I remain unsure that Obama will. The Somalian pirates are a case in point. No-one is even able to agree on where and how many naval ships should be contributed to dealing with this problem, which occupies water. Not land. The EU and NATO as well as the UN,and even the US Navy have all been largely helpless . What few successes there have been have come from the Indian Navy. Zakaria offers up a confused, scattershot solution to the problem of how non-national terrorist actors become the wielders of national power in their own right, with nuclear Pakistan as Exhibit One.
Obviously, the fortunes of all of the main regional nations Fareed cites can be traced back to here. He makes a ''call to arms''in one article, adopts a ''talk-it-to-death'' in another. Obama is crippled by the ideological tendency to rely upon diplomacy alone to the exclusion of more robust response in the face of what is increasingly apparent. That Pakistan is losing control of their nation to the Taliban and the al Qaedans, who will move in an eventual coup de main to wrest control of the nations nuclear ICBM fleet, that will set Israel,India, and soon Iran upon a path that none may be able to turn back from. Obviously,if such nations cannot with any willingness go along with the ''agendas of a Washington,London or Brussels'',Zakaria can be made damned sure that these democracies will not allow a Moscow,Islamabad,Pyongyang,or Tehran calling the shots either. Obama will be forced to adopt a series of measures both military and diplomatic in their construct. Just as apparant,Obama will not be able to force the use of diplomacy upon other nations in the face of what these see to be a dire threat to their own peoples ,India and Pakistan, Israel,Syria and Iran being prominant examples.

This is what happens when you put the Redneck Party, wait, I mean the Republican Party in charge. That party is lead by a pack of idiots with a lunatic base.

      .
      Hi VSTILLWELL,

You get an Amen on that.
It is d@mn scary to know that 58,343,671 idiots, about 46% of the American electorates, voted for an erratic, molasses-minded, cancer-battling 72-year old ill-tempered man, a man who went against is very own advice by selecting a Wasilla Hillbilly, 'Not-Ready-For-Prime-Time', Airhead-with-an-Attitude and worst possible choice to be within a cancer-strike of the nuclear missile launch codes.

Oh yeah, Sarah 'The Airhead with an Attitude' Palin excited the hypocritical evangelical base, but that same base put Bush & Cheney in office twice; and that says a lot about the credibility of those hypocrites. Having a 'Joe-SixPack' for POTUS is dumb. We just had a Joe-SixPack for the past eight years and look what disasters it has wrought.

May GOD Have Mercy on This Nation!

HaavBline....I think you also made a mathematical error. The difference in 1% of a 15 trillion GDP and 5% of a 4trillion GDP compunded annually does not add up to your figure. Secondly I hardly think it is an Indian point of view, yours certainly is a Pakistani point of view. I guess when you guys are not busy inciting everybody to become terrorists, you are hard at work making incorrect statements! America needs a strategy for countering global terror and Pakistan is the epicenter and epitome of terror. Pakistani ISI was involved in 9/11 and terror groups operating from their are casting a long shadow.

    • Posted By: HaavBline @ 11/30/2008 3:23:48 PM

Jatang: Tell your amusing theory to CIA. And byt the way, I assure you I am no Paki. Like I said, for many Indians, there is a Paki in every bush. You seem to be one of them.

Mr. Zakaria, You should stop writing Nonsense articles, "Grand Strategy", as long as people like don't look at terrorism what it is, that is Islamic Terror there won't be any strategy. Look around Muslims are killing Hindus, Christians, Jews, Buddhists, Animists or anything that is non Muslim. Therefore who is the cause, it is not non muslims, it is Muslims. Look at all the other people groups, they more or less live peacefully and obey the rule of laqw of the country they are living in. Any where the Muslims go, they valways have created problems. Stop spreading this false doctrine. People like us are not fooled.

      Questions:

      1. were those 5 million Vietnamese dead the victims of Muslims or of mostly Christian Americans? 2. were those million Iraqis the victims of Muslims or of good Christian (some born again) Americans? 3. were those million citizens of Afghanistan the victims of Muslims or of good ol' Christian Americans? 4. were those million citizens of Latin America this last century the victims of Muslims or of good ol' Christian Americans? --- I could go on, should you insist, and with references this time.

