Many years ago, my son asked to bring his then-girlfriend home for Christmas dinner. So I went all-out, cooking a turkey and all the stuff that goes with it. My son waited until the two of them arrived at my house to mention, Oh, by the way, she was a vegetarian. I was miffed. Not with her; with him. He could have TOLD ME BEFOREHAND and I could've cooked something else for her. In the event, there were plenty of things she could eat (she was vegetarian, not vegan), but if I'd known I could have made something with protein in it for her. Kids!

Ironic how an article specifically aimed at tackling social discretion during such an occasion has turned into such a heated discussion

Well I guess time2evolve has moved on and I will too. Have a good Thanksgiving no matter what is on your menu.

Buy your own frigging food. If I was so self-limiting that I could only eat tree bark, I wouldn't go to dinner parties or any other type of event and expect the hostess to procure treebark just for me.

Not eating certain foods for medical reasons? Cool. And hopefully your host will respect that.
Not eating meat for medical or moral rasons? Cool. Hopefully the meal isn't an orgy of meat and the salad isn't covered in bacon drippings. I would think it's not that difficult as a host to find a few good vegetarian sides.
If you've decided however, to only eat daisys and lima beans, don't expect your host to make everyone else eat only daiys and lima beans to suit you.
I think the hostess' daughter was onto something. If you're going to be absurd in your limitations, don't expect everyone to cater to you. Don't be so friggin' rude. If you think I'm wrong, copy and paste what you wrote here and send it to Miss Manners. She'll have a thing or two to say to you.

I have been a vegan for 20 years; it's a lifestyle, rather than just what I eat. When I first became a vegan my brother would always wave a piece of meat in front of me saying you know you want this. I just brushed the meat and his playing aside, but he didn't let up for quite a few years. I asked him to leave me alone, finally saying it was my choice. He finally stopped. Each Thanksgiving for the past 20 years is a bit awkward for me

kennekkjjkjkseeing that dead turkey on the table. Very sad. There are no other vegetarians or vegans in my family or my extended family. This year the hostess of the dinner sent me the menu and green beans was the only thing I could eat and I mentioned that to her. She was perplexed not knowing that I didn't eat dairy either. This sent her into confusion as to what to do. I mean she was stressed over this!! She then talked to my daughter about it and my daughter suggested I bring my own dinner!!!! I'm like, what???? Bring my own dinner to a big family Thanksgiving? The hostess couldn't heat up at least a frozen tofu burger for me? Turns out that my daughter is going to make something for me and take it. I was on the brink of saying that I would not be going there. I truly believe that if there is a vegetarian/vegan in your extended family and you are hosting whatever occasion it is, you should make something special for that person. They are inviting you into their home. (By the way, I am going to a vegan potluck at a park earlier in the day which will be SO nice!!)

Note other people of this conversation that that was a wise move.

Well that's the funny thing, time2, most of these lovely folks who are pushing their views on us and telling us how bad we are, are the same people who proclaim to friends and coworkers that they are open minded. Try some tolerance for a change. We have to live with you, you can live with us.

And Specism, miss H? WTF. I thought I'd heard anything. Thank you for contributing to the dumbing down of America, not to mention trying to project your own intolerance on others. Here... I'll come up with an equally stupid term for you, you.... evil.... Herbist. hehehehe

    • Posted By: nln548 @ 11/21/2008 12:15:27 AM

Speciesism is not a new concept Red Bee. Educate yourself, watch some footage, have some compassion.

      • Posted By: Sarah-H @ 11/21/2008 12:19:55 AM

she has never heard of Specisim before........why is that so unsurprising?
Just like the rest of her posts---is revealing!!

  • Posted By: RedBee @ 11/21/2008 12:15:57 AM

I'm sorry. Right now I spend my time reading tax and bankruptcy, not about new labels to put on people I don't like.
Maybe when I have a break I'll dig up some new hateful labels to throw around, all while proclaiming my highly-evolved sense of open mindedness, acceptance and tolerance.

I would refute your points if there were something worth refuting. Honestly, to me, you're more like a punching bag. Fun to whack around for awhile, but really not gonna hurt me back. Don't worry; I'll probably get bored soon.

Note also that I will not enter this odd B12 fight. This is because I don't want to BS about something I admit I don't know much about.

