If a white woman wrote a piece like this, with "white" in places where "black" is written, it would be condemned as racist. What nonsense is it when a black writer says " And yet we're all aware of how much we have riding on her." "we" being black women. "her" being a black first lady. This emphasis on skin color is going to make the country less racist? It is the epitome of racism, and ought not to be tolerated in an enlightened society. It's so far away from MLK's "... that my four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character." A shame isn't it? We seem to be going in the opposite direction. It is those who emhasize the value of skin color that are the racists. Blind racists, but racists.

Republicans reciting MLK jr.. How pathetically phony can one get?

The so-called "conservatives" have had their chance, and they failed.

      • Posted By: Vypurr @ 11/23/2008 12:01:55 PM

As if the so-called 'Liberals' don't have their finger prints all over the mess we're in as well.

        • Posted By: Repubssuck @ 11/23/2008 12:45:46 PM

ok vypurr, I guess it's natural for you to be hurting after the November beating, but you're going to have to cope with it. It's going to get worse you know. Trying to deny the Bush 8 years of failure won't get you anywhere. Who cares what somone like you has to say? In a feww election cycles, the only thing that will still RED will be you face!

          • Posted By: Vypurr @ 11/23/2008 2:37:25 PM

Hurting? No... yet another diversion. Remember yesterday when you rewrote my post? You and Howl are masters at that.... That said, you Howl go ahead and deny that Bush and McCain took legislation to congress over a dozen times trying to avert the coming mess that we're in, along with the fact Barney Frank and Chris Dodd blocked that legislation. It won't change history.

            • Posted By: Repubssuck @ 11/23/2008 2:45:43 PM

Pathetic Whining, music to our ears. vypurr you've been defanged! You better slither off now!

              • Posted By: Vypurr @ 11/23/2008 3:13:03 PM

Defanged? LMAO! Silly, childish rhetoric... Just what I'd expect from someone with no answers.

And your user name represents you perfectly, well half perfect. We know you're not a repub! Lol!!!

        • Posted By: Doc Howl @ 11/23/2008 1:22:53 PM

Your party had congress, SCOTUS, and the white house from 2001-2006.

They had total control, and they screwed up. Deal with it.

          • Posted By: Vypurr @ 11/23/2008 2:40:11 PM

Of course they didn't have total control.... the dems took control of congress two years ago.

      • Posted By: Repubssuck @ 11/23/2008 12:04:44 PM

Actualy Doc, they've given new meanings to the word failure and nastiness. Now they're busy redefining the words, whining and denial.

Just my impression of the next First Lady, but it appears to me she has a mind of her own and no qualms about speaking her mind; she's likely to bring significant change of her own to the American landscape beyond just the image of African-American women.

    .

Let me begin by saying that I am an Hispanic male and, not only do I think Michelle is beautiful and stunning overall, but she would have made an outstanding presidential candidate herself. America got lucky again. First with the Clintons and now the Obamas, we have two intelligent, articulate, and well educated people working for us at the top tier of the White House.

Should Michelle decide to take an office in the West Wing, I hope America can get over its antiquated fifties notion of what a wife and mother should be. Strong women all across America, of all colors and stripes make tough decisions, pull their own weight and that of many others, and lead rather than follow. Just because Michelle is about to become First Lady does not mean she is checking her intellect, drive, and ambition at the door. If she decides to take a more active role than previous first ladies I, for one, will stand up and cheer.

Your post may be prophetic. in 2016 Michelle may become the next President followed by Chelsea Clinton in 2024. Women make up more than half of the Voters and that number grows each year. Women, except for those that are supressed in the South by their Republican husbands do not identify with the GOP, which is same thing as saying they don't identify with hate.

      • Posted By: Core values first @ 11/23/2008 2:51:32 PM

        Dear Repubssuck;

What do you know about any of what you write on this blog especially Repubican women in the south? I guess the media is your sole source of your comments. Stop reading and listening to the idiots your are putting your reputation on.

A lot of us have been complaining about the glitches in the postings. Often you had to reply using the regular comment block. I'm glad it's working today but I did enjoy it when one of the nasty Republican party hacks had to write REPUBSSUCK to assure the reply was correctly understood.

michelle obama does not matter, she never has, she never will. On the other hand she might, albeit as a dimly lit "beacon"...., to angry, racist (pro congoid), lying, hate filled, corrupt, pretentious, ignorant, hypocritical and anti-American "individuals".................., of which there tragically is no short supply.
The New Yoker cover got it so right!

I gotta go. Before I do I would like to thank all of the lame brained Republicans that made these next 20 plus years possible. Please never stop being yourselves. At the same time i want you Republican Wives out there to know there is still hope. The day will come soon when you can openly admit to voting Democratic in the booth, out of sight of your husbands like you did in N.C., Va., Ohio, Florida and Indiana. You've come to realize that when you became married, you didn't have to stop thinking. we love you.

