New York state taxes are 79% above the national average. That has no bearing on this story in the minds of socialist New yorkers, the fact that people slave every day to only bring home maybe half of their pay while paying over 500 dollars a months in property taxes means nothing to this readership. All the while you lament that people aren't giving to the food pantry. Why? because the Shriff of Nottingham is taking it all. But that means nothing to socialists. meanwhile, people can't get out of NY fast enough. confiscatory taxes kill economies and put people out of work. It's a trickle down thing..

I am incredulous that this story doesn't mention the taxes that are breaking the backs of new yorkers. If you're paying 50 percent in taxes from your paycheck, on top of 4 to 500 hundred dollars for property taxes alone, you have a people oppressed and without anything extra to give. The Sheriff of nottingham is taking it all.
New York states taxes are 79% above the national average. No wonder people can't get out of NY fast enough. yes, that pantry will just get emptier and emptier.

A miracle is when we don't see the natural order behind something that happens. It doesn't mean that things that something stops being a miracle when we see the "natural" cause. The big question remains why. The food pantry and the butterfly story are good illustrations of the test that there is in this life for the lucky ones. Do we stop for the broken ones? It matters to the One.

This year people, in the USA, of all faiths and races were responsible for electing Obama. This is an incredible miracle, too.

I have seen this story distributed all over the world. The Monarch will not go to Mexico, but would likely become a resident of Florida. Florida also has a population of Monarchs that winter over and head back north in the spring. A little known fact is that a permit is required to take them across state lines. For more information on permits from the USDA/APHIS: http://www.forbutterflies.org/farmingusdapermits.html

On Tuesday 11/4, I sent 15 Monarchs south via Express Mail to Virginia Beach. Their mother had laid them pretty late in the season. I took them inside so that they could finish their cycle sooner and get on their way. A permit is not required to transport within your state. In 2005/2006, Monarchs wintered over in Virginia Beach. I believe this story has come at the right time, the beginning of the Holiday Season.
I love this story and it has made my day.

Love this story ......... after a political miracle this year, this is a reminder that we are all still in the miracle-making business - yes we can :)

Rabbi Gellman - this is great. I hope many butterflies and starfish are saved as a result of your eloquent essay.

    Mr. (RabbI) Gellman,
I appreciate your story about the butterfly effect and it's positive message to everyone. In the end, little else matters if we do not take care of one another. On a similar note, our local food pantry ran out of food sooner than normal this year, due the increased need in our area, and asked for emergency donations. Our church group gathered 65 grocery sacks and 4 cardboard boxes of food from the good people in our neighborhood. While only a small drop in a very large bucket, each contribution increased the faith and enlarged the soul of the giver, as well as feeding a person in need. May we all find ways to do the same this holiday season and in the year to come.
