I agree with analysis presented in this article, however, they missed a few important points. I have written an article describing the political factors which led to intelligence agencies being caught unawares of the terror attacks in Mumbai:

To Indian nation: The Bomby act of terror need to be condemend as much as one can do, but if some one sit and think impartially, few questions will arrise in mind. What was the objective of attack?, what was the demand of terriorists? did terriorist achieved their objectives? According to me the only thing which appears is to build tension between the two neighbours. The peace process which was buildingup friendly relations between the two nations has been hijacked. Lets think over it and try to cooldown the situation.

There are so many terrorist attacks in Pakistan on a regular basis organized by the Indian secret service, as yet no European government or U.S officials say any thing to India about it. An attack allegedly by some people from Pakistan, not by Pakistani government agencies is getting calls for Pakistan to act.

Pakistan created medieval terrorists th eTaliban. Pakistani army and IS fought alongside Taliban against the Mujhadeen. Pakistan controlled Afghanistan through Taliban. All terrorist attacks since last 7 years have come From Pakistan. pakistanis were implicated in British railways attack. laskar terrorist group has rallies in pakistan attended by pakistani politicians. It operates freely in pakistani Punjab and Pakistani Occupied kashmir. These mumbai terrorists send by laskar taibba murdered citizens of britian, US, Israel, australia, Japan, China, Italy, germany besides Indians. It is high time that Pakistan be declared a terrorist State and cut off from International monetary, military, trade. Strangle this country and its people will soon realize that supporting and creating terrorists has its repurcussions that it cannot afford if it wants to survive. But just like NY times map of future Pakistan wait and see this terrorist state disintegrate and Baluchistan will be an independent country, NWFP will go to Afghanistan. Pakistani President with his 200 Cohorts went on abegging trip to China and Saudi arabia and came back with nothing. Pakistan supporting countries have begun to realize that pakistanis are friends to no one. Chinese separatist have been supported in pakistan.

Here is a partial list of people who opposed the Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA) in India.

    1. Shabana Azmi (Actress, Muslim, Marxist)
    2. Arundhati Roy (Writer, Christian, Marxist)
    3. MJ Akbar (Journalist, Muslim, Marxist)
    4. Teesta Setalvad (social worker, Hindu, Marxist)

We request Newsweek to interview these personalities and get their opinions. But we can predict the response.

    1. Western philosophy will be copiously used. Plato and Aristotle will be quoted. Marx, Engels, class-warfare, caste-warfare will be quoted. Sartre and Camus will be quoted. But there will be no condemnation of the terrorists.

    2. Islam will be praised. The Catholic Church will be praised. Anything remotely Indian or Hindu will be abused. From the lowliest beggar to the greatest scientist - all will be damned (as long as they are Hindu). But there will be no condemnation of the terrorists.

    3. Some anti-social act on a minority person will be obtained. In a nation of over a billion, how difficult can it be? This event will be played again and again. Each time with a slight variation, each time with a different commentary, with a different color and context. The western media, starved of sensationalism, is more than happy to oblige. Credibility is provided by the addition of one or more of these intellectuals. The original incident is now magnified a thousand times, maybe a million times. It is a bit like looking at a bacteria magnified a million times. It can be frightening. But, at the end of the day, there will be no condemnation of the terrorists.

Also, you will be left with the impression that the typical Indian villager (a hapless individual earning less than $1 a week, unlikely to see any form of wealth in his lifetime) regularly rapes a nun after lunch. You will be left with the impression that everyday Indians somehow deserved the Mumbai Massacre. Somehow, the Indians had it coming.

I listed above four "great social leaders." GREAT SOCIAL LEADERS. Each one will support the others. They provided the support the terrorists were counting on even before the atrocities took place. Why? Because these so-called GREAT SOCIAL LEADERS create the climate in which terrorists can flourish. They decried and called for the abolition of laws that once successfully prevented terrorist attacks.

