Devoting column space to this drivel speaks so well of Newsweek. What will you follow up with? Food products that look like religious figures? Black helicopters? Alien pregnancies? Lisa Miller, your professors and peers must be very proud of you -- who else (tabloids notwithstanding) will give such prominent voice to these important (if unmedicated) voices?

This is THE MOST RIDICULOUS ARTICLE I have ever seen. Way to go Newsweek, in giving the radical right a platform to express their nonsense as if there is a shred of credibility to it. This is a VERY extreme point of view and brings nothing good to the table. Nice job Newsweek.

Almost as crazy as the liberal left proclaiming him to be the messiah.

• Posted By: summer4077 @ 11/18/2008 2:25:06 PM

Sorry, that was Rush Limbaugh that started that and it was used as a slander against Obama by the GOP. I never once heard any Obama supporter proclaim him to be the messiah, but witnessed it many times from McCain's group. That said, this article is absolutely ridiculous. We have a dire crisis going on in our country and when a man speaks of hope and banding together against hard times, he's the Antichrist? Insane.

religion tends to sounds insane alot...no one can take the whole bible literally but they are the first to quote the parts they like or pertain to they're personal lives or views. and i wonder why the bible in its ENTIRITY isnt taken literally ANYMORE?...hmmm...alot of it sounds crazy and insane for the modern age, although the morals/ethics/values are good, too many people have turned it into fanaticism. and many become so obsessed with it they start to think they are literally on a higher ground from which to judge everyone because they are "righteous christians" or "righteous muslims" or whatever the case may be. then without conciously thinking about it they begin to alter and interpret the words of they're own scriptures, they begin to invoke fear, they begin to try and control others to they're views, they begin to act so unlike the religion the love so much they become lost in it.

i like jesus christ, he was a good man, but i do not like the christians, they are so unlike christ.

"I like Jesus--he was a good man" Jesus claimed to be God in the flesh. As such, he was either a liar, a lunatic or Lord of all the earth. Pick one--but don't say that he was just a "good man"

• Posted By: ReasonWatch @ 11/19/2008 10:05:00 AM

Liar, a lunatic or Lord? Are those my only options? Can I only choose "L" words? How about Legend? Messiah cults were rampant in the region at the time. It was nearly 200 years between when events allegedly occurred and when they were transcribed and attributed to the long dead apostles. Belief in an ancient document as a divine truth is as ridiculous as believing in a literal Paul Bunyan. When staking a claim on a book being Truth(with a capital "T") perhaps you shouldn't choose a book that supports slavery, stoning, and slaughter.

• Posted By: Andrew21 @ 11/19/2008 11:52:22 AM

My point is that ANYONE who says that they are God is either deluded, a liar or is indeed who they say they are. Logically, there are no other options. Take your pick.

• Posted By: Andrew21 @ 11/19/2008 11:48:13 AM

The reality of the life of Jesus is an established historical fact confirmed by sources outside of the Bible(Josephus as an example) To say that maybe he didn't even exist is foolishness.

???I would characterize the Senate race as being a race where Obama was, let???s say, blessed and highly favored. That???s not routine. There???s something else going on. I think that Obama, his election to the Senate, was divinely ordered. . . . I know that that was God???s plan." - Bill Rush

"We're here to evolve to a higher plane . . . he is an evolved leader . . . [he] has an ear for eloquence and a Tongue dipped in the Unvarnished Truth." - Oprah Winfrey

"This is bigger than Kennedy. . . . This is the New Testament." | "I felt this thrill going up my leg. I mean, I don't have that too often. No, seriously. It's a dramatic event." - Chris Matthews

???I cried all night. I???m going to be crying for the next four years,??? he said. ???What Barack Obama has accomplished is the single most extraordinary even that has occurred in the 232 years of the nation???s political history???.The event itself is so extraordinary that another chapter could be added to the Bible to chronicle its significance.???
Rep. Jesse Jackson, Jr. on Obama???s winning the Democratic presidential nomination.

You are the instruments that God is going to use to bring about universal change, and that is why Barack has captured the youth. And he has involved young people in a political process that they didn???t care anything about. That???s a sign. When the Messiah speaks, the youth will hear, and the Messiah is absolutely speaking.???

???Brothers and sisters,??? Farrakhan said, ???Barack Obama to me, is a herald of the Messiah. Barack Obama is like the trumpet that alerts you something new, something better is on the way.???
Farrakhan points out that the man Nation of Islam followers refer to as ???the Savior,??? Fard Muhammad, had a black father and a white mother, just as Obama did.

???A black man with a white mother became a savior to us,??? he said. ???A black man with a white mother could turn out to be one who can lift America from her fall.

These words of praise from Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan

666 is NOT the sign of the beast. That was a misinterpretation. The sign of the beast is 616 http://realityme.net/2006/07/18/when-i-the-sign-of-the-beast-666-is-really-616/

I heard about this article and thought it was just another extreme opinion offered on the internet. Shame on you Newsweek for adding any kind of legitimacy to this story from fearfully creative minds. Obama is the first politician in too many years to have hope as inspiration as his platform, as opposed to fear and control. I am appalled by your lack of taste and judgment.

November 11, 2008 was the day that 666 came up in the Illinois Lottery. If you want to believe that this is a divine warning then why would a perfect God be so late with it? Obama was ALREADY ELECTED by then so the only logical conclusion is that the warning pertains to someone else. So, let's see....what significant event happened on or just before 11/11/08? Well, a quick Google search shows that this lottery pick came right after Sarah Palin spoke at the repuplican governors conference where she said that she isn't ruling out a run for the presidency in 2012. Seems to me that any rapture ready death cultist worth his/her (pillar of) salt should be casting a suspicious eye in that direction as well. Either that or they have to admit that their god has really bad timing.

