I do think that after living in Japan that we need better public transportation in order to stop driving so much. Also we need to look at the good old fashion bicycle. I ride everywhere that i can now. If we would invest in bike roads so people did not get hit by cars that is definitly a 0 emissions vehicle. And you stay healthy.

In 2006, over 15% of global energy consumption originated from renewable sources, with the majority generated from traditional biomass such as wood-burning. Hydroelectricity is the next largest renewable source, providing 3%, then hot water heating. Modern technologies such as geothermal, wind, solar, and ocean energy together provided less than 1% of energy consumption. The theoretical potential for large scale usage is enormous, exceeding all other sources, including fossil fuels. The challenge is to make renewable energy sources a primary source of power.
The use of alternative energy sources in the U.S. is exploding due to concerns about global warming and skyrocketing fossil-fuel prices. For instance, the use of wind and solar power increased by 40% in 2007. The U.S. consumed over 600,000 barrels of ethanol a day during the summer of 2008 which is over 40% higher than in 2007. In terms of venture capital, private investment in the alternative energy sector was approximately $2.6 billion dollars in 2007.

The first step is to quit driving anywhere and everywhere. Its a pound of toxic gases every mile driven. The NOISE and stress factors have not been measured but.... the costs for Americans using these things called automobiles is in the trillions: one mile of road is a on average a million dollars. Deaths and injuries cost in hospital fees, ambulances, police, court cases, coruners. Then there is traffic paraphernalia, more police surveillance, street cleaning and air pollution costs.

Two senators from New Mexico have legislation (S.2730 & S.3233) that provide Federal loan guarantees to retrofit for energy efficiency and install renewable energy systems on our homes and businesses. Want banks to lend and builders to build, then provide loan guarantees and we, the people will buy. It worked for housing and (2730 & 3233) level the playing field so we don't end up with two or three companies owning the sun too...

It would be a great selection if Obama selects environmentalist Robert F. Kennedy, JR, as either head of the EPA or Secretary of the Interior. Kennedy cares deeply about wilflife and nature's ecosystems. Van Jones is also a commendable man in light of his green ideology.
