I'm a vegetarian. If I get a job in a slaughterhouse, can I refuse to do my job based on my beliefs without getting fired? If I am an evangelical, do I have the right to refuse to come into work on a scheduled shift at work on a Sunday?

This is so ludicrous. Get the hell out of the medical profession if you refuse to perform medical procedures that you knew were part of your employment when you got into the profession.

"...abortion opponents will soon enjoy broader legal protections than ever. Those willing to provide abortions, on the other hand, will enjoy far fewer." How is it that those providing abortions will have fewer legal protections because of a law that allows nurses, pharmacist and ambulance drivers the right to refuse services? Physicians ALREADY had the right to deny or perform services. How many "health care workers" besides physicians actually perform abortions? So a doctor can find another nurse, a patient can find another pharmacy and the ambulance driver? If you're in an ambulance something is very wrong and I doubt it will have anything to do with abortion. This really only applies to nurses who might be asked to help a doctor or a pharmacist who might give out the morning after pill. Big deal! And if "health care workers" who won't provide services were to be forced to "wear a pin" stating that fact then why not those who do perform services "wear a pin" also? Or maybe just ask your doctor? And if asked and the answer isn't what you want to hear then you ALREADY have the right to find another health care worker.

So I think that medical workers should refuse care for anyone who is an evangelical or "born again" Christian! Let them die.

Anyone who chooses to not dispense medical care based on their religious beliefs should be required to wear a pin stating that fact so patients know they are being attended by someone who may not offer them the full scope of medical care possible. Patients should have the right to request someone else attend them based on the full advance knowledge that the nurses, doctors or pharmacists may not give them complete care before they invest any time in the presence of the person.
