Sorry, He is supposed to be a journalist. If he cannot be objective on both sides then he should get out of the kicthen - then be a full time activist. BUT do not call him a journalist.
It seems as though every journalist has an agenda - especially Newsweek.

bmd12345, this was commentary, not reportage. Commentary makes no bones about having a point of view.

      What? A biased *opinion piece*?

      Heavens. Will wonders never cease?

Thankfully, the courts will sort this mess out. Discrimination is not okay, and the courts in Connecticut figured it out. It's only a matter of time. You can't enforce the beliefs of one religion through legislation. And as for the argument that we need to "keep traditional families intact", well there are no laws preventing divorce when a couple has children, and unwed mothers are "allowed" to keep their children. This is not a vaild argument.

Other than the legal implications, the notion that some people will deny basic happiness to a small group of people is despicable. Thankfully, the constitution and the legal process will clear up this mess...eventually.

Hey NEWSWEEK will you be presenting the opposing view here? But I serious doubt you have any writers that would risk their job to publish an opposing view.

    • Posted By: kshortSD @ 11/17/2008 1:43:08 PM

Even your local newspaper publishes editiorials and opinions. What a ridiculous thing to get upset about. Personally, I'm upset about rampant discrimination, but whatever.

"Hey NEWSWEEK will you be presenting the opposing view here? "

Sorry, they thought about it, but Jarry Falwell and Lester Maddox are dead.

    James4Truth:

You are wrong. I will use words that maybe you can understand.

Your lifestyle is a choice to rebel against God and live in sin. You should be ashamed to even name such acts of perversion... instead you glory in them and you expect that others will enjoy your perverted lifestyle.

I do not hate you, but I do not desire to allow your kind to ruin this country. Your actions are not acceptable, you do not need toleration, you need to be corrected. You need to see that the way you are living is a choice, and it is a bad one.

Average Americans have spoken out several times about this type of perversion, and you still seek to have the right to flaunt your bigoted lifestyle in front of children as if it was natural.

    • Posted By: Doc Howl @ 11/17/2008 8:36:35 AM

Please keep your religion out of my government. If you want a theocracy, move to Iran. Thanks.

i think she is on the side of good, not bigotry...she was being sarcastic from what i see.

My bad. I didn't catch that the first time around...the satire was TOO good. LOL.

  • Posted By: Keedew @ 11/16/2008 3:36:35 PM

Bottom line: Sodomy is a sin and no matter how many people find it acceptable it will always be a sin. Just like adultary, stealing, and the other eight com.... oh wait our generation calls them suggestions now.

    • Posted By: nimodahooligan @ 11/17/2008 9:48:07 AM

hmmm...i wonder why they are simply suggestions now-a-days??? ooo i think i know....BECAUSE THE PEOPLE THE PREACH THE TEN COMMANDMENTS (and the bible for that matter) CANT SEEM TO FOLLOW THEY'RE OWN WORDS....BY THE MILLIONS!!!!!! when we see christians acting like "christ" and not hateful, vengeful, hypocritical bigots, then maybe people will take you more seriously, that is, us "non-religious immoral sinners that strayed from the flock and have to find jesus".

your an idiot. keep your personal ideoligy the hell out of my life and everyone elses. according to the bible everyone in america is living in sin by most counts, especially the religiously righteous christians. so i think YOU need to look at your life and determine if your in a position to judge another person. you are not perfection, and very far from it.

This is NOT a civil rights issue. It's an issue over the acceptance of a depraved sexual perversion.

    • Posted By: Doc Howl @ 11/17/2008 8:43:40 AM

That's what people said about interracial marriages.

  • Posted By: Keedew @ 11/16/2008 3:54:27 PM

When is the media going to portray the majorities side of prop 8??

    • Posted By: im.thatoneguy @ 11/16/2008 6:46:28 PM

Yeah! And when is the media going to cover the KKK's side of the civil rights movement?

      It's long overdue!

      • Posted By: ctruskey @ 11/17/2008 5:13:36 AM

Wow you must be young, during the 60's and the civil rights movement, their was a lot of coverage of KKK leaders and others speaking out against civil rights. Please go to the liberary and do some research.

        • Posted By: Doc Howl @ 11/17/2008 8:41:02 AM

The pro-prop 8 side already had its say, with $15 million bucks worth of advertising by out of state carpetbaggers.

  • Posted By: europeandoll @ 11/17/2008 12:53:26 AM

James4Truth, heteorsexuals already ruined and demoralized this country. Why blame gay and lesbian? Look at the number of divorces and infidelities rate. Do you read anything else except the Bible??? If being gay, was a simple choice then it would be very easy to correct it (using your vocabulary). We get some choices in life but many times, there is no choice, we are genetically predispositioned. We are all created by God, so find some love toward another in your cold and cruel heart.

  • Posted By: 4Equality @ 11/17/2008 12:40:54 AM

James4Truth, you are areligious bigot. My God does not discriminate. Do not try to force your religion on everyone else.

