countchocula, that is sad about your husband, What is sadder is that tragedy has made you extremely bitter. This issue is not about funding for veterans, who along with their families have a legitimate claim to support in injury serving this country. It is about homeless children with no parents. It is a no-brainer that people with federally funded job get federally funded aid. But what this is really about is children with no parents. Of course it is our duty to take care of children. No taxpayer would want to begrudge them any aid! C'mon! Typically problems such as these are not from a lack of funds but a gross mismanagement of funds.

Wow, I'm sorry about your husband, but you are a bitter woman.

I am not bitter in general, if you read through the posts you would be upset in my shoes also. There are a lot of people posting that have no clue what it is like for some people who have to use government aid. I wanted to make a point, it may have been harsh, but not as harsh as some of the ones against welfare. I wanted people to think a bit about the reality of life in general. That not everyone on welfare abuses it, and I know there are people who do. That life on this income for us is not a choice we have to make. It is our life and I am content with my life. My kids aren't spoiled, and they appreciate everything they have that much more because of it.

Lynn W... I too lived in New Orleans for a number of years. Yes, poverty everywhere. But let's review this. The choice was made to stay in a place that was not allowing them to improve their situation. Is that the government's fault for not bringing in the correct jobs. Give me a break. It is each individuals own responsibility for their own life. For alot of these people, Katrina was a blessing in that it got them out of this rut of poverty, moved them to another part of the country, and opened up new doors for them. Something that would have happened if they had made the decision long ago to try something different. The comment by CRabbit about immigrants hits the nail on the head. How often do we see first and second generation immigrants that come here with nothing and then keep their head down and work like crazy to make their dreams come true. For the most part, our lives are the result of the choices that we make. God Bless.

commonsense8585-Do you understand that it takes money to move? If someone has a job that is barely paying the bills, where are they supposed to find the money to move from the city that they have probably called home, not for years, but for generations? I am a strong beliver that the welfare system needs reform; the government is not responsible for everyone's support. But, yes, they are responsible for bringing jobs into an area that pay a living wage. Without those jobs, and if people move, as you reccommend, what happens to the tax base of the city? It disappears.

Who cares; the government, the church, the media, no one cares.........and no one will do anything but steal the funds allocated to help....is this a great country or what..

I can't believe they even accepted you two's post. LA is racist. Believe it or not, there were throngs of people who attempted to walk the interstate to avoid the murder, rape, the violence. And guess what happened, the adjacent parish Jeffereson Parish Sheriff Harey Lee and posse stood across the interstate with shotguns and told these people who have no food, no water "your kind isn't wanted here" turned the people back. He was also concerned of the looting and crime in his area. You have to realize this was the wild west, police were able to shoot first and ask questions after. And "these people with five kids" who are milking the system. What the hell do you think capitalist do, with tax incentives and bailout plans. Both the rich and the poor get welfare. How is the weak to help themselves when a kid grows up in a crooked governement, corupt school system (do the research yourself), racial profiling... the odds are really against these people. As smart as you think you are, your ignorant to the type of lifesyle that some of these people are conditioned to live. "You reap what you sow" babies w/ neglecting parents, forced to fend for themselves at early ages, get in trouble with the law and repeat the same cycle. You live in hell because you came from there, you two should keep your comments to yoursevles - "it's because of you two, that everyone is now stupider."

More about formaldehyde in partical board. Its not just in FEMA travel trailors. My father had it in a newly built home (in 2002). It was their underfloor. My step mother was steam cleaning the carpet twice a month (because she is cray-zzzy) and that was more than enough to keep those boards releasing their gas of death. They had asthma symptoms, vertigo, just felt crappy all the time, felt like they were dying, and the doctors told them they were "just getting older". They moved into an older home this past year and their health has improved signficicantly (well except for my step mom is still cray-zzzy). =D

The eye of Hurricane Katrina went through Hancock County, Mississippi. It caused damage to Mississipppi, Alabama and Louisiana. Perhaps your study should cover this area as well. Our rising health issues are surely due to Katrina and need attention.