  • Posted By: Sarah-H @ 11/21/2008 12:02:13 AM

too bad stating facts about B12 is offensive to you!
I am no member of Peta, but even if I were to be one is not relevent. You need to learn how to make a rational argument and not use all kinds of logical fallacies in one sentense or two..

    • Posted By: time2getOffHighHorse @ 11/21/2008 12:13:58 AM

Sorry, it wasn't about your B12 argument (which I could care less about), but rather your comment that vegetarians eat more "yummy foods" then those that "eat animal corpses." First of all, the fact that your limiting yourself to eating vegetables limits the variety that you are even willing to eat. People who eat ONLY meat would suffer from the same thing. People like ME like to eat both, in fact, I only have meat on select days of the week, and LOVE vegetarian dishes!

Sorry if being in the same boat as time2evolve and the like offends you, but, well there it is.

And what, exactly, are the logical fallacies in my comments? Not to sound condescending, I just want to know so maybe I can be clearer about certain things.

Also, you'll be surprised on how being a PETA member is relevant to what we're talking about, not that you are one.

  • Posted By: RedBee @ 11/20/2008 11:31:25 PM

Agreed Tallboy. Talk about genocide. The yams barely had a chance. They can't run. They can't hide. And just because you can't hear them screaming as you callously hack them apart doesn't mean they don't feel the pain.
    muahaha

    • Posted By: Charisma73 @ 11/20/2008 11:34:42 PM

You're an idiot. Plants don't have a nervous system. Therefore, they don't feel pain.

      • Posted By: Sarah-H @ 11/21/2008 12:12:51 AM

Enter Your Commen isn't it funny how the most idiotic "plants have feeling too" comes everytime. These people have no clue about biology/physioloy basic concepts. NONE!

good luck in your hunt for the appropriate homeless black transsexual vegetarian for your thanksgiving feast.....
(insert furrowed brow smily face icon here)

  • Posted By: extraears @ 11/21/2008 12:07:22 AM

Okay, that???s it. I'm a straight, white, middle class, omnivore. This Thanksgiving, I'm going to find a homeless black, transsexual, vegetarian and have them over for dinner. Maybe I can even get them to help cook! Jeez people, relax and get a life of your own!

P.S. mauigirl76, I don't know where you are getting your info. Probably the same place that say that the above mentioned transsexual guy will give me AIDS by sitting next to me at the table :~0

time2evolve did you get my response?

  • Posted By: JudgingYourScientificUnderstanding @ 11/21/2008 12:05:13 AM

Are you actually aware of what B12 does for the body, or are just throwing out random facts about B12 to help your case? Before you respond I urge you to reconsider your sources because I good source is not as good as a complete understanding of the topic. The same applies for the difference between unsaturated, saturated, and trans fats. If you don't understand the small difference between those and why it is bad then please don't reference it.

The Chicago Diner is an exemplary eatery for vegetarians to feast on savory, satiating and cruelty-free, meatless cuisine on Thanksgiving. Family members who are carnivores will also enjoy the fortifying culinary entrees.

Please before anyone comments about vegetarianism educate yourself! Most vegetarians aren't concerned in making a statement or how the food is digested into the the colon. Our concern is how the food gets to the table. The average person has no knowledge in the slaughtering practices and violence for the "Thankgiving Feast" to hit the table. I choose to not eat meat (as 7 other members of my family) also do because we dearly love every one of God's creatures and it bothers us to think of how these animals die for a family tradition. it's funny that after 20 years of being a vegetarian I find that more people have a problem with me not eating meat than I do with them eating it. It makes you wonder if meat eaters are so defensive because of second guessing. It's funny because I don't need to talk about it but I hear loudly from the other side....

    • Posted By: time2getOffHighHorse @ 11/21/2008 12:01:31 AM

I would feel bad that more people have problems with you not eating meat than you with them eating meat, if you were just a nice person, didn't push your agenda, or try to "educate" others about the meat-marketing processes, and just went on your merry way. If I saw you at a restaurant not eating meat, I really wouldn't care, and may even see if what you're eating is tasty and try it.

