emmarcee is true. When I grew at my young age, my family was not rich. This is true to millions of Indians. Indian govt didn't give any special privilege for my family. Like every family in India we fought through hard steps and climbed to a good level in education and earnings. In India there is no descrimination in education or job in work place based on religion. Rather there are lot of minority owned education institiutions. This are sanctioned by politicians for vote bank politics.

    The real issues are:

    1. There is no birth control among most of the Indian muslims.Atleast among the poor.
    2. Illegal immigrants about 6 millions muslims from Bangladesh live in mumbai.
    3. Lack of uniform civil code in India
    4. Social security card system
    5. There are thousands of madrasas across India which teaches religious education rather professional education required to grow to an stature in society.
    6. Let the muslim leaders/Imams pass a verdict in all mosques that every one in their community to educate rather spreading hatred among various religions -I condemn RSS/BJP also on same note.
    7. Muslims where ever they live should have bond to mother land rather attached to religions first.

I know serveral educated muslims who are very good in society and reached great heights.

    Commendably put!
India needs to fight this terror mercilessly, but MUST address the alienation of India's poor Muslims. Otherwise we will keep fighting terrorism until the cows come home.
I'm less optimistic about Pakistan's leaders cooperating with India. It remains in their interest (to remain in political power) to declaim responsibility for any insurgency or terrorism in India -- when the complicity of ISI has become abundantly clear. Zardari has been making friendly overtures lately, but even if he wants the ISI to stay out of India's business, he may not be able to defang an organization steeped in messing with India.

what do you mean? alienation? what they need free gifts now like they give to inner city dem vote banks now? They are getting all the freedom they want in India and actually that is probably the mistake.

A great article! The author is right on! Thanks, Sameer, for saying out the hard truth.

What has happened in Mumbai is a great tragedy for all Indians - Indians of all faiths. At a time like this when divisive politicians sow more seeds of future tragedies, those who truly love India should acknowledge the truth behind this article and work for peace, equality and justice and ending all violence.

Pfeh - 'loveindia' sounds like a nut from the left-wing fringe.

You write "one can easily imagine how dangerous this kind of speculation might prove on India's streets, where Muslims and Indians often live side by side." Muslims and Indians? I can't believe Newsweek let you post this. I expected better from them. Would you ever mention 'Americans and African Americans live side by side' in an article?

Gentleman, Sameer Reddy is a NRI who has taken up a job with Neweek. Without being on the ground he is able to judge the situation from miles away.
See what level a journalist can stoop just to make Neweek sell copies abroad so that he can keep his job in this downturn.

Gentlemen, Sammer Reddy is an NRI who has forsaken his motherland and just to make his next salary from Neweek write dirty articles so that they will help Newweek to sell copies in this downturn.

What does he know the reality on the ground if he lives in "The States"

People will stoop to any level save their jobs in this economic downturn.

"..one can easily imagine how dangerous this kind of speculation might prove on India's streets, where -Muslims and Indians- often live side by side." Can someone please explain why the author has distinguished between Muslims and Indians? Such divisive statements were not at all expected from a reputed and credible magazine like yours and I hope the corrections will be made soon.

It is sad and downright insulting that a person of Indian origin writes such a downright misleading article and legitimizes terrorism. There is never any justification for terrorism- no "underlying cause" can ever be so great that allows innocent men, women and children to be mercilessly butchered. Does the poverty of South Central LA justify the rioting? Does the social inequity between the inhabitants of the poor suburbs surrounding Paris and its city center justify the arson and violence? Does the lack of opportunities within Palestine lands justify bombing Jerusalem? This tragic incident needs to be seen for what it is- a grotesque manifestation of terrorism without borders.

The author wants to talk about Muslims in India? Great- let him start from A.P.J. Kalam, the ex-President of India and a man more respected than any current politician in India. But really, this claim of "two Indias" is utterly false. Whether its a CEO of one of India's largest IT companies to movie stars to its famous cricketers, India has always provided strong role models and opportunities for Muslims and other minorities to advance.

It is very sad to see that some Indian can write such a "wrong' article about India, giving such a wrong image about the country. If we look at so called muslim backwardness, it is them who are responsible for all this. They don't send their girls to college what can the government do??? And the "fact" that I want to tell Sameer is that there are 150 moderate muslims in India they are much different then other muslims of the world. Reason, being they have been living with Hindus since ages and their is a strong mutual trust among hindus and muslims at a ground level. If some 20-40 odd muslims get hired by ISI and act against state doesn't imply whole muslim community is same. Don't try to DIVIDE india , Mr. Sameer. Also, there are elements at the political level in India which want to play the theory of Divide and Rule. They conspire the communal violence, terrorist violence so that Hindus and Muslims can fight among themselves. Then they try too woo muslim voters asking for votes to improve their backwardness, but they don't do anything. Simply, because they are the biggest cheaters. Their conspiracies have failed till now and
will fill. India will remain united and stop writing such bogus articles.

India is definitely a country with a wide economic disparity but there are far more have-nots who are not muslims who havent turned to violence. These are poor farmers from the hindi belt of the North. Ironically, many of them move to the Dharavi slums in Mumbai and start from the scratch. They are targeted for being outsiders. Never once have they retaliated with such attacks. Seriously Sameer..stop giving the greasy wheel the grease.

Hi, I think your article is not based on facts and ground realities. It is irresponsible on your part to publish such articles and fan hatred and violence. It is a well-known fact that Indian muslims are happier and enjoy a better life and social status than their neighbors in Pakistan. And excuse me... what do you mean when you say "India's streets, where Muslims and Indians often live side by side"... For god's sake please remove these words. Muslims in India are also Indians. We treat all Indians as our brethren. The utter false information and instigating miscommunication of this sort is no better than the fiery speeches which the AlQaeda or the Lashkar-e-Taiba use to brainwash Muslim youth. Are you their agent or what?