I too weep for these children. They are powerless to help themselves. However, I live in South Louisiana and the rest of the country does not have a complete understanding of what actually goes on in our state. For years now, a minority(all races), have learned to milk the system in order to sit at home while their welfare checks show up. The number of available jobs in South Louisiana is staggering. Yet, time after time, we see, hear, and read about the shortage of workers. We as a country have done this to ourselves. As long as we allow people to make a decision to live their entire life on the welfare system, we will continue to face these same issues. The problem is the parents of these children who refuse to seek to improve their lives through an honest day's work for an honests day's pay. I agree we should help these children, but I also believe we need to teach people how to EARN a paycheck instead of being GIVEN one. A helping hand when times are tough..YES...a handout for life....NO. Yes, the bible does say reap what you sow...and I believe that is exactly what is happening in this case.

commonsense8585 states: "The problem is the parents of these children who refuse to seek to improve their lives through an honest day's work for an honests day's pay. I agree we should help these children, but I also believe we need to teach people how to EARN a paycheck instead of being GIVEN one." Very good post. I agree with much of what you say. I just want to add that until entry level jobs pay more than welfare, its never going to happen. Being off work for any length of time usually sets you back to square one unless you have skills that are highly sought. The first failure is with the school system that allows so many bright minds to lose interest and drop out, setting them up for the lowest paying jobs. $7 an hour grosses $280 a week, about $238 after taxes, and about $188 after a health insurance deduction. Welfare pay far better than that and includes a medical card. This sets up a situation where many people who are bored and want to work do not because they don't have the education to spring them above the minimum wage/welfare dilemma.

  • Posted By: mom2ckr @ 11/25/2008 7:13:26 AM

I also agree with them being parasites and nothing but white trash and n*g*rs. They will continue to work the system as long as they can. How much you want to bet that now 99.999999% of the children will end up collecting disability benefits. It is never ending with people like this! Sick!! I believe they would be better off in a foster home also. This is coming from someone that grew up in foster homes!!!

WHERE DO YOU GET OFF CALLING SOMEONE THAT AWFUL WORD. DO YOU HONESTLY BELIEVE THAT YOU ARE BETTER THAN ANYONE ELSE JUST BECAUSE OF SKIN COLOR? YOUR IGNORANCE ASTOUNDS ME.

I pray to Jesus Christ who died for your sins and mine, I pray that you will never have to go through what they have been through. We can all stand back and say this and say that' but what would happen if it happen to you. Hate breeds hate. Read your bible and understand why did Jesus came to this earth to feed the hungrey and to set the captive free. Get free in Jesus to day he love's you.

Comment: Wow...."MOM2CKR" Why are you still calliing people "White Trash and Ni**ers" in the year of almost 2009? Also, "Jaciesmama" are You Atheist? God is Real! He does answer prayers and is a Miracle Worker! Have you ever heard of Faith? You should try practicing it sometime. Now that I've gotten that out of the way. I refuse to spend anymore time entertaining the senseless remarks made by the two of you. It would be pointless anyway because your remarks are a clear reflection that you both are ignorant to many things, lack education and class about yourselves. Seek Help and Seek it Fast!

Your ignorance and bigotry are pathetic. I am ashamed to be caucasian and have to admit that you are the same species as the rest of us. Children do not work the system. Their parents might, but that is not the issue. The issue is how to help these children. Where is your compassion?

humans are suppose to be a team; that is what being human is about; helping one another crabbitrun. If someone needs a helping hand lend it!! I'm not saying people should abuse the welfare system, I have even heard some people say they have earned it! The government stole from them! Their words not mine! There should be a time limit to when you can't be on welfare anymore! Because, YOU CAN earn some sort of certificate in education in 6 months, you can even get an AS degree in a year! It's about applying yourself; yeah some people don't have that motivation and feel like failures but that is because of their surroundings and no one pushing their egos up; when it has been down for so long! Yes, it is very sad for those children but if they are poor it's because, their parents are poor; hopefully, as they get older someone will help them break that cycle and make something out of their lives; because, normally, NOT ALWAYS!; their parents will not push them to succeed! Parents should be pushing them further in their education and not into working some job to support them but to get a better career by education. I'm raising my kids to be the best they can be in school; not that I want them to take care of me; because I am hoping that I will have my elementary education degree by the time I am 30; right now, I am a stay at home mother about to get married in March; so that as I get older, I will have trust funds for them; so they can live even better lives; than what they have created for themselves! Once I become a teacher the household income should be about 100,000/year; so I think that is really good from what I had grow up with! I'm just one of those fortunate ones, I dropped out of high school after finishing 11th grade, worked every summer prior but decided to work through 12th grade; to help my mentally ill mother. I got my GED in 2000; same year and month I would have graduated. I some times regret not graduating BUT I look at everything that I have endured and how I am now and the type of life I lead. I'm very patriotic, I help the homeless, I donate clothes, volunteer at Red Cross.

