I have never been either impressed or surprised with the rhetoric, ever present, in Mr. Ross???s articles regarding Iran.

Nowhere and at no time, in his writings and opinions has he ever addressed or voiced any policies that are align with the American values but has consistently voiced and promoted elements in American foreign policies that would suit best Israel.

Mr. Ross is a first class Israeli citizen hiding in American passport and a distinguished member in {Israel first} elite whom the true Americans must quickly learn to dispel and expel.

Wage a war of economics, strangle them, help the opposition in Iran...if that don't work, a massive airstrike involving hundreds of planes, targeting thier air-defense, command centers, thier "navy", airbases, IRGC bases, anything that degrades thier ability to strike back. A DECAP strike should be part of it. Hezbollah will attack Israel, giving the Israeli's a reason to strike back. This may unavoidable, since the Persians are deluded and psychotic. Bombs Away!!!

You could not possibly be talking about the Persians here. Or if you are you must be totally ignorant about who they are and what makes one a Persian.
You talk about bombing them. The US and the occupiers leaders have considered that for a long time and concluded that they both are no match for a country with such resolve to defend itself.

I, as an Iranian, choose to ignore and forgive you for such comments here for if you were least familiar with the Persians you would regret not being born one till the last breath.

It seems that there are Catholic priests today who are advocating that anyone who voted for Obama needs to now go to confession as Obama hasn???t taken a firm stand for Pro-Life. It would seem that that limited view is irresponsible in its??? advocating the importance of the single issue and in accepting everything else without concern for quality/sinfulness, a very limited conscience at best. In contrast, what would seem very appropriate today is for all clergy that preached for voters to select Bush-Cheney should now fall on their faces before God and beg His forgiveness. Probably what would be more realistic is for clergy to simply stop using the pulpit to broadcast their political views based on their limited biases.

F the Catholic church. Maybe THEY need to confess how they hid pedophiles by moving them from parish to parish. The Church and its leaders ALL belong in jail. Just like Cheney, Rummy, Wolfie, Scooter, Tenet, must I go on?

As an ex-long-term registered Republican I think about what happened to turn me around to become a confirmed Independent who actually voted Democratic in the last three presidential elections. I literally hadn???t voted for a Democratic presidential candidate since JFK but also I never voted for Nixon, abstaining then, so probably I???d be considered as always having been an Independent leaning Republican. Last night I had a conversation with a really close and good friend who is a strong, unwavering Republican, who obviously was greatly disappointed that Barack Obama had won, and it made me again think about what changed my thinking. I still believe in the Republican principals that the least amount of government is the best government and that government should only do for the people that which they can???t do for themselves but I also recognize that inherent in that are the real and necessary responsibilities to protect the people from exploitation by the powerful few and to insure fair and equitable opportunity for all (not just for the few) and in my opinion you can add that government has the strong responsibility to be both honest and transparent. Those responsibilities, each and every one of them, as I see it, are where the Republican Party currently fails to adequately perform and to even honestly care. GWBush, DCheney, KRove, CRice, many others and obviously including SPalin and even JMcCain, who actually changed to conform, are all examples of those who display cavalier attitudes that totally confirm the problem. To me, two characteristics stand out that explain it: Their attitude ??? they arrogantly and belligerently think they are right in everything and can just do whatever they want, expecting that if they need to, they will just boldly offer subterfuge to manipulate public opinion; and Their focus ??? they irresponsibly concentrate on benefiting Special Interests and a select few, who provide them overt and covert support, contributions and promised after office compensation, while they give the average American only apathy, the costs and deceptive rhetoric, including appeals to individual biases aimed just to manipulate. Barack Obama has proven that a more centrist and moderate position, honestly focused on all of the people and presented with respect, can not only appeal to the people but it can also solicit the required support. Hopefully the Republicans will learn from that and cease selling themselves and their focus to Special Interests and a select few so we can once again have a competitive choice for fairly representing all of the people. It isn???t about conservative v liberal, it is about responsibility and honesty; it isn???t about Republican v Democrat, it is about integrity and character; it isn???t about being manipulated by appeals to limited issues, it is about recognizing the need to be effective for all Americans.

NEWS, Bush & Co are a bunch of criminals. A thorough investigation by the FBI will shine the light on thier transgressions. Love to see Cheney in shackles, it would make my DECADE. Wat a P.O.S....

Dennis Ross is wrong if he thinks sanctions (even tough ones) will bring the government of Iran to the negotiation table. Sanctions did not work in Iraq, did not work in Serbia or Cuba or North Korea. They never work. Sanctions *do* indeed cause suffering, but only among the population and - no! - they will not rise and overthrow the government. An extenal threat - in every case - strengthens governments and weakens the people and limits their rights (Please refer to US after 9/11).

