Why isnt anyone addressing the Trade Deficit?
Stop the imports!
Why isnt anyone addressing the Trade Deficit?
Stop the imports!
Because there are experts who believe they are not a problem. Besides, the real problem is not that we have trade deficits, it's the fact that Americans are borrowing money to fund it. (And China's artificial currency).
I am all for the LOAN. But, as I watched the hearings today, it made me think...How is it that the banks got 700 billion dollars of FREE money, with no plan or being raked over the coals? Yet, the auto industry asks for a LOAN to keep millions of people working and our economy from going further down the tubes, and they have a million hoops to jump through. Plus, they have to deal with idiots who do not realize their job might also be terminated without this loan. As one of the smarter Senators asked today... "Are the ones who shower before work, more important than the ones who shower after work???"
NO Bailout! I think the best thing for them is to reorganize under Chapter 11 bankruptcy and break the death grip of the unions. American car autoworkers are vastly overpaid compared to other autoworkers in this country. This cost is either passed on in the price of the car or they have to cut corners to make it... resulting in an unreliable car with poor resale value. Sound familiar?
How can you say that the American autoworker is greatly overpaid? I don't think $14.00 an hour is overpaid. What do you make? Let me decide if you are worthy of your salary. Are you one that works in the subsidized foreign transplants in the south. It sounds like you're a little jealous.
Let them fail....I despise modern American cars, have done so all my life. Oh, they were good until about 1957, but after that....all downhill. The Japanese, Germans and Italians have wiped the floor with them for 3 generations of cars. Let them fail - and good riddance. I HATE their ****** trucks masquerading as cars, so that I , who drive an ordinary car, can;t see over their **** ugly noses at traffic light intersections. Good riddance to disgusting rubbish. And may the unions rot in hell - a union aimed at maintaining salaries in line with other production is one thing - but I am amazed that you crazy Yanks have sponsored Raw Unadulterated Communism in your Capitalist back yard !
You seem to be enjoying the fruits of organized labor. Do you have healthcare, a 401K, weekends off, decent working hours and conditions? Your comments are appauling!!!!!!!
I say loan them the money as long as a person from the govt can be present to see the money spent. These companies have to be allowed to rebound. If these companies fail its not just them that would suffer. All of these manufacturers have suppliers. From the paint that goes on these cars to the very wheels that they sit on. The ripple effect from the failure of these automakers would be devastating nation wide.
How on earth could this be happening? Plain delusion?
Last month, it was $25 billion. This month, it is $34 billion. Next month, it will be $__ billion -- fill in the blank please.
Suppose all the huge corporates were to follow the example of the Big Three, what would happen to the US economy? How not to expedite recession (never mind if it is modern or not)?
The CEOs had been ridiculed in the Congress because of their excessive yet unacceptable extravagance before. This time to polish up a bit of their tarnished image, they drove to Washington in hybrids, perhaps hoping against hope that they may win some sympathy from the congressmen, the media and public.
What price human greed and fraudulence? The ultimate victims are the ordinary people, the honest taxpayers.

You are buying a new car and deciding between 2 blue sedans. The one that costs $27,000 has all-wheel-drive and will go 100,000 but will need the following repairs done in that time (many under warranty): a new transmission, a new radiator, a new wiper switch; new computer; new fuel injectors and the oil pan gasket replaced twice. The blue sedan that costs one costs $26,000 does not have all-wheel-drive and it will go 100,000 miles and need no repairs at all. Which sedan is the Dodge Avenger and which is the Honda Accord?
Of course you are right on the money, feralpigeon.
I have to say that it makes me angry deep down to think about differences in quality like this. There is not one benefit that US producers have not had and squandered. Stability. Good workers. Good organizational minds for the early part of the industry's history. Access to natural resources. Cheap oil. Military contracts. Tariffs and other regulation and legislation. The support of the most powerful government on earth. All wasted. All wasted. It has come to this. Begging on the steps of the capitol for enough money to make it through the month. It is a disgrace.
In the USSR, they used to force people to buy domestically produced goods that were very shabby and clunky. Quality was bad. Service was bad. But people had no choice. Their government WAS the auto company. Their government was the only investor and the only manager. For decades, they wasted billions of dollars in capital and never ever reached parity with western companies. I will never forget showing a Russian person my 64 Buick Riviera in about 1985. She was amazed by the power windows.
