOK and a FRAUD....now that is a FACT...

      NOBAMA!!!

      • Posted By: Dragon76 @ 11/17/2008 6:32:02 AM

There are plenty of verifiable facts on Obama. The fact that you are clueless does not verify your position. Nor does using idiotic blogs or blowhards like Limbaugh to prop up what you want to believe prove your point. We are getting rid of the crooks and frauds in january when Bush and Cheney are removed from office.

      • Posted By: Doc Howl @ 11/16/2008 7:39:26 PM

And he's the president elect. Deal with it.

    Great Article Lisa!!

    Dear Lisa Miller,
I thought Newsweek was a respectable news publication. But after reading your silly article that questions whether Obama is the Antichrist, I had put my hand to my forehead and release a long sigh of disappointment. This is the type of journalism I would expect on a blog authored by some wingnut in their grandmother's basement somewhere in Nebraska--not stuff I would expect coming from a new organization.

On November 4th, Americans overwhelmingly rejected fearmongering, ignorance, racism, hate and evangelical hocus pocus. To clarify, definitely not all people of faith are nuts--just the type you -profiled in this article. America is a centrist nation, as proved by the vote. So stop giving these wingnuts on the far right face time. If you insist on featuring them in your column, please expose them for what they are--ignorant lunatics.

    Please, Newsweek, pull it together.

Are you out of your mind? How about fewer articles on Revelations Christians and more on Beatitudes Christians? As the GOP is at long last discovering, the millennial right isn't the religious mainstream in this nation, and the Reagan-era political legitimation of evangelism has degenerated even further into Rovian wedge politics. In the midst of Obama's return to rationality, why give these extremists a platform at all? Having recently posted a Sojourners story, have you a misguided notion of "equal time"? Remember the slippery slope of moral equivalence: the right has for years played the game of asserting a tit-for-tat equivalence between positions that are not equivalent at all. The intolerance-of-intolerance is not the same as intolerance. The self-righteous bigotry of the evangelical right doesn't deserve even-handed treatment, but exposure and condemnation.

If you want to discuss Antichrist theories, then why focus on a small set of these speculations.
Ronald Wilson Reagan bought a house with the address 666 [he asked that the address be changed] and each of his names has 6 letters.
There also is a website suggesting that Bush is the Antichrist, and others speculate that it is Cheney.
Why did you choose to give such broad publicity to these few misguided individuals, and put it under such a dangerous headline?
Why now instead of when the speculation was about Republicans?
And, why are you ignoring those who speculate that something closer to the opposite is true [Note that Barack means Blessed and that Christ was born as a member of a group that faced discrimination.]
Your article not only is inexcusably incomplete reporting, but also may frighten some readers and, for that, is very dangerous.

According to a 2006 study by the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life, a third of white evangelicals believe the world will end in their lifetimes. "

And the rest of world would be correct in placing the blame on extremists like these people. Let's just be glad one of them didn't make it info the oval office.

"The people who believe Obama is the Antichrist are perhaps jumping to conclusions, but they're not nuts"

I beg to differ - and I'm tired of all the "scary black man" stuff they are peddling.

What kind of Antichrist gains power by a democratic election? The election result shows that people are fed up with religions crushing progresses for thousands of years by inferfering with government. It's a vote against those who think goverment should rule based on a bunch of fairy tales and children tales.
Religion messing with politics is also the root cause of many wars including in Iraq and Afghanistan.

People who believe the end is near might not be crazy but they are stunted and want other stunted people to do their thinking for them.. My old phone number ended in 0666 and I used to get calls at all hours from concerned people wanting to know what was in store for me.I liked it because it was an easy number to remember. Oh well.

  • Posted By: DCGuide @ 11/19/2008 2:35:52 PM

The recent election was a repudiation by the American people of the Republican wing-nuts and wack jobs. The founding fathers (specifically Thomas Jefferson) put forth the idea of freedom of religion or freedom from religion. For the last 8 years, our government has tried to backtrack on the Constitutionally guaranteed right to those freedoms and has played to a ever decreasing but terribly imbalanced and anti-intellectual segment of society. If somebody's religious practice is to handle snakes or roll around the floor speaking in tongues, that is none of my business, just as my belief system is none of theirs. THE USA IS NOT A THEOCRACY nor is it a Christian country. Christofascism and Islamofascism are cut from the same cloth. For some reason, the so-called 'Christians' among us have forgotten Christ's admonition: "Judge not, that you will not be judged."

    Was Reagan the Antichrist?
    Ronald
    Wilson
    Reagan

Yet, here we are. Against all odds.

    • Posted By: McLovinB @ 11/19/2008 2:25:02 PM

oops. It seems as though someone already posted that. There is a calculation also for William Gates (Microsoft). I cannot remember it, but it has to do with his name as represented in hexadecimal.

But it strikes me that, just assuming that a prophet was trying to communicate to people in the future about some dread person... the characters in the person's name (which would be in a foreign language, remember) would be a lot more useful for identifying that person than, say, a lottery number? And would they have used roman numerals? ???

I know that many people take this seriously, but, you know, this is a very minor subtext of a great religion.

How can there be an Antichrist, when there is no Christ? Never was. Never will be.

    • Posted By: bojack27 @ 11/18/2008 2:30:19 PM

Your comment shows your lack of knowledge. Since you will not live forever how can you say there will never be?

      • Posted By: maryvogt @ 11/18/2008 3:43:48 PM

Same thing as saying there will never be a tooth fairy - they are both made up entities with magical powers.

If Obama really achieves peace between the Palestinians and the Jews, the christian right will probably think that is also a fulfillment of prophesy and then REALLY think he's the antichrist. How twisted is that, peace in the Middle East is what the Antichrist wants. They think that causing peace in the middle east is a bad thing. I very badly want peace and stability there, so I guess my views are almost in line with that of the Antichrist's.
