To any and all conservative Christians fighting against gay rights on Biblical grounds: LAWS BASED ON THE BIBLE ARE AGAINST THE FIRST AMENDMENT, specifically the Establishment clause.

If you are attempting to write Biblical laws into the U.S. legal system, you are in violation of Constitutional principles. You are acting in a way that is utterly unpatriotic, as well as genuinely illegal.

It's worrisome to me to watch so many people trying to "defend American principles" when they don't understand what those principles are and do not understand Constitutional law. To anyone reading this - I urge us all to uphold the separation of Church and State. Vigorously oppose any and all laws instituted on religious grounds. We all need to stand up and recognize that there are many ways to have a decent, loving, and fulfilling life!!!!

Don't Believe this story. I find that just the oppoiste is true, from talking all my friends all over the country.
This is just another leftist slant to the news.
Trust me ,poll your friends and make your own judgement.

    • Posted By: Vigilance @ 12/06/2008 9:41:52 AM

You really have no conception that "your friends" don't constitute a viable sample population, do you?

Did you ever stop to think that maybe you don't talk to people who disagree with your views on this?

I don't personally know anyone who's in favor of Prop 8. But at least I recognize that - obviously - there are a whole lot of people who don't think the same way I and my circle of acquaintances do.

This is part of the problem, I think - a lot of the people against gay rights don't consider people who are or who think differently than them to be worthy of humane treatment, or even worthy of acknowledging their existence...

Sad to say, after 35 yrs of being together and one of us in our 70's...at the hardest times of our lives, we may be in legal trouble because of not having the protections of a civil contract. The religious part is up to the person and his church...the rest comes under 'render unto Cesar...' (Luke 20:25)...what is fair about that?

michaelangel7 This is all dealt with comprehensively by the Metropolitan Community Christian Church and another site you should look at - bridges-across. If the word 'homosexual' appears in your bible then it is a mistranslation by a homophobe. In ancient Greek and Hebrew, there was no word for a homosexual. This word first appeared in 1869 in the German pamphlet by the Austrian-born novelist Karl-Maria Kertbeny & the classification was defined by the German psychiatrist Richard Freiherr von Krafft-Ebing in his 1886 work Psychopathia Sexualis.

I've been on 'chat fights' with your ilk before. You never listen, and cannot think for yourself. You persist in resorting to religious dogma without ever questioning a single word of it, unless it inconveniently applies to yourself, and then suddenly we get "oh that law only applies to the Hebrews".

This is all about winning for you, your desire to appear superior to others in a minority with limited capacity to defend ourselves, It has nothing to do with truth.

You can copy and paste all the biblical quotations you like, I know them all by heart.

Over and Out for me. Goodbye.

Jesus words in the New Testament Mathew 5:17 says "Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill. verse 18 says "For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled." So Jesus himself says the laws of the Old Testament still apply.
I only believe the Bible. Just because you can find a web site that claims to be Christian which is tolerant to homosexuality, it doesn't make the claim to Christianity true. Jesus says many at Judgment Day will say I did such and such in your name - His response will be "I never knew you."
And just so we're clear - I'm not chat fighting. I'm responding to your statements. Was I supposed to "Shut up and put up" rather than respond?
Your anger is displaced.. I am included in the "Sinners" category. I never singled out homosexuality as the only sin to be punished. However, I have asked Jesus Christ into my heart and asked God to forgive me of the many sins that I have committed - too many to list here. If you do the same, you would be a True Believer too. I'm not condemming you - I'm pointing you to salvation in Jesus Christ.
I cannot think for myself - I am a slave to Jesus Christ - I must obey Him and His Word. You can't know all the bible quotations by heart - your responses show this. Stop lying to yourself (deceiving yourself) - you know you are a sinner and you must respond to the Holy Spirit's prompting - which is the guilty, angry feeling you have - it isn't me, He's trying to get your attention. Respond to Him!!!

Your proselytising hasn't changed my view, and serves only to further alienate others. You never quoted anything JC said about homosexuals and merely copied and pasted (again) from the Gospels. 4 billion people ain't heard your version, including millions of them who are homosexual. Obviously these homosexuals are far better off never hearing your version of the Word, and the rest of us are far better off in 'Hell' where our gay supportive friends, familes, astronomers whom the Chuch burned at the stake and the other billions of homosexuals throughout the ages who chose reason over bigotry. Your false syllogisms and straw man arguments show you are ill-equipped to engage in a rational discussion. You make statements about God from your version of a book knowing full well that no intervention can occur to contradict your unprovable claims.

