Government did not create marriage, God did. Government recognizes what God has created, but has no authority to redefine it. That's why there are civil unions, domestic partnerships, etc. granting upon whoever the Government sees fit whatever legal rights the Government sees fit. There is no need to redefine marriage beyond the bounds that God has set. Render unto Caesar that which is Caesar's and unto God that which is God's.

Homosexuality is your sexual orientation...it is not an act. Homosexuality is not a "CHOICE". You are born that way. For all you Heterosexual non-believer's of this.....I would like to know at what age you chose to be heterosexual over homosexual.

I am a straight, married male and I could care less if two people who love each other and happen to be same gender want to get married. Gays will never be able to make the same sham of marriage that straights have - many marriages I see are a joke. My marriage is not the least bit threatened. However, I get sick and tired of all of the hate and posturing by people in the name of God, who by the way, commit every sin known to mankind regularly, then claim to be too good to accept Gay marriage. Let me give you a tip - the genie is waaaaaay out of that bottle, so get over yourselves, find a new cause to hate and get the hell (pun intended) out of the way. By the way, I happen to be a practicing Baptist - I have my sins in perspective!

OMG! I cannot believe my comment ended up close to the bigot pwhotechurch, I do not want to be even slightly associated with that. (btw: WHITE CHURCH? that tells me lot about you!)

I still don't understand why conservative christians are so concerned with something that truly doesn't concern them! Two people want to get married. Who cares!?!?!? And to tell them that they're going to hell? If in this day and age you still cling to ANY religious belief, you are close-minded. ALL religion was started by men to control others. THERE IS NO GOD. It's all in your warped minds.

THe point is change the wording to "Civil Union" as vermont did and the religious nuts will calm down and most likely drop the issue, this country like it or not was founded on Christian Values, the ACLU has spent a lot of time A$$ raping Religion while promoting Homosexuality amonst other deviant behavior. To be honest as long as it is with two consenting adults and not infront of me, I neither like nor dislike the whole Gay/Lesbian thing. The Reverend Verenus says Love your Hetrosexual brothers and do not shove your deviant godless behaviour in there faces and they will not hate you for it." Amen

It astounds me the number of straight people posting here who have no issue with two people marrying for money, convenience, or even image. . .without any love attached. . .but then try to lecture the gay community about "morality." In other words, marriage really means nothing to them except an official symbol of heterosupremacy with a couple of thousand special rights laws attached - even if they don't ever have sex. So essentially marriage to straights is about the appearance of a man and a woman committed together, even if it is just a charade.

  • Posted By: kevinbgoode @ 11/20/2008 9:39:10 AM

Well, Lucius. . .why does anyone need your permission to marry, when straights don't have to get mine?

  • Posted By: Spyder08 @ 11/20/2008 9:38:14 AM

Have I moved to a different country? Last I checked the US Government was supposed to go by the rules and regulations set in the CONSTITUTION, not the Bible. As far as the government is concerned, marriage is a contract between two adults, nothing more, and nothing less. Religions can set limitations on who they want in their congregations' all they want; the government has NO right to do so. EVERY citizen has the same legal rights as every other citizen. Any argument saying that the government is able to deny any person any right is ridiculous.

I am not gay, I am very saddened by California's choice to say yes on 8, Im am a huge fan of equality being a woman I am still discriminated against daily. We are all equals and should be treated as such. Religion has to much say in Politics and they should be banned from donating there money to political campains I thought they were helping the homeless and to feed the hungry, hey all mormons how many kids are starving in America this month so you could help push a ban on Gay Marrage that has nothing to do with you? It is 2008 lets preach NO TO HATE. To all of you who are afraid of same sex couples kissing in public TOO BAD its happeining even if there not married, and to those people who you think you can stop your children from becoming gay, maybe your just stopping a future relationship with your own children, you can not predict wether any one at 7 will be gay as an adult you are only teaching them you will hate them if they are.

