One thing Reagan gave the country was the insight that Bush would do exactly as he has, One has to be a fool or too young to remember exactly what Reagan gave the US the S&L crisis and billions of dolars in bail out, 68 billion went to Neil Bush's Silverado Savings and Loan. I had no doubt Bush would do a rerun, it worked before and it has worked again. This country doesn't need any more of that it may not even survive a third go around.

Obama will set the pole mcuh higher than any President before him, Amnerican will never be the same after Obama, Although Bush has in effect made it easier in the sense when you are at the bottom there is only one way to go and that is up.
But please lets not even hope Obama is anything like Reagan; The difference and advantage Reagan had over Bush was he could actually make a memorable speech thanks to his hollywood speech writers and the fact he could read. otherwise nada.

Reagan and HItler were both great communicators. Let us hope Obama is more, let us hope he is the next FDR.

    • Posted By: gary4205 @ 11/29/2008 3:12:09 PM

I sure hope not! FDR caused the Great Depression to drag on for nearly 10 years because of his idiotic ideas! Some still haunt us today. FDR was a joke.

If McCain/Palin could get in a time machine, I'm sure they would have left an ecological paradise by now. A few bands of hunter-gathers would roam the now restored virgin wilderness. By now most of the signs of a former civilisation would have decayed and fallen under the verdant landscape. You righties should go into comedy. Goldwater was a joke, Reagan was a joke, Bush-Cheney was joke, and McCain-Palin was a joke. Only problem is the jokes stop being funny when they actually get elected.

I got the sense you were channeling on one of Sarah's raptures then. But the problem with it, and why she wouldn't really like it is because there won't be any cameras then...

is this for real? This has to be a joke. This just proves to me that journalism is really dead!

    • Posted By: jarcher1 @ 11/29/2008 2:07:00 PM

Oh, its for real alright. Where I would fault Eleanor is in her using Reagan as a paragon of virtue.

  • Posted By: WestSeattle @ 11/29/2008 1:43:09 PM

Nice try Eleanor! Even you must recognize that Reagan taught and stuck by certain personal principles (less government, lower taxes, communism is evil) and held to them them through thick and thin until he eventually achieved his successes. Obama is a calculating populist (somewhat like the Clintons). He will watch the political winds and will flip flop to say anything that he deems convenient (and already has).

Old Dutch was at best a B actor whose core principals had little to do with the economy in the 80's, and much more to do with flim-flaming the public. As for the prosperity at the end of the decade, for certain regions of the country, it had more to do with the collapse of oil prices than anything else. It certainly never had the effect the trickle down people wanted to accord it. David Stockman's 1986 book "The Triumph of Politics" is a palliative to anybody still suffering after effects from the hallucinatory supply side theory. After 1986 Reaganomics was essentially dead, having been justly killed in the 1986 Budget Reconciliation Act.

The left wing media still doesn't get it.

Obama won because a group of Americans voted almost unanimously voted skin color as opposed to experience.

    • Posted By: jarcher1 @ 11/29/2008 1:42:41 PM

So Walther, I take it you wanted to put John McCain's economic plan to work. You know the one that did a bit of that and a bit of this and the next day had changed all over again. The one from the guy who said "The fundamentals are sound" and "I just don't understand economics very well" and "Maybe I'll pick a VP to help me out with economics." That plan.

McCain and Palin couldn't sell their platform because even they realized that they had no substantive policies to present which differed significantly from those of the Bush years.

So instead they relied on instilling fear and hatred of somebody who is "different", a philosophy that is consistent with the history of the extreme right of the GOP. They were all about morality, but cared nothing about ethics.

The GOP lost because the American public rapidly became turned off by the McCain campaign's continual character attacks on Obama. First he was labeled a "celebrity", then an "elitist", and finally a "socialist", a "terrorist sympathizer" and "unpatriotic". McCain also lost because, once the luster wore off, the public realized that Palin was woefully unqualified for the office of Vice President, and her selection spoke volumes about the executive judgement of McCain.

The McCain camp claimed that their motivation behind attacking Obama had been to question his character, integrity, judgement, and leadership potential.

Well, if you examine the conduct of both candidates during the campaign, there is no question about who has shown and still shows the character, integrity, judgement, and leadership potential necessary to restore our nation's standing in the world, resurrect our economic vitality, fix the broken health care system, and motivate industry to shift from fossil fuel to non-polluting, renewable energy technologies.

It took Bush and Cheney eight long, arduous years to cause severe damage to our nation's reputation abroad and economic stability at home. I'll be eternally grateful if Obama and the Democratic Congress can repair most of the damage during the next four years.

Oh, they get it, they just won't admit it.

You cannot be serious, Barrack Obama is producing gains in the stock market with his calm and orderly transition. Never let the facts get in the way of your delusions, what has caused the sustained gains in the stock market is the ever falling price of oil, not Barrack Obama's smiling face. Someday you left wing liberals will learn the government is not the source of wealth but the plunderer of it. Barrack Obama is going to create more entitlement programs and tax to death anyone with the audacity to want to work hard and keep the fruits of their labor. He will spread the wealth by making poverty universal so we all can be wards of the State. The sad part is there is no place left to escape your socialist nightmare. And finally Barrack Obama is not a pimple on the behind of Ronald Reagen. Soon you will see his promise of change be realized, he will change it from bad to worse.

    • Posted By: jarcher1 @ 11/29/2008 1:34:16 PM

Speaking of delusions - you got a pretty good set yourself.

