My impression of Thailand, at least since the early 1970s, when I was in the region with the Marine Corps, is that it is a oligarchic/fascist state, where land-owning, educated (and possibly ethnic) elites pretty much run the country as they please, with a veneer of democracy pasted over the works for appearances (but which the military will rip away whenever it becomes a problem for the ruling elite). It is a kleptocracy whoever happens to be, or seems to be, in charge at any given moment...and half the time when the "common people" do finally get riled up and speak out, its because some demagogue among the quarreling elites has told them a bunch of lies to stir them to his own support.

Something good is unlikely from a country with mickey-mouse government that allows serious prostitution and corruption; nasty pirates brutalizing the gulf; and monkey court system hypocritically prosecuting foreigners with death penalties for "drug offenses"
