I am a Katrina evacuee from New Orleans. I have chosen not to return, because I refuse to put my child back into a situation where it can happen again. I have that luxury, but not everyone does. What no one who has commented here seems to understand was that this situation was created by the failure of the Army Corps of Engineers to build a reasonably safe levee system; instead, for years, the government lied to the people of New Orleans and claimed that we were protected to a Cat 3 storm. The portion of Katrina that hit New Orleans only produced winds of Cat 1. The second factor that played into the tragedy that occurred was the poverty that so many in New Orleans were stricken with, and the lack of good paying jobs available in that wonderful city. The state and local government were so eager to bring in casino gaming, but never bothered to court businesses that actually paid a living wage. Tourism is wonderful, but the jobs that it provides do not pay well, period. I am deeply saddened to read so many of these comments, but it makes me realize all the more what a miraculous thing that President-elect Obama has achieved, given the incredible racism that this country still suffers from. We should be ashamed.

Haha you people baffle me somewhat, children are sick yes help them, and they are not in fact to blame its their parents.. just a thought if you can't afford children don't have them. Give me a break you get free family planning supplies anyway from the government and what you don't get you steal. Be realistic about it many people immigrated over tens of thousands of miles without any government help if they want to better their lives get up and do something about it. Quit whining for the weak and let them help themselves. this country is not for the weak if your weak get out people need to learn to take care of themselves and not each other all the time thats why we are weak.. humans are not a team but more a player, play the damn hand you get to your best, if you get the wrong cards you lose... play a different game because the I feel sorry for myself and the government hates me card gets old.. Our governement wastes billions on welfare and I know this when I have people I work with living off the damn government with 5 kids and they live better off then myself with none get over katrina really who gives a ... anymore. bet me if id been there with no car i would have walked out, no matter what... ride out a hurricane in a trailer park geewhizz I guess you need some school to know thats a bad idea.. I don't hate people just dumb people..that makes us weak and crybabies get real people

"so why should I help or care about the people that have never worked a day in their lives and are taking all of the governments money" as stated by laceyo....because first of all ...you know nothing ...abosolutely nothing about the actual predictaments of many of these famileies/children...it's all bad assumptions on your part. second, because it's the right thing to do to CARE about others. just b/c a few families may take advantage of a system does not mean most of these horrible situations don't deserve our help and concern. You should be extremely ashamed of yourself...go live in their shoes for a couple of years...I'd like to see you "work" out of it. These are not all lazy people you describe; tragedies like this should bring people and assistance together...just like 911 did. I shake my head at people with senseless comments like yours.

The children of Katrina are victims of the American welfare society, the primary cause of the breakdown of the nuclear family in African American culture. As a teacher, I have been working with these children since their arrival in my state. The vast majority of them come from fatherless homes and are being raised by single welfare mothers. Although government welfare created this culture of poverty, the answer is not more government. The answer is personal responsibility.

Xtreme, you actually think they'd be better off in foster care? Its such a broken system, I don't even know where to start. Siblings divided up, sometimes un loving or abusive homes, and in some cases end up disappearing into the system. Not to mention the fact that though the situation was bad pre katrina, it seems like many families were surviving. Because of the storm, though, they've been shoved into a nightmare. Is it fair to take their kids?

Those are only the cases you hear in the media. You never hear good stories because that's boring news. It's a wonder why so many Americans only use the news to make judgements.

The whole Katrina fiasco and the aftermath is a failure of our government and a national shame. The comments here are equally shameful and disgraceful. To all the hatemongers who posted hard-hearted, racist, merciless comments, please remember that you reap what you sow. One day you and your loved ones will receive a sad, frightening diagnosis from the doctor. Don't ask for prayers or mercy then. Just remember your words here aimed at CHILDREN. Remember that however you are judge others is how you will be judged by God. May God bless and keep these children and all the victims of Katrina.

rab077 you must no go outside of your little box. The rest of the world has health care far better than ours and it is for all of their citizens. When someone in your family is sick and in need of more than what their insurance will provide I'll hear you cry in a diffrent tune. People that don't seek jobs are sorry and lazy but Obama's plan is going to help us all. I pay over $500 a month for insurance right now and I get the medical procedure I need because I need to give up anoth $3000 dollars! Hopefully the new insurance plan will allow my children to grow up with a mother!

Are you serious? I have yet to see the hand of God swoop down to do ANYTHING to help these people. If you want to help get off your knees and send them some money, write your congressman, or go volunteer, but to sit on your high horse and "pray" for them, after which you go back to your comfortable life, is a cop out!