Sickest kids ever seen? What about the massive autism epidemic that our country is going through with little, if any, concern from the general population. Our country's rate of autism is 1 in 150. That's not a recent estimate. The most recent estimates we have are for the state of Minn. which has an average of 1 in 84, which is about 1/65 boys.
We are living through an enormous epidemic of sick children. Someone help us!

What about the other Katrina children, you know the ones that nobody talks about because people are to busy being focused on New Orleans. What about the children of the Mississippi Gulf Coast, where we were hit the hardest. Our Children are having health problems too, but has anyone checked on them. NO. Our children suffered just as much, physically, mentally and emotionally. Why won???t someone acknowledge that other places were affected by Katrina, not just New Orleans? Why doesn't someone come to our towns and talk to our children?

The children of Katrina, my heart goes out to you. I hope you get the medical care you need. I further hope you get the education you need so your children have a better chance in life than you have at this time. Money does not solve the problem in this nation. People do. Personal responsibility. If I read correctly, the children need to be 'found'. Where are they? What are their parents doing about their sick child.
The racist see this as a racist problem. This is an issue that can only be dealt with by those affected.
The help is there, seek it out and make use of it as it was meant to be used.
    Help those that help themselves.
The children must be helped, their parents must be responsible.

We live in south west LA and in 2006 we purchased a forest river which was made in 2005. Forest River is one of the two who manufactured the fema trailers. I had a friend come in and look at our new trailer and her eyes started burning instantly, she does have bad allergies though. I just never noticed it before. Never put two and two together before. In 2007 we sold our home and moved in our travel trailer for about 6 months. I never put two and two together until 6 months after we moved. My son had nose bleeds, my daughter had a cough we could never get rid of, and my husband was VERY sick. Lost weight, had a pale face, looked and acted drained, and had low white blood count. We ran all kinds of test, ultrasounds, Cat Scans, MRI's, x-rays, and lots of blood work, nothing showed anything. We moved out and things got better for the kids quick, it took a while for my husband. Later when I realized what was going on, since my brother and sister purchased a travel trailer right after us, but a different kind I went in their travel trailer and noticed theirs smelled a whole lot better than mine. I called for a formydahyde(not sure on spelling) test to be done. One company only did it. They wanted to charge me $250.00 and if we had to use it in court, the report would not be permissable in court. Forest River has not returned any of my calls and has not returned any of my letters. I love my camper. We love to camp. BUT we will never live in it again. They say air it out. Well, we had it over a year before we moved in it. During the previous summer, the air stayed on, airing it out does no good. If you go for a weekend it is okay, or even a week, but I would not stay longer than two weeks for sure. I do feel SOMEWHAT for these people because of medical, but believe me they are getting or did get a pretty good deal regarding rental. The people they moved out of the trailers has rent for up to a year or more paid for by fema. I'm the hard working person who purchased a travel trailer for fun, paying my medical bills, and travel trailer note, plus others, and I can't get help for my trailer. Once again, SCREW the middle class person. It will work out, but it does start with the manufacturing companies. This is just my opinion.

Gang, you need to get a reality check on some of these "sickest" remarks. The sickest people from Katrina are the ones that are still sitting over here in Alabama in motels getting free rent, 3 free meals a day, a clothing allowance weekly for laundry and new purchases plus a check each month. We will never get rid of them. Spread that wealth. GEEZ. How stupid can journalism get to keep dragging this dead beat issue on.
And our great Nancy Pelosi when asked, while on a visit here to Mobile, how something this stupid can be drug out so long, her brilliant reply was, "Things like this have to happen when disasters occur." And this is what is leading our government. We're all doomed.

CRabbitRun77, Let me get this right... these kids are poor so they deserve to be sick? Their parents couldn't afford to have them so they deserve it? Spoken from someone whom mommy and daddy probably still support. These people did not ride out a hurricane in a trailer park because they are stupid, they did that because they had no where else to go. And I am sure you see alot of people on welfare living better than you...please!