It is unclear how any of us benifitted from the lapse of India's Prevention of Terrorism Act. What is clear is that 183 humans of every race, color, creed, and way of life have been brutally massacred. And that we could have easily prevented the slaughter. And that we did not.

layman, calm down, it seems like it is you who do not like anything other than a "hindu", that too not a Dalit. YOu have put everybodyelse in your hate "hitlist". Just because somebody thinks and lives a progressive life doe s not mean that they are "marxists". Are there real Marxists anymore in the world?
You are a good example of the Hindu Nazi element which is killing the concept of Indian Secular democracy at this point. Do you know that these terrorists were shown the pictures of Gujarat killings (by Hindu Nazi storm troopers) and provacative speeches by your leader like Thogadia? You cannot kill fir eby fire. You need to stop this cycle of hate.

"Are there real Marxists anymore in the world?"

Yes there are. Unfortunately the Communist Party is officially recognized in India. Some of these Marxists live in the US and are supported in creating pressure on the right wing BJP.

Here's a couple of these Marxists Biju Mathew and Vijay Prashad spewing bile about the BJP from the USA.

        http://www.stopfundinghate.org/resources/news/120902WW3Report.htmhttp://pd.cpim.org/2001/march25/march25_biju_vijay.htm

In my opinion the appearance of hate is being created by the Communists and then adapted by the Islamists for their purposes.

        • Posted By: emmarcee @ 12/05/2008 9:01:40 AM

OK , everybody who speaks against the Nazi party of India is a Communist. Have we heard this propaganda before? Buddy, you can choose to live in peace. If you are looking for trouble, it will come to you. and thanks for giving a link to stopthehate site. They need to be recognized for their standing up against you Hindu fanatics. US people still havenot recognized you snakes living in this country pretending to be peaceful citizen while funding terrorosm against minority Chrostians and Muslims and Dalits (the Blacks) of India,

          • Posted By: amit64 @ 12/05/2008 11:33:31 AM

They are not all communists. Communists, Islamists and Evangelists have a common target in the BJP plus the BJP has a lock on the so-called Hindu vote so why the surprise?

And we can see right here how people are unable to comment without resorting to tired European ideology like Nazism to take cheap political potshots.

Bush doctrine says "If a country is even considered as a threat US can launch a pre-emptive invasion". But in this case Pakistan is a well-estabished threat and proven 100s of times. If Pakistan is goign to dance around this India better act on its own to get rid of all the elements that can easily perpetrate in future even if it means launching a war. Sure there will be losses. It is between Democracy vs Dictatorship. All Democratic countries should side with India.

Sorry, but no. You guys just HAD to have nukes, and Pakistan followed suit.

You're on your own. You guys made your bed, now lie in it.

"Sorry, but no. You guys just HAD to have nukes, and Pakistan followed suit."

As regards India having Nukes: It may be helpful if one understands the reason behind it. India has a state of war with China since 1962. So building nuclear weapons makes sense, if your enemy has one.

Pakistan was never the target because destruction of Pakistan can be done with conventional weapons. It just does not justify the R&D expense of a poor nation.

Pakistan built/borrowed the Nuke because it wanted to the country to build the "Islamic" Nuke. (That comes from Pakistani leadership). Other nations and peoples can keep ignoring it - one should be seeing results soon enough. Mumbai is just the appetizer, the main course(s) are yet to come.

It is said that for evil to flourish, all that is required is for good people do nothing. Perhaps that was the point that 'vkarthik @ 12/03/2008 1:20:54 PM' was trying to make. Ignore it, at your peril.

        • Posted By: Doc Howl @ 12/04/2008 2:13:12 PM

I think I'll deal with the peril.

You guys have fought China before, without nukes...yes?

I think I'll deal with the peril.

            Yep. That's your right.
That said, India too has to make her own choices. Being a poorer nation, she has fewer choices. And the choice she makes, may not likeable to everyone. Perhaps it is better to alone and right than be wrong in a company of friends. As you said one has to lie on the bed one makes.
            Lets close this thread.