Falling behind in a race with the Russians is something that a lot of American people can understand.
With the stroke of a pen, bailing out Detroit would put us about 30 or 40 years behind.
We know it is Honda Accord. But remember, repairing anything on Japanese car is twice as more expensive in USA. Japanese cars fail later, but as soon as they do - count your money.
Socialize the debt and privatize the wealth- what the hell do we call this sort of economic model?
Is it capitolistic socialism is it socialistic democracy? What ever it is its a bunch of plutocratic garbage!
No one is waching out for the common people- there losing their houses by the millions and no one says a word! "The U.S is the best country in the world" yeah sure! I love our nation its the leaders Im having trouble with! Greedy double standard bastards!
Decades of ignoring consumer complaints about substandard autos and notorious Friday/Monday manufactured lemons have finally come home to roost. There is no amount of money thrown at the Detroit folks that can turn around the public image of overpriced autos that do not meet the Japanese and German automaker's standards. Furthermore, the resentment of autoworker's incredible wage/benefit packages and the stranglehold of the UAW, negate any sympathy from the public sector using taxpayer dollars for a bailout.
I just dont understand why we continue to pour money into all these financial and investment firms that did such a good job at screwing alot of american people. Why not give it back to the taxpayer. Even if we given each taxpayer back 50,000 per household,we could have paid down our debt and could have stimulated the economy(even buy a car). It probably wouldnt have cost 700 billion dollars.
with all the money that has been handed out to banks and investment firms why didnt we just give the money to the taxpayers of this country(about 50,000 to 75,000) middle and lower middle class who could have paid off thier debts and put the money back into the economy to stimulate it. It probalbly would have been a lot cheaper than what has been done so far with better results.
Ok now that the big 3 aren't going to get free money how do we stop the Wallstreet bailout. No oversight and these Companies are using your money not to help the Country but to take the money and run. Wallstreet firms were too big and we can't let them fail and what do they do with the money is buy other firms?
And - There are two white 2004 sedans parked side by side in the mall parking lot. Both of them have 90K miles on them. Both are in "excellent" condition. One of them cost $18,000 new and is now worth $6000. The other one cost $15,000 new and is now worth $8500. Which sedan is the Chevy Malibu and which one is the Toyota Corolla?
I have driven company cars for 31 years. Makes included Chevys,Buicks, Oldmobiles, Fords, Chryslers. Best car for me was Buick. Worst was Chevy Lumina. Personal makes I have actually owned include Ford, Chevy, Dodge, vW. Worst I owned was the VW, the best I've ever owned was Ford F-150 pick-ups and the Hyundai I'm driving now.
Ok: There are two green 2004 mini vans parked next to each other in the mall parking lot. Both of them have 85K on them. The one on the left needs nothing at all and the one on the right needs a transmission and a new motor to raise the window in the driver side door. Which is the Honda Odyssey and which is the Dodge Caravan?
I have driven
Where do some of you get your facts? What do you honestly think a UAW worker makes? What lucrative contracts are you talking about? Those are long gone. Retirees are no longer getting their benefits covered by the Big 3. They are being taken careof for their many, many years of service, by the UAW. Seems like people are jealous, that there are still companies that are loyal to their long time employees.
I wonder how many of you know that most foreign imports are subsidized. That's right for years Japan intervened in the currency market to keep the yen weak. (Estimates of the impact of this subsidy generally range from $3,000 to $14,000 per car.) This is like Uncle Sam helping one of the Big 3, by paying for the sunroof, alloy wheels, remote start and premium stereo on your American made car! Another little known fact... the foreign transplants that build in the south are subsidized by the their government and then they get HUGE tax breaks from these southern states with no state or local taxes paid for sometimes up to 10 years! They get the land for free or for such a minimal price that General Motors, Ford and Chrysler could only dream about. How can the Big 3 compete on such an uneven playing field?
And, for "tumbleweed97" hate to break the news to you, but if the Big 3 fail, there won't be a door number 3 to open! Everyone, including YOU, could be on the unemployement line!!!! This could be the next great DEPRESSION!!!
Currency manipulation allegations are just not true. Japan has had interest rates of less than 1% for about two decades now and STILL cannot force the yen lower.
Chinese renminbi and other currencies are pegged to the dollar, which might be what you are referring to.
