Popular vote for Barack Obama: 52.7%
    Popular vote against Obama: 46.0%
The media calls this win a landslide.

Yes On Prop 8: 52.2% of the votes
No On Prop 8: 47.8% of the votes
The media calls this win a "narrow margin."

What a ridiculous double standard. These are both solid wins. You don't see McCain's supporters taking to the streets or boycotting business owners who supported Obama's campaign.

    Very interesting indeed.

Well McCain's supporters aren't having their marriages overturned, either.

I'm glad I'm not gay. Hopefully none of my kids will be either. If they are, however, they need to suck it up and realize the majority of people aren't like that and don't want to hear about it. The majority of people don't care about these protests. Just be gay and move on.

    • Posted By: chris s. @ 11/17/2008 8:46:53 PM

If you don't see it then it doesn't exist, right? Someday, denying gays to marry will be thought of as about as evolved as denying blacks and women the right to vote. By the way, how does it harm you in ANY way at all? Or, are you really that insecure? I'm not gay but just pretty liberal, obviously.

      • Posted By: sjbrock80 @ 11/18/2008 4:27:47 PM

Exactly my point, I don't care about it in ANY way, so I don't care about the people who feel persecuted by it. No matter how many times I hear it, denying blacks and women rights is completely different than denying gays rights. Denying rights to ones chosen life is no where near the same to denying rights to ones given life.

        • Posted By: Doc Howl @ 11/18/2008 4:58:42 PM

Okay. So you wouldn't be complaining if, say, the democrats pass an additional tax on registered republicans? I mean, you CHOSE to be a republican, right?

          • Posted By: sjbrock80 @ 11/18/2008 7:18:16 PM

Exactly right. I'm a smoker. In case you're not aware, smokers pay tons of tax and have been kicked outdoors.

Don't bother posting. I've seen the response before. "Since you're doing something unhealthy for others, you shouldn't be allowed to smoke near people."

The premise is the same. I do something out of choice that a majority of people disprove of and have to face the consequences. It's part of life. That does not give me the sudden entitlement to call every anti-smoker a bigot and hate-monger, or does it?

Thank you for your article and your opinions Mr. Jefferson, setting aside the Mormon Church and the black voters. Prop 8 is about a pursuit of happines by being in a committed relationship, where most hetersexuals think gay/lesbians are simply promiscous and one night stand people. If, our society really cares so deeply about permanence and sanctuity of marriage, why not redirect our focus to eliminating infidelities and divorce rate. Chance of a happy marriage is only 50% today (pretty scary) and yet even though the numbers are so low, gay/lesbian still want to have a chance at being married, why deny it to them. And please, do not quote me the Bible, we are all sinners, who are we to judge, and who are we to stop other human being from just simply being with the love of their life for the rest of of their time in this one world we have. On the other hand, prop 8 will be resolved by Supreme Court, I believe just compare the numbers year 2000, 60% voted for it, 2008, 52% it will happen and it will happen before our own eyes. And is 52%really a majority ???
BTW, I am a caucasian woman from CA, married for 23 years and misreable for 13 years.

    • Posted By: emilyam @ 11/18/2008 6:55:09 PM

      "Is 52%really a majority ???"

It's enough of one to have made Barack Obama our president elect.

Have some of you listened to yourselves recently? Anyone who doesn't like my opinions is a meanie and a bigot. What kind of nonsense is that? Your senses of entitlement are ridiculous. No one owes you a damn bit of fairness with anything about gayness. For some reason, you think everyone needs to accept everything about everyone else and if they don't, they are hate-mongers. Well, accept me, I can't stand gays. If you don't accept that, you're the bigots.

  • Posted By: Renegade.exe @ 11/18/2008 5:13:42 PM

The man-woman union definition is outdated; Marriage can easily be defined as a marriage of two people, sometimes even multiple persons, it is not a matter of what marriage is anymore, it is a matter of what we want to recognize it as, what we want to allow as marriage---and why shouldn't we allow marriage between two people of the same sex?

  • Posted By: ReasonedTraveler @ 11/18/2008 1:55:02 PM

Wonderful article, David. Just one thing, though. As a gay resident of Salt Lake City, I find it horrifying that some activists are suggesting boycotting our ski resorts and businesses. While I am livid a the role the LDS Church played in forcing through Prop. 8, please recognize that Salt Lake City has a large and vibrant GLBT population. We have a police force that has works very hard to reach out to and work with the gay community. Our ski resorts (both in Salt Lake and in Park City) are staffed by many gay and lesbian employees. I could go on and on. If you wish to boycott Mormon organizations, fine, but make sure you know what you're boycotting.

    • Posted By: Doc Howl @ 11/18/2008 4:56:26 PM

Good point. I would suggest that a better alternative is to agitate for the revocation of the Mormons' tax exempt status, effective the date the first dime was spent on Prop 8, combined with a boycott of Mormon-run businesses and media outlets.

Bottom line: Sodomy is a sin and no matter how many people say other wise it will always be a sin. No matter how many people decide cocaine use is okay I don't think it should be legalized or celebrated. I have family members with drug problems and I know they're good people, but just because they're good people I don't have to accept their habits and self indulgies in a manner that will expose my children.

With your abhorrent attitude, I'm truly sorry to hear that you are raising children.

