A number of pretty weak comments-makes me wonder why I read this article. Unfortunately, Georgia has a poor choice. Chambliss is slow, not astute, and is a weak legislator. Martin, coincidentally Chambliss frat brother at UGA, has never accomplished anything either. He is a political "hack" of the first order and makes Obama look like Ronald Reagan . He's too liberal to suite me, especially since he doesn't have the intelligence of some of the national liberal (mostly Democratic) leaders. This was a winnable seat for the Dems if they had come up with a better candidate. Several of the Democratic Congressmen could have made a better showing but they would have had to give up relatively safe seats and I guess the reward did not justify the risk. Chambliss will still be vulnerable next time and Isaakson is only a fraction better. As weak as these two are, however, I would place them mid-pack or better in the Senate. That is a sad commentary on the national legislature.

I agree with your statement of those running. I voted Obama in the general, but could not bring myself to vote for Martin. I also wanted to state I voted for Chambliss not because Palin came here either. I am a life long republican but If the republicans keep thinking Palin is the savior of the party, I'm out. I will switch camps and start running myself in the Z. Miller mode.

Thank the dear Lord for the Republican victory in GA! This is a fine slap in the face to the empty suit Obama. Hopefully, people are waking up to the folly of the Obama election. We want him out in 2012. Onward to the 2010 mid term elections with a fine Republican showing! Let us not forget the blue dog Dems who in many cases are more conservative than Republicans. Many blue dogs Dems were elected this November. Between blue dogs Dems and Reps, the folly of Obama and his sidekick Pelosi can be sidetracked. Let us kick them both in the a**!!

The reelection of Saxby Chambliss is disgusting. He is a corrupt and ruthless politician and those who voted for him will regret their choice in the future. I agree with a fellow blogger that the Democrats could have won this race with a more dynamic candidate than Jim Martin. But I am disappointed that Democrats did not turn out in greater numbers to support Martin. No matter! The state of Georgia is not isolated from the rest of the world as many backward thinking Georgians want to believe. It is an International hub and will change in time. Enjoy your victory tonight, for it may be your last Republican coo. I just hate having to live under Republican tyranny and dictatorship and the hatred they spew against people who see the world for it possibilities.

Did the GA Republicans have to butyoutfits for Gov. Palin?

I was a a Georgia resident when Chambliss was elected. The way he did Max Cleland was shameful. However from my 10 years in Georgia I'm aware that some people wouldn't vote for a Democrat if you put a gun to their child's head.

That IS curious. From my understanding, Georgia is a fairly poor state. Why on Earth would they vote for the party of the ultra-rich?

Just because your poor doesn't mean you have no common sense. Maybe the working class in Georgia is tired of social elitist spending their hard earned money. Typical Democrat Philosophy - Take money from the working and give it to the poor, just as long those poor people don't move in next door to me. This way the silver spoon in my mouth feels less guilty

"Just because your poor doesn't mean you have no common sense."

It does if you vote republican.

"Maybe the working class in Georgia is tired of social elitist spending their hard earned money"

You mean like a useless war that costs a trillion or so, and tax cuts for CEOs?

Sorry, wrote too fast for my brain:

our current Governor is the 1st REPUBLICAN one since Reconstruction.

A large part of GA - the majority in fact - resides it the Atlanta Metro Area as defined by wikipedia - 5.3 million of the state's 9.5 million population. Atlanta Metro is by and large very suburban: of the 5.3 million, only 10% actually lives IN the city, which is usually seen as more progressive. The rural people in GA, as well as the city of Atlanta, traditionally vote Democrat (holdover, in the rural areas) from the old "FDR Democrats" - Jimmy Carter's a good example. While we have tended lately to have more republican legislative representation, our current Governor is the 1st once since Reconstruction. The overall attitude in GA is usually pretty conservative and bible-belty (mostly the Boomers) but the old holdouts and the younger, more liberal voters are beginning to make big inroads. Plus we are Boortz's home base, as we are Bob Barr's, so I can see Libertarianism on the rise here as well. I think GA is going to be a more and more interesting state to watch in upcoming elections.

Also, HB, GA is ranked 28th in the nation for Median Income. So, middle of the road - about $43K. But stuff here is pretty inexpensive compared to the rest of the country - right now gas is $1.69 near my house in the ATL suburbs. It is probably the same in rural GA where I grew up. So, with that generalization out of head, GA voters tend to vote on values. A lot of us like guns, and God, and are pretty religiously conservative. (Full disclosure - I am pretty much a Libertarian - Socially liberal, fiscally conservative, big on personal accountability and the govt staying out of both my wallet and my personal life. That said, I voted for Obama,

Saxby, sounds like an effete sugar daddy to me. Maybe he is a closeted homosexual like other Republicans Mark Foley and Larry Craig. Tell him to get his sugar with his own money and quit spending our tax dollars to subsidize the same sugar that is causing an epidemic of diabetes in this country.

In the last of the ninth inning you pick the right pitcher for the right batter to win! Georgia needs Martin to get help from Washington during hard economic times. Just common sense. No politics needed. Chambliss couldn't get a plug nickel from Obama! This recession is getting very bad very quick! Georgians will vote smart!

    • Posted By: Yuseff @ 11/25/2008 12:45:55 PM

I lived in Georgia for over 10 years. I know politics there. Georgians go the conservative route, whether thats the smart route or not. They will gladly shoot themselves in the foot if its considered the conservative thing to do.

The Democratic party should emphasize that there are only 2 names on the runoff ballot. Therefore, there should be no long lines. Voters waited, in some cases, for hours election day. Election day had many time consuming selections; not just president and senator. Fear of long lines might keep voters from crowded precincts away.

Chambliss is wicked. A disgusting human being. But, c'mon, its Georgia -- The Dems ain't gonna pull this one off, not by a long shot.

  • Posted By: Jazuhmin @ 11/24/2008 12:40:30 PM

From the "person in the street" level in the Atlanta Metro area, Chambliss is, unfortunately, winning. In the war of the commercials, Martin has not responded to the charges against him, and has only made the very weak case riding on Obama's coatails. Since Obama did not carry Georgia, that's not likely to prove very persuasive. The theory predicts that people will try to balance federal government with a split outcome. Martin's ads have to make a stronger case for him. I've already early voted for him, but fear I'll be in the minority.
