Oh my, sounds like we may have the beginning of our own version of the French Revolution. Liberté, égalité, fraternité

It's not luxury shame, it's luxury fear--fear that the masses will notice them in a different way than they have for way too long. Notice them for what they are: pigs, who, if there is a hell, will some day take up residence there, and it won't be the penthouse.

To call it luxury shame attributes to such people something they lack--a conscience. And they--the rich and the ultra filty rich--they are the cause of this economic mess we are in. And a Great Depression now--after 3 generations of pavlovian consumers have been trained to love their baubbles so well they'll trample your very life into the cold, hard floor at walmart--well, better watch your back all you big spenders!

    oh boo hoo.

rather than hide the ugly crap they've purchased...why not sell it. and help pay off the national debt they helped to create...or, HELL, maybe they could pretend they were actually human beings and maybe feed the tens of thousands of american children who will go to bed hungry tonight.

This isn't good. The rich cutting back on luxuries means what? Lost jobs. Someone has to make those luxury items, and this cutting back isn't helping a thing.

Just for argument, what is the difference between a 5 million dollar yacht and 5 million dollars of stock in GM? Assuming that the yacht is never used, there is very little difference. Paper. Doodads. Googaws.

I wish that there were not a market for this frippery, because the labor and advertising and resources spent for all of it really amounts to very little. This is my big problem with TRICKLE DOWN and CONSPICUOUS CONSUMPTION. If you put it together, it equals Italy at best and Nigeria at worst. America has a lot of other better things to do than import designer bags.

It is speculation and wasteful spending on junk, as far as I am concerned. Funding environmental efforts, building mass transit, and changing out energy wasting lightbulbs, and just picking up the trash in streets and waterways would create more jobs and improve our lives much more.

I think what's most disgusting is that everyone, to include Congress, is shaming people for living in a manner that takes advantage of something this country was based upon, capitalism. They worked/acted/managed/led their way to that much money, why the hell should they be "jacked ... for no particular reason" or feel ashamed? I may be part of the struggling masses, but I'm not serving a socialist/communist/etc country where the money I/they make is a bad thing and they should give it back just because they have so much of it. Come on.

    • Posted By: McLovinB @ 12/02/2008 9:35:57 PM

You realize you are paying a dear price for that opinion, right?

It would not be so bad for rich people to waste money if poor people's taxes were not paying for it.
It would still be bad, but you know... not AS bad.

  • Posted By: nypeach @ 12/02/2008 7:21:34 AM

boo hoo, listen to all the haters. please. if you worked hard and earned billions, or invented something or finally hit the lottery (you know you play every week, praying for all five numbers and the power ball), you wouldn't have a problem with conspicuous consumption. You guys are all complaining because it isn't YOU sitting back enjoying all the loot. Yes, some of the rich don't deserve to be rich, but most of those people worked their butts off for their money. Isn't that the American dream--work hard and you can acheive anything? Don't hate the rich for being rich; take a look at yourself and figure out how to pull youself out of the hole.

    • Posted By: McLovinB @ 12/02/2008 8:59:11 PM

I have been very successful in my life and despise CONSPICUOUS CONSUMPTION.
Enjoying the loot reveals a lot about people, and it is all very negative. It shows sloth because you rely on pretenses and junk to fill your liesure time. It reveals greed because such people amass without a thought to need. It probably comes to a few more deadly sins, but there you are.
But deep down, it reveals insecurity. As defined, CONSPICOUS CONSUMPTION is for show, not for utility. In other words, if you use it without telling or showing anyone, that is not conspicuous consumption. Having something just to tell someone about it is disgusting because it is waste.

Your argument SHOULD be that CONSPICUOUS CONSUMERS need more than anyone else. It is more of a mental illness than anything else.

I do not have that illness. I live a modest lifestyle and discipline myself to avoid junk and frivolity. I then concentrate on helping others meet their modest needs. People with uncontrolled needs can never be helped. People with modest needs can be helped by the hundreds with very little effort.
Having a sense of responsibility and consideration is something every person should have. It is more important than being rich.

This is why the redistribution of wealth, Obama's master plan, has never and will never work. The rich simply lay-off, raise prices, etc., to pass the cost to the "little-guy." That's why the country needs to focus on getting government out of the American Dream. That dream never included government's help.

Socialism has NEVER worked. Wake up. The rich are not the enemy. They are the ones creating jobs, spending and giving to charity. The productive should not be supporting the parasites.