Japanese companies were given incentives to locate plants in the US. That is true. But so what? Those areas in Alabama, Mississippi, and other areas in the south bid against each other to get those jobs, and they got them. GM could have put plants there, but didn't.
It is a moot point, really. Detroit is not failing because of competition. Detroit is failing because it did not compete. It continued producing cars that nobody wanted while Japanese manufacturers focused on efficiency, reliability, quality and oil price trends. Detroit could have done the same, but it didn't.
You just don't get it. You are saying things that are not true. Stop telling us what you saw on the news and do some research. teachac1 is exactly right.
As far as the Japanese manufacturers having a better car is a joke. The things you like so much on those cars were designed by the big 3. Facts are a great thing. You might want to look it up. The Japanese cars are also made cheap; I don't think you have seen a Japanese car hold its own when it comes to an accident. I have seen first hand how a civic falls apart when a truck hits it. The kid in the civic died. Saw a similar accident whit a Malibu and the driver walked away. These are the facts; People like you are a joke. You are the ones that hurt America, telling everyone lies, un-American. I will always support America and not worry about saving $25.00 a month for a Japanese car.
Currency manipulation by Japan isn't true? Check this out...

Please spare me. The title of the site kind of reveals a little bias, don't you think?
Let me suggest some common sense.
Would the government of Japan, assuming first that it even COULD manipulate the yen, make the yen lower just to sell a few cars in the US? To do so, remember that the prices of ALL imports to Japan would be more expensive.
Japan has NO natural resources, so the price of oil, almost all food, electronic components, EVERYTHING would increase for Japanese consumers just so they could sell a few more cars in the US. I think you overestimate the importance of Detroit, the Japanese government, a few percentage points in the exchange rate, and frankly, your own critical thinking skills.
Hmm. People calling people un-American. Some people want to spark hatred instead of just acknowledging what is as plain as the nose on your face.
Patriotism is the last refuge to which a scoundrel clings.
It is very sad that so many people aren't for the LOAN. Yes, it is a loan. Too many people are only worried about themselves. They don't understand the big picture. I am a school teacher with a master's degree, as well as a proud card carrying union member. Unions do not ruin America. They are what protect the middle class jobs and give workers a voice. It is easy for some to say don't lend them the money, but those are the people that don't realize how catastrophic it would be to our country's economy. For every one American autoworker, there are 10 additional non-related jobs attached to it. These can be accountants, secretaries, printers, truck drivers, railroad crew members, restaurant employees, etc. We are all connected in the food chain of jobs!!! How could we afford to have that many people unemployed? The US manufacturing jobs are the backbone of our country. If we let them fail, we will all fall. .GM alone employs more Americans than all foreign automakers combined. Ford employs as many Americans in just one of its plants as Hyundai and VW together employ nationwide. There have been estimates that a collapse of the American Car Companies would cost up to 3 million Americans their jobs and devastate the economy in terms of social security, taxes and transfer payments, a loss of $60 billion in the first year alone by the U.S. Government. Don't forget these companies pay a lot of local, state and federal taxes, which go for schools, roads etc. Without them, be ready to pay higher taxes to recoup this loss. This is truly a crisis that will touch everyone! These companies, unlike their foreign competitors, have always been there for America in time of crisis - 911, Katrina etc. Not it is our turn to help them out.
Maybe your employment statistics mean that American car companies need to make more and better cars with not as many workers.
It's hard not to feel for the workers involved, however. But the management is just to dumb to live.
Very well said teach. It should also be said that the Foreign tranplants with all their local tax abatements aren't paying for much of anything. Not to mention their profits are flying out of this country so fast it makes your head spin and wallet empty out. Their employers can make a living, but the country cannot survive like that.
Their profits are invested in Treasury bonds. The Japanese and Chinese are investing in America. Perhaps that bothers you more than having them invest in their own countries?
Do any of us deserve a mortgage LOAN on our homes? It's not about deserving money. It's a loan. To be paid back. With interest. Does Citibank DESERVE it's BAILOUT?? Not to be repaid, no interest earned? I'm so sick of hearing the media and American people not supporting an industry that drives (literally) so many other industries that make this country what we are. Do you think if Nissan were going down that Japan would just sit back and watch? Probably not....they'd probably do what they can to help them survive. Because Nissan is Japan. Just as the Big 3 are the US.