No way do I want to share a place in the sky with such a holier than thou one-dimensional creature as you, no matter how well you may play the harp.

As already implied (Over and Out) I'll let you have the last word, unlike yourself, I have more pressing things to do that involve a career and family. I'll go with Jarrell's comments - he makes far more sense.

    >Jesus himself says the laws of the Old Testament still apply.

How much of Levitical law do YOU live by? What rules have you decided are, and are not relavent for today? What about Paul's teaching that the Law separates us from grace? How many other elements of the Old Testament which were once held by the church are now not practiced today? Should we continue to subjugate women? Should we punish for inter-ractial marriage? Should we again allow slavery? These were all advocated by the church as being part of God's plan. What about Jesus own words when He said that loving God and loving your neighbor as yourself fulfills THE LAW and the prophets?

    >So Jesus himself says the laws of the Old Testament still apply.

How much of Leviticus do YOU follow? How many rules have you decided don't apply for today? How do you answer where Paul says that the Law separates us from grace?

I would like to see the demographics of those polled. I would guess they concentrated on the SAN FRANCISCO area. This is just more lunatic left wing garbage that Newsweek is so proud of reporting. Say, Newsweek, how come all your "ACE" "journalists" end up on lunatic Keith Olbermann's show so often?

I don't hate the people, I hate the sin of homosexuality. If you think things are rough now with this country(USA), wait and see how bad it will get in the future. The more this country turns away from God and the more this country accepts sinful ways, the more bad things are going to happen to this country. Just read the book of Revelations and see what will happen. You may laugh at this now. I pray everyday for this country and the people of this country. Please accept Jesus Christ as your Savior and you will know what true happiness really is. Remember hate the Sin, Not the person!!! Yes it is wrong to have sex with one of the same sex. It is wrong to have sex without being married. The People have spoken and have voted down same sex marriage. That should say it all. But the way this country has become, accepting homosexual ways. It is so sad in alot of cases people just pass off and accept murder, violent crimes like rape, abuse of little children like it is nothing wrong with it. It gets worse and worse every year. People would just a soon spit on you than to say hello to you. I am not saying everybody is like that. But, there is alot more like that than ever before. This country has been so wonderful and great, and successful for over 232 years with God. Now God has been taken out of the schools and look how things have gotten so bad in the school system. America don't let satan rule you and this country. If you don't believe me that true happiness is with Jesus Christ, just Try it and see for yourself. Don't take my word for it. You think your happy and content now, Invite Jesus Christ into your heart and you will be amazed!!! Yes I have done alot of bad things in my past that I thought was fun. I have sinned in my life. But, now Jesus Christ is my Savior. I have never been happier in my life. God Bless You all, Allan

Gay marriage in the united States is a foregone conclusion. It is merely a matter of time.

I believe you are right, scytherius. I just hope it happens soon. I'd like to get married while I'm fairly young.

New Testament 1Corinthians 6:9-10 states "Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolater, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, [verse 10] nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God."
DWMUSIC - don't read the line between the first and last lines, since all the truth about homosexual behavior is "between the lines".

michaelangel7 Here we go again - the unthinking, unreasoning, unquestiong fundamentalists are coming out of the woodwork again. List for us all the things that Jesus Christ said specifically on the subject of homosexual orientation, homosexual marraige, transgender and transsexuality, and lesbianism. I'll save you the time. There isn't any. Wouldn't you think that if God were really troubled about our homosexual orientation, he would have ensured that his only begotten son would mention it at some point in His ministry? Now to another thing that Jesus actually did say - "do not judge others or you yourself will be judged" (Matthew 7:1) and take the beam out of your own eye before seeking to take the speck out of your brother's. He excoriated the religious fundamentalists of his day, the Sadducees and the Pharisees, and were He around today he would lambast you for your faliure to use your God given intelligence and humane compassion.

