If you don't learn from history you are doomed to repeat it, the article mentioned the british blockade of France, yet somehow seemed to skirt around how that was accomplished, it mentions expense but does not ecplain how the blockade that was succesful occured, give up? For some of you old movie fans and sailors out there the answer comes easily.
But of course today's government does not want to recognize certain facts, they may be looking for weapons of mass destruction.
Perhaps they have legions of clerks searching for exactly the right words to spell it out, there really is no nice way to say it, the cost of operating a navy is enormous the British knew that and they had 2 ways of reducing that cost one was simply going into a town and making people serve the navy for free. The other was piracy under a term called angary a force seized what they needed and whatevert they captured they took.
    Not nice is it?
It is not nice that in this day and age there are pirates.
Politics seems to be ignoring facts re-labeling certain actions to sound good ( weapons of mass destruction) taking actions with "plausible deniablilty" and using regan-like accounting methods (like a toilet seat for 1,500) ((wonder where some of that money went to))
Fact is George Bush was head of the C.I.A. and weekly denying to the media that we were in Laos, Thailand and Cambodia then when he became president one of his first acts in office was to give medals to soldiers who were in Laos, Thailand and Cambodia.
There is a problem in India with "terrorists" (call them pirates maybe?) now India and Packistan may indulge in an exchange of nuclear missiles, George W. sent Donald Rumsfeld over to collect a debt owed to enron, this debt was incurred through a 3 part plan to "modernize" India's electrical power, first a coal fired plant (excleint for global warming) second a gas fired plant and lastly a nuclear plant, this plant was capable of supplying 20 times more power than the whole country was using at that time, What do you think their thougths are when you have more nuclear material than you need to make power?
All in all the way I see it, governments let problems form then come up with half-assed solutions and in the process have a few extra dollars to spend on things they wanted but could not get away with otherwise.
So what are we doing here, looking for solutions or creating problems so that the solutions will look acceptable to John Q. Public?
Bread and circus's that is how the roman's controlled their population, and if worked very well the decline was due to greed and stupidity not public acceptance or correction of problems,
As I said prior those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it,
So I am writing a book "The Rise and Fall of the American People".

All vessels sailing within 500 miles of Somalia should be armed with sufficient arms to obliberate the pirates. Hit them when they attack rather than wasting time & money cruising around looking for pirates in an area too vast to adaquately cover.

Why don't the 20 nations who have sent naval crews out to patrol, actually board the ships who need safe passage? Have the armed forces already on board when the ship leaves port, that way when the pirates try to take the ship, the ship will already have men who are trained to protect the ship.

Submarines are the answer to this problem. I would bet my life that the U.S. and other countries have several subs in this area on patrol. I like the idea of having "bait ships"....large oil tankers, cruise ships...whatever...that intentionally sail in dangerous waters. When an attack on one is imminent, a silent black behemoth emerges from the depths, cuts the pirates & their boat in half with a few .50 cals...then submerges again. No questions asked...piracy problem solved....and the sharks eat well for a day.

Agreed! We just have to get used to the fact however that the powers-that-be will always procrastinate in every situation (particularly one involving Africa) in which their national security is directly threatened... but hang on, aren't these pirate folk a threat to oil from reaching the USA safely??

    • Posted By: MonkeySpanker @ 12/06/2008 11:12:52 AM

Read the article not jsut the posts about it. according to the article only 20% of the WORLD's oil supply is being threatened.. From the article it is unclear how much of that actually lands on US shores. This is not just a US problem, and it is not a problem for the US to solve alone.

This is Dumb. some reporter telling the Military how to best use its resources.
    Pssh, OK.

Letters of Marque would be an Internationally accepted and legal means to fight the pirates, at no cost to any goverment.

  • Posted By: rashid120583 @ 12/02/2008 9:54:06 AM

I do not disagree that imposing a full scale blockade would stop pirating in the short term - I just question the effectiveness of a strategy that makes a permanent commitment of U.S. Navy ships and personnel.

The problem with this idea is it is a short term solution to a long term problem. Blocking the coast is expensive. How long would you blockade it? A year? Ten? Indefinitely? What you are proposing is an open-ended conflict with no end in sight. If you do not "fix" Somalia, what do you think will happen when you remove the blockade? Will they be sufficiently chastised and ignore the ships carry multi million dollar cargos just off their coasts?

Destroying the ports and firing on the city will make an already miserable population more so without actually killing any priates; indeed, short of flattening the city most of the Pirates will simply leave the area. We keep imagining pirates in the sense that there is some sort of unified organization of pirates that if we decapitate, the rest will wither and die. I'd argue the model is more similar to terrorism; multiple independent actors. We'll spend half a million dollar missile to blow up a ramshackle tin roofed hut and accomplish nothing in the long run.