I hope the families of all the Kashmir terrorist sympathizers in pakistan will be annihilated by the same terrorists which they managed to nurture to a multi headed hydra. Stupid pakis will sing destruction of India even when their own asses are stuffed with grenades by these terrorists. Keep on contributing your hard earned rupees to these monsters and watch your country suffering a slow death or being nuked by combined airpower of India, Israel and NATO when the patience of whole world runs out. Why dont you guys throw acid on the faces of terrorists instead of innocent women. I know, for a paki, a terrorist is a good terrorist as long as he kills KAFIRS. You folks have no idea about the cosmopolitan nature of Indian society and how hard working muslims ,hindus, christians and sikhs are succeeding by coexisting peacefully. Stop hiding your heads inside your asses and learn to be tolerant, ghetto jingoistic pakistani losers.

If any India/Non Indian please try to do our part by boycotting Pakistan & Bagladesh economically. If you live in India, Australia, New Zealand or US, Please Boycott any goods made in Pakistan/Bangladesh. This is what me and my family are going to do till they end their support of terrorism and claim of Kashmir. This is the least we can do in memory of alll those killed in the last 61 years ( since 1947 when India gave its own land to the so called Pakistan so that ther won.t be any more blodd shed). Since the Impotent and incompetent Indian Govt. Won't do anything to the country which is number 1 terrorist state in the world.

      "and claim of Kashmir"....looool......wait..

      1. U.N. Wants a referendum on that issue
      2. Majority of Kashmiris want to secede
      3. majority of those killed "in the ladst 61 years" have been Kashmiri civilians mainly killed by the Indian military.

      What a joke.

        sayyestochess @ 12/02/2008 1:21:24 PM
Almost everything you quoted are incorrect.

        1. Don't hold your breath on the much-publicized UN Referendum. Pakistan has to vacate PoK first AND make such a admission in the UN. It has not happened in the past 60 years - unlikely to happen now.

        2. Most of Kashmiris do NOT want to secede. Kashmiris do not grow enough food. All the food, all vegetables and meat comes from India. Additionally, there are no industries. NONE. Even electric power generation is at the mercy of the Indian Government. Even Muslim Kashmiris know this. The day India comes out Kashmir, and imposes sanctions - they will starve to death.

What abot PoK? PoK does not have Kashmiris. It has Punjabis (i.e. Musharraf's crowd). If Indian Kashmiris go to Pakistan, they will lose their land as well. Starvation is guaranteed.

        3. The Indian Army does kill infiltrators - Kashmiri or otherwise. There is no point in having a Army which does not defend the borders.

Before, Kashmir terrorist attacks, the average Pakistani was better off than the average Indian. Now the tide has turned. They are trapped in the 7th century - while we have moved on.

Yes, what a joke. Pakistani Terrorism will go down in history as one of the greatest miscalculations ever.

Yes, my friend. Its true those reports have been published.

Reuters is a Press-for-Profit organization. All these organizations sold us "WMDs in Iraq" story. Accept it - they sold it and we bought it. What's the proverb? Fool me once - shame on you, Fool me twice - shame on me. Sorry, I am not buying any stories this time.

            Human Rights Watch Report
Yes. According to them - US has at least as many Human Rights violations as Saudi and Libya. If a person were to make this statement, one would normally put that person in a lunatic asylum.

Doc, I don't claim to be a expert in everything. But I know when I am being fed BS. Another thing I know: Blindly following leaders and blindly accepting everything we are told is not the answer. All of us are gifted with intelligence. Let us use this faculty and question our sources.

A for-profit-Press has the motive to hide news and information from you - IF ITS PROFITABLE. These are the weaknesses in ANY democracy. Its upto the citizens to be alert and make sure they are not being taken for a ride.

                  Guess who I believe?

        • Posted By: Doc Howl @ 12/02/2008 4:31:02 PM

So what's the big deal between you two? You both claim the land. You both fight over it every few years, on one level of intensity or another. Before long, it will be rendered worthless (if you don't both nuke each other out of existence in the process, which is by no means impossible).

Why not call it a neutral zone and allow both sides access to it? Both sides would have to divide up the policing, etc, of course, or - even better - police it with mixed units.

So what's the big deal between you two?