      • Posted By: Doc Howl @ 12/02/2008 12:55:53 PM

        "Socialism has NEVER worked."

Has anyone told the Canadians? They've been socialist since 1867.

        • Posted By: McLovinB @ 12/02/2008 8:46:51 PM

          I like your style Doc.
I think that people need to be told that looking out for the other guy is as socialist as Jimmy Stewart. You know, Jimmy and Henry Fonda used to come to blows because Henry Fonda was such a LIBERAL. Jimmy actually hit him. I wish as many people would watch THE GRAPES OF WRATH as watch ITS A WONDERFUL LIFE. America would be better for it.
You are fighting the good fight, Doc. Universal health care, better child care and education, a little less charity and a lot more dignity and citizenship. It is time for people to realize that paying taxes is not the same as being a sucker.
I do not know where this guy gets off calling hardworking honest people "parasites". I know the feeling and I know that it is wrong. Americans might come to learn that the disease that basically started with Reagan has to be stopped once and for all. I really hope that Americans can eventually have some of the good things that people have in other countries such as France, Canada and Japan.
          Keep posting Doc.

The reason the Rich should feel shame is because with wealth comes the responsibility of taking care of those that are poor - make NO mistake about it. You dont need or deserve a big screen TV when someone cannot afford their medication or heating bill. It involves more than just volunteering time, everyone gets 24 hours a day, not everyone gets 30,000 a year. You have to give a substantial and majority of your money and wealth away. The Rich are not free from judgement and thats why they feel shame.

    • Posted By: McLovinB @ 12/02/2008 8:36:38 PM

But in good times, did you ever give them the consideration that you now ask from them? If this is a two way street, then what did you ever do for them?
If America is a society where only the strong survive, then why do people have the right to complain if they can't cut the mustard. Maybe less fortunate people should just accept their station in life, as the British underclass have.
And the rich are already taxed more, they already have to spend more for security and lawyers to keep people from taking what they have. Hmm. I wonder if someone is going to change the rules in the middle of the game. After all, baby boomers matured watching reruns of Dallas and Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous, and gameshows. The rules in America told people that the strong will survive. Now people want everyone to survive. That is a pretty big difference. I wonder how that will work out. hmmmm.

Who cares about the rich when Newsweek can't even hire a good proofreader--it's MASERATI, not "Masarati." Good lord. Someone got paid to write this drivel?

    • Posted By: McLovinB @ 12/02/2008 8:14:51 PM

Many proofreading jobs have been outsourced to India in the last few years.

bunchfam, the rich are not buying hamburger they buy top grade angus filets. Rich people spend more on lunch than you do a for a weeks worth, maybe two of groceries. Spending is not a privlege but a necessity for a strong economy. purchasing goods and services creates jobs. Jobs spread the wealth when people of all incomes have a little more to spend. Note I did not say lend. I worry that credit may be in trouble for years, but when the qualifiers for credit went out the window, so did the economy.

I had a house guest from Silicon Valley about 6 months ago. He said his food bill was a rounding error. Moreover, I can assure you he was not eating beans and rice.

  • Posted By: bllyness @ 12/02/2008 12:26:53 PM

Doesn't anybody remember Rome or the French Revolution? Shame is the least of the emotions that those who have huge amounts of unneccessary wealth should feel? If the economy doesn't find a way to become more balanced on the whole... I am from a small town, and we learn young, that you can't beat a dog everyday, and expect it NOT to bite you tomorrow.

    • Posted By: McLovinB @ 12/02/2008 8:11:00 PM

      Truly spoken.
There are worse things than paying taxes. One is getting strung up.
I really wish that "rich people" had chosen to pay about 5% more in taxes for the last decade or so
They will probably really wish that too.

The truly wealthy always live below their means and are often quite generous in their giving. Excessive opulance is usually done for show and is often the result of insecurity. It doesn't impress others as much as it impresses one's self. Remember, Waren Buffett lives in the house he purchased 40 years ago for $40,000, and Sam Walton used to drive around in a used pickup. They felt no need to be showy and spend extravigantly. remember: "A fool and his money are soon parted."
One correction, though. What the wealthy are feeling is guilt - an inner feeling. Shame is thrust upon people by others. The auto CEOs were shamed by congress for taking private jets to DC. Feeling guilty may be the result, but they obviously didn't feel guilty before being shamed. That's how out of touch they were with reality.