Finally, stabilizing Somalia is in America???s long term security interest as well. Have we learned nothing from Iraq and Afghanistan and the hazards that are created from failed-states?

    • Posted By: MonkeySpanker @ 12/06/2008 11:06:35 AM

I agree to some extent. I am tired of the US trying to fix the world. All countries go through their own struggles and msut be allowed to do so. The wolrd as a whole has become so pussified, especially when ti comes to Africa. Plus, the US government does not own these cargo ships correct? I feel it is up to the Companies that do won them to protect their property on the open sea. Now if they would like to purchase the protection of the US military, great.! ( THis of course will bring up all sorts of other issues which many here will reply and point out to me, feel free but I am already aware of them) These pirates are acting like terrorists and should be treated as such. I have read countless news stories where the people that live in these coastline villages are also profiting from the pirates so they are unwilling to give them up, some may say that makes them jsut as bad, and if so, why do we really care if these "innocent" people sufer the same fate? of course it is going to add to their discontent in the world, it would be taking away the revenue stream that the pirates have been providing.

i agree we need to stop looking at the world's problems and thinking we can change them. We can't. It is costing us too much. not just monetarily but also in lives of our own people. It's stupid. I perosnally don't want to be a beacon of light and good in the world, I'd prefer we take care of our own and let the rest of the world do the same, sure help when and where we can, but Americans first. What these pirates are is thugs and they are using the sympathy the world has for their plight to try to justify their actions, it is time for the world to stand up and say " We dont feel sorry for you any longer"

Give mercenaries a bounty on each pirate and pirate ship taken or destroyed. A fast and cheap solution. You can also dust off an atomic bomb or two and drop it on the pirates... an even faster and cheaper solution.

My suggestion send in a team at night 25000ft halo in water landing come up from the water and eliminate the threat freeing the hostages and sending a message to these pirates were not *** with you go home where you belong. your not ready for the big show. will hostages die might loose a few but to save the majority a small price to pay to fight terrorism. everyone always talks bout what they would do if they were in this sitituation. Well here is their chance stand up and fight or die trying.

Why cannot this situation be taken to the UN, since Somalia has asked for help.Other country tankers and ships are beening taken.UK, Russia were both mentioned in this artical. So why does it have to be use stop them If they live in a town called Boosaaso , and the ships are kept in the ports of Eyl, Hobyo, or Haradhere, and Somalia has given permission to go after them even on land, Why doesn't the countrys get together and get them out. Stop them.

    • Posted By: MonkeySpanker @ 12/06/2008 10:44:40 AM

THe UN is useless unless it is for somehting in the defense of an African nation. If it doesnt involve sending money or aide to Africa the UN doesn't want to be involved.

  • Posted By: stanbo @ 12/06/2008 10:44:07 AM

You want to solve this issue once and for all. Put raiders in the waters steaming back and forth off their safe havens. The German navy used them during world war 2. Put a dozen freighters and other vessels off shore that are heavily armed with camouflaged canon's and other armaments manned by navel personnel including seals (not just US ships but others as well) And just blow them out of the water when they attack.

I guess the comment about getting the pirates a lawyer to tell us their needs and concerns pretty much sums up the current situation in our country in the midst of Obama/Hillary mania. I fear for us greatly in the next 4 years as this group controls the world. I would like to suggest we offer to trade Nancy Pilosi fand Harry Reid
    for the oil tanker.

    • Posted By: MonkeySpanker @ 12/06/2008 10:42:15 AM

Ah.. and ecellent point. In he next four years we are going to see nothing but the negotiation with terrorists. Let's face it, that is exactly what these pirates are, TERRORISTS. The only reason this problem has not already been solved militarily is because we have a bleeding heart vaginalizrd congress now. Can you imagine when we have the same in the white house?

  • Posted By: Roast Pork @ 12/06/2008 10:18:50 AM

I think we should send them cigarettes, liquor, blow, and crank, and let them party their way to hell.

    • Posted By: omsky81 @ 12/06/2008 10:30:38 AM

Typical American ignorance answer !! Please get more involved in the world its not that big anymore and answers like this one makes real American in the rest of the small world we live in today's look like arrogant and uneducated society!!!!

      • Posted By: MonkeySpanker @ 12/06/2008 10:36:54 AM

Some will never see or understand sarcasm and will always make themselves look like overly sensitive vaginalized members of the society they live in. Like most readers have done, the above post you mentioned in your post should have simply been skipped over.

Invite them to San Francisco, give them amnesty, and have their leaders interviewed on Opera and the View. Then give GM, Ford, and Chrysler the money to build plants in Somalia so the population can join the UAW and get life-time medical benefits and $78.00 an hour.
