This is beyond shameful. It is dangerous.
The question should be: Is Lisa Miller a journalist?
Is she out of her mind?

Make way for Barry "Beelzebub" Obuma!!! LOL!!
Newsweek seriously undermines its credibility as a legitimate news source by publishing this ridiculous (yet still dangerous) twaddle. Congratulations on achieving nothing with this piece than making fools of yourselves and potentially inciting religious fanatics to violence. The editor who approved its inclusion should rethink his or her suitability for the job.
Here is a verse from the New Testament of the Christian Bible to put everything in perspective. Not my words, but taken from God's Holy Word, the Bible. 1 Corinthians chapter 6 verse 9. "Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And that is what some of you WERE. BUT, you were washed, you were sanctified (separated to God through the blood of Jesus Christ), you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God." In case that isn't very clear, ALL unrepentant man is filled with sin and is a sinner. Listed in Corinthians is just a short list of an example of some sins. Since we are all sinners, including homosexuals, our only hope is to ask Jesus Christ our Lord to forgive of us our sins, and as Jesus said "go, and sin no more." No good Christian hates homosexuals, it is the sin of homosexuality that will cause God's judgment to fall on that persons life and condemn him or her to eternal punishment. It is God's design that marriage is between one man and one woman according to the Biblical account of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden described in Genesis. If God had created Adam and Steve, the human race would have never gotten started due to lack of pro-creation. Therefore, God's institution of Holy matrimony or marriage was designed that mankind might populate the earth and be fruitful and multiply. This simply is impossible with homosexuality and therefore makes homosexuality a sin and an abomination to God. If you call yourself a Christian and you believe something other than this, then you are probably not referring to the Bible for your source of Truth, but rather, are basing your "truth" on your own sense of right and wrong or your own sense of morality and not God's authoritative Holy definition of Truth and His absolute definition of morality and what makes a person moral.
Um, your "Holy' book, and I laugh even using that term, was written by a committee of people hundreds of years after the supposed events that were being told. The only truth to be found in that book is that there are obviously a whole heard of people out there idiotic enough to believe just about anything even if it is completely ridiculous.
To x95umphrey--God bless for trying--but our Lord said something about pearls before swine. Our best testimony is our lives.
is this column a joke?
Please let the "rapture" come and take all these narrowminded idiots away so that we can live in a quieter, happy place.
There have been hundreds of racially incited crimes since the election of Barack Obama. He had SS protection earlier than any presidential candidate in history and since his election has received more threats than any previous President-Elect. And now, you seek to aim fuel to this fire, putting him, his family, and his supporters of any color in danger by "legitimizing" wingnut theories with this article???? There are crazies out there who are just looking for a reason for violence against this man. This is HIGHLY irresponsible, complete and utter nonsense and a waste of time and space. I will NEVER read Newsweek again, since this is the type of article they seek to represent. I would expect this type of nonsense on a KKK or Neo-Nazi website. These religious nuts and by extension you, with this CRAPTASTIC article only incite hate, lies and violence, and do more to progress the "Devil's" work than Obama ever could.
I read this article expecting that the author was joking, that it was a tongue-in-cheek riff on the silliness of using loaded terms like "antichrist" to tear down a political candidate who isn't white and who has a distinctly foreign name. No such luck. There was an opportunity to discuss the way religious and cultural beliefs played into this election and how they continue to affect the way people view our new president-elect. Again, no such luck. Instead, just a sad mish-mash of drivel with hardly a pinky hold on reality OR responsible journalism. Shame on Lisa Miller and shame on the editors at Newsweek.
The entire idea of watching for the rapture is non-Biblical. No man shall know the day nor the hour, so the Bible says.
What this article doesn't mention is by what signs these folk believe Obama to be the Antichrist. Other than being charismatic, there isn't a single one. There's no more chance that Obama's the Antichrist than, say, Ronald Reagan or JFK or any of a host of world leaders past and present.
It's clear that those who believe that Obama may be the Antichrist fall into at least one of two categories: Racists and lunatics.
Yes, Virginia, there are real nutcases in this world, and these people are among them.
What trash.
When will the media start to treat the Rapture crowd as they really are...Morons.
My GOD, it must be a REALLY slow news day.