OK Doc.. There is a question of perspective. Why do you think you have the answers? You went to Vietnam .. and those under-nourished guys not just beat the French, but somehow beat the greatest technological power on earth! That was not that long ago.

9/11: Where is Bin Ladin? He is over six feet tall. Most of the Asians are far less than that. This guy would stand out like a giant in a land of pygmies. And yet he has eluded the greatest intelligence apparatus on earth!

The affair in Iraq was supposed to last SIX weeks(!). Not to put too fine a point -that does not seem to be going so well.

Tell me, why do you think you have the answers?

The answer is too long. Please read "Beyond Belief" by Naipaul. Naipaul is a Nobel prize winner in Literature. The chapter is called "Pakistan - A Criminal Enterprise" or something like that.

        • Posted By: Doc Howl @ 12/02/2008 1:02:30 PM

So you can't explain what? Or won't?

          • Posted By: Layman @ 12/02/2008 2:28:58 PM

            Ok.. Here is a try.

India is about 10 times bigger. Industrially, we are catching up with the West - but most technologies are homegrown. In some areas it will surpass China - easily. Adjusted figures show that India is fifth largest economy in the world.

Pakistan is a failed state. Citizens of Pakistan often have relatives in India - and the message of prosperity in India, is trickling down to the common Pakistani. The average Pakistani wants to know why he cannot afford the things that his Indian counterpart has. The West can never understand this. For a man who has 3 meals a week, a man who has a meal everyday looks rich. To a Westerner, a half-starved Indian looks about the same as a half-starved Pakistani.

In secular India, many Muslims hold senior positions in the government and the armed forces. In private industry too, there are many Muslim Indians who are successes, not just in India, but also internationally. This gives lie that Pakistan was formed to look after the interests of Muslims - apparently Muslims in secular India do even better. More uncomfortable questions for the ruling class.

Pakistan sees itself as a part of the Muslim Caliphate, not a soveriegn nation. Destruction of secular India and making it a theocratic Islamic state, part of the Caliphate, is the objective - in fact the sole objective. (The idea of a Muslim Caliphate was expressed by one of Pakistan's Prime Minister, long, long before Bin Ladin came on the scene). This xenophobia is intense and generally goes unnoticed by the West. Some of the phrases used are: "We will destroy you completely" - not very different from "We will wipe Israel off from the map".

            That's the background.

Its incorrect to see this just as one attack. It has been going on for some time. The first act of aggression was in Kashmir in 1948. (India and Pakistan got independence in 1947). For the past 3 decades, attacks have been terrorist attacks - situations where the Pakistani Government always wipes its hands clean. There is no formally declared war. There are losses on the Indian side however.

The latest attack is on an icon of India. Psychologically, it would be a bit like the destruction of the ship Mayflower (assuming you still had the original). The anger on the Indian side is understandable. The younger generation in India is immensely confident and focused. It could be a mistake to cross them.

            • Posted By: Doc Howl @ 12/02/2008 2:39:26 PM

Wait. So you expect me to believe that this ridiculous attack was an attempt to *destroy* India?

Looks more like an attempt someone has made to get India and Pakistan to fight.

From a US perspective - maybe. But it was the same perspective that made us think that war in Iraq could end in SIX weeks.
A trillion dollars with no end in sight. Maybe its time to change our perspective.

Finger pointing? Okay identifying the criminals behind this act is finger pointing? How so? Lack of Indian security justifies the act? So if a country lacks in security it is okay to attack them? Some of the responses are ridiculous. Even the best of the best countries have been subjected to terrorism.