      • Posted By: sjbrock80 @ 11/18/2008 4:33:35 PM

If my attitude is abhorrent because I don't agree with you, then so be it. My children are being raised responsibly and morally. I refuse to teach my children that gays are morally responsible when they are obviously not. I'm not perfect, but I admit my mistakes instead of trying to convince everyone it's right and ok.

Have you ever had to explain to your 10 year old son why another 10 year old boy tries to cuddle up to him and kiss him? My son was horrified and disgusted at the whole thing. Why should he just have to accept it? I don't condone him being mean to the gay boy, but my son does not HAVE to accept other people's vile behavior. So save your abhorrent or bigot speech. It's just about normal life and normal people don't want to accept this freakish onslaught of disgusting human beings hiding behind the mask of diversity.

        • Posted By: Doc Howl @ 11/18/2008 4:45:58 PM

WHAT RIGHT YOU TALKING ABOUT?DON'T YOU GET IT? THAT "RIGHT"IS NONEXISTENT? HOW ABOUT OBEYING THE "WILL OF THE PEOPLE" INSTEAD?

        • Posted By: Doc Howl @ 11/18/2008 3:08:34 PM

No, that right is not non-existent. It is covered by amendment XIV (equal protection under law), and amendment IX...and article VI of the US constitution overrides the CA constitution, when it comes to individual liberties. Lastly, the constitution overrides the will of the people; ie, the people cannot vote away the rights of citizens.

Why do you hate the constitution, Joey?

  • Posted By: Jmon @ 11/17/2008 11:03:32 PM

Why do gays like to play the victim so much? They act as if they are forced to attend separate schools or drink from separate drinking fountains. The people decided that marriage is between a man and a woman and the gay rights activists act as if they are second class citizens. Wake up! Turn on the television, and you will see that our culture celebrates gays and accepts their lifestyle just fine. Last I checked, a gay man or a lesbian has the exact same legal rights as me, has just as good a chance of being hired to a job as me, and can live wherever he or she wants, just like me. What the author fails to understand is that homosexuality has and always will be a small, yet vocal minority. Why then should the majority of our society be FORCED to accept their lifestyle as good, especially when a majority of its citizens concur through a democratic process that marriage is between a man and a woman? That right there is a blatant violation of my civil right to believe what I want to believe without being labeled a bigot or intolerant.
Oh and one more thing, the law doesn't discriminate because the law equally restricts all citizens from marrying a person of the same gender. So in other words, I, a heterosexual male, can no more marry a man than can a homosexual male. So much for inequality and discrimination.

Nobody can take away their civil right-- their human right-- to marry the one they love. No church, no statute, no politician, nobody. THEY WILL BE MARRIED. THEY WILL BE RECOGNIZED. No group of people can abridge the rights of another group to create a sub-class of populous. That is a violation of the Constitution. We are ALL EQUAL. This is not over, and if you think your bigotry can stop them, well, you have another thing coming. When enough of the hate filled fear mongers die off, MARRIAGE (not civil unions) MARRIAGE will be enjoyed by all.

Ever notice , how so many macho men, who are repulsed by the idea of gays are turned on by the idea of two women together. Hypocracy. Seems there is an exception to the rule. Even for mormen or other good christian men. Though they will seldom admit it. More than a couple of men have mentioned how HOT Ellen DeGeneras' [sp?] significant other is. Al Bundy would be proud!

  • Posted By: jdm9499 @ 11/16/2008 5:09:53 AM

The very definition of marriage is a union between a man and a woman. That's a non-religious definition. The bottom line is that gay's confuse a sexual fetish with 'love'. Humans were created to reproduce. How would life evolve if everyone was gay? The male private part was not created to enter another males rear end. Do you know what happens? Google PINK SOCK, no need to turn your filter off. I would like to do things that are not allowed by the law, should there just be no laws so that everyone can be happy to do as they wish? It's all a sexual fetish, like bondage, bukkake, trannies, etc. No one is born gay. You were either rebelling, were put in a situation early on that was your first sexual experience or thought and triggered your choice of becoming gay. No matter what the case is, is about the sex and atmoshpere that keeps one to stay gay. The gay community is growing stronger and stronger, so it's fairly open now to express your sexuality, and generation after generation society is becoming more used to gay's. And laws are changing and probably will change in a couple more generations leaning towards legalizing gay marriage across the entire US. Other cultures around the world fortunatly recognizes what real marriage is. America is sadly becoming a country of self indulgeance. As long as everyone is happy everything is ok. Gay marriage is becoming legal faster then marijuana is! How is that possible? Marijuana is natural isn't it? It makes me happy....and it should be my right to be happy and feel good, right? It's not ok to not like a person because they are gay...that is discrimination. Hating someone because they are black, asian or hispanic or gay is discrimination. It's not discrimination when the law says gay's cannot marry. Please understand that being gay is a lifestyle of sexual fetish. I leave you with two words I said previosly.....PINK SOCK.

Sounds like you know a LOT about fetishes, perv. Your comments remind me of this guy in high school who used to scream about fags all the time. He came out not long after our 10 year reunion.

So, if marriage should be based on reproduction, I'd like to know when all us childless hetero couples are going to have their licenses torn up?