I feel sorry for "Black America". MO will set them back years in the fight to to be treated fairly.
Grow Up Black America. Become Americans. Quit perpetuating the racism of which you claim to be a victim. See MO for what see is, a person who doesn't like white people, while screaming racism.

Michelle Thesis from Princeton NEVER NEVER FORGET HER WORDS she wrote this because that's what she believes.
Earlier in my college career, there was no doubt in my
mind that as a member of the Black community I was somehow
obligated to this community and would utilize all of my
present and future resources to benefit this community first
and foremost. My experiences at Princeton have made me far
more aware of my ???Blackness??? than ever before. I have found
that at Princeton no matter how liberal and open-minded some
of my White professors and classmates try to be toward me, I
sometimes feel like a visitor on campus; as if I really
don???t belong. Regardless of the circumstances underwhich I
interact with Whites at Princeton, it often seems as if, to
them, I will always be Black first and a student second
I guess this is what she is ging to bring to the world; to hate whites and the country that has given her the education she has received free. What a country, you can condemn it, the people that built it, and blame all whites on her mis-fortunes. Yeah this is how I want the NEW AMERICA to look like
    Jan C White
Viet Nam Vet and a True American that believes in Equality and equality is not promoting someone because of race nor give government grants never to have to pay back to a specific race.
I will never forget where Barrack and Michele's core values where created. Yeah Rev Wright

Michelle and Barack are classy, intelligent, educated and ready for the White House because they prepared for it. As far as Michelle having the responsibility of projecting a positive image of Black women, that is nonsense. It is a sad commentary that until now, Black women have not already done that. Michelle is not a savior or messiah for black women or the black community. We are each responsible for our own households and families. Growing up in a multiracial multi-hued family, I learned self -respect, self- sufficiency and self-love. Our role models were our parents, not the guy next door or any local or national policitician. Again, it appears that the black community is projecting their responsibility for wellness and wholeness on a celebrity. My family did not have to wait for Barack and Micelle to emerge to feel good about ourselves and to know that we are worthy of success. Take responsibility for your own ives, children and communities. As far as complexion is concerned, see and accept your own beauty and teach your children from infancy that they are beautiful now matter what society says. Lastly, this article evidences the disdain that some brown women have for their lighter-skinned sisters. Well, just get over it already! Life is really no better on the other side because lighter skin may get you closer to the table but you still have to work hard and be 110% better to be accepted because light-skinned still is not white-skinned. I would not care if Michelle was purple or green because she would still be a beautifulI first lady but, I did not vote for her. Barack is the person that I expect to fix the economy and put Americans back to work.

I hope the author realizes that everyone does the "delicate tap dance" of acclimating to a corporate culture. The racial aspect comes from lacking friends and associates in these circles, but business is business and politics is politics. It isn't the "white world".
Also, I didn't know that the cover of Vogue meant anything, other than having a good publicist. No beautiful dark skin women? How about Angela Bassett, Regina King, Cicely Tyson>? How about En Vogue? How about the rest of Destiny's Child, or gosh, Janet Jackson? Please, girl, there's plenty.

  • Posted By: artbroken @ 11/23/2008 1:01:46 PM

I hope the author realizes that whites also do the "delicate tap dance" of acclimating to the corporate world. Business is business, law is law, politics is politics. The idea that you have to acclimate to the "white world" is just as ludicrous as Eminem or JT having to acclimate to the black world.
Also, I didn't know that the cover of Vogue was the ideal of beauty. I'll grant you there's few women with dark skin held up in the mainstream - Regina King is the only one I can even think of - but at least the adult film world isn't lost about it.

Right on point Doc. You just can't come a blog these days without reading a Republican Whiney comment. We better get used to it. In 2010 things will deteriorate evn further for the GOP. I liken it to the once powerful Brittish which shrunk so bad it had to send a cruise ship to fight in their battle with the Argentinias in the Faulkland war In 2010 the Democrats will gain at least 3 more Senate seats and will cross the isle in order to move more chair to the democratics side. The republicans have already begun what they describe as the recovery process. They are moving further out of the mainstream and using the same puppeteers as before. Hannity, Limbaugh, Matalin, Morris and a few dozen whaco shock jocks from hate radio, Of course fox news will be playing a large part as always.

Today a Republican pundit opined that hillary is a bad choice because of Bill's ties to the muddle east. She stated that Bill's foundation make millions and is a conflict. When she was asked about Cheney's involvement with Haliburton which makes Billions in no-bid projects every year in the Middle East, she said she wasn't familar with Cheney's relationship with Haliburton. I would love to see how Cheney's "Blind Trust" has been doing during the Financial meltdown we're in. meanwhile Bush is on the traditional out going president trip tour, ala Ronald Reagan, picking up his deferred graft from foriegn countries he's sold us out to. Ronald Reagan made a trip to Japan at the end of his term to give a speech which netted him $1,000,000.00. Why would the japanese give that kind of money to him?

Good reading!!! with more balance than the usual fare of her dress and style, issues which are not high on the list of priorities of the majority of the people at this time as they face very pressing problems.
