If the worth of a person were to be determined by perceived good looks, the angle of teeth or sense of personal style, we would have missed out on Mr. Lincoln and Mrs. Roosevelt, to name just two. When people talk about Mrs. Obama's teeth or the slope of her forehead, or claim her only achievement was to marry well, they are revealing themselves as unrepentant racists and sexists and worse.

Rice was the best thing that happened to Bush, but was relatively weak in terms of comparison to other Secs.

The point of the article was that for some reason, Michelle Obama is now an ambassador for Black women - As a Black woman, I'd have to disagree with the author and agree with DAN - Condi achieved her stature DUE TO HARD WORK - and NOT being MRS Barack Obama... Why wasn't SHE lauded as a role model?

Although she did not have Rice's job (who was weak in terms of comparison to others who held her positions), Mrs Obama I am sure worked extremely hard, especailly the last couple of years during this incredibly negative campaign. She put up with more sht, and sleepless nights, and nobody has a clue how much any of the first ladies have to put up with.
As far as her being black and teh First Lady, well it is sad that we are making a big deal out of it, at this time in history, but I for one am glad that we can look proudly upon them and respect them for thier accomplishments. They were not handed a golden spoon like Bush, they fought every inch to get where they are.

I am a Republican and a white, middle-aged woman. I happen to think Mrs. Obama is beautiful and I adore her sense of style. I also have come to believe that the Obama's are going to be the best thing that has happened to the Whtie House in many, many years. Go figure. I had huge doubts before the election, but after Mr. Obama won, I began to read and continue to read every article and interview I see. I have been nothing short of completely impressed with their attitudes, ideas and yes, even style. I find it really sad that I have read so many disrespectful comments that contain nothing but useless sniping. I, for one, don't want Mrs. Obama to emulate Jackie O. I have never seen anything all that great about the Kennedy's. They were all womanizers who just happened to talk a good line. The Obama's seem truly fine, upstanding people and I think they are going to bring a sense of class to the White House that is sorely needed.