    • Posted By: Spirit of Truth @ 12/02/2008 2:42:18 PM

Warren Buffet and the late Sam Walton are just greedy. Just because they hoard money and don't spend doesn't make them saints. Living with little like they do and giving money to those who are suffering without would. Let us not forget that Buffets secretary earns around $36k, and Walmart workers are some of the most mistreated and underpaid out of all the big corporations.

      • Posted By: McLovinB @ 12/02/2008 8:05:42 PM

I cannot speak for Sam Walton at all.
I do know that Warren Buffett is extremely admirable. He has become extremely wealthy using common sense and tremendous self-discipline. He is definitely not the smartest man in the world, but he knows who he is and has realy courage. He has truly controlled his desires and I believe he does not feel greed in any way. He uses all of the wealth that he has gained and protects it. He provides people honest and legitimate jobs doing necessary work. That is so much better than charity. The man hates waste and lives his entire life making sure that there is a future for reason in America.
If he had been president, America would be in a lot better shape than it is in today.
If he had headed any auto company, they would need no federal help today.
Probably if he were the head of Wal mart, relations with workers and communities would be better.
I am very sure that the only way that this recession has changed his life is that he has become much more needed. Other than that, he probably drinks one more cup of coffee a day.
If all millionaires were like him, America would.. and I do not exaggerate... America would have NO problems whatsoever. It would be number one on any list you could think of.
Read THE MILLIONAIRE NEXT DOOR. Warren Buffet is the best next door neighbor you could ever want.

This article shows why it is harder "to be rich and do the right thing" than for a camel to walk through the eye of a needle. Everyone would be better off if they controlled themselves rather than trying to control their income, job, society, etc. Self control starts with not buying things you do not need.

Conspicuous consumption (CC) should be cut back to ZERO.
Conspicuous consumption is consuming ONLY to signal to others that you are successful. It is a disease. A regular consumer will buy necessary items to improve a lifestyle. A CC person will buy things and leave them in the box and brag to friends that they have one. Or they might display it and not use it.
A great book to read for anyone wondering about wealth is THE MILLIONAIRE NEXT DOOR. I admire people who acquire wealth and use it to improve their families and society. They are very different from CC people because they understand the waste and stupidity of buying things that are not needed.

What America must realize, for better or worse, is that TRICKLE DOWN economics is based on people buying things that they do not need. Growth based on middle and lower class workers is so much better because giving them a little extra money will really improve life for everyone. Better education, better productivity, better health. Money spent on that kind of consumption is GREAT for everyone. Money spent on gold and diamond rings and cigars and champagne does NOTHING to help the economy in the long run. In fact it is a negative influence because it encourages people to produce and sell more of that stupid junk.

America has another important lesson to learn. SUVs, McMansions, huge refrigerators, ... all of these things are junk. The last decade of growth in America has been achieved because rich people have been buying things that they do not need with money that they did not have. The good news is that people will learn to live comfortably without all of that junk in the coming years. The bad news is that all Americans will have to keep paying for it as it rusts and rots away.

OK....does no one see the stupidity of this whole situation? Immutable truth #1: People can get rich without "exploiting" or "robbing: someone else. Wealth is something to be proud of and someone who has honestly accumulated wealth is to be congratulated. It is false modesty - hypocrasy - to refrain from spending during a recession if you can afford to do so. In tough times I would very MUCH like the very wealthy to go out and buy as much as they can. Want to know why? Who do you think BUILDS those palatial homes, those fancy cars, those yachts? 9-5 blue collar average people, that's who. If the very wealthy want to go out and spend - let 'em. Encourage them to do so. If anything it's a patriotic act, because it puts more cash in circulation and in the hands of other people who turn around and buy groceries and clothing, etc. with it. I say that the very wealthy could do us all a big service by spending MORE than ever in difficult times. Forget "image" - go for reality.

i love how the premise is that we are all consumers. didn't herbert hoover talk about our mission is now not to be citizens but to be consumers. the zeitgeist of consumer culture has crucial implications for our society's pains yet there is an inherent refusal it seems to question. i mean, with a quote like "only to shop with a vengeance after a respectable amount of time had passed", i wonder what folks look forward to in life besides possessing things they can't take with them when they return to the humble dust that they are. i think we've got a serious problem of nature deficit disorder on our hands and the mainstream media could care less about analyzing this. these god-terms the "market", and "development", and such are unquestionable. after 9/11, we were told to go shopping. amused to death...