New Testament Hebrews Chapter 1 verses 18 - 32, specifically verses 26 and 27 speak of homosexual behavior. God is intolerant of sin. He has provided us a way to escape His wrath (Jesus Christ). But people persist in their sin. I am not hostile. Jesus, in his first coming, was not hostile. But in the Second Coming, He will bring judgment and wrath with Him. [If you think writing about it is hostile, what name will you come up with to describe His destructive wrath?]

TeddyBoy Did you download the poll and read it? Obviously all your friends are homophobic. Since you are against homoseuxals yourself, it is highly likely that you will befriend people of comparable views. No doubt we homsoexuals could phone our friends "all over the country" and find the exact opposite to what you found with your straw poll. To claim as you have, that a publicly accountable organisation like the NewsWeek team handpicked over 1,000 people to be of only left oriented political ideology suggests a paranoia that calls into question the accuracy of any other findings your consultation with your gay hating friends might adduce. The former Soviet Union could justifiably be described as 'left oriented', being a communist state, yet this country persecuted and executed homosexuals on a massive scale.

This shift in public attitudes to the more humane is very encouraging. I do hope this comments page won't get swamped with endless debate on religious minutiae about wearing different coats, keeping slaves and sowing fields with mixed seeds. Last time I looked, there were over 38,000 Christian denominations worldwide. Not all of these are hostile to homosexuals or indeed homosexuality, ineed many bless same sex unions. When inconsistencies are pointed out, many hardline Christian commentators point out the Old Testament was written for the Hebrews, leaving only the New Testament for us. There is no sexually explicit referral anywhere in the Bible to homosexual sexual orientation or behaviour, all of it is reading between the lines, and heavily subjective to the translator. The world population exceeds 6 billion, 2/3 of which never even heard of the Holy Bible. Taking the US 2004 Census exit polls showing 4% openly gay as a rule of thumb, suggests that at least 250 million homosexuals are alive today, and no doubt will be replaced by homosexuals as our parents are invariably heterosexual. Given that most of these are non-Christian, it behoves governments to act humanely in all our interests. We homosexuals may differ in our predetermined sexual orientation, but our tax liabilities, and commitments to our families, communities, education and social obligations are just the same as yours.

Slavery was abolished in America since the Civil War. Which country are you living in?

  • Posted By: thinkpositive @ 12/06/2008 4:09:40 AM

My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev. 19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them? - Lev.24:10-16. Couldn't we just burn them to death at a private family affair like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws? (Lev. 20:14)

    • Posted By: michaelangel7 @ 12/06/2008 4:48:07 AM

P.S.S. His wife isn't violating scripture by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). The verse says "neither shall a garment mingled of linen and woollen come upon thee" and another version says "nor shall a garment of mixed linen and wool come upon you" - polyester isn't wool. Also, Lev. 20:14 doesn't say anything about a "private family affair" nor does this scripture say "people who sleep with their in-laws", it says "And if a man take a wife and her mother, it is wickedness:..." another version says "If a man marries a woman and her mother, it is wickedness..." so the word "take" is interpreted as "marry" - not "sleeps with", although marriage implies consumation. But again - God immediately punished Israelites for sin in the old testament. There are numerous examples of punishment for sin - if the Israelites failed to carry out the punishment themselves, God would punish the leaders and the violaters. Shall we sit in judgment upon God and declare He had no right to tell His creation what to do? You go right on ahead, I'll not join you in that endeavor.

    • Posted By: michaelangel7 @ 12/06/2008 4:30:27 AM

P.S. I should have read Lev. 19:19 rather than assume you articulated it correctly. "..You shall not sow your field with mixed seed..." another version "...thou shalt not sow thy field with mingled seed.." - this isn;t two different crops in the same field; this is two or more seeds mixed together and then thrown or planted together in the same space. I've never seen a field where this has been done. Example: a corn field harvested with a combine would ruin the wheat planted amongst the corn because the combine can only harvest one type of plant at a time - the corn header would sift out the wheat seed to the ground as it would any weeds. Please don't confuse the words of the verses with misinterpretation.

