We need China to see that its interests are aligned with America's. If not, things could get very, very ugly.

1"And(A) if you faithfully obey the voice of the LORD your God, being careful to do all his commandments that I command you today, the LORD your God will set you(B) high above all the nations of the earth. 2And all these blessings shall come upon you and(C) overtake you, if you obey the voice of the LORD your God. 3Blessed shall you be in the city, and(D) blessed shall you be in the field. 4Blessed shall be(E) the fruit of your womb and the fruit of your ground and the fruit of your cattle, the increase of your herds and the young of your flock. 5Blessed shall be your basket and your(F) kneading bowl. 6Blessed shall you be(G) when you come in, and blessed shall you be when you go out.

7"The LORD(H) will cause your enemies who rise against you to be defeated before you. They shall come out against you one way and flee before you seven ways. 8The LORD(I) will command the blessing on you in your barns and(J) in all that you undertake.(K) And he will bless you in the land that the LORD your God is giving you. 9(L) The LORD will establish you as a people holy to himself, as he has sworn to you, if you keep the commandments of the LORD your God and walk in his ways. 10And(M) all the peoples of the earth shall see that you are(N) called by the name of the LORD, and they shall be(O) afraid of you. 11And(P) the LORD will make you abound in prosperity, in(Q) the fruit of your womb and in the fruit of your livestock and in the fruit of your ground, within the land that the LORD swore to your fathers to give you. 12The LORD will open to you his good treasury, the heavens,(R) to give the rain to your land in its season and(S) to bless all the work of your hands. And(T) you shall lend to many nations, but you shall not borrow. 13And the LORD will make you(U) the head and not the tail, and you shall only go up and not down, if you obey the commandments of the LORD your God, which I command you today, being careful to do them, 14(V) and if you do not turn aside from any of the words that I command you today, to the right hand or to the left, to go after other gods to serve them." The Lord (or whoever else it may be) also blesses nations like China, Japan and all those Scandinavians who neither believe nor seem to do His will (at least not in the literal way that many Evangelicals etc stress). Ever wonder why? American economic success comes out of greed to succeed and excel. That kinda sum it up.

I am a liberal Christian myself. But I don't believe things like America became a powerful nation because of its Christian roots. This is dishonest propaganda.

Lord blesses Japanese, Chinese, Scandinavians with peace and prosperity and yet they neither believe in Lord nor do His will, in the literal sense that people like you promote. Yet, these nations get blessed. Ever wondered about it?

You correctly said , its the only reason why US is blessed nation in the world . Not because of man's Knowledge. Its the time for Americans to look back to God and obey and acknoledge

Does anyone doubt that Obama will pick someone who can handle this job? Is this even an issue or does Fareed just always have to be Mr. International? I'm a Fareed fan, but after I read his article I felt like Newsweek just put it in to "mix it up," because there are more interesting administration positions to talk about.

Conservatives want tax cuts for small businesses and it will create jobs. OK, Let's say this happens. If no one is buying small business products how are they going to be able to hire anyone with just tax cuts? Can tax cuts alone be the answer? I believe a stimulus package plus tax cuts is the way to turn around an ailing economy. Conservatives need to stop whining about the deficit, It's already over $10 trillion thanks to your fearless leader George Bush.

A Reality to Remember: The last eight years, with the Bush-Cheney policies, have proven beyond any doubt that cutting taxes for the wealthy and/or patronizing Special Interests neither stimulates the economy nor does it create jobs. What we have experienced really indicates the exact opposite. Small businesses and all businesses simply do not thrive and hire people because their taxes are lower but rather grow because the economy is good and because people are spending money; that is simply Business 101 honesty. Then the reality is that the way to increase income for businesses and even for the wealthy is to simply insure more people have more money to spend. The ???trickle down??? theory is a fraud as our economy has always been more of a ???bubble up??? action and then stimulating it at the bottom really does benefit everyone. The rationalizing that more consideration for the top end stimulates the economy is not only false but it causes the focus to be in the wrong place and to be counter-productive for everyone. Giving more money to those who already spend all they want on whatever they want only makes the wealthy wealthier and likely stimulates campaign contributions but not the economy. That is one thing the Republican Party under GWBush???s leadership has thoroughly and clearly demonstrated and is something that should be remembered.

Why it was "good economy", despite .NET bubble and 9/11? It was not inhereted from Clinton, because there were a lot of jobs lost in few iniial Bush months.
Tax cuts is the answer! And I don't remember that it was for wealthy only. Everyone got tax break.

US is trying to move the crisis to other countries now. If the writer like, US could ask India to buy!!!

