for all the serios vegitarians out there I have a legitamate question. I have a sever case of crohns diseas an auto imune disease of the digestive tract. I become physically sick from the consuption of plant fiber to the point of bleeding and surgury. even one carrot stick can have me heaving with cramps for six hours or more, I cannot eat annything gassy or that contains skins, corn, beans ect... I have a high metabolism that requires upward of 2500 calories a day to maintain a 5'7'' 140 lb frame with higher than normal protien requirements due to low body fat and a high anarobic metabolism ( my body dousn't differentiate well between fat and muscle during weight loss) a simple stomach bug with nausea can cause my to lose a pound a day for up to a week, this is not fluid loss. what could you possibly eat other than animal protien to keep up this frame and body type? p.s. it will take me two months at almost 3000 calories to regain those seven pounds with the aid of balanced protien drinks.

My husband and i are vegetarians. We find the Veat Meat (Mock) Chicken Nuggets with Tofurky Gravy a good vegetarian substitute, tasting much better than other products we've tried over the years. (both products are found in the frozen food section) I add fresh sauted mushrooms and onions to the gravy to give it body, though it's fine without. When i go to a family function, i just bring this dish (of course discussing it
with the host/hostess ahead of time). Usually, most of the non-vegetarians want to try it, so i bring plenty, and some of the non-vegetarians (not all) say they actually like it better than the real turkey! My husband and i were the only vegetarians in my family; now after 15 years my mom and brothers eat mostly vegetarian... but not because we tried to convince them... they came to it on their own... lead by example... no drama... when my husband and i came for our first holiday meal with my family after it had been several years since i had been able to spend a holiday with my folks, my mother didn't take the fact that we were vegetarians seriously. She cooked a meat lasanga, a favorite family recipe... I just found an old bottle of Ragu Pasta Sauce and some pasta in the cupboard and made us some vegie substitute quickly... and we ate along with the rest of the family... if you are a vegetarian, offer to be a part of the solution when you inform your non-vegetarian host in advance that you're vegetarian... its a lot of love and toil that goes into creating a meal for a gathering; do your part to eliminate stressing the host/hostess as much as possible, so everyone can just
be thankful and enjoy being together rather than being so food focussed....

I reffer to jet as small fast aircraft and airplane as commercial flight, didn't think that one through on my personal verbage. oops

  • Posted By: spuds @ 11/21/2008 1:45:53 AM

What I mean is perhaps back up a bit get to know someone, then tell them your personal ways.
Why is that have to be your lead in? Idle talk is just that, not a personal attack that has to be sprung upon first meating. Just because someone says hello you dont need to tell your lifes story.

last time I checked a jet was an airplane

Why is it when ever you meet someone new, and they are either vegetarians or from the other group. Single mothers, that is the first thing they say. Hi I am so and so and I am a vegetarian, or Hi I am so and so and I am a single mother. What is with that, why not just buy a name tag or something. No one else in any other group does this, hi I am so and so I am a meat eater......its never done. why the need to toss the info into someones face when you first meet them.

    • Posted By: Charisma73 @ 11/21/2008 1:30:35 AM

I don't know who you hang around with but I have never introduced myself as a vegetarian. If it comes up, I say something. No big deal. I don't know any vegetarian that introduces themselves as one either. If they do, then I agree with you.

because it can be a rather heated subject and I want people to be aware of where I stand in light of who I am so that they can fully appreciat or disregard my opinion based one my worth as a human being.
and actually people do it in every group " hi i'm so and so, i prefer jets over airplanes, boots over shoes, long hair over short, its the conversational point dumb ass meat over veg

Ah! you are even more uneducated than I though. never heard of Specisim before?
Maybe is time for you to read a little bit, It wouldn't cause you brain damage.
Caling people names only shows how you run out of logics-and how fast!
Thanks for proving my point-that was too of easy arugument to win.
Can't refute anything I said so you are desperate to insult others now? I pitty you!

    • Posted By: mauigirl76 @ 11/21/2008 1:19:26 AM

Maybe not brain damage but as long as your on the subject you should use the little icon on the top of your page that says " spell check ".

That would help your point to be taken more seriously.

