Israelis and Palestinians seem to realize that a strong international presence will be critical to any deal.

I believe that the only solution is change in policies of US. The whole world is suffering economic and other consequences of US policies. We should change our basic policy of supporting wars all over the world. We can reestablish our strategy and become the good superpower of the world again with support of nations all over this world.
Please read the interesting discussion of Time with Avrum Burg, the scion of one of Israel's founding families (His father was the deputy speaker of the first Knesset, and Burg himself later became speaker of the legislature, and a member of Israel's cabinet) :

Would NATO respond with the same kinds of preventive raids carried out by the Israelis today?
I do not think that what is the Israeli are doing todya is "preventive raids". It is a genocide war against the innocent civilians in Gaza and a continuous humilation by the occupying agressors with the support of the USA and the Europeans and some Arabs pubbet and corrupt regimes. The Westerners are hating the Aarbs and Muslims becasue of a historical actions and it is a continuation to the Crusade awrs as Prseident once had said that openly.

"but remember in the war of 1973 we egyptians beat israel despite your great help to israel"

What? No you didn't. You got your *** handed to you. LOL.

Your comments prove the lack of maturety in the Arab world. You blame everyone else for the failures of your government and your society. How do you even know how to work the internet?. You people would still be living in tents if we didn't show you how to get the oil out of the ground. Egypt has a vast wealth and yet most of it's people live in horrible conditions. When you get your country straight then talk about the West. By the way Egypt never won any war againat Isreal, your government lied to you

People who have nothing relevant to say tend to type entire rants in capital letters as if that will bestow some significance on it. Others are quick to make empty and often incorrect assumptions about those with whom they disagree. I am a life-long Republican and take strong offense to being called the "D" word. Finally, we all can take comfort in knowing that Bill Clinton says it's not the fault of the Israeli government because we've seen him to be one of the most truthful and honest men we know. The rest of your rantings are too far off the subject for me even to bother with. Save for to say they are incorrect.

Uninformed indeed. In point of fact, the first one to break the ''promises''of Camp David was Arafat. Bill Clinton himself admits this. [''My Life'']. He returned ''in triumpth'' to Gaza stating that he ''rejected the accord'' before thousands of cheering Palestinians. This particular gangster was seeing to it that the status quo would remain in order to effect the continuance of US and EU funding that went straight into the pockets of PLO bagmen and thence to Zurich banks to the tune of over 600 million dollars. Perpetual war or the threat of it would keep the dough rolling in. Thus, would Arafat, in one of his last major roles, launch the Second Intifada in 2000. FORBES Magazine estimates the widow Arafat as ''one of the worlds richest women'',now enconsed in Paris. [and Gaza, one of the worlds poorest regions].

LIKEITIS doesn't realize that the Bush administration hasn't paid our dues to the United Nations in years -- we owe them over $2 billion. So "we" aren't paying for anything and haven't for eight years now despite that "we" have been calling the shots at the UN -- and making all the wrong calls, like authorizing the invasion of Iraq.

    • Posted By: brydges @ 12/03/2008 3:21:54 PM

No administration has paid UN dues, and if you read the article you would relize he was talking about NATO. Typical uninformed Democrat using any excuse to blame Bush.

We all know that if the government of Israel truly wanted PEACE it would have kept the promises it made in the agreement made with Arafat during the Clinton administration. The best solution might be to make everyone leave Israel or Occupied Palestine or whatever we call it. If neither the Palestinians nor the Israelis are allowed to live there maybe they can stop fighting. I'm tired of all of them. Back in 1948 when they went into Palestine and murdered all those people and took their land the world should said NO. Perpetual war is bad for the whole world.

Ominous signs in seeing how Obamas Israel-Palestinian policy will be conducted are presented by a coterie of brokers who have not been entirely even-handed in pursuing just solutions, including Brzheninski,Lake, and now,the under-the-radar return of Samantha Power, whose invective towards the Israelis was already a matter of note during her time at Harvard. Any or all of these people could push for a NATO presence backed by the new administration. The risk here is that in judging the past performance of NATO, especially during the Lebanon War of 2006, Obamas Middle East cred would be put on the line.

And another point that I'd like to make, Mr Peraino can devise whatever "Peace Deal" he wants, but unless it provides strong security guarantees for Israel, this "Peace Deal" is simply NOT viable.

  • Posted By: Ilia_Prahov @ 12/03/2008 11:19:57 AM

To sum up what the author of this article proposes, he wants to create an independent Palestinian state, then to violate its sovereignty by sending in a powerful US-led occupation force. Kevin Peraino reckons that NATO troops will be nessesary to protect Israel from Palestinian terrorists. There two questions that arise immediately:

First, what makes you think that NATO troops will be efficient in dealing with Palestinian terrorists. We can how NATO performs in Iraq and Afganistan - they are disastrously ineffective!

Second, presumably, NATO troops won't stay in Palestinian territories forever. At some point they'll leave, and a Palestinian sequrity force is supposed to take their place. Now, who can provide guarantees, that this Palestinian force will be efficient at containing Palestinian terrorists?? What are the odds that this new-born Palestinian state will turn into the new Lebanon, and a breeding ground for terrorist groups like Hezbolla??? Does "Obama peace plan" provide for such a possibility???
There are many questions that need to be answered.

The author starts off by making a fool of himself -- "Oom, Schmoom" was the famous line of Golda Meir, not David Ben-Gurion -- and only gets more ridiculous from there. Where's the news here? There are no real negotiations going on, only between Olmert, who is resigning in disgrace on his way to the pokey, and Mahmoud Abbas whose 'presidency' is not supported by any legal vote, constitution or parliament. Everything is 'may' and 'may not' and is basically thrown together from a few out-of-context quotes by extinghushed lights such as Scowcroft and Brzezinski, both known for their lifelong antagonism to Israel's sense of self-preservation.

adwy STFU this is not a flame column. and I believe sending nato troops to westbank will be disaster because we need them in europe just in case russia decides to invade urkraine because same things she did to georgia is happening today in urkraine. Nato dont get involved military in west bank because it be anothe quagmire that united states be sucked into and that be 3 wars on 3 fronts now looks like Iranians win for sure on that since they fund and run and supply hamas and that bitch hezbollah which some european countries need to cut all ties from them because they are terrorist plain and simple they represent will of iran not their own kind. germany needs to shut down hezbollah tv station in their own country no more appeasement because appeasement only fuels the aggressor same thing with russia appease her and there be another world war soon.

hamas and fath ur new joke americans and europes to avoid living in peace with us ....so *** u all

  • Posted By: bighappy @ 12/02/2008 9:12:11 PM

Are you serious, Mr Peraino? What year is now? Arafat is dead, Israel Great Wall has been built. Palestinians are in the middle of civil war, Israel did not experience terrorism from West Bank for couple years. Why to send NATO to West Bank? To protect remnants of Hamas from Abbas? NATO troops will not serve any purpose there, except being target (remember Lebanon?) and probably sourve of money and even weapon. Sending them in Gaza will be much more useful.

Can someone explain why I should give a damn about either the Israelis or the Palestinians?

  • Posted By: Repubssuck @ 12/02/2008 3:20:12 PM

Is this another way of saying Israel needs to be checked before real talks of truce can begin? Would this question be prudent if i wasn't using a blog name instead of my own?