How many people sitting in Congress drive American cars? If they don't, they shouldn't get to vote on whether or not this country survives. Also, the millions of jobs that will be lost if the Big 3 go down...well, Congress, those are millions of re-election votes you may not get....think about this decision long and hard before you just write the Big 3 off as a lost cause. Give them the money, take the millions in interest you will "earn" off of the loan. Let this country survive.
Ooops. Probably the wrong example.
Actually, Nissan was having trouble a few years ago.
The Japanese government did nothing.
GM bought a major stake in it.
Problem solved.
And, uh, no. ... Nissan is not Japan. Japan has many independent auto manufacturers, none of which require or receive government aid. Why do Americans assume that if an American fails, it must be because of some trickery or unfairness? A little more competence goes a long way toward making life more "fair".
Not true again. Japan did help. If the big 3 go down 1 in 13 jobs will be affected immediately in America. Check the facts McLovinB. You don't seem to look for facts, just news reports. If those jobs go down how long till it reaches you. The people can't get auto loans. The dealers have the same amount of traffic; it just can't get the people the loans. And the big 3 is asking for a loan not a hand out. They pay it back with interest. No bank is going to pay it back. This should be a no brainer. We make money off of this.
How did Japan help? Please be specific. I say that they did not, and really, let me assure you that I would know.
The burden of proof is on you sir, because you made the assertion first.
I see alot of people blaming the big 3 for building trucks and suv's in defiance of the rest of the world and that's what got them in this situation. Have you ever wondered how GM was the leading seller in the WORLD without ine car in the top 5 in sales. It's because we were all buying trucks and suv's instead of cars. The japanese had no choice but to focus on fuel efficient cars, they had no chance in competing with the US in truck and suv sales. Also, who is going to make a truck big enough for contractors to tow their equipment (Tundra doesn't count only towes 10k)? What is going to keep the Japanese auto industry from mutualy raising prices now that there is no competition in the US auto market (German cars don't count already twice as expensive)
you're kidding right? The Titan and Tundra are the state of the art in pickuop trucks. the ford does very well and so does Dodge but don't compare to quality or reliabilty or quality to either. If you think the Japanese are stuck with only gas efficient cars, you better take a look at the Cambry and the Lexus. both of these makes have been trading places at the top of the best seller listfor several years. don't blame the American Car guys? Don't blame them for what? Making an inferior vehicle that no one wants? what's better buying an american car that maybe will last 5 years or 50K and be worthless at trade in or buying a toyota that will last 10 years and 100K and will be worth something at trade in. What's better buying a maintenance nightmare that will leave you stranded or a reliable car that won't let you down/ The argument is false on costs also. If you outfitted the Chevy with all of the Standard equipment on the Cambry, it would caos as much or more. I'm a former union Rep. myself and would love to be able to say we make the best Vehicles. We all know it 's just not even close to the truth. get the costs down and we can compete.
The technology that Toyota and Nissan have was taken from the big 3. Check your facts. I have had a Chevy with 90,000 miles on it and have had no problems. I have friends that own Toyota Tundra and Nissan Titan and they have twice as many problems. The technology that they have was first on the American product. I know you???re not a former rep because you would know these things and you would know that the Chevy has more standard equipment on it than most other models. The base package has more standards. Most of the foreign cars don't even have a warranty. No roadside assistance, no courtesy transportation. You are trying to blind people with your lies. And if you were a union Rep. you would also know that most of the parts on the Nissan and Toyota are the same as the big 3. I have many contacts in the auto industry that would beg to differ with your comments. They work for Toyota and Nissan.
The argument is really still beside the point.
These large trucks and vans were being marketed to soccer moms and urban drivers just to make them profitable for GM. They were the mainstay of GM, not a novelty product like they were for Japanese manufacturers.
GM had to license or purchase vehicles from Nissan and Suzuki to serve customers who wanted more fuel efficient cars. GM went waaaay too far down the wrong road in terms of estimating the needs of American and foreign markets. As in most businesses, if you make mistakes consistently and do not pay attention to customers' needs, you fail. Why should GM be different.
But specifically... you are saying Chevy sells cars based on a warranty, roadside assistance, and courtesy transportation? How about not NEEDING a warranty or other assistance? I would think that would be a lot more preferred.