Today is December 3rd. On December 3rd, 1971 the Pakistani Army pogrom of innocent Bengali Muslims finally stopped in a land which is now called Bangladesh. Over 3 million Bengali Muslims were killed by the Pakistani Army. Thousands of Muslim women were raped. That is the brave Pakistani Army that the US depends on. A fitting tribute to this genocide is being planned in Dacca, Bangladesh. The world must never forget

dear layman, seriously, you think war isnt a nghtmare? which fantastical world have you been inhabiting? i can hear historians laughing at that.

and pls, it is dillusion to think that there will be one hole or three holes. sorry, if two nuclear armed nations fight, there will be nothing left of both of them when they finish. this isnt about the bigger army or india would have attacked pakistan before this as well. this is about the nuclear arms, the ultimate deterrant on both sides.

as for the china factor, pls, again, which fantastical world is this in which india is ahead of chna? china is the next superpower man. its going to take over from america as the world's largest economy in 5 years, and thats not counting the american recession.

and what the hell is the indian beef with bangladesh? or china? or pakistan? or nepal? or sri lanka? wait.....thats all of india's neighbours isnt it? india is angry with all its neighbours?

Somehow, we have managed thru three wars. Don't worry, we will manage this one too.

As regards our borders: Iam compelled to say most westerners (Americans in particular) are as ignorant of History as they of Geography. Oh God, sorry. You need to go to school to learn that. Sorry, my fault.

the most important thing is this......lets not forget that india and pakistan are two nuclear armed nations with a combined population of 1.3 billion. blaming pakistan can only lead to war. a war between these two countries is the worst nightmare.
secondly, any sensible person can see the loopholes in the security lapses and the story presented to the world so far. there is much more to this story, it will come out soon enough. hopefully, before there are two gigantic holes on the subcontinent map where pakistan and india used to be.

    • Posted By: Layman @ 12/02/2008 12:24:31 PM

Yes, Natasha. "Lets not forget that india and pakistan are two nuclear armed nations..". But in any war, there is only one winner. And war is not a nightmare.

Regarding the gigantic holes that you mentioned: In this war, we are likely to have ONE hole OR THREE holes. Never TWO. I will leave it to you to figure it out.

  • Posted By: shah6 @ 11/29/2008 4:32:15 PM

why is it that everytime something goes wrong in india, pakistan gets the blame. Pakistan is already dealing with its interior problems, in balochistan, in sindh and did we forget the Marriots bombing in islamabad not too long ago. If there is anyone to be blamed is obviously the government , either its US, Pakistan, India or any other or should i say every other country thats facing terrorism.

Yes, I think you are correct. If we fix YOUR internal problems, BOTH of our terrorist problems will go away.

Still won't solve the non-Muslim insurgencies in India Layman. Didnt Assamese rebels just bomb India again today?

        Your thoughts?

      "urinating on the roads.."

Unfortunate, as it may sound, we seem this share this behavior with some European countries - Italy and Greece.
Aren't these countries the foundation of all Western Civilization??

India is WAYYYYY behind in modernization.

"The younger generation in India is immensely confident and focused. It could be a mistake to cross them. "

You must be talking about the rich ones. Please GUY. there are still people urinating in the middle of the street in broad daylight!!

Latin America is modernizing faster than India.
India is a first class toilet. .................

India. Who cares? The Chinese already own 25% of Gupta land and they could own the rest, but they don't want it............

"OBAMA "HAS HIS DREAM TEAM""(eddiewhere 2008).. I am surprise that no one has used this term. I am sure I will hear it tomorrow. OBAMA HAS SELECTED HIS DREAM TEAM. THIS TEAM HAS ALL STAR CREDENTIALS. EACH OF THEM ARE HALL OF FAMERS. HILLARY, GATES, RAHM.
HOPEFULLY, THIS DREAM TEAM WILL KEEP THEIR EYES ON THE REAL THREAT RUSSIA AND CHINA. These two countries have already launched a very successful CYBER WAR against AMERICA. They are able to spy on our networks and steal our technological secrets and our patented software.
RUSSIA, INDIA AND CHINA ARE THE SUPERPOWERS OF THAT SIDE OF THE WORLD. They are the key to a multinational strategy. Managing these realtionships is like walking a tight rope(eddiewhere 2008). China and India are always at odds and have a delicate relationship to say the least. I know ZaKaria wrote an article on this relationship six months ago. He needs to write another one.
Another situation that needs to be monitored closely is ORGANIZED CRIME IN EASTERN EUROPEAN COUNTRIES, ESPECIALLY when it comes to cyber crime and nuclear weapons. These Eastern European countries are a potential conduit for passing NUKES to terrorists.