Sorry for the previous gibberish, I had problems joining the group and signing in.

Mr. Zakaria, I believe the fundamental challenge is that world power must now really and truly be shared among all world major powers, old and new, as among equals. Ultimately, power must be exercised by, and have the support of, the international community of nations. It implies that with regard to the nascent world order (overall world institutions, country representation, rules and regulations, etc., indeed everything defining which constitutes that world order), no attempt to patch up the present system will work. It means that dreams of world hegemony have to be abandoned. The major problem therefore remains that the necessity for radical reform of the old world order has been neither admitted nor understood yet by the United States.

LSE professor John Gray: ???At present the US combines an absolutist insistence on its own national sovereignty with a universalist claim to worldwide jurisdiction. Such an approach is supremely ill-suited to the plural world which globalization has created. The practical upshot of American policy can only be that other powers will act unilaterally when the instability of global markets becomes intolerable. At that point, the jerry-built edifice of global laissez-faire will begin to crumble." ("False Dawn, the Delusions of Global Capitalism")

In view of the American arrogance and impotence displayed at the last G-20 summit in Washington, and considering recent unilateral initiatives by China, as well as by some major European countries, in the current global US generated crisis, I happen to believe this process has already begun. It is urgent, if not too late,

Wanted: A New Grand Strategy? You asked for it and here it is! The biggest worry should be Pakistani terrorists attacking American cities, especially a nuclear strike. Just look at the history of countless attacks by Pakistani terrorists in India. Needless to say the WTC was also attacked twice by Pakistani terrorists. Give them a second chance and they successfully blew up the WTC twin towers. So calling a vicious state like Pakistan an ???ally??? on the war against terror is ridiculous! Pakistan should be financially choked out and forced to merge with a secular India. In the event that this does not work out, the only permanent solution to ending terrorism is to build an international coalition (minus China) to de-nuclearize Pakistan and divide Pakistan into 5 smaller states. Also keep in mind that China is untrustworthy and the West should not cozy up too much to China which is the only country with a history of siding with Pakistan for obvious reasons. China also has a record of proliferating Australian yellowcake to North Korea, Pakistan, Iran, Syria. Do I need to remind you about the infamous Dr. Khan of Pakistan who assisted with China's proliferation to rogue states? Dump China, and divide Pakistan - it will work~!

Yours is clearly an Indian world view. There is a Paki in every bush. No?

      • Posted By: bighappy @ 11/30/2008 11:35:41 AM

Do you mean "bush" or "Bush"?

  • Posted By: bighappy @ 11/29/2008 7:43:57 PM

Let make some math. If country has 5% annual grow - it will take 15 years to double, meaning it will take China more than 30 years to catch even "frozen in time" USA,

    • Posted By: 123BruceLee @ 11/29/2008 8:53:29 PM

You'd better learn math from scratch. It is the compound increase. Say, 10 years ago, China's GDP is only 1/9 of US, but now, it is 1/4. figure it out by computer, not your fingers please.

      • Posted By: bighappy @ 11/30/2008 11:33:38 AM

Click on your computer "Start | All Programs | Accessories | Calculator", then 1.05, x^2 4 times (to produce x^16) - it will be slightly more than 2. Learn how to work with calculator.

???Sarah Palin haters???, I think people who use that phrase are missing the point. It really isn???t hatred, it is disgust, disgust with her many faults and her brazenness and then surprise and disgust first with John McCain for bringing her out of obscurity and now with those who are trying to make her their next puppet to pick up where GWBush left off. There is where the fault really lies. One individual stated they didn???t think she was a sociopathic personality because she had meaningful relationships but, as McCain discovered, it is apparent she just uses relationships for her advantage. They also felt she deserved credit for having her DS baby instead of aborting yet there is the question, does she deserve credit when she constantly uses the baby as a prop, soliciting sympathy and recognition, and then just handing him off? No, those along with all of her other self-focused characteristics, especially the lack of any conscience, strongly suggest she really fits the sociopathic category and would be a real disaster in any national office (as the sociopathic GWBush has been). Personally, I think she is a sick and sad case and simply wish she would just fade away. George W Bush has proven to be the worst President this country has ever had and we need to remember all of it in order to recognize and reject anyone else who is similar ??? Sarah Palin is a cut from the same mold! The Republican Party can do better and we need to demand that they do so, not for them but for us.

