Obama is probably not the anti-Christ? Really? Like, really? Are you serious????? This is despicable journalism, and I am quite surprised that any one would actually give this sort of credence to fringe lunacy. Absolute trash. This article more of an indication of the end times than Obama's presidency ever will be. What a bleeping joke!

This is a ridiculous, shoddy piece of journalism (if you can even call it that!). I'm appalled that Newsweek would print this rubbish. Way to incite the whack jobs even more... disgusting!!!

I wondered what the rabid bush haters would do for fun now that obama is president. I should have known that they would hunt out whacko articles about obama to rant about. you say that because of bush, the mid east wants nukes to throw a few at us. I think we should give tehran a couple nukes, say 50 megaton at ground level burst. Of course you would not be able to use parts of Iran for a few thousand yrs, but wtf we probably won't miss it.

" I wondered what the rabid bush haters would do for fun now that obama is president."

Now it's time to go after Prop 8, etc.

I can't decide which is more ridiculous and stupid -- the freaks who believe this garbage, or "News"Week for printing it without reminding the rest of us to point and laugh at the morons.

This is beyond contempt and we need to call these people out for being the idiots they are.

Obama's sister dated a somalian mullah

If true, so what? Bush's brother plundered Silverado Savings and Loan.

Should we hold Bush accountable for that?

From the article: "a third of white evangelicals believe the world will end in their lifetimes."

So what? 1/3 - or more - of Christians have believed the world will end in their lifetimes since the day Christianity was founded! They've been wrong before, they're still wrong.

  • Posted By: aem75 @ 11/17/2008 10:35:29 AM

"The people who believe Obama is the Antichrist are perhaps jumping to conclusions, but they're not nuts..."
I am sorry, but yes they are, and so are you for publishing this article. Just because a group of people believe something does not make that belief legitimate.
That Newsweek would publish this is outrageous and disgusting.

  • Posted By: ceciledian @ 11/17/2008 10:31:48 AM

Oh puhleeeze! Is Newsweek the Anti-Journalism?

  • Posted By: mahansen @ 11/17/2008 10:29:09 AM

This article is beneath Newsweek and publishing it here shows your lack of credibiltiy. Besides, Ronnie Reagan was the antiChrist, he had six letters in each of his names. What nonsense to even suggest this to the zealots and Rapture group, again and again... and if you knew your Bible, you would know he would be from the Middle East. Osama bin Laden has more chance of being the antiChrist than someone born in Hawaii

Whether or not Obama is the Anti-Christ is somewhat insignificant. What is substantial is that his type of persona seems to bear the marks of the rise to power of whoever will be/is the Anti-Christ. One of perhaps three scenarios in terms of the characteristics of this person's rise to power may be: 1) A charismatic leader who is seen as a quasi-Messiah; 2) A ruler who takes his position by force and aggression and demands irrevocable allegiance; and thirdly 3) Someone who slips through the cracks unnoticed and suddenly appears on the world stage. The first view tends to be the most widely-shared one and the characteristics of Obama's progression to prominence and world acclaim is why many are watching closely. If it is not him, the scenarios previously mentioned may provide a means for identifying who this person may be in the future.

He didn't gain the Presidency by force, but by election.

      Good points.

Please tell me this is satire.

  • Posted By: mahansen @ 11/17/2008 10:25:27 AM

For a respected magazine as Newsweek to even publish such garbage is disgusting. You just continue to add to the 'email campaign smear' of this nonsense with this type of garbage

  • Posted By: Rocky2001 @ 11/17/2008 10:03:26 AM

LOL!! Every 4 or 8 years the new president is the Anti-christ?? I knew "W" wasn't, lets face it the guy is an idiot! I would put Barry's intelligence about 4 point higher...so I'm not worried.

He graduated in the top 10% of his class at Harvard and was editor of the Harvard review. Taught constitutional law for 10 years at U of C and was in the state senate.

Urieldagda, in response; America is where it is now. That is a reality. Obama better than McCain? Does it really matter at this point. America has voted for Obama's direction. What I am waiting for is how Obama will respond to adversity. How will he respond to a natural disaster, how will he respond to an armed attack? Who knows and I hope he never has to make those tough decisions. But he eventually will have to; that is a reality and comes with the job. Is Obama better than McCain? No one will ever know. And the argument is not relavent.

It is my belief that both of the political parties got us to this point. But lets just put a name to this era and say it was Bush's fault because he was the leader or the free world and its just easier to say that versus examining the reasons why. When Obama has his first taste of adversity I hope that you judge him the same way as Bush was; and blame him too because he will be the leader at the time. But will you? I don't' think you will. Obama or McCain; they would have responded to many events similarly if put in that position. That is part of the fail safes of the democratic system; that no one person has absolute power. Let's not jump to any conclusions about a man's legacy before they even establish themselves.

I can promise you if Obama ever lies to Congress and the United Nations, claiming to have definite military intelligence that requires us to immediately invade another nation to prevent nuclear war, and we find out about it, Obama would be treated a thousand times more harshly than Bush was.