These Terrorists will be based in the Five MUSLIM breakaway REpublics in Central ASIA( Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistanan) . They can potentially form an alliance with China, who has a long history of strained relationships with INDIA. To the MUslims India is an enemy and a traitor. Remeber how Hitler rose to power, a depressed economy in EUROPE. THESE REPUBLICS in Central Asia have all the same elements.. Russia and CHina will form an alliance based on their mutual FRICTION with INDIA(WHO IS CHALLENGING TO BE THEY PREMIER SUPERPOWER IN ASIA).

LOOSE NUCLEAR WEAPONS IN THE FORMER SOVIET REPUBLICS IS A BIG PROBLEM BECAUSE ORGANIZED CRIME GROUPS IN EASTERN EUROPE CAN GAIN ACCESS to them and sell them to terrorists.
THE ALLIANCE BETWEEN THE 5 MUSLIM STATES IN CENTRAL , AND CHINA IS A Big Threat.

"OBAMA IS NOW THE WORLD"S FIRST PRESIDENT" eddiwhere 2008.. CAN HE SUCCESSFULLY MANAGE RELATIONSHIPS WITH RUSSIA AND CHINA INORDER TO PREVENT THESE FIVE MUSLIM REPUBLICS FROM SLIPPING DEEPER AND DEEPER INTO ECONOMIC DEPRESSION. ONCE AGAIN REMEMBER HOW HITLER ROSE TO POWER A DEPRESSED ECONOMY IN GERMANY WHO WAS TORCHERED ECONOMICALLY AFTER WORLD WAR ONE BY THE ALLIES RUSSIA, FRANCE AND BRITAIN. RUSSIA IS DOING THE SAME TO ITS FORMER REPUBLICS UKRAINE ect.....

OBAMA IS LIKE THE COACH OF THE DREAM TEAM(BASKETBALL) TRYING TO MAKE SURE THAT HE HAS A PLAN TO MAKE JORDON, BIRD AND MAGIC WORK TOGETHER AS ONE FORCE TO THEIR FULL POTENTIAL. OR LEBRON, KOBY AND PAUL PIERCE. I AM SURE HE CAN AND WILL DO JUST FINE AND AMERICA WILL SOON BE THE ENVY OF THE WORLD AGAIN.

OBAMA HAS HIS DREAM TEAM AND ALL THE TOOLS FOR A MUCH NEEDED GLOBAL STRATEGY.

P.S. REMEMBER BARAK YOUR BLACKBERRY HAS ALREADY BEEN HACKED.

India does not have any system at all. Everything is done on adhoc basis. It is therefore not a big surprise that a few youngsters can create such havoc in Mumbai. The way things are done in India is like the plumbing work in the Indian multi-storey apartment. Read the book on Bombay by Sekutu Mehta, then you will know how India is managed. The late response by the Indian Commandoes to the resue is the most rapid response by Indian standards. The India intel is also a mockery of the intelligensia world! The whole of India is pathetic. I am not surprised that India is just a sitting duck for any kind of terrorists! But the people of Mumbai should be very grateful because the mayhem was only caused by the gunmen, this is truely remarkable if not a miracle that the Indian security forces managed to avoid more disaster since they are famous in creating more destruction in their rescue missions!

"It is therefore not a big surprise that a few youngsters can create such havoc in Mumbai. "

Yes Mohammed, that's true. But also see how little the Terrorists achieved. They came to kill 5000, could not get even 500.
They were heavily armed and had years of specialized training both Pakistan and overseas. The last terrorist had a loaded AK-47, but he was literally beaten into submission by a bunch of bystanders. All that training was useless.

Now that he is in prison, they will use drugs and make him remember every minute of his life. Both Pakistan and India know this. Pakistan will kill each and every known acquaintance of his to cover their tracks; India will do the same when they have an encounter.

All said and done, I think the sponsors of this misadventure, will lose about as many men as they have killed. Very, very expensive operation.
