The Republicons as you call them pay for the bear.

    • Posted By: jarcher1 @ 11/24/2008 9:29:16 PM

All the funnier then. Not to mention ironic with a large dose of poetic justice.

Comment: Must make you feel proud to sit back and have everything paid for by the labor of another. I know it would me!!! The republicons as you call them pay for the Bear. It was a great picture - a bear belllied up to a picnic table waiting for his sustenance = reminded me of Yogi Bear. I found it humorous but sadly, all too true!!!!
I also got to witness it first hand with the black wman at Obama's victory party jumping up and down He gonna pay my mortgage, he gonna pay my gas, he gonna pay my health care He not gonna pay nothing you and me gonna pay for it all. I think only dems should pay higher yaxes since they want them and should not get tax cuts from the GOP since they dont want them. Yeah right. If taxes were not withheld from your paychecks to repubs would pay the dems scream bloody murder and not pay.

Just another con by the people that have brought you 8 years of the lyingest administration in all of US history.

All this talk about nothing. I still want to know who started it, and if any criminal action was involved. Yes, yes...many factors were involved. Nonetheless, who pulled the trigger? What entities drove the price of oil to heights that were not only unheard of? Did they sell short to do it? Was it a deliberate attack on our financial institutions, to create instability, to increase profit? Was it driven by Wall St. trading computers? Who profited? Where did the stock shares go? Who has them now?

Why isn't anyone asking these questions???

It is useless to blame somebody for this crisis. It was caused by mostly legal activity.Blame 30-yers old regulations, which were very useful that time but led to the disaster 30 years later. Probably it was Federasl Reserve inaction, their direct responsibility is to periodically correct regulations, not to serve current administrations.

In a way it was deliberate, yes. When short sellers smell blood they blow out the CDS spreads, (widen them) and then short the stock causing the credit agencies to downgrade the credit sending the companies to their death. They certainly did not create the problem, but they did finish them off. Short sellers when done correctly are good for the market as they provide liquidty and keep companies honest. Naked shortselling is the problem along with taking away the uptick rule. Without the rule they were able to short stocks relentlesly. they need to make sure that stock holders agree to lend their stock and they need to reinstate the uptick rule. They also should have breakers in place to halt stocks when up or down a certain %. Those who profited gained very little compared to the consequnce of all those involved with the failed company.

Algorthmic trading has become a large part of daily trading volume especially triggering stop-loss orders creating much more pressure on stocks. Program orders are sent out daily without recognition of the current environment without ever being looked at by a human. In terms of crude, the trading avtivity in terms of volume would lead one to believe that short selling had a big hand in part of the price increase. Shorts can feel pain just as much as being long a financial stock. Many large commidity funds have been unwinding which has helped the amazing retracement of the price of crude just as they had a hand in the run up.

good question, but that would take thought and research where acutal facts may be discovered so they won't ask those questions. Plus, those questions might be to complex for most, espcially the media.

The latest news - Obama started govern. He called Congress to provide new stimulus package and bailout big 3. Tomorrow we probably will see Dow fall 500 because of it. Obamanomics has started.

  • Posted By: bighappy @ 11/22/2008 10:11:54 PM

The author is wrong. Obama already governs. He ordered Congress Democrats (of the current Congress, not the future one) to bailout Big 3. He announced big part of his new propgram to create millions of useless jobs, and Congress Democrats are already working on new package of laws. He selected Wall Street manager as his new Treasury Secretary, so we know big business will receive bail-out money, to the contrary what every smart economist said and current administration was finally encouraged to do (provide money to banks for loans, because it is what people and small businesses need).

    • Posted By: trimm25 @ 11/24/2008 7:49:15 PM

Obama can't order congress to do anything. Check Fox news.

"The author is wrong. Obama already governs. "

Not until January 20th, Cletus. Be patient. Soon you can whine to your heart's content.

      • Posted By: bighappy @ 11/23/2008 5:47:19 PM

Jan 20, huh? Why then the current Conress considers HIS projected laws? Why even Bush decided to leave him $400 billion of bailout money?

        • Posted By: Doc Howl @ 11/24/2008 11:21:39 AM

          January 20th.

For Chrissakes, is there ONE republican here who has read the constitution?

    • Posted By: jarcher1 @ 11/23/2008 8:01:15 AM

He ordered congressional Democrats? Git a grip man, even when he is POTUS, Obama can't order anyone in the legislative branch to do anything - even the pages can tell him to go fish. And you apparently didn't read the article, or didn't pay much attention; Geithner is a career Federal Reserve man, not somebody from the Street.

      • Posted By: bighappy @ 11/23/2008 5:40:22 PM

Of cource Obama can not formally command his Democratis Congress buddies. It is enough to announce what he expect from them and ready to sign yesterday. And "Federal Reserve" man - means exactly as I said "Wall Street beurocrat".

        • Posted By: jarcher1 @ 11/23/2008 7:32:28 PM

Ah I see, a thing is what I say it is, it can be no other way. Typical RepubliCON thinking at its zenith.

