One way to fight these pirates is to pose as merchant ships to lure them in to capture them. Then force them to...eat so full that they beg for mercy

Is Puntland where the 'good' Somalis (viz NOT Islamic courts) come from?

One should be able to speak the language of democracy and free enterprise to such 'allies', no?

The U.S. Navy could blockade the Somolian coast, but the US taxpayer should not be expected to foot the bill. The costs should be covered by the ships needing the protection. I believe It would be more cost effective for the shipping companies to pay a protection surcharge, than to sail around the Cape of Good Hope.

Here we go, again, blaming the US for not solving the world's problems. Perhaps we should sit down with the pirates to try and understand their needs. Perhaps we should make them stand in the corner for a "time-out". Oh no, it is the responsibility of the American taxpayer to pay for it while standing in the unemployment line, worrying about losing his house. We certainly can't expect action from the owners of the very oil which is being held for ramsom. The wealthy sheiks who live in palaces and ride in limousines, while thumbing their noses at the world.

It's better to get a somali Native persons who can solve those Pirates sutch as provisional Intelegence group who are inside Somalia and can know every steps of those pirates and their decions.

Last time I checked, Afganistan was a land locked country, and Iraq does not have that much coastline. So where the hell are all of our Naval resources tied up? We're paying for them. Lets use them for something they are very qualified to handle.

these are not somali pirates. these are Somali Cost Gard. they just look like pirates because they are hungry for a goverment that takes care of them. that is really true. these younge people are all around 30 years of age, and they have never seen any kind of rule of law. They dont have a goverment. Their god fathers are war lords and their future is in dark. We need to help them we dont need to kill them.... They are the victims of our KJB forieng policy.

Ships that are target for these modern day "pirates" should be properly equipped to defend themselves, knowing the have to travel that route. As soon as the pirates appear in view, blast them out of the water. Get them before they get you. Simply adopt an attitude of "enough of this nonsense already"!

Is the U.S. not already in a war on terror? is this not a form of terror? Yet we won't take action because it would be like declaring war, lol. oh really didn't know you could declare war on individuals without a country behind them. is the world such a horable place that it takes a number that can no longer be acceptable before someone acts? I'll do it. send me in. all i ask is to stop hiding behind your desk and do something about it that's why you were appointed by the little people who put you in office. forget about the big money corps. that you recieve your big houses from. do something before this world becomes less than what it already is... Sgt. Davis, US ARMY 101st Airborne, 13-F, OIF Vet sep 05 - sep 06, Oct 07 - Nov 08. if you won't sign me up!

Arm the vessels with equivalent fire power and blast the pirates at sea and sink there ships.
leave them swimming for there lives and feed them to the "sharks".
If they do make it back to shore they will think twice before doing that again.
that would be the most cost efficient way of fixing this.

Whichever country's flag the ship is flying should be the country to protect the ship.

    Pretty simple really.

    So lets see:
Option 1= regime change (ala Iraq)
Option 2= Fleets of Warships chasing down speedboats (ala Afghanistan)

I think I like option 3 better: Remove ridiculous laws forbidding merchant ships from arming themselves, and stop wasting the stolen wealth of the individuals of America, UK, France, et. al. In fact, stop stealing from people all together! The Somali pirates could never dream of matching the amount of theft perpetrated on people everyday by "their governments".

Somalians have been doing the actions. Who are working with them, who is giving them the direction and what is behind all that supports. Before anyone is blamed, it's better to give a chance to conduct an investigation. The perpetrators may become innocent dupes and cause more problem for their people and help outside companies make money from the Somalian water. The World must help Somalia to get its government back in order to prevent this bad actions.

  • Posted By: boliino @ 12/06/2008 11:32:24 PM

The easiest way to stamp out piracy in Somalia is to find out what forced this group to hunt ships. Is is preventable or there are outside groups who has been using the perpetrators. These groups could be well known companies which sees potential business in the Somalian water. Before action is taken I would recommend the world with the Somalians conduct investigation. The truth would come out, and the solution will follow.

This is unbelievable. You bleeding heart morons. What in gods name are you thinking. Lawyers, fish hatcheries, pay Somalia, and so on. This has got to be one of the most corrupt regions on the face of this earth. There is no way to correct this except by cutting these people off COMPLETELY. No I don't care about their population. I don't care if they can't feed the children or see a doctor. Cut them off and make the Somalia Govt. address the problem.
As far as international waters...sink a few pirate ships and see how quick they go back to shore.

Face Value Answers, your knowledge is probably from...watching cartoons.

Have you been to the oceans? It's huge (3 times all continents combined). Pirate ships also don't have black flags with the skull and bones for you to shoot down

And if you said it's one of the most corrupt regions, then how can you make Somalian government be responsbible? Pay them? You would rather pay to set up a private Somalian security force

  • Posted By: martialguy @ 12/06/2008 9:02:19 AM

    Will someone
Pay Somalian to get rid of the problem (Could be expensive)
    OR
Prey for a tsunami to wipe them off the real world and keep them in Johny Depp movies ( Less expensive) ?

You don't need a lot of large naval vessels to combat the pirates. You use technology and smaller sea-worthy vessels. Sensors in the water, predators in the sky, subs, and modern-day equivalents to the PT boat should be able to do the job. With larger numbers of smaller, heavily armed, swift, manouverable boats, you should be able to control the seas off Somalia.
