In response to the "Fat Runner:" I do see this is what is wrong with society when a size 14 is fat. Before I read the article, I thought it was a story of her success in overcoming obesity by running the pounds away. That photo of Jennifer Graham shows a beautiful woman. She exemplifies the goal for many obese women. How sad she accepts that label and how sad for all of us that we understand.
You look great.
How dare you call yourself fat? Give me a break!
Sorry, no way, no how does the picture of this "fat runner" look fat. She looks lean and the fact that she says she is a size 14 puts her in the realm of "normal". Not impressed....
I loved this article. I felt like you were channeling me. I'm a "fate" runner, too. Not huge, just not thin. I find skinny runner are very supportive. (I have a 5-minute mile friend who never makes me feel like a dolt when I finish a race at my 12-minute pace.) But I have skinny nonrunners say annoying things. I was preparing for a challenging 10-mile race in my community, and a skinny colleague ask, incredulously: "You're going to run 10 miles." She asked me a gain a couple weeks later, like she really couldn't believe someone who looked like me could run that. Yes, I did it, and then a ran a half marathon a year later. So there.
Um...newsflash: size 14 is not fat. It's solidly average for American women. This is a great article, and it perpetuates myths about body size and expectations for women.
I too am a "fat" runner, will never be less than a size 12 but I know how good running makes me feel and do it for that reason alone. Great article Jennifer and keep on running.
I too am a "fat" runner. Will never be less than a size 12, but real runners like you and I know why we run and how good its makes us feel, so therefore we have something more important than size. Jennifer keep on running.
This was funny and well written. Excellent job highlighting exercise is for everyone.