I'm with Momma K on this one. All this bickering back and forth really isn't going to accomplish anything. My challenge to the media is to take a panel of legitimate research journalist and make an indepth prediction on our next four years. The panel must take into consideration past actions and voting records of the known players of the next administration & congress to make, as objectively as possible, what our government will try to pass in the next term. (again based only on voting records and things they did, not said.) Any journalist reading this?

    • Posted By: jarcher1 @ 11/24/2008 7:33:16 PM

LOL a system for predicting what Congress will vote for? That's even more fraught with the assurance of failure than figuring out a system to you what stocks are going to do. BTW what you are proposing is called trend analysis, and it works just as long as the trend continues. You might have better predictive results with rational choice theory, but you would have to assume all choices are constant, which just won't occur.

Today I heard that Obama is already going to scrap his plan to tax the rich at a higher rate due to the economy hmmm sounds like the Bush tax cuts were a good idea to his economists too. He is going to let all the tax cuts expire in 2011 foregoing your middle class tax cut too. In addition he will now honor the agreement with Iraq and not pull out in 16 months like he promised. This is his second change on Iraq iniitially he was going to pull out right away.but then changed it to 16 months. Now it will be 37 months. A true Washington insider tell them what they want to hear repeat it enough that they believe it then do what you want to anyway. He also wants all whites to pay slavery reparations to the tune of 450K per African American over 20 to 40 years. Just what I want to do to pay a tax for something I didn't do to someone whether deserving or not (you know drug dealers and inmates) to make others who feel guilty abut something they didn't do to someone they did not know either. SIMPLY BRILLIANT!!!!

This article is one of the dumbest I have seen in a long time!!!! Like the world is on hold until the God Obama takes over!! The world survived just fine before there was an Obama and will survive long after him.
Newsweek needs to get real!!!! Obama can not solve all the problems in the world, no one could!! All the Media is doing is setting him up for a big fall!! Give Obama a chance to first become president and then try to work on problems. The Media really needs to stop acting like he is a God!!!!

    • Posted By: Horrible Bastard @ 11/24/2008 5:06:36 PM

I beg your pardon Cobalt, but please calm down. You are using up the supply of exclamation points, and someone else might wish to use one.

Good question Hirsh. Too bad you blighters are too damned partisan to answer your own question for,one of the people that is most responsibile for ''watching the money''in Congress is the Chairman of the House Ways and Means Commitee,in this case, the re-elected Charlie Rangel [D-NY].
Who is also the subject of no fewer than four separate federal probes investigating income tax evasion and corruption on his portion.[Yet to date,NEWSWEAK has not run even one story on this year-long scandal]. As to Obama, and if he is not to be seen as a one-trick pony,he had better get on top of this thing right now. Merely ''urging''the passage of a package will not get it done. He must formulate specific policies that may run counter to Franks crazy plans [ as,giving the meat of the bailout money only for mortgage protection, will keep Americans in their homes for a time, but will not clothe, feed,or employ them].

    • Posted By: marley07 @ 11/24/2008 3:55:18 PM

Frank wants that to happen to cover his ass as he is a big part of the problem we are in.

  • Posted By: marley07 @ 11/24/2008 11:12:36 AM

Wow, all of you are so quick to attack. I am saying that all Obama can do and the only thing he is good at is speaking and motivating people which I hope will lift confidence. He has never done anything else to prove he can actually execute anything other than a campaign in which he had a perfect storm to take adavantage of. My point is, most people in this country don't understand how severe this crisis is. I am saying that anyone who takes office is not going to fix this problem in one or even a second term. There are going to be businesses failing all over the country, unemployement will reach 8% if not higher, GDP is going to be negative probably through all of 09 if not into 2010 and money is going to become more and more expensive to borrow. My point is Obama is no different than any other politician only he has no experience at all. The only reason we may squeak out of having a worse depression than the 20's is because the governement is acting and throwing money all over the place. All that we are doing is creating BIG government and that in the long run is a problem in that it will limit growth, which in turn creates job loss. I was not a McCain fan either, and Bush is no saint, but Obama is flat out scary. People are thinking he can change the coutnry and the world for that matter and they are wrong. Nobody, including Obama, has yet to explain in detail how they will do anything other than restructuring the auto industry to all alternative energy which is going to be a disaster if you think it can happen as fast as he wants it to.

      • Posted By: westdude @ 11/24/2008 1:24:57 PM

Wow. In case you haven't noticed and Obama has been saying this many many times. There is only one President of the USA and he is not the President yet until Jan 20th. Stop holding Obama accountable on something that he can't really change. Put the blame where it deserves.