What do you mean trying? Look around the rest of the world is having economic problems, decoupling was a nice idea, but it is clear that the global economy is anything but decoupled. We don't have to export anything, yo-yo, the rest of the globe's economies follow in train.

China's power is based on a zombie workforce getting paid nothing and working 15 hour days, but slowly seeing the way the west lives and plays. They will rebell and demand change, hello unions...Why I ask cant any oth the other industrialized eastern or south american countries produde like China? I think America has more options, we can find outher poor coutnries to produce but good luck finding other bloated countries to buy.

The avaricious American and you should eat your own toxicant now. Do not bite other people in this planet. Why the world became in a chaos ? The reason is too many people like you!

How should we deal with the nation which owns our national debt?

    Very, very carefully.

    And respectfully.
    And respectfully/.

Or devaluate dollar 5 times - what debt???

  • Posted By: TRIPLED355 @ 11/26/2008 7:05:17 AM

Well to begin with the first problem is, that addressing the second problem while avoiding the root problem is not really slick ! The Chinese are actively destroying a great many Countries economy with cheap imports, I can not say that this situation is deliberate or at all there responabilty more so than any other Nation or business and they are not the only ones causing this situation to exist, But I will say , BUSINESS CAN NOT EXPORT JOBS, IMPORT JUNK, And sell it to the homeless unemployed, and the Government can not stand behind such stupidity !

China? Watch your backside America! They are now off of Cuba searching for oil along with Russia. They are also building the worlds' largest aircraft carriers and troop movement vehicles. Can't we all get along together? Just kidding. They will bury us sooner than later. Watch your backside America!

China has two ways to keep its economy growing. One way is to finance the American consumer. But another way is to finance its own citizens, who are increasingly able to consume in large enough quantities to stimulate economic growth in China. They have options, we don't. But when you compare the China's consumpton its just 5% of US Consumption of China exports .

  • Posted By: jimgreen @ 11/24/2008 1:10:04 PM

How about instead of saying, "We need China to see that its interests are aligned with America's," we try to align our interests with China's and the rest of the developing world? In the early years of slavery, we got slaves to see that they needed to behave according to our interests (be docile, not ask for freedom, work hard for our cotton crop). This was wrong. It was only when we looked to the slaves' interests, did we do the right thing as a nation.

Since we shipped our manufacturing base to China, they have gotten rich. Foreign cars come here by the thousands, while the US is denied thier markets. Instead of the workers taking the cuts, why don't the CEO's, who have thier own Lear jets, make 20-30 MILLION a year, take a pay cut? The taxpayers bailed out Wall St, wat did they do with that money? THEY KEPT IT. Bonuses, salaries for thier rich, bloated cadre...I cannot wait for the FBI INDICTMENTS to come down. They ALL need a trip to the gallows. Wat don't come out in the WASH, comes out in the RINSE. HANG'EM HIGH!!!!

  • Posted By: bighappy @ 11/22/2008 9:39:50 PM

What are you talking about. Democrats simply will print money. Extra-spending is the most stupid think to do now, but it will happen.

    • Posted By: jarcher1 @ 11/23/2008 9:11:46 AM

"There is a consensus forming that Washington needs to spend its way out of this recession, to ensure that it doesn't turn into a depression. Economists of both the left and right agree that a massive fiscal stimulus is needed and that for now, we shouldn't be worrying about deficits."

Economists of the left and right? Hmmm, thank you for inputting you economic expertise, we'll get back to you.

      • Posted By: bighappy @ 11/23/2008 5:12:50 PM

I can explain. It is not 1933 yet, only 1929. 1i 1933 economy shrunk 50% or more and FDR di dnot have choice but to invent spending programs.
Now economy is still 100%, money did not leave USA (even better - foreign banks and countries bought our toxic mortgages for full infllated price). What we need is plenty of loans to qualified people and companies. Feds finally came to their senses (lend bailout money to banks), but Obama and Democrats are going to "correct" them.

        • Posted By: muffinb @ 11/24/2008 8:16:18 AM

We have bailed out the banks and their still not lending. So that didn't seem to work either.

  • Posted By: martialguy @ 11/23/2008 4:35:28 PM

The economy team needs to look at crisis areas and addresses them head-on one-by-one.