I've been a vegetarian for 15 years. Every Thanksgiving I get the usual taunting from my 3 little sisters and Mom but for our family it's "all in good fun". Just as I hope no one judges me for choosing to not eat meat, I don't judge them. I never expect people to accommodate for me. If they do I feel a bit guilty because I get that they're not in the same mine frame and it takes a lot of extra planning and creates more anxiety in doing so. For the vegetarians who do judge I get it to an extent. I love animals....I've always had a freakish connection with them. I praise anyone who stands true to their beliefs. For me, I try to understand where everyone is coming from, so if you enjoy turkey...eat it. I don't ever give people grief for choosing to eat meat, so I ask you reciprocate by showing the same respect for other vegetarians who are open minded. I whole heartedly believe Thanksgiving is about giving thanks to everything positive in and around you and your family's life. It's not about ???that??? person not eating turkey, or how bad Tofurkery tastes. Get over it and focus on what matters.

I usually keep my mouth shut while reading these comment boards, but I can't tonight. I was raised near farms and helped butcher chickens at my friend's family farm. Usually I couldn't eat chicken for about two weeks after. But these are domestic animals were put on earth to feed and clothe us. I have a problem with abusing them, but I also have a problem with the way most of the people here that jump on a band wagon about issues they know very little about. My 15 year old daughter is a vegetarian and I would have to say she has been one for most of if not all of her life. She is onemot because of animals, she is one just for the plain simple truth that she doesn't like meat. My future daughter in law is a vegan for the same reason, she just don't like the taste. I sware most of you people have no lives other than to sit here and argue about something so stupid. Thanksgiving is for what you are thankful for not what is on your plate.

In that the case I would like to point out the gall bladder which produces large amounts of enzymes for the sole perpose of digesting fats. vegetarianism is a choise which must be made carefully with mind to the availability of proper substitutes, I prefer the meaty shortcut. Oh and by the way animals have no rights. before you argue give me the scientific kingdom of the sea anemone

I see the evil internet tried to intercept your first post... and then spit it back out...I love the boards here.

Cool for you. I'm actually not much of a fan of turkey itself (it's on my not-so-great list with chicken and pork) but I think I'd have to go awhile without meat before I could truly appreciate tofurky. But then again... I'm not really a highly processed foods kinda girl.

I am a vegetarian and I enjoy Tofurky. Maybe I'm just used to Tofu or something but I like it better than real meat. It's surprisingly tasty and not gross. I highly recommend it.

I'm a vegetarian and I have to say, I love Tofurky. I really do. I guess I'm used to tofu or something, but I prefer it to real meat. It's surprisingly good.

Do you subscribe to all of Einstein's life decisions? He didn't think much of women. I'll respect his work in hte sciences, I'm not going to deify the man. He's a man. Cool. You do something that he does. Good for you. I don't. Good for me.

As I said before, I do eat meat, but I can't say that its opitmal, health wise, environmentally and maybe even morally. Maybe. But I do. Maybe someday I'll stop. But if I do, it will be a quiet affair, not a lifestyle that I will try to shove in people's faces. Many of the vegetarians and vegans on here seem to be wonderful. They make their points but they don't try to get preachy. I like that. Those people have been great.

Enter Your CommI'm sorry that I seemed to be pushy, and maybe even shoving this in peoples faces, that was not my intention, and I apologize. This is not something that I usually do, and I was just getting upset. I am not trying to force this upon anyone, I am simply trying to educate people so that maybe one day they might change their diet, or even so that they will be more aware and educated about the issue. I can only hope that all of you will do the research yourself, and decide on what you think is right. It took me 2 years of debating within myself, and spending hours and hours doing research, before I made the change to a non-meat diet, and I honestly believe that it has changed my life for the better. ent

you're all probably going to hate me now, but... toa... I've eaten raw beef before. Ain't bad.
Now the thought of raw pork or chicken does make me want to yack all over the place.

    • Posted By: toadaria @ 11/21/2008 12:56:31 AM

Alright. At least you admit it.
I love sushi, and I used to like fishing quite a lot, but not so I could kill fish, I just liked spending quality time with my dad. However when I had to dissect a shark in a bio class I became appalled at how excited other were to cut something that used to be living. The more I researched about my dinning options, the scientific evidence behind having a no-meat diet, the environmental good it could do for the world, and the rest of that stuff that sounds preachy to some but is to me a good reason, I became convinced that I wanted to be a vegetarian.

    • Posted By: nln548 @ 11/21/2008 12:55:30 AM

Was it raw ground beef? The chewing was done for you. Don't tell me you took a raw steak and started knawing on it?