I would really like everyone who reads this to take a moment, step back, and think objectively about this issue. Many of you out there have personal beliefs that gay marriage is wrong. Some of you probably come to this conclusion because of your religious beliefs and others come to the conclusion because you simply don't understand or are comfortable with the concept of homosexuality. You have the freedom to believe that gay marriage is wrong. That is a God given right that has been supported by the Constitution of the USA. No one can take that away from you. Your opinions are yours and you can belive whatever you want to believe about this topic, BUT if you have the freedom to believe what you want to, then so does everyone else in the country. If another person wants to believe that homosexuality is ok, then they have the freedom to believe that as well. Although you may disagree, you can't beat someone else down for thinking differently. It's their God given right to believe what they feel is right, no matter how differently it is from your beliefs. That's the beauty of America. We have the freedom to make our own path through this world. Now, can you imagine a time when you were in school and you had a crush or fell in love and thought about getting married? Maybe growing up you thought about meeting someone special and starting a life together? In the midst of those daydreams, did you ever think that maybe someone else would say "You can't get married. I don't like who you picked for a spouse" or "You aren't getting married by the rules of my religion so there you can't get married"? If someone told you that, you would freak. "How dare they tell me that I can't get married. I love this person and they have no idea what we have together." If someone took away your ability to marry the person you chose based upon your religious and social beliefs, you would be outraged. Although you don't agree, it's the same thing for the homosexual community. Just because you don't believe it's right doesn't mean you can take away the freedom of another person to do what they believe is right.

Gay rights are not to be compared to civil rights. I believe all human beings have rights, but when you want to do something that different you must not expect everyone to accept it. African Americans were people who were slaves initially, Gays are people who are not slaves, they just want to do something different and wants everybody to accept it. I will not and can not accept anyting that God has declared sin. However, I do believe that every American should have human rights and not be discriminated against on their jobs or any where else.

It???s ironic that the homosexuals are calling this a violation of the separation between church and state. This tradition originated to protect the churches from the government, NOT the government from the churches, and that is needed now more than ever. In California, a Christian Doctor was recently taken to court and lost for refusing to perform artificial insemination on a lesbian, isn't that infringing on his first amendment right to practice his religion? This is just one example. What happens after same-sex marriage is legalized? Will the US churches then be forced to recognize and perform same-sex marriage ceremonies out of fear of being taken to court? It???s already happening in Europe and Canada. The US government should never have the right to dictate churches doctrine or enforce upon them any belief. This is not about gay rights. In California, they already have ever right that is available to married people and there are already some churches that recognize gay marriage and perform gay wedding ceremonies. This is about separation of church and state for the protection of the churches and their affiliated organizations.

Indeed; it has happened in Canada -- a place where the legal age of consent, as I understand it, is actually 14 years of age. Curious; how many parents here think their child is ready for a sexual relationship at 14, let alone a homosexual relationship? Jesus; we can not even legally get a job before 16 years of age, but they seem to think it is alight to pop out a kid or otherwise at 14.

As for previous posts, pertaining to matters of argument where a persons child is gay so everyone else should be stuck with it, too; it just doesn't hold water. Twin studies have actually proven scientifically that genes do not influence a persons sexuality. Educating ones self pertains to a great deal more than sitting ones butt in front of the six oclock news or Oprah, where most opinions are quite to the left. A right wing journalist is about as likely as finding Jacky O'nassis, Big Foot, and the Lockness Monster in one place, so consider the source.

Also; if ones neighbor gets divorced in this day and age, one is likely to do so as well; especially when one happens to support the cause. We live in a 70% divorce rate state, where 80% of those divorces are filed for by women. Do you really believe this to be mere coincidence, separate and apart from the personal? Whenever anything approaches 49% or better, it becomes societal norm, further influential. This, in and of its self, is proof that 80% of people do not think for themselves but go with the flow. Therefore, when in Rome???

Only a couple of quick remarks:
1- No civil right changes have ever come from a majority vote. It stands to be a logic thought, since the majority wants only to protect its own rights and the minorities..well, they are minorities, they are just numerically fewer. It is the courts who pass laws, to protect ALL.
2- The word "marriage" is not strictly attached to the word "religion". Civil marriage and religious marriage CAN and should co-exist (nobody really is asking to go to a church to get married).
3- The marriages of blacks with whites were illegal till 1967 (and backed by religious beliefs). It is incredible, today.
    4 - It will happen!