But if you ARE like vegetarians such as Sarah-H, time2evolve, and the like, then I wouldn't care less if people heckled you for not eating meat. In fact, I would encourage it, and I hope more people heckle you until you learn to stop being as intolerant of others as they are of you, and maybe, just maybe, they'll stop, or better, not notice that you are a vegetarian and just a person like everyone else.

I look forward to Thanksgiving - there is plenty to eat without the turkey and I feel good inside knowing I didn't contribute to the torture, kicking, stopping and being scalded alive that a turkey has to go through for our tradition. Bring on the veggies!
Human beings are not supposed to eat meat - we do not even have the same teeth as the carnivore! If that isn't proof enough isn't it pretty disgusting to realize the meat you eat has to rot in your colon before it comes out? Please read up on first the health benefits of being vegetarian and the negatives about eating meat. Secondly, educate yourself on the horrible and disgusting pain and torture that is factory farming.

    • Posted By: shigahdeebah @ 11/20/2008 11:58:50 PM

GET AN EDUCATION YOU SAY!!! Have you read your own post??
There are plenty of easily researched and documented companies for the humane raising and killing of livestock.
Secondly for teeth you have incisors, canines. bicuspids and molars. only the last two are shared with herbivores, the front with carnivores.
We are therefore designed to be capable of eating meat.
Meat does not rot in the colon but is mixed with enzymes in the the stomach and jejunum (a part of the small intestine) and is digested in the first 6 to 12 inches of the small intestine.
Furthermore the 4 parts of the colon primarily serve for fluid absorption and as a collecting site for excrement before it leaves the body.
While I personally choose to eat meat I can easily the benefits of either lifestyle so long as you choose to set healthy habits.
I would hope you have been educated by this and would refrain from future posting until after your research is done.
You are a self righteous zealot who gives vegetarians and vegans a bad name and your mindless prattle has made us all dumber for hearing it. Have a nice day.

EDUCATE MYSELF! Have you heard yourself rant???
while factory farming does exist there are a number of easily researched documented companies dedicated to the humane raising and killing of livestock for human consumption.
Human beings have molars, bicuspids, canines, and incisors. those are teeth. specifically teeth of omnivores which eat both meat and plant product. Molars and bicuspids grind and chew plant matter and regardless of how you use them canines and incisors are made by nature for tearing meat.
Meat does not rot in your colon it is mixed with enzymes in the stomach and digested mainly within the first 6 to 12 inches of the jejunum ( start of the small intestine ) minor absorption of some nutrients continues throughout and bacteria essential to proper function of the gut are fed. Most food byproduct leaves the body in less than 8 hours meat left on the counter would barely begin to smell funny.
Thought I choose to eat meat I am fully aware that there are a number of health benefits from choosing to eat meat or vegetable its all about proper research and healthy habits. I also fully respect my fellow humans who choose vegan or vegetarian lifestyles. You however are a mindless self righteous zealot bound on shoving your ideals down the throat of anyone stupid enough to stop and hear you. Go educate your self before you open your mouth again and make us all dumber for hearing.

If you think they have it bad, try being the only Carnivore on my side of the family!! I was brought up as a vegetarian and from the time I was a little girl (I am 44) I craved meat I loved the smell. I would have given up dessert for a year to have meat of some form at every dinner and the funny thing is both of my parents were fat. I am now an Atkins loyal follower. I mean they don't butter the veggies or even put salt on the table, you know those delicious fluffy white rolls? Well ours were hard little whole wheat hacky sacks. The stuffing usually has slices of tofuish type turkey layered over the top of it (so the vegetarians will get their adequate protein). JUST EAT THE TURKEY AND ENJOY.
and yes the Ice cream is soy. Next year the partys at my house and we will see how they like it.

    • Posted By: asmiththematrix @ 11/20/2008 10:17:48 PM

Vegetarians are only fat because they still have animal products - dairy, fish, eggs - which is unhealthy

      • Posted By: mauigirl76 @ 11/20/2008 11:55:57 PM

Wrong and wrong again. Its sugar that makes everyone fat, not protein. When you figure out what the glycemic index is and how it works you will understand. And by the way, my Veggie parents didn't use milk , eggs or fish. Fish gives you B 12 as does other animal protein . W.hy would you need to use manmade supplements to give you the B 12 you need. Many Vegetarian don't even know they are lacking in B12 which you need for normal brain function. Look it up.