Dennis Ross is also wrong when he says a military threat will scare the government. Everyone knows that a military invasion is not an option and an air campaign will not stop Iran's nuclear drive. Iranians know it too.

As long as Dennis Ross and people like him in the US administration are stuck in the: "you-must-do-as-I-say" diplomacy, things will not change and Iran will march towards building a bomb. US needs a freash, radical approach to Iran instead of the old failed policies. Unfortunately I don't see that in Dennis Ross' words. It's just more of the same.

'an air campaign will not stop Iran's nuclear drive. '...the israeli air force would beg to differ on that score

Comment: December 3rd to December 14th , 1971 is the time that the Pakistani Army Genocide of the Bangladeshi Muslims came to an end. 3 million Muslims were slaughtered by the Pakistani Army in 1971, historically the biggest genocide of Muslims.

Yah so what, is that you Olmert? Still upset over your Lebanon adventure, you do need more practice before playing in big league.

The article states, "It's not too late to stop Iran from getting the bomb. Tehran clearly wants nukes for both defensive and offensive purposes." Where's the evidence of this? The IAEA, after close monitoring and 17 surprise inspections, has not found any diversion of nuclear material to military purpose. So this statement is an outrright lie.

"Iran has continued to pursue nuclear weapons." ANother outright lie without a shred of evidence to support this. What preposterous and transparent neocon propaganda this is.

Let's get something straight. Under the NPT, Iran has the INALIENABLE RIGHT to enrich uranium. THere is no ambiguity there. Furthermore, Iran is under NO OBLIGATION to accept any inducements to cease its legal activity. Iran is under NO OBLIGATION to abandon its legal rights under an international treaty.

Dennis Ross, so you call yourself a "Distinguished Fellow" - I'd say that the title of "Blatant Liar" would be more appropriate, going on the deliberate falsehoods, allegations without evidence and massive distortions in order to demonise Iran for no reason. As long as Iran is under the umbrella of the NPT, nobody, not the USA, not the IAEA or the UNSC has any right whatsoever to try and stop Iran from conducting nuclear work. Iran can have as many centrifuges as it likes - the NPT does not limit this at all.

Dennis Ross, you are a disgrace and if this is the way you operate, I would say that your book "Statecraft: And How to Restore America???s Standing in the World??? will do the exact opposite. The USA is hated all over the world because of the way it has behaved, interfering in the internal affairs of sovereign states, deposing governments, assassinating elected leaders and illegally making war on other nations, just to name a few transgressions.

It's not Iran that has to modify its behaviour - it is the USA that has to completely change, because if it continues to rampage around the world, trying to bully other nations, eventually those nations will stand up to the USA. In fact, the USA has not won any war since World War Two because of its methodds. The Americans lost in Vietnam and it cost 55,000 troops for absolutely nothing The Iraq War has seen the Americans cop a thorough drubbing and they will depart in 2011 swith their tails between their legs, only to see Iran and Iraq form a Shiite alliance on the spot.

And when the US dollar loses its hegemony as the world reserve currency when oil-producers such as Russia, Venezuela, Iran and others start bypassing NYMEX and IPE and sell their oil for other currencies, the US dollar will lose whatever value it now has and the US economy will die. This is what is ahead for the USA and why? Because people like Dennis Ross think that they can manipulate the truth and foment wars and conflict, however the world is waking up to these warmongers and will not only resist, but beat the USA in the long term. The American Empire is OVER.

tThis piece adds no value and offers no new insight on the subject.
Currently there is a political struggle between many mullahs and the revolutionary guards (Ahmadi Nejad's group, who RGs might replace since even they think he can't run the country). Not sure where Khamenei stands here, but probably he will try to be on the winner's side.
The RG is an economic force within Iran and is trying to gain more power. It also complicates matters more that they might have business interests in the Nuclear Energy contracts.
The right way to deal with Iran is not by economic sanctions right now. Obama should open a diplomatic office (not an embassy) in Tehran and have some low level talks while Ahmadi Nejad is in office. If Khatami or another reformist becomes president this will make it easier for them to talk to US. However NO bargain should be offered to Iran until after the election. Otherwise Ahmadi Nejad will claim his tough stance defeated US.

will you care to elucidate what you were speculating by

iran wants nukes for both defensive and offensive reasons

it was not just contradictory but hilariously absurd and made this whole piece look like a parable or a travestuy

also usa should attack iran right away as the indications are in a few months or a year it might be asking germans for economic aid

make hay while the sun still shines on wall street
good luck in the crusade against the ayotullahs
may christ be with the yanks

This is a very well-reasoned and balanced argumentation, and itis rightly biased towards the cautionary side of portraying Iran as being bothmore aggressive and/or more capable than it really is. I lived the Iranain Revolution and can claim, without making myself a laughing stock, to know something of Iranain aspirations both because I am a Sunni Muslim who has gained the respect of many Iranian friends over the years for having faithfully represented, in opinion articles, the yearning of the Iranain people for their legitimate place of honour within the broader Muslim world and for their legitimate aspirations for influence within their region in Central Asia and on the Eurasian landmass, and for having nurtured an intense interest in Iranain affairs throughout the past thirty years since the revolution, even as I have travelled all over the world.