To deal with mortgage default crisis, the government can create a system or agency that allows government to do the following without red tape:
    1) Pay off mortgage in for-closures to banks by BONDS
    2) Create a BUFFER PERIOD during which these bought-out for-closed property can either: A) be REFINANCED with fixed low interest and payment level that the current owner can manage in the long run or B) be REUSED OR RESOLD while the current owner be discharged of the current mortgage without affecting personal credit history
    3) Provide DEFAULT INSURANCE for the restructured mortgages by government's own mortgage default insurance company or agency

For near-bankrupt companies with plummeted stocks; the GOVERNMENT CAN TAKE OVER ONE-THIRD OF SHARES, allows financing for employees to own one-third; and leave one-third for the public

Building roads and promoting green energy are for long term. The more urgent need is to make industries competitive. For instance, it is not efficient for many countries to produce whole vehicles. All automakers are seeing sales plummet due to current global crisis. It is more efficient and competitive for a country to produce an automobile part that is cheapest for the required qualities; such as auto body in the USA, engine in Japan or Germany, upholstery in China. SPECIALIZATION needs to go hand-in-hand with global free-trade because it allows all to grow without impeding competitors??? growth.

    • Posted By: bighappy @ 11/23/2008 5:26:37 PM

1),2), 3), Helping poor greedy bastards will not save them, only potpone inavitable, but will prolong real-estate freeze. We have dead circle - people can not buy even foreclosed houses by rudicilously low price because they can not get mortgage (very few can pay in full), and banks can not provide mortgages because mortgages bonds in their posession are considered 0-priced, even they cost at least 50% of their original values, and to get fair price for those bonds - people have to start buying houses. Only direct loans to home buyers can restart real-estate market.
As for public works - you can not do it without proper preparation, projects, control, and qualifications. It take years to make such preparations, including plans which roads are needed, where to build new roads and briges, ecology, etc.

Saying goodbye to Globalization is a good thing! Look what free trade and globalization has gotten us, it has gotten us dependent on China to buy our debt. Zakaria is such a fool, when he wasn't talking about how great India is I heard him talking about how great free trade is. He said "Globalization is a good thing, with this economic slump we can rely on other countries to invest in us and pull us out of this mess." First off, I don't want to rely on other countries to finance us, I think its a horrible thing and it undermines our national security. Second, the only reason a country like China has all this cash is because we let them dumb products on to our market and we also let them run up huge trade deficits!

    • Posted By: bighappy @ 11/23/2008 9:08:01 PM

If somebody is able to produce good enough products and sell them to us - why not to take the gift? If USA companies can not compete because unions and lobbysts do not allow them hire foreign workers (and invest here for high-tech educatuon and jobs), implement robo0s on US plants, or because of their managers corruption and stupidity - it is our internal problems, not because of globalization. What we have now - not a result of globalization, just opposite.

  • Posted By: Tea6 @ 11/23/2008 3:13:32 PM

If we did not have such a large trade deficit with China we would not need to borrow from them.
If free trade means looking the other way at currency manipulation and unequal access, then it is not really free trade. It is protectionist merchantilism and we must get rid of it.

The biggest stimulus has already begun, lower crude oil prices. U.S. consumers will save more than $500 billion per year due to lower crude oil prices and when we account for the multiplier effect, lower crude oil prices will stimulate the economy by more that $1.4 trillion dollars (see www.jethroproject.com/tjpmultipliereffect.htm).

The root cause of the economic problem was the spike in crude oil price, which was a direct result of the Bush Administration destabilizing the Middle East by invading Iraq (see www.jethroproject.com/Energy%20Prices-Rev4.pdf).

China should not view as a bank of first resort; rather we should look internally for increase productivity and technological innovation. Moreover, we should expand trading with Latin America and Africa.

    • Posted By: jarcher1 @ 11/23/2008 9:06:17 AM

$50 a barrel crude won't last for long, enjoy it while you can. It will be trading in the $60-80 range soon enough. $147 a barrel was an aberration of speculation and sheltering money, $50 crude is an artifact of market paranoia.

    • Posted By: bighappy @ 11/22/2008 11:08:15 PM

Oil price was not the cause of realestate madness, and it will not help much now. Only stabilizing of house prices will start the recovery. People need mortgages to start buying underpriced homes, help to greedy or/and poor bastards will not do anythong.

  • Posted By: RO in Reno @ 11/23/2008 2:27:43 AM

Then I suppose we can hope China comes apart because we don't need "Globalization"
The fact is we don't actually buy Chinese goods, We buy American goods made in China and the Chinese have succeeded in turning literally every product into junk that no matter what the price it is too much.
China may be the only country with the cash to keep this country afloat but that is because they have all our cash at least the cash Bush didn't funnel to the likes of Halliburton at the rate of $350,000 per minute.
In any case it would appear the Republicans have succeeded in bringing America down,
The good news is we have a new America to look forward to, just a shame we have to start from scratch.
I guess I have become an isolationist.