This article has no place in a serious news magazine such as Newsweek. I am shocked that such a frivolous and possibly dangerous article has been allowed to be published by a magazine with such a long reputation for serious journalism. When I was a kid, they made us read Newsweek in current events class. I wouldn't let my son or daughter read this piece except for a laugh, although it's not really funny. It's too scary to think that Newsweek actually published this.

The subject of end-of-the-world cults is indeed important, as these fanatical people may be pushed by recent events into becoming violent, as has been openly spoken of by the cult "Third Wave", which Sarah Palin was recently linked to.

These matters are important and should be discussed. As a worrisome threat to our republic, NOT as a question of whether or not these ridiculous prophecies, manufactured by patently obvious hoaxers for personal gain, could actually come true! This should be a story about highly delusional individuals running amok among the citizenry, not this monstrous puff piece basically saying, "Hey maybe the cults know something we don't."

What's next, shall we have a two-hour television documentary on exactly how many angels can really sit on the head of a pin? As Matt Damon so eloquently observed, "It's absurd!"

I would like to point out for anyone still using old-fashioned logic to process what they read, that despite the assertions in the fiasco above, just because something is "widely shared" does not make it "not nuts".

Everybody listen up: there is no antichrist, stop believing in imaginary beings and grow up.

That's a good question - why the existence of evil? Living in this world, it's easy to see evil does exist. A careful reading of the Bible shows there has always been a struggle for power and dominance between good - GOD - and evil. We know good and God will win, but we must do our part by following Jesus' selfless example. That means turning away from know-it-all doctrines such as the Christian Evangelicals. They do more harm than good. Just say no to hate and the false prophets. Let God be the judge. Just do good and say no to hate. Help the poor, the oppressed, and be kind.

    • Posted By: epryor @ 11/16/2008 1:28:18 AM

Here is a better question. If G-d made me and he knew I was eventually going to go to Hell when he made me, then why did he make me? Why did he make Lucifer if he knew Lucifer would turn on him and eventually mislead Eve, causing the fall of Man?

      • Posted By: 55StLouisMO @ 11/16/2008 1:41:33 AM

While God may be all-knowing and omnipotent, he is not all-powerful - hence the struggle between good - God - and evil. You have free choice, as you know. It will be your choice to choose evil, not God's. Why is there evil? I don't know. No one on earth knows - and beware those who have too many answers and claim they do know. No one does. But some people have a hard time handling these unknowns and the evil and the scary things in the world, so they cook up all that crap, claim to speak for God and interpret the Bible, and then create their own special brand of evil that causes a bunch of trouble. Like claiming Barack Obama is the anti-christ and evil.

        • Posted By: epryor @ 11/16/2008 1:48:42 AM

My fate is set. It was set at the beginning of time. I don't really have a choice. I was not built to just accept a book without knowing its authors or acceptance without proof. If prophesy is true, then the past, present and future are just an illusion of the mind. No one has a choice because it is written already.

          • Posted By: 55StLouisMO @ 11/16/2008 1:51:04 AM

Then you must be a Muslim because that is a cornerstone of Islam - Allah has written everything down and everything is God's will. Christians don't believe that - they believe we have free will to choose our paths between good and evil. You must read the Bible for yourself.

            • Posted By: Doc Howl @ 11/17/2008 8:54:08 AM

              Actually, that's the Calvinist doctrine.

            • Posted By: epryor @ 11/16/2008 1:57:06 AM

I grew up Christian and know almost nothing about Islam. Prophesy is nothing but predestination. If you believe in the antichrist, then you believe that everything is preordained. If you believe in prophesy then you also believe everything is written down.

              • Posted By: 55StLouisMO @ 11/16/2008 2:02:06 AM

Islam is big on fate and pre-ordained fate. It shares that with the evangelicals. Free yourself and read the Bible for yourself. Listen to Jesus - He turns to peace and good. Let the scales fall from your eyes as they did from Paul's on the road to Damascus. Take care.

        • Posted By: ChristianGal @ 11/16/2008 11:05:45 AM

I beg to differ! God is all-powerful and all-knowing. The reason people will go to hell is because they choose to ignore God! It's called "free will". He gave us free will AND all the information we need to know to make the right choice.

          • Posted By: Blue in AZ @ 11/16/2008 11:46:28 AM

What if someone never receives the information? There are plenty of people in the world who will never hear the English language, let alone the word Christ. Are they doomed to hell? Is it their fault they were born being taught another religion or no religion at all? Because that is all religion is: indoctrination.

            • Posted By: whybother? @ 11/16/2008 1:57:23 PM

It's pointless to argue or question the Christian mindset. According to these born agains, even Mother Theresa would end up in Hell because as a Catholic, she as not been "saved" she had not accepted Jesus Christ has her personal savior. Even though she lived her life helping others, she is dammned. Dont wast your time, trying to talk sense into these people.
