It took a lot of guts to use force during these times as the rest of the world looks on. He did what he had too, to win the situation with very minimal collateral damage. Hopefully he will be as courageous and as prudent with our existing economic issues. I hope he succeeds, because that would mean our country would succeed!

I personally think it is great that Captain Phillips found his way out of a near impossible situation as well as our government. Both the Navy and the Captain should be commended for a job will done. Unfortunately I think from reading comments made that very few look at the overall situation in a perspective of history with action and reaction.

The issue in Somalia has been made from past abuse by the world itself in flagrantly destroying the coastal area by over fishing uncontrolled pollution. With the lack of a central government and no voice in the world affairs the Somalian Pirates are now looked upon by their own people as heroes who are striking back at those that have decreased their meager standard of living. If that particular area had been treated with respect from the Japanese and other countries who have out fished the locals and the dumping of pollutants restrained themselves from that greed and uncaring abuse for the environment, the current situation most likely would not exist.

Where there is strife there are injustices. Just too simply send in the marines just take them out. will not solve the issue but make it worse. Again another recruitment area for extremist who look for this kind environment of hate created by the free world out of lack of compassion and understanding.

If we are going negotiate we need to really have a plan for all our ships moving through this area. We have to end this now. It's been going on for years. Now that one of our own is on national stage we have to take care of this. Either it will end peacefully this time or we have to show our military might. All the other nations must agree on a national policy about these pirates. God protect the captain & I hope this ends peacefully or with our fist in their face!

Hollywood has glorified the act of piracy as some type of noble service to the common hard scrable man trying to scratch out a living on this planet, but realty is what we are seeing happening now off the coast of Africa. We are dealing with hard core economically depraved peoples who have found a way to steal and hold for ransom their booty in this ancient form of criminal piracy on the seas. The fact that Somalia is an ungoverned state is irrelavent in that even the governed states in Africa are unruly and have no real control of their populations, so this fact should be thrown out. Our liberal progressives feel that installing some sort of central government would miraculously stop this overnite are just plain fantasy and daydreaming. The only way to stop this piracy on the seas will be for special forces from various first world countries to organize under some policing combine and do what they are best at doing, root the pirates out, imprision them or execute them. Only then will it change and send the message that piracy doesn't pay. Right now the shipping companies are willing to pay incredable sums of ransom and the pirates are more than willing to continue in thier criminal pursuits because of it. It's only about the money, until that stops, neither the criminal hostage taking nor the piracy of booty will cease.

There was a time, a few years back, when I thought that terrorists ought to be treated like pirates. Little did I know that pirates are treated with the same complacent stupidity as terrorists have been, for instance in Afghanistan where they were allowed to escape even as surrogates were "captured".
Bravo to our fearless leaders running at the mouth. Next there is going to be a war on pirates, only be warned: It's going to take time, Somalia is fragile, democracy needs to take hold. Yeak.

Pirates are the offal of the sea. The only way we're going to stop piracy in that area is to follow the pirates back to where they hide and destroy their on-land facilities. A few dozen 1 ton bombs, a little napalm, torpedoes for the pirate boats, and perhaps a serving of cruise missiles add some flair (or flare) to any pirate stronghold.