  • Posted By: REALITY CHECK @ 11/24/2008 12:19:47 PM

The stock market is in turmoil because Obama is still being vague on raising taxes on the "rich" and on Capital Gains. His refusal to make a clear statement on these issues is causing investors to take their gains now by selling so their taxable gains will be much lower than in 2009. These investors will (are) also transferring their capital overseas (and job creation with it - with the click of a mouse) because they're concerned that Obama's programs will weaken the dollar's value so much that they'd rather have their money in a stable currency. Who can blame them?

    • Posted By: 4carol @ 11/24/2008 1:10:06 PM

Besides, he is still the president-elect and will be for two more months!!! All you Re-cons pushing and pushing as usual; will you give the man a chance??!!!!

    • Posted By: jarcher1 @ 11/24/2008 12:48:40 PM

If you want to check reality, you need to keep up with it. Obama has said no new taxes for 2009 here:

      http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/27885917

Down toward the bottom of page one. Taxes will probably "go up" by the RepubliCON definition of raising taxes, in 2011 when the Bush tax cuts expire.

  • Posted By: vyb052856@aol.com @ 11/24/2008 11:34:26 AM

Why is it that Obama has to step up to the plate to cover Bush behind. This is only being done because he is the first Black elected President. Bush has a job to do and he should be doing it and the smart mouth media needs to lay off of him and allow him the time that all the other President's have been given.

  • Posted By: wefarrand @ 11/24/2008 11:11:49 AM

An infrastructure stimulus package based on roads and bridges continues to support our dependence on oil by building infrastructure for autos and trucks. Why not build a mass transit and railroad infrastructure. It will create jobs and begin to move this country out of its addiction. Let's not just throw money at the problem. Let's spend our way to a new future. Bailout money's already authorized should go to people rather than banks. People will pay their debts and buy things and the money will end up inthe firms and banks that are huritng. How about a trickle up economic policy?

  • Posted By: marley07 @ 11/23/2008 11:09:57 PM

I was not an Obama supporter. The one good thing he can do is give motivatiing speeches and lift spirits. He can lift confidence, (which is amazing to me if you actually listen to the substance of his speeches). My point is we need to raise confidence as that is half the battle we are facing right now. The problem is, his mechanics won't work. His vision for the country and his plan for the economy are simply just that, a vision. Executing his plan will only drive us into a deeper recession or even a deep depression. So as much as I hope he can lift confidence, I only hope he lets those who have actually had a job and worked in their lifetime make the actual decisions and let him just continue to read well written speeches. As far as the markets, they lead themselves for one and two, they look well ahead of current issues. What they are telling you right now is business and the economy are only going to get worse, more jobs will be lost and they are scared of what Obama's agenda might be.

Let me guess, , , , you believe Molasses McSame and Airhead Palin would be better suited for this very position Obama-Biden are coming into? And by the way, do you have any comments as to why Bush & Cheney are not offering up any solutions at this time. They are the current leaders right? After all, the current national crisis was allowed to develop on their shift. Is Bush-Cheney attempting a "CUT & RUN" strategy? Are they not still getting paid to lead up to January 19, 2008? Obama-Biden has no authority to execute Presidential solutions until January 20th. So why are Bush and Cheney AWOL? Inquiring minds would like to know these things?

      • Posted By: meneither123 @ 11/24/2008 9:46:11 AM

Cut and run is exaxctly what Bush and most of the present admin is doing. Cheney did it along time ago since his Iraq crp and behind the scene arm twisting was exposed. Besides that , neither of them knew crap about the economy except how to destroy it.

      • Posted By: bighappy @ 11/23/2008 11:48:27 PM

McCain would definitely be, even Juliany or Romny are much better. Sometimes Mr McSame is better suited than Mr. Chaves.

    • Posted By: meneither123 @ 11/24/2008 9:39:47 AM

Marly: If your still around.....make people feel better and that's all you think Obama can do. Isn't that Bushes job right now. Hasn't it been Bushes job during the last 8 years he has destroyed our economy, to have seen this coming (guess not he caused it) and immediately did something about it, including stopping his BS of same as McCain..."Out economy is strong". Yeah right . It's a coorrect pic that Obama as a President Elect will litereally have to step in way before his inaugaration and do something about it himeself. People Expect a flesshing out...crazy as the fine tuning I'm sure hasn't been completed at all.

  • Posted By: meneither123 @ 11/24/2008 9:43:17 AM

Walkman: It might be a good thing for us to to feel better but crazy to throw him into the lines den without his cabinet ecen complete. I am so thankful for the cabinet he has put forth so far. I don't know if he can push on except some very heavy handedness on the present Admin to get out of the way and get others on the stick. After all, those left over after Bush is gone will have to answer to him and to tell the truth I think they'll be relieved.

  • Posted By: StormAZ100 @ 11/24/2008 9:09:31 AM

So this is Obama's fault? Even though he's not president as yet, and even though he really has no authority to do anything? That's just plain nuts!

  • Posted By: walkman56 @ 11/24/2008 6:59:19 AM

The best thing that could happen for Obama right now would be for Bush and his inept cronies to resign immediately, finally facing the damage they have done to our country and its' citizens.