The real tradgedy is that Homo's are going to end up in hell along with all the unbelievers who believe christians are bigots. Then the whole lot of them will be looking for a christian to tell them that Jesus " fairytale" The people have spoken and for now the right thing has been done. The needs of the many outweigh the lusts of the few. I think we should make a law to call them Homo's again. Gay and lesbian sounds too celebratory!!

    • Posted By: mcopley @ 11/20/2008 9:29:27 AM

Tell me again why the "HOMOS" are going to HELL?

  • Posted By: MrDuffy @ 11/16/2008 12:45:00 PM

The people have spoken. Get over it.
Be happy with your civil union and leave marriage the way GOD commands.
The more you fight the Eternal, the more unhappy you will be.
America in general is finding this out now with the beginning of His punishment.

    • Posted By: im.thatoneguy @ 11/16/2008 7:07:13 PM

      Ahhhhh yes. The bible.

Also let us imprison and execute those who commit adultry.
Also let us place constitutional bans on inter-faith marriages.

Malachi 2:11: "Judah hath dealt treacherously, and an abomination is committed in Israel and in Jerusalem; for Judah hath profaned the holiness of the LORD which he loved, and hath married the daughter of a strange god."

2 Corinthians 6:14-15: "Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel?" (KJV)

Also let us forbid interracial marriage as your racist forefathers told us the bible instructed us.

      Also we should tolerate polygomy.

Well... maybe just maybe it would be easiest if we approached it like this. If your gay hating pastor/priest doesn't want to perform the ceremony. Don't recognize it. If they can find a god fearing man of the cloth or secular official willing to perform the ceremony then the government DOESN'T GET INVOLVED WITH DECSIONS OF RELIGIOUS FAITH.

      Why shouldn't Gays get married?

Because next thing we know they'll be marrying Dogs.
I suppose that's a fair enough reason if you think that a Gay human being and a dog are equal.

      Because it's a sin.
So is blasphemy. We haven't banned blasphemy. We need a non-biblical standpoint.

      Because their families are inferior.
So are single parent housholds statistically. Should we forbid children out of wedlock? Perhaps take them away in the event of a divorice. Maybe we should issue child bearing licenses. Forced sterilization until you are married and the state determines you to be a good couple. Brilliant!

      Because they can't have children.
Ok but we have to be consistent. That means we need to force the divorice of all married couples who do not have a child by menopause. And have the question of child raising intent on the marriage certificate.

Because their children will become Gay.
Oh no! They might also turn into Aliens! Or worse still... normal people. There is no corellation between the sexual orientation of the parent and child. Most gay children.... come from straight parents. Maybewe should forbid straight people from having childrn. As many as 10% of their children turn out GAY!

The lord god has spoken. "Stop using my book only when you feel like being bigots".

I can tell by this you are not a religious scholar and what book is yours. Any Christian knows the bible is God's book not yours. I can say that in 20 years or so there will be a move to make Polygomy legal. It will be interesting to see how the children of gay couples turn out when compared to the rest of society. Will they be more likely to be gay, will they be less likely to attend church of any kind, will they be more radical, etc.

        • Posted By: Blue in AZ @ 11/17/2008 9:01:46 PM

So, if gay couples are destined to produce gay kids and lead to the decimation of the human race, how do you explain all those gay kids produced from hetero couples? I don't have any gay friends who were raised by gay parents and I have a LOT of gay friends.

actually he makes alot of good points...if your going to place a ban on one "kind of person" than here in america everyone must comply, it is the majority that won after all right? it cant be one sided as some of you would wish. the laws must accomodate everyone in the country, you cant just leave out inconsiderate, inconsistant, intolerant pew huggers from the law.... he/she made alot of very relevant points....

    • Posted By: Blue in AZ @ 11/17/2008 9:05:38 PM

If we relied on the voice of the people, we'd still have segregation and women could not vote. It's called the Constitution and it trumps the voice of the people.

It's the way They (the founders) commanded it. And in case you didn't notice it, Their Word (the Constitution) is law, not His (the 10 Commandments).

If a couple of Rump Ranger's want to live together and call it a marriage , then so be it. I cannot understand how a perverted sexual preference can turn into a religion for some people. For some reason a lrge number of Gays/Lesbians seem to want to rub it in everyones faces that there "Gay" and get preferencial treatment for it.
Why not let them have "Civil Unions" like in vermont , and they can be happy.