Yeah we want Obama to continue the supply side economics that Reagan created- that have not worked through
5 presidential terms. Yeah we want Obama to enter into subversive covert wars: Iran - Conta. Yeah we want more American people to end up being homeless and wadering the streets of our nation more so than any other time in history other than the great depression! Yean we want Obama to win a so called cold war with the Soviet Union while by outspending them with billions of dollars into the military culture only to see that this so called victory last a paltry 20 some odd years- the new Russia is as politically perverse as the old Russia! What cold war victory are the American conservatives clamering about! Yeah we
Obama to mirror Regans denial of the energy crisis only to play ball with the monolplistic American energy culture! If Regan is as good as the conservatives have to offer no wonder our nation is in the bind in faces- deregulation, no oversight, free markets yeah- let the financial wolves run wild. Its disgusting!

    • Posted By: jarcher1 @ 11/29/2008 1:11:52 PM

Ah the great Reagan cold war trick. Reagan got a lot of credit for that one he was undeserving of. I'm not talking about the usual "on the shoulders of giants" retort here, but a couple of things that are generally under the radar. First the USSR was on its last legs anyway, the CIA was forecasting a major political/economic dislocation, merely based on the metrics of the Soviet economy. Reagan knew that, hence his speechifying about spending the Soviets into poverty. Secondly, and most pointedly related to the first point, the Soviets never increased their military spending as a response to the Reagan build up. Military spending remained the same as set during the previous 5 year plan. But the Reagan idolaters kept shrilly shouting their version and getting journalists to spill ink parroting their point of view until now the common wisdom is that Reagan brought about the end of the cold war. Can we say "cheap legacy" boys and girls?

WHO GIVES A CRAP ABOUT REPUBLICAN LUNATICS IN REALITY??? Hummm..wonder who started this 'trickle-down' disaster...humm....RONNIE RAYGUN!

As long as the public (which is the republican plan) continue to talk about Raygun then he becomes the standard. If that's the 'standard' then we're already done.

???Sarah Palin haters???, I think people who use that phrase are missing the point. It really isn???t hatred; it is disgust, disgust with her many faults and her brazenness and surprise and disgust first with John McCain for bringing her out of obscurity and now with those who are trying to make her their next puppet to pick up where GWBush left off. There is where the real fault lies. One individual stated they didn???t think she was a sociopathic personality because she had meaningful relationships but, as McCain discovered, it is apparent she just uses relationships for her advantage. They also felt she deserved credit for having her DS baby instead of aborting yet there is the question, does she deserve credit when she constantly uses the baby as a prop, soliciting sympathy and recognition, and then just handing it off? No, those along with all of her other self-focused characteristics, especially the lack of any conscience, strongly suggest she really fits the sociopathic category and would be a real disaster in any national office (as the sociopathic GWBush has been). Personally, I think she is a sick and sad case and simply wish that she would fade away. George W Bush has proven to be the worse President this country has ever had and we need to remember all of it in order to recognize and reject anyone else who is similar ??? Sarah Palin is a cut from the same mold!

Eleanor, you make an excellent point here. I think that we ccould go deeper yet. Besides communications and inspiration and intellect, Obama is a keen strategist. He is not taking it for granted that he has political capital as Bush-43 did. He appears to believe that it is necessary to earn the respect and good will of the people every day. He appears to truly want to be an effective president with an effective Governement. Imagine a president that actually works with everyone in Washington to get things done all while communicating to allies and enemies alike what he intends to do. How about a leader that will offer the olive branch to his enemies with the goal of using their knowledge and experiences to make a difference for us the American people. I for one will take a hopeful tone for this.

  • Posted By: Cates @ 11/29/2008 10:47:50 AM

Let us all hope that Obama is NOT another Reagan. We certainly don???t need another intellectually challenged war criminal in the White House.

This woman is is liveing on another plant , the only thing Obama is doing is picking staff . This is like a long train Bush drives the engine and Obama sits in the caboos watching everything go by ,the only thing Obama can do is watch and hold press conferances to try and stay relavant to what is going on in the world powerless to do anthing. But the medea are giving him credit for every little burp they can .

  • Posted By: DoRight @ 11/29/2008 3:57:29 AM

Dear rjharen, who are you speaking to, and on what basis are you making any or all of your claims? Anything specific that Obama has said or done, which might suggest such radical socialism? Has anybody taken into account (or even been aware of) what Obama taught as a professor in Chicago -- constitutional law? I think he knows -- and fully supports -- what is best in our form of government and worth protecting, far more than his more unstudied and improvisational predecessors. You are only scaring yourself.

  • Posted By: DoRight @ 11/29/2008 1:35:58 AM

My own hope is that Obama will prove to be the first Obama. I tire of further attempts to rehabilitate and mythologize Reagan by nostalgic hindsight; so much of what he did was built on falsehoods key to the conservative ideology, and he did a good deal of harm thereby. He is/was a very different person from Obama, with his own list of virtues and faults. Let's let Obama establish who he is on his own terms, and save the comparisons for later!

  • Posted By: taftodd @ 11/28/2008 6:23:51 PM

Let me echo Gary4205 but make it realistic:
Are you deranged Eleanor? Obama as the next Ronald Reagan? Ronald Reagan was an idiot. Obama is real.
Reagan was an "actor". That's what made him look good. That and his loving wife directing his behavior. Barak Obama, despite all the hardships life handed him, has succeeded at everything he has done, and succeeded admirably. He'll succeed at the presidency too.
And if Sarah Palin is the next Ronald Reagan, God help us. There is nothing about Sarah Palin that is admirable. She needs to be forgotten and left to do her stuff in Alaska.

    • Posted By: gary4205 @ 11/29/2008 12:08:12 AM

      You must be kidding!
Ronald Reagan was our greatest President. And calling him an actor would be like calling Sarah Palin a mayor! Ronald Reagan was GOVERNOR of California!Governor Palin has more credentials than anyone who ran in this race. Do some research Obots! Governor Palin is the real thing.

      California!