I am convinced that I am right that the Iranian establsihment does not itself know, in its collective psyche, whther it really wants to actually have nuclear weapons. It wants to master the technology for both peaceful nuclear energy and weapons. Simultaneously, it wants to be instrumental, for reasons of prestige and influence within the Muslim world and the emerging 'region-state' in South/Central/West Asia, in being among the vanguard to spearhead a meaningful nuclear disarmament programme n the Middle-East and South Asia, along with Muslim neighbour Pakistan and cultural kin India.

Next year's election might see Ayatollah Mohammad Khatami presenting himself as a candidate for Presidential elections, once again after having ben President once before and after having lost another Presidential election later. He is a man for a mutually-enriching inter-faith 'dialogue of civilizations' . Coordinated economic sanctions such as proposed by Mr. Ross, but that does notinflict undue hardship on the Iranain people, might be just the right strategy to help Khatami get elected.

In the worst situation envisaged by Ross that Iran is actually seeking to have nuclear weapons, Khatami will be the man who can roll back that disastrous course. In the more liekly scenario that I envisage where Iran is also seeking to assert in a muscular way its legitimate aspirations for influence, the dialogue with Israel and with the West for nuclear disarmament, both within the Midle East and more broadly, would be given a much-needed boost.

Nothing like adding insult to injury Mr. Bush. For eight years you have arrogantly and boldly, belligerently and obnoxiously lied to justify, rationalize and disguise everything. You pressured the intelligence community to give you justification while you ignored all the information that countered your private intents against Iraq and in the process practically abandoned the pursuit of bin Laden and el Qaeda; you constantly, aggressively pursued a private agenda in everything while unconscionably disregarding your responsibilities. You have brazenly focused on benefit for Special Interests and a select few, even bragging that you will quickly pass your father and Bill Clinton in wealth from after office compensation (kickbacks), while literally creating and/or adding to all of the problems and simply completely neglecting America???s best interests. You have done all of it (the injury) without any conscience or hesitation and now have the nerve to offer the deceptive rhetoric (the insult) that you were surprised and unprepared for the war, that you have honestly done your best for the American people and that you have always had real values that you totally maintained. Mr. President you have been the worst president this country has ever had and boldly demonstrate a personality that is totally self-indulgent and really lacks any conscience. Hopefully history will fully identify who you have really been, which is a sociopathic puppet who tried to con the world as you pursued the interests of the few who pulled your strings.

I agree we shouldnt keep sacrificing everything to deal with isreal's bullshit but if IRAN rules middle east then no oil for us so what choice we have.

by the way....the same Dennis Ross who co-founded AIPAC? Why are all these Israeli fifth columnists in our government to begin with? They are just taking us from one war to another. The only difference between the democrat Israeli moles and the republican Israeli moles is tactic; the goal of raping America's resources for their motherland is a constant.

  • Posted By: sayyestochess @ 12/02/2008 2:43:29 AM

Our government is AIPAC, and Congress is little more than a puppet show. Israel should fend for its own pathetic self. Less than 5% of Amrican give a crap about Israel anyway, yet all our politicians are such passionate mouthpieces for that rogue state; the rogue state at the heart of most of our national security woes.

We need legislation limiting the influence of the pro-Israel lobby. End of story!

  • Posted By: happytobeusa @ 12/01/2008 5:35:34 PM

Ross is a joke. Plain and simple. If we want this kind of analysis, we can just go straight to the source - The Israeli government. Otherwise we should be debating these issues rather than just spewing rhetorical gobs on the nation's opinion pages.

  • Posted By: Repubssuck @ 12/01/2008 2:27:43 PM

DrewCAENG, I doubt the negoiations have acomplished anything either. We'll have no choice if Iran developes a weapon except to blow up the facility. If Iran get's a Nuclear weapon and fires it at israel the world could die before the retalliation is completed. I think it's a moot point because Israel will not roll the dice with iran. Israel will act if they can't get us to do the dirty work first. It's a seriously one-sided deal we have with them. Israel rarely takes our advice and still expects us to be on board with everything they do.
