Why don't you make a new poll about anti-americanism in Turkey ?
I bet it will not be more than 35 % cause planner of anti americanism,Ergenekon Terorists are all in jail now.
Anti americanist peoples in Turkey are actualy supporter of CHP ( nationlist republican party ) and number of their votes is around 22 %.

  • Posted By: Teomete @ 05/23/2009 10:47:01 AM

Anti americanism was a plan of Ergenekon ( Turkish Gladio ) and they have been very succesful on it.
Blaming current governmet AKP ( Justice and Development party ) for anti-americanism is definetly hidden agenda of Mr.Cagaptay. Turks were against to Bush and his neo con fellows. Why don't you make new poll about anti-americanism in Turkey and see the result since Obama has been elected as a President and our cruel Christian and Jewish killer teror organisation Ergenekon (Monsterous Turkish Gladio ) has been prisoned. You will see and understand if there is no Ergenekon instrument Anti-americanism is just as permanent as foam.
I recommend you to watch out Mr.Cagaptay since he is supporter of ultra anti-americanist Ergenekon Terorist he is very likely to harm Americans.

there is no need to dignify this shallow article and pseudo-intellectual with a comment...So I'll stop

Such a manipulative approach not to mention shallow rhetoric of it. So Mr. Obama should read this whole essay as black is white white is black.

So sad to read such an imbecile article on Newsweek. AKP has been accused of being too close to the US in Turkey, and in fact, they lose a lot of votes for that. These neocons, like Soner, hate AKP ideologically. They are in close relatons with ultranationalists or with some groups who fake ultranationalism. They are the ones who pushes Anti-Americanism in Turkey. And the very same neocons, try to portray AKP as anti-American. Soner is part of this conspiracy, and so sad he could use Newsweek.

Soner Cagaptay is not an expert on Turkey. just check his record. All his predictions in the past were wrong. He's trying to push an self-interested agenda to weaken the curent goverment in Turkey. If Soner's opinions are useful for anything, there's a very strong chance the opposite of what he says will happen.

And this is a shame for newsweek to publish an essay based on imagination..

This friend is not actually living in Turkiye or he has no idea of US's foreign politics for the last 8 years... it is not only Turiye but almost whole east society think they're unter the threat of US attack, thanks to the beloved(!) Bush. No matter what Turkish government do, they cannot force the whole nation to love Bush or the people who v??ted for him. Mr. Cagatay must be so young so he cannot remember the times of Clinton, and Turkish people's admire to him. He was the one who visited us after the earthquake in 1999. I am not an AKP fan but for the first time this country actually keep in touch with Armenia, Greece.. this is AKP's diplomatic victory. they saved us from being a nation of fear like the ex-governments did.

This guy's main agenda is to get rid of AKP in Turkey. We have many of them in Turkey and this guy is no different. The same people spread rumor in Turkey saying that AKP has US backing and they are a puppet of the US. In US, they say they are not pro-western enough. The idea is to force them to talk pro-western in Turkey so that they can spread their rumor more in Turkey. There is no truth in this article.

WE HATE IMPERIALIST COUNTRIES WHO CONSIDER THEIRSELVES SUPERIORS AND SUPERPOWERS. SUPERPOWERS ARE SUPER STUPID THEY DONT KNOW HOW TO MAKE GOOD AND DELICIOUS FOOD.FIRST LEARN TO MAKE GOOD FOOD THEN BE SUPERPOWER.WE TURKISH PEOPLE HAVE A SUPERIOR CULTURE MAYBE WE CAN HELP TO THE PEOPLE OF SUPERPOWERS

Correct analysis by Soner. Of course the AKP will deny these allegations but it is inevitable to observe an umprecedented rise of anti-Americanism under the AKP regime. However, we should add to this analysis that anti-americanism is fed across the whole political spectrum including leftist who claim to be the guardians of Ataturk's legacy...how ironic and sad. This anti-Americanism and addiction to the spread of ridiculous and useless conspiracy theories has become a serious disease and needs to be cured thoroughly. Instead I propse the resurgence of a form of anti-Frensich which would have my all blessing!

    Whose man in Washington?
    ??hsan Da??i Today's Zaman
It is really strange to see a respected newsmagazine like Newsweek allow someone to use its pages for a silly and obvious piece of misinformation. Anybody who has followed Turkey recently can understand easily that the commentary that appeared in the magazine last week by a Turkish "expert" based in Washington is nothing but a dishonest and deliberate act of misinformation.

The author clumsily tries to portray the current government as anti-Western, trying to take Turkey away from the West. What is outrageous is that the people in Ankara for whom the author and his lady friend in D.C. are busy writing reports are the ones who have become staunch enemies of the West.

You cannot hide that it is your men in Ankara who view globalization as an American plot against Turkey.

It is your men in Ankara who approach the EU as the enemy, not because the EU damages Turkey's territorial integrity, but because it threatens their privileges.

It is your men in Ankara who are prepared to go to war against the US and abandon NATO.

So tell yourself and your men in Ankara to stop looking for an undemocratic Turkey from which you all hope to benefit.

Neither the Turkish people and government nor the new American administration will allow this.

You better get accustomed to living in your neocon ghetto in D.C.