Lisa, I am sure that when you wrote this piece you were hoping for dialogue regarding the many posts, which link President elect Obama to being the anti-christ.
However I would like to reveal that first, the three-digit winning lottery number 666 has occured in the Pennsylvania lottery 12x - once on Good Friday, in Florida 3x, in Maryland and North Carolina 1x each. So there is nothing unusual about this number appearing as a winning lottery number.
Second, there is no descriptor in either Revelations, First or Second John, which would lead one to describe President elect Obama as the anti-christ. However, we have segments of our society who need nothing more than to attribute your piece as proof of President elect Obama as being the anti-christ to justifying harm being brought to him.
I pray that the President elect is spared harm because of your thoughlessness.
Lisa, I am sure you penned this article to encourage dialogue about something as unknown as where the stock market will end today. However, you have some obligation not to insight violence against our newly elected president. I fear that is exactly what some nut would need to attempt to assasinate President Elect Obama, is the belief he is the antichrist.

Religion, as well as its followers, continue to amuse me.
In all my research over the years regarding religion, both contemporary and ancient (and all points in between), what strikes me as blatantly obvious is this : The more the human race has evolved, the more their gods follow suit. Doesn't any one else see a pattern here ? Helllllooooo ?
Hildybel -- we don't want to silence them, any more than we would want someone to silence us. The First Amendment is too important, and silencing minorities is never a method a reasonable society wants to embrace. We just need to improve public education (democracy fails without a well-informed electorate) and make sure that government POLICY is not being shaped by religious extremists' beliefs.
With the turn of the millennium it was inevitable that we'd get a resurgence of this flavor of Christianity -- it happens every turn of the century, and was huge around 1000 AD.
As a religious scholar, I'm intrigued by the fact that Christianity actually survived its apocalyptic roots, since it was originally a community preparing for what it thought were the End Times. If you examine the earliest Biblical texts, you'll find that the original Christian community expected Jesus to return IN THEIR OWN LIFETIME, according to His own words: "Truly I say to you, there are some of those who are standing here who shall not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom." (Matthew 16:28, Mark 9:1, Luke 9:27).
When this failed to happen, Christians were at a loss. What happened? Out of their attempt to explain this paradox, millennialism was born... interpreting the prophesy metaphorically, rather than literally, and forever postponing the "due date".
It is fascinating to me to see how humanity continues to reinterpret the vicissitudes of history, from the Fall of Rome to the Black Death to the Great War to Y2K, as, "Aha, THIS is what Jesus was talking about."
for love of all that is sane and decent, if you are as offended by this article as I am, let it be known to the author, the editors of Newsweek, and their advertisers. I have had it with the religious lunatic fringe. I used to believe in being tolerant of religious views, but I have decided that there is a limit to my tolerance. This article exceeded that limit. Like we need to whip the wingnuts into a frenzy? They're already frothing at the mouth, and I consider them dangerous - like a dog frothing at the mouth,
Dogs? Wow. Frothing dogs? What an insult! We know who your master is!
I have no master. It was intended as an insult - at least you have enough remaining gasp of reality to have recognized it as such. Good for you.
The publication of anything under the title "Is Obama the Antichrist?" is the height of irresponsibility, almost to the point of inciting violence against the next President of the United States. This piece has material disguised as substantive and somehow factual ("best source online for predictions and calculations concerning the end of the world." Who says? Does he deal with the life of stars and discussing how earth might "die" billions of years from now? Come off it ...)
Newsweek should be beyond disgraced by this piece, its title, and how it was presented.
Really Lisa, why are U using your talents(?) to pen such a worthless article? Here is an idea for free! What is the psychology of arsonists who get their Jollies in destroying the homes in California's latest wild land fires?
Thank you so much for throwing kerosene on the overheated imaginations of every millennialist wing nut and bigot in America.
Newsweek has just given the patina of legitimacy to the fever-dreams of people who are looking for a rationale (devoid of reason) to hate and fear our new president. You've given no actual theological reason to tie the concept of the Antichrist to Obama.. for none actually exists. All you've done is amplified right-wing Christian demagoguery.
Shame on you.
What in the world are you and Newsweek doing spending one minute or one page speculating on the weird beliefs of a bunch of religious whackjobs?
End Days? Apocalypse? Antichrist? what are you people, morons?