With terrorists politicians play. "Good" (favourable) - feed, bad (not suitable) - destroy. The one who uses terrorists in the dirty policy should answer.

havanna:comment: in today's world we can explicitly see how much stability, prosperity and peace and dignity america brought in afganistan, ??raq or vietnam!!!!!. this is a great, global game. and in this game u are always trying to fool people sharing same views with mr bush in the aim of bringing aforementioned goods for humanity. but the administrations, in recorded history, has always acted contrary to what they promised.. know that the sun rise from east and shines in west.So in the future that flashlight shining will arise from ISTANBUL which is the ever best capital of the world history and the greatest empire-ottoman.

"It was a strange document in many ways, a throwback to a world in which "dominating a region" and "controlling resources" were seen as sources of lasting national power. (China has done neither, and yet by developing its economy has become the world's No. 2 power.)"

This is a absolutely wrong statement. China has time and again shown aggresiveness that defies it being a peaceful and benign nation. It has continuosly tried to "dominate a region" (claiming Taiwan and Indian states of Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim as its own) and "controlling resources" (it is on a killing spree for oil fields around the globe albeit not the American way). America is maturing rapidly in terms of its role in the world but China is like a kid that wants the superpower lolly at all costs. And so it will end up tip toeing the American style foreign policy of the last century of meddling in other countries affairs and disturbing their peace. What America and President elect Obama needs to do in terms of foreign policy is to align with and strengthen the peace loving and democratic countries around the world to tackle the menace of communist and islamist nations that threaten world peace.

Good political ideas, but Fareed made some incorrect assumptions based on poor basic math skills.

"For the past two decades, for example, China has grown at approximately 9 percent a year and the Unitate States at 3 percent. For the next few years, American growth will likely be 1 percent and China's, by the most conservative estimates, 5 percent. So, China was growing three times as fast as the United States but will now grow five times as fast, which only brings closer the date when the Chinese economy will equal in size that of the United States."

Not so. It is the differential of the two country???s growth percentages that matters. When Chinas grew at 9% annually while US grew at 3%, the growth differential is 6% per annum. But if China slows to 5% per annum while USA managed to keep 1% growth, then China is catching up to the US by 4% annual rate, slower than the 6% catching up rate. It does NOT matter China's growth rate is now 3 times or 5 times that of the US in the future. In fact, if the growth rate differential slows from 6% to 4% annually for the next 15 ??? 20 years, then it will take at least 5 more years for China to rich the same level as the US in terms of Purchasing Power Parity.

I think Fareed made the same mistake in his previous week editorial about China.

D@mn, Obama! You Picked A Fine Time To Be The Nation's First Biracial President!

1.) - two unending wars (Iraq & Afghanistan) and potential issues with Iran,
2.) - the need to play peace maker between two nuclear harmed nations (Pakistan & India),
3.) - the need to arbitrate peace between Palestinians and Israelis,
4.) - Putin chumming up to Big-mouth Hugo Chavez with Russian war ships and nuclear ambitions in Venezuela,
5.) - Genocide and starvation by the millions throughout the African Continent,
6.) - Drug wars, kidnappings, and killings spilling out of Mexico across the borders in to the U.S.
7.) - Global warming is clearly getting worst as polar ice caps melt fresh waters into salty oceans at a faster pace than first measured,
    8.) - national economic meltdown,
    9.) - skyrocketing unemployment,
    10.) - Bush/Cheney disastrous energy policies,
11.) - record breaking home foreclosures,
12.) - unaffordable or no health insurance coverage,
13.) - lost investments, pensions and retirement plans,
14.) - never ending national debt,
    15.) - out-of-reach affordable education
16.) - lost of international credibility
17.) - lost of international admiration,
    18.) - divisions in government,
19.) - hemorrhaging of jobs to overseas slave labor markets,

May GOD Bless the United States of America!
May GOD Bless the Obama-Biden Leadership Team!