    Sorry, guys.

Maybe the US should have let the SERBS run amok in Bosnia. There are Bosnians being found dead in A-stan for a while now. The US should have drawn the line in Croatia and Slovenia, coz the thanks we got from the Bosnian moslems are bullets being fired at us. Our enemies far out weigh our allies now. Its turning into a moslem "jihad" that encompasses the globe. The hell with the turks, and NO WAY should US troops come under Iraqi jurisdiction. Thanks Dubya, for sticking it to us, YOU are a FAILURE. Maliki will try and take the Kurds land and OIL just like Saddam. The Iranians won this war, we just paid for it. IN BLOOD. S.O.B.'s!!!!!!

Turkey has "unofficially" turned anti-American. The AKP has fomented this hatred, and the Obama Admin. had better tell them where they stand. Is there an opposition group? If so, EVERY effort should be made to get rid of the AKP, and get the climate there back to normal. A red flag was the Turks refusal to let the 4th ID pass through on thier way to Iraq. Another NATO member in name only. INCIRLIK is very important to US ops in the region, and sooner or later they will want us gone. The EU is spineless, with the exception of the UK, and will not pressure this gov. that is sliding towards islamic fundamentalism. The Kurds are TRUE allies, who have fought and died alongside US forces. We should embrace this relationship, nurture it, and yes, build a PERMANENT base there. Turkey is a future enemy, along with thier moslem "brothers" are taking over W. Europe, sucking thier social programs dry. The clash of civilizations is years old now, its just the West don't want to admit it. Keep letting the Turks in, they have crashed the Gates of Vienna w/out firing a shot. The Turks continue to deny the Armenian genocide, but the Armenians will NEVER forget. Turkey has thrown its lot in with the islamic world, they are really showing who they really are, wat thier intentions are. NATO is a FAILURE. If NATO is to survive, its future is in the E. European and Central European nations that have joined. Turkey is a future enemy-NO, they are the enemy-NOW.

    Dear Readers,
Allow me to shed some light on MR Cagaptay's article, according to MR Cagaptay statement when Turkey or turkish people will love United state or West, is when USA become partner with Turkey commiting genocides against Kurdish People,United has been supporting Turkey for last 50 years!. kurds are estimeted around 25 million people in Turkey. Kurdish People in Turkey are deprived from basic political, cultural and social rights, So Dear President Obama, you Said "America need change and change has came to America". Kurdish people also fight and struggling for their freedon, please let us to achieve that chnage too.

    • Posted By: siktirgit @ 11/17/2008 5:07:09 AM

      Dear Ciwan Tekosher,
If you are not happy with the services and the rights provided to you by Turkey, you are more than welcome to pack your family and your belongings and move to a place where you can get a better service or rights just for being a Kurd. Turkey is not a rich country to carry the dead weight of 25 million uneducated, unskilled and ungrateful Kurds so far did nothing but suck the blood society and the money of the government. If it wasn't up to the Kurds like you Turkey would have been in much better place socially and economically. I have lived in Turkey many years and I can assure you do NOT get treated differently for being a Kurd. Kurds are in every city, in every town and in every neighborhood. They have identical rights like rest of the country and they have the benefits like everybody else in the country. Why don???t you for a change stop listing your demands and ask yourself what you can do to help the only government actually cares about you and your well beings of your kids.

      • Posted By: wearetheworld @ 11/21/2008 4:24:10 AM

In addition, again though I am Turkish and at my 20s, I am aware of that the MIlitary services have tried to assimilate Kurdish people for years and they have not been given their right to write, speak or be educated in their own language and they have been forced to say they are Turkish for years...and now Turkey suffers from PKK and the militans in that terrorist group are the poor, uneducated Kurdish young people who should have been our sisters and brothers all through the years...Military services should accept the vital mistake it has done. And the reality is a country led my Military forces will never accomplish to become a developped country though things have changed on Military side after AKP`s victory in the elections.

"There is now a tsunami of young Turks ready to die while trying to kill Americans". As a Turkish person, I completely disagree with that. This is some kind of a prejudice of America about Turkey or may be this pessimism of Mr.Obama comes from his positive feelings and support about the Armenians?
On the other hand, I totally agree that Turkish government misleads the public as 80% of the public is undereducated in Turkey.

The EU only sees profit (& no cost) in including Turkey. So like China, Turkey plays the greedy West for sucker. No wonder if the EU embraces Islam, belligerence et al

In no way shape or form does Turkey Belong to the West. How could it? They are not a European people. They have caused unlimted suffering.

  • Posted By: htk079 @ 11/18/2008 9:40:49 PM

Cagaptay might be doing a good job as a Turkey expert in a neo-conservative think tank with his self-assigned duty, which is to frame his country's government as anti-American and anti-West while in reality the governing party is the most eager political group in Turkey who pushes for deeper relations with the United States and full membership in the EU. If Turks are anti-American it is not because of the AK Party government but because of Bush administration's foreign policy in the Middle East. the Iraq War, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the US role in supporting Kurdish terrorist groups are primary reasons for this record-low image. Turks have nothing to be ashamed of it. Obama government can help this image problem not by "reminding" Turkey that it belongs to the West but by changing US foreign policy in the Middle East.