    • Posted By: michaelangel7 @ 12/06/2008 4:19:12 AM

Must I explain the entire Bible to you? I could - but would you want to read my long post? Old testament punishments - individuals gathering together to stone someone - no longer apply. Jesus, in the New Testament, told those present at a stoning that the one without sin could cast the first stone. Everyone dropped their stones and walked away. We live in a time period of Grace, which means that we do not see immediate destruction by God due to our sins. He will judge us on judgment day. P.S. Is your uncle an Israelite? If so, he probably would do well to obey the commands given his forefathers.

I know you have studied these things extensively, so I am confident you can help. Lev. 25:44 states that I may indeed possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighboring nations. Which do you think is a better investment, a slave from Mexico or Canada?

People also voted against interracial marriage - often under the guise of religious passages. The people had spoken - especially the Southern god-fearing ones. Fortunately people (and the courts) later realized how ridiculous that was. The world didn't fall apart. It used to be taboo to even have a Catholic marry a Protestant (it could lead to death by the the more radical factions in Northern Ireland not so very long ago). We progress, we grow and we learn. And this country was actually 'founded' by people coming over from Asia thousands of years ago, and conquered by European Christians. The nation we know (and enjoy) today is a result of that. Dozens (hundreds?) of religions existed here for thousands of years before the Europeans brought over their religion. It just makes me sad that in this 'free' country that normal, generous and good people that happen to be gay can't have compete, fulfilled life like us heteros. I don't quite understand the opposition and the ferocity of it.

The Bible's response to homosexuality: Old Testament: Leviticus Chap 18 God tells Moses to tell the children of Israel that "I am the Lord your God" (verse 2). In chapter 18 God defines sexual sins. [Note: homosexuality is in the list, verse 22. God doesn't "single out" homosexuality. Liars, thieves, murderers, rapists, anyone who has sex with animals, anyone who has sex with anyone outside of the bounds of marriage, anyone who divorces their spouse and remarries - except for certain cases, will all go to hell unless you repent/"walk away from" these evil practices and ask God for forgiveness. God sent his son, Jesus Christ, to earth to die on a cross to pay for the sins of all humankind. Because each and every single human being (past, present, and future) have sinned/"disobeyed God's commands" against God, we all will go to hell unless we each repent from our wicked ways and ask God to forgive us. Jesus Christ said that He is the gatekeeper to Heaven; the only way we can get to the Father/God is to go through Him. Jesus said, "Behold, I stand at the door [to your heart] and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me."(Revelation 3:21; which is chapter 3 verse 21)]. God doesn't just list sins and punishment. He provided the way out of sin - His son Jesus Christ. It is our choice to deny or believe the existence of God. It is our choice to continue doing sin or asking Him to forgive us and asking Jesus to come through the door of our heart. There will be a day of judgment. God shall judge everyone. Those who do not repent, do not ask for forgiveness, and do not ask Jesus to come into their heart are not forgiven. The penalty of sin is death (in other words blood is the required payment of sin). Jesus death was not bloodless. His death (blood) is the payment for the penalty of sin for all those who ask him into their heart. Those who deny Him - can't at judgment claim that His death paid for their sin. Therefore, all who do not belong to Jesus (those who haven't asked Him for forgiveness and into their heart) will have to pay for their sins with their own blood (their own death). If you have read this, you can't claim on judgment day that God didn't tell you He existed. You can't claim that God didn't explain that you need to ask for forgiveness and for Jesus to come into your heart in order to get to Heaven. Ask for forgiveness now! Jesus didn't come to earth the first time to condemn us sinners. He came the first time to announce the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand and that He was. "the Way, the Truth, and the Life." All who call upon the name of Jesus Christ shall be saved. Repent, ask forgiveness, ask Jesus into your heart, and you shall be part of the Kingdom of God as of that moment.

    Good point Karinad!
Question to same sex couples, why brothers can't marry sisters or even sisters marry sisters, why they can't ,even if they love each other? Should we change that?

    • Posted By: shmaverick @ 12/06/2008 3:50:08 AM

A bogus argument, a complete red herring. There's virtually no demand for recognition of incestuous relationships in the U.S., and virtually no incidence of brothers and sisters taking up with each other. (No wisecracks, people, about any geographic portion of our country....) Gays and lesbians in the U.S. number in the MILLIONS, and have formed millions of families that don't enjoy the legal protections that opposite-sex couples have. It's as simple as fixing a marriage license form so that people can fill their names under "Spouse #1" or "Spouse #2."