  • Posted By: Against-Ignorance @ 11/16/2008 9:50:55 PM

Thank you David Jefferson for an excellent article. The gay community certainly has become to comfortable, a bit soft even about direct conflict. I would ad that people in general have become far to trusting of right wing Christians and their whole 'compassionaste conservatism dodge. Having grown up Fundamentalist I can say for sure that their kind never changes. They will lie to your face about becoming more 'tolerant'; then go back to their churches to plot sneakier ways of stealing your rights. God willing, the boycotts and protests will teach them and theirs a hard lesson about what happens to thieves who steal ones rights, the worst and foulest sort of theft.

  • Posted By: dm10003 @ 11/16/2008 5:45:20 PM

the bigoted ignorance and insults on display here will collapse of their own weight with just a little push.

When the protests started in Los Angeles, the helicopter video cameras where tracking the movement of the anti-prop 8 crowds very well. The protests were covered here as best as any media outlet could do. I've seen photographs and video of the 'no on prop 8' protesters vandalizing police cars by jumping on them, blocking traffic and throwing things at cars to get peoples attention. Arrests were made, and they were covered by the media. I wouldn't say the media is doing a bad job covering the protests on both sides, AS FAR AS THE VISUALS GO, it's the writers that put the story to the images and put a slightly different angle to what is really going on. Like Lee Holmes said below, "hate being used to fight 'hate'" is really what is happening. The pro-prop 8 people aren't any better I will say too, as far as the words they use doing protests, which are very foul. But at least they are not physically vandalizing and causing terror like the anti prop-8 folks.

NEWSWEAK is slapping a smiley face on the Nazi-like tactics of the antis. Mightily attempting to keep the worst of the outrages[assault and battery, vandalism, hate crimes, religious intolerance, arson],from seeing the light of day,the Lamestreams are trying to produce a media blackout, with their failures illuminated by the news getting into the small-market media, affiliates, and local newspapers covering these ever growing instances of hate being used to fight ''hate''. The irony of bearing signs emblazoned with ''MORMON SCUM'' while pleading for ''tolerance''was lost upon people I accosted in front of Salt Lake Citys Temple Square this weekend, who show the deranged quality of those who are truly filled with anger and hatred. They really want to do violence upon somebody, anybody, tied to the LDS ''power structure''the protesters deem to be behind the passage of Prop 8,hence a large police presence in a state that did not even have a ''Prop 8'' on its own ballot, trying to keep the lid on. The fact remains that these people are using mob justice in order to wrest away a decision that was democratically arrived at through the ballot box. Why Jefferson refuses to acknowlage this is unknown,as it was also no portion of the philosophies held by this nations Founding Fathers.

gay, straight, white, hispanic, the government shouldn't make laws that discriminate.
religion of the majority shouldn't affect the legal status of a minority.
    it's just not fair.

marriage used to be a solely religious thing, but it just isn't anymore.
atheists get married. i could get married, and i have no religion.
rapists and killers and horrible people can get married, and yet, good people, people who contribute to their community, can't get married because of who they love.

if god doesn't approve of love, that's really not a god that i want to believe in.

Even if California's gay marriages remain unrevoked (or unconverted to civil unions), they will now have the public status of irreversible mistakes, like bad public works projects or temporary changes in tax law that allowed tax cheaters to get away with something the state now declares they shouldn't have, though it will never recover that year's revenues. If you go to Utah and tell them you're married under California law, they'll say No you're not, that's illegal, I saw it on CNN. Your child will be informed with great conviction by his little classmates that NOOOOOO, his daddies aren't married, because MY daddy donated a thousand dollars to make sure of it. In Florida, not only can you not get married, not only can you not have a civil union, but if you form a private partnership by contract that looks too much like a marriage, the state can annul it. In Arkansas, if your nephew becomes an orphan, you'd better not be living with anybody, because the state of Arkansas would rather make your nephew a ward of the state and have him abused in a foster home than have him foster-parented by you and your partner or (God forbid!) adopted by his only living relative. The only depraved and perverted thing in this whole conversation is the notion that fundamental rights can be taken away by simple majority vote, despite all reason, all principle, and all ........... sorry, you haters .......... morality.

I do agree that the definition of marriage is between a man and a woman..
I guess what is at stake here is that mariage itself needs to be redefined? after all it was defined a long, long time ago and by the way, included a number of other very archaic rules which we no logner enforce, for example regarding how to punish adultery, etc. Let's not pretend the definitions of words ahs not evolved since their birth!
What's obama to do about this anyway? go against the will of the majority or against the well being of a minority?
See the only solution if you do not want to redefine mariage, is to create a new civil status for all, a new word, and get rid of mariage. since equality is what we are all seeking, right?
so... what's the point of finding a new word if we already have a pretty good one?

  • Posted By: jdm9499 @ 11/16/2008 4:41:17 AM

The very definition of marriage is a union between a man and a woman. That's a non-religious definition mind you. The bottom line is this....most individuals that decide to go gay, or who claim they were 'born' gay confuse a sexual fetish with 'love'. Humans were created to reproduce. If our society were all gay's, how would life evolve? Surely not through adoption. A males private part is not meant to enter another males rear end. Do you know what happens? Google 'pink sock' (have filter turned off) *Ouch!*