It's this type of alarmist extreme right rhetoiric that could have given us Sarah Palin as a president. Even though media personalities have self-servingly attempted to define religious faith and determine who is or is not a person of faith, the only people who buy into this type of hatred and bigotry are the same people who took this country downhill at the direction of those whom they serve.
It would seem that media personalties would realize that, finally, most are not buying into the extreme,hate-to-control cultist way of thinking that was furthered by this administration and its cronies that resulted in the state of affairs we find ourselves in.

A lot of people believe that Lisa Miller has sex with goats. It's a widely held belief! I can't wait for the article. After all, it would be irresponsible not to speculate.

• Posted By: nowonmai @ 11/18/2008 8:20:09 PM

Wow, I thought your comment about Lisa Miller having sex with goats was just jumping to conclusions, but I just heard that it might be true from another reliable source. Would so many people be saying it ifit wasn't true?

Would

When I attended Massillon Christian School in the 70s, it was Jimmy Carter who was the antichrist.
Yes, the ONE president in my lifetime who has set the best example of what a good earth citizen should be.

in your article, "He will be a sweet-talking world leader who gathers governments and economies under his command to further his own evil agenda." reads more like the Bush Jr presidency than an Obama one.
Look at what the world has become due to our mass murdering of innocents in Iraq and Afghanistan and Pakistan. Look how the G-8 and the World Bank have pillaged national economies in the guise of "help" and "progress",

Perhaps a follow up article on the mental instability of those who would fall for such B S is in order?

Morons, the lot of them. Why does this magazine give space to whack jobs like this?

• Posted By: MomHon @ 11/19/2008 7:58:00 AM

Thanks to the last couple of posters - exactly what I was about to say. Does it matter to you, Newsweek editors, that you're encouraging all the wingnut loonies out there, or is attracting attention all that matters to you? What a pile of garbage - and to think Newsweek used to be a respected publication. You all should be ashamed of yourselves.

• Posted By: Sherrill56 @ 11/19/2008 7:54:29 AM

You're joking, right? I can hardly wait for upcoming "Beliefwatch" articles: "The Moon: Made of Green Cheese?" "Burning at the Stake--a good idea after all?" "Gravity--Believers think it is just a way to make you weight more."

Or how about this: Let's see, 666 is the sign of the beast. Add the numbers together and you get 18. Eighteen is the legal voting age, voters decided the election. Hooray--Barack Obama is not the antichrist after all. Come on, Newsweek, this really has to stop if you want to continue being taken seriously.

• Posted By: Smitty33 @ 11/19/2008 7:53:45 AM

Has it become Newsweek's policy to provide a forum for every lunatic fringe element in our society? Why not ask, is John McCain the Antichrist? Is Nicolas Sarkozy the Antichrist? Is Vladimir Putin the Antichrist? Is Mahmud Ahmadinejad the Antichrist? Have you all lost your minds giving voice to such mindless, hateful drivel?

this is just plain sick.about as insulting to Americans, right left and center as it gets

• Posted By: eddiewhere @ 11/19/2008 2:31:53 AM

No one came to worship OBAMA. They came because they have been devestated by the policies of this last administration. It is irresponsible for newsweek to make this comparison because it influences people like shepard to believe in this non-sense. This article belongs in the National Enquirer not NewWEEk.

• Posted By: shepard1 @ 11/19/2008 1:51:33 AM

FINALLY, FINALLY, a major news magazine grows a spine and publishes an article on Barack Obama and the Anti-Christ similarities, something that many people are thinking but are too afraid to vocalize. All one had to do was watch TV coverage after Obama was elected and look at the rapturous faces among the 500,000+ faithful who gathered to 'worship' THE ONE. The entire spectacle was truly hideous.

• Posted By: eddiewhere @ 11/19/2008 1:46:26 AM

THis article belongs in the NATIONAL ENQUIRER not NEWSWEEK. THERE IS A CYBER WAR THAT HAS BEEN LAUNCHED AGAINST AMERICA. AND THE CHINESE AND RUSSIANS ARE KICKING OUR A**ES. OBAMA NEEDS TO APPOINT COLIN POWELL TO HEAD ASSEMBLE A NEW ARMY. A CYBER ARMY TO FIGHT THE NEW WAR OF THE FUTURE. OUR ARMY IS VERY WEAK AND THE ENEMY IS USING OVERWHELMING FORCE AGAINST US. WE NEED TO ASSEMBLE A NEW CYBER ARMY BEFOR AL QUEDA CATCHES ON. IMAGINE LAUNCHING ATTACKS AGAINST AN ENEMY BY TAKING CONTROL OF THEIR OWN WEAPONS VIA COMPUTER. OBAMA NEEDS TO APPOINT RICHARDSON TO BE SECRETARY OF STATE. HE IS A CALM COOL NEGOTIATER. NON POLARIZING. HE SPEAKS SPANISH AND CAN REALLY IMPROVE OUR RELATIONSHIPS ON THIS SIDE OF THE HEMISPHERE. HE CAN BRING PEACE TO THE MIDDLE EAST. WOMEN ARE NOT TAKEN SERIOUSLY IN THE MIDDLE EAST. THE LAST TWO SECRETARY OF STATES HAVE BEEN WOMEN. ENOUGH WE NEED A CHANGE. I REALLY LIKE WARREN CHRISTOPHER WE NEED SOMEONE LIKE THAT. RICHARDSON IS THE MAN.
