What Michelle Means to Us

This is a great opinion piece. However I saw the CNN piece first and I had to use some very serious critical thinking skill as I read the article. I really don't understand how this article got translated on CNN to society views black women as street walkers and drug addicts. I have written about the CNN coverage at :

As a result of seeing how CNN put someones words from news week on TV. I think my comment to you as a black women is you ought to speak for yourself. Some of the words you have written are very old cliches. "black women use skin whitening creams" , a cliche left over from the fifties. The opinions about skin color etc. These are interesting things and provocative things to write but when writing to a public audience we should always ask ourselves if the words we write can be scientifically proven. If CNN continues to portray black women in the manner that they did several days ago. They probably will be looking at a class action law suit. while opinion pieces are nice when they are defamatory the victims of this discourse have a right to seek damages in court. I have been damaged by the CNN coverage of me as a black women. Maybe if people would leave black people alone they could go on with their lives. However this needless sensation of black women is really horrifying.

???Sarah Palin haters???, I think people who use that phrase are missing the point. It really isn???t hatred; it is disgust, disgust with her many faults and her brazenness and surprise and disgust first with John McCain for bringing her out of obscurity and now with those who are trying to make her their next puppet to pick up where GWBush left off. There is where the real fault lies. One individual stated they didn???t think she was a sociopathic personality because she had meaningful relationships but, as McCain discovered, it is apparent she just uses relationships for her advantage. They also felt she deserved credit for having her DS baby instead of aborting yet there is the question, does she deserve credit when she constantly uses the baby as a prop, soliciting sympathy and recognition, and then just handing it off? No, those along with all of her other self-focused characteristics, especially the lack of any conscience, strongly suggest she really fits the sociopathic category and would be a real disaster in any national office (as the sociopathic GWBush has been). Personally, I think she is a sick and sad case and simply wish that she would fade away. George W Bush has proven to be the worse President this country has ever had and we need to remember all of it in order to recognize and reject anyone else who is similar ??? Sarah Palin is a cut from the same mold!

Wow, So many haters out there. Lincoln just rolled over in his grave and became a democrat. PS.....The civil war ended over 140 years ago and smarter minds prevailed.

Michelle will be ok, as long as she keep a winning, supportive attitude and someone should tell her, do not make Oprah an enemy..
Oprah was a wonderful supportive person and friend to Barack's campaign
and it should be appreciated and embraced as if they were sisters not rivals.

Second, I realize and acknowledge that his wife Michelle Obama is an attractive, intelligent, articulate, and poised woman who will be an historic and dynamic first lady. Yet, reading "What Michelle Means to Us" by Allison Samuels my first thought was, "Here we go again" .

What if Michelle Obama were lighter-skinned, Asian, or even Caucasian (as her husband's mother was)? Would the author and her friends be less smitten by Michelle? Do Obama's accomplishments matter more and justify so much conversation and printspace extolling her praises because she's "brown, real brown"? What if the opposite were true, would she be less of a "girlfriend" or "regular sister"? So, following that logic, then Mrs. Obama's skin tone makes her black enough and better at understanding & relating to other black people. Really?

This topic has been studied, reported, and debated ad nauseum & ad infinitum. The color of our skin--the hues of lightness or darkness--and the texture of our hair--"good" or "bad"--and the feature of our faces--African or European--are out of anyone's control. That issue's settled at conception and we play the hand we're dealt after birth. Why it keeps coming up in articles like these is because we black folks--or African-Americans if you prefer--keep the stereotypes alive.

Sarah is a dumbass!! it is well past time that Americans see past the rovian playbook, open their eyes,and really look around!! The 50's or anything that remotely represent that era are long gone and cannot be replaced. Grow up.. the 60's, 70's 80's and 90's are gone they happened too, but they have past. Time to stop being scared of the future and world as they exist today.

I truely hope Mrs. Obama will just be herself. I think that "Black America" may be just a little too taken with itself. A strong woman is a strong woman, I don't really care if she's purple, orange, or any other shade ( except plaid, I hate plaid!!) What a lot of black (is that CORRECT?) people don't grasp is that we as American's (as a whole) don't care what you look like IF you can lead and inspire us. The Obama's have made no excuses, no sad sob story about their past , and nothing of what they think they or their race may be owed. Instead, they were Americans with a vision and a dream that they would let no one take from them. THAT is what makes them special, above all else. The Obamas are Americans, living the American Dream, first and foremost. What black America needs to take away from this whole experience is that if you work, get your education, and make excellence your goal.... you won't be any different then any other American success story in America. But, take heed, you are no more owed here than any other race or culture that thrives here. It is who YOU are as a person, are, not race that gets you ahead and nothing else. The Obamas happen to be black... but, their impact, together is what will leave their mark on history.

This was a nice article. I just found parts of it a little to hopeful.Those parts would be where Michelle will supposedly transform people's ideals of beauty. I am skeptical. Admirable women that look like Janet Reno are not going to be on the cover of Sports Illustrated. People might have wanted to wear Barbara Bush's pearls but not her face. Hillary may be smarter, Michelle may be cooler, but Sarah will always be prettier

I really believe that the world will be better now that we have calm, cool, educated and calibrated in the white house. Hot heads like a previous commentor have lost their champions and hopefully, in time, will grow up and get on with what it means to be responsible adults who contribute positively to our society instead spewing hate, ignorance and intolerance with anything that even looks different than them.

Excellent article. My cousin who lives in Chicago and goes to the same hair dresser as Michelle. She told me how Michelle came in one day after Barack had been nominated and she was now being accompanied by the secret service. MIchelle waited her turn just as any other client would do. That spoke volumes to me. They are such real people and I truly believe they will stay that way.