I have to write this....I agree that the people of Louisiana were and still are being treated horrible when it comes to disaster relief from the worst Hurricane that ever hit the deep South. BUT, we here in Mississippi are in the same boat. Katrina destroyed lives in more ways than one from Alabama to Texas and the world only thinks it was Louisiana, because of the media! There are very sick people here in Mississippi as well. My family and I stayed and are rebuilding in Long Beach, because this is home. It has been more than three years and our Mississippi Gulf Coast is still in shambles. Our children are sick too, and a lot of them did not live in FEMA trailers. The smell and heartache of post storm is still all around us. We have a lot of sick folks here in South Mississippi as well. I do not believe that FEMA intentionally had those trailers made to make people sick. I believe that the manufacturers are responsible for the contents of those trailers. Greed is the number one thing that is going to take our country down. It is all about who makes the most money and has the biggest toys, all at the expense of the little man. The very core of this country and what makes it tick is the little man and his family. When they are all gone, who is going to make all those things that you have to have everyday? Who will do the minimum wage jobs? Who will cook your food when you eat out? Look all around you and think about that. Remember during the holidays that you could help just one person. Think of the difference you could make if we all just helped one person. Katrina was nasty. Our government gave money to clean this up and to help the best they could....where's the money and how was it used? Why are our people so sick from Alabama Coast, Mississippi Coast, Louisiana Coast, to the Texas Coast. I think there is a lot more to it than just the FEMA trailers, that a lot of us did not live in.

I live here in S/E Louisiana & was here during Katrina......where is the responsibility of the parents? Most were welfare parasites before the hurricane & still are....The government NEEDS to make them get J-O-B-S so they can get in better housing......the tax payers keep footing the bills for these parasites & they'll keep taking it....they're teaching their children how to be just like them...lazy.
Let's see how Nobama spreads the wealth on this mess.

I completely agree with you. Though, I empathize with the children that have to go through this. They don't deserve this treatment just because they're family wants "free" living. Louisiana was NOT the only state to get hit hard by Katrina. Did people not see what happened to Mississippi and Alabama? Louisiana is just the one where the people don't want to work to get things back in working order. They want more more volenteers so they don't have to do it themselves. I volenteered when it first happened. It should of already been b ack in order if it's "residents" would help as well.

I completely agree with you. They're just riding the system. I really do feel empathy for the kids though. They shouldn't have to be put through what they're going through because they're parents just want more from the government. Louisiana was NOT the only state to get hit hard by the hurricane, but it seems to be the only one that doesn't want to recover.

Please stop the ignorance. Please go to school or read a book and learn something. Your pathetic response shows what is fundamentally wrong with so many in this great country - blaming others for your obvious shortcomings. Stop hating yourself through others!

  • Posted By: jayciesmama @ 11/25/2008 7:53:40 AM

You have got to be kidding me -- pray for them, I have yet to see the hand of God come down to do ANYTHING to help these people. If you really want to do something to help them, send money, write a congressman, or go voulenteer. But when you are done praying for them and you get up and go about your comfortable life with plenty to eat, clean air to breathe, and access to medical care, please realize that you have done absoultely nothing to help.

We as Americans have to pray and ask God to help us.

I am overwhelmed by Jole_Elon's ignorance as evidenced by his comment. We're talking about children here who deserve a decent education, basic health care and safe housing. I have to agree with vjbsmith's comment, stop hating yourself, Jole_Elon, through others.

  • Posted By: saunders1946 @ 11/25/2008 6:41:10 AM

Jole_Elon, your ignorance is overwhelming. We're talking about children who deserve to have a decent education, basic heath care and safe housing, children who have no control over their circumstances. I have to agree with vjbsmith, stop hating yourself through others.

P.S. I am so proud to live in North Carolina, a "blue state."

  • Posted By: XtremeCamper @ 11/25/2008 6:40:45 AM

I agree with Jole_Blon, these folks were living off the system and have found a way to extend their free ride. If the parents of these "Katrina kids" cant feed, house and provide the basics, CPS should place the kids in foster care.

The poor children that were not really taken care of during the Katrina Hurricane and after can blame Fema. I have just had a relative that lost his job just recently and signed up to work for Fema cleaning up in Orange, TX. Fema hires a contractor to go through an orientation and then they send them to the area to work. What is really happening is the contractor put about 8 men on a bus and sent them to Orange, TX and left them at the Flying J Truck Stop. They were to call the contractor to see what they were to do next and he never answered. These men were stuck in that God Forsaken Town...no hotel room, no place to stay so some slept in a chair at the Truck Stop. Some live close enough to just go home, my realtive came from the West Coast so was stuck there. All that we could find out was that the contractor took the money provided by FEMA and ran out on them. I have researched this and am finding there is so much FRAUD coming from FEMA. Something should be done about this organization.

Where's the bailout for these poor children?! Where was Obama during Katrina? What is his team planning for the recovery now?
