Yes. In the USA, the UK, a number of other European countries, HIV and AIDS have affected young gay men more than any other group of people. In the UK and USA especially, the percentage of young gay men who have been infected with HIV and the percentage with AIDS are much higher than those among other groups such as heterosexual people or children. There are also other parts of the world where men who have sex with men, many of whom do not identify themselves as gay, are affected by AIDS.

In the USA, it is estimated that nearly 220,000 men who have sex with men were living with HIV/AIDS in 2006, and nearly 5,000 had died. Around 48% of men diagnosed with HIV/AIDS in the USA in 2006 were probably exposed to the virus through male-to-male sexual contact.1

As if God didn't have more important stuff to worry about than gays. Mumbai? Bin Laden? If you are an opponent of gay marriage than you cannot be a proponent of "All people are created equal".

I am sure Christ our loving God would be quite disappointed at some of those supposedly religious folks here who have posted nothing but hate and contempt for other human beings. The two greatest commandments he said were to love God and to love one another. If you use the Bible to promote hate and intolerence then you defeat the intent and its purpose. The Word of God was given to us all and is a book of love, acceptance and inclusion. The vehemence I read from some here have me wondering if they even know Christ and His message of Love? It is all very sad to see such anger and exclusion when we all need to just get along with one another. That's what God wants us to do....

I never thought I'd say this, but thank goodness for Proposition 8. It has ignited the passion of gay people and their supporters and hopefully this backlash will topple all the anti-gay legislation and constitutional amendments that have been used to oppress gay people for so long.

Sin? That is an artificial construct used by some religions to make people conform -- even people not of the same religions! When it comes to public policy, sin has absolutely no place. Let it guide religious marriage and other customs, but it is useless in defining human rights in a pluralistic society.

To Hope: you said "Jesus did not condem people for being different, he himself was somewhat of an outcast. What's wrong with being different. I'll tell you what, nothing. And people fighting for the respect and rights that every single human. And creature... deserves, there's nothing wrong with that. "
I'll tell you what's wrong with your statement (and you should know this, studying to be a reverend and all). Do you remember reading why God destroyed Sodom and Gomarrah? Because of sexual immorality. Because of man laying with man.
Homosexuality is not just "being different". It IS a sin. I keep hearing the argument that "I was born this way, so that makes it acceptable". Well, what about the people who won't fight that need within themselves to steal, kill, or maim. Should we just accept and propagate this behavior with the argument that everyone deserves to be true to themselves and the rules don't apply in certain situations?
I realize that this is a stretch in that stealing, killing, and maiming directly and instantly affect other people, but the point is that sin IS sin. A lot of people choose not to believe in Christianity, but you claim to want to preach it someday. Be very careful that you do not become one of the false prophets that God declares will be dealt with so harshly.

Oh my God. Yes you religious people I am talking to God. Because I am a religious person too! I actually hope to be a reverend one day. A female reverend! Oh no... someone is going to have a problem with that. But there is one small thing that is different between me and some religious people. I do not force my views upon others, or tell people who don't beleive what I beleive that they are wrong.

When the bible was written women were veiwed as little more than possessions. Still are EX: Rap Video's HAHAHA It's a Joke! Now we have rights... we should have always had. EVERY SINGLE HUMAN DESERVES RESPECT AND RIGHTS AND FREEDOM AND LOVE. BE THEY GAY or STRAIT! They do not deserve to be called disgusting. They do not deserve to be called wrong for being what they are

And the people who refer to gay's as anything other than people who happen to be homosexual, are just wrong. Don't name call.

Though some movie stereo types are funny. And labeling can be entertaining, but save it for the Will Ferrell movies. EX: When they make fun of women I am not offended, as long as it's fairly good hearted, and somethings are so true or absurd... you laugh.

AND THE MAJORITY OF RELIGIOUS PEOPLE ARE NOT ARE AROGANT, IGNORANT, OR DOWN RIGHT MEAN. I apologize to anyone who may have been hurt by that population. I APOLOGIZE FOR MEMBERS OF THE CHRISTIAN FAITH WHO HAVE MADE IT SEEM LIKE A HEARTLESS AND JUDGEMENTAL MINDSET. I assure you it was never meant to be that way. I'm sorry.

No one has any right to speak, dirogatory words about another person, or group of people. Ignorance is not a sin, it is merely not knowing what they have done wrong. Being mean at times is forgiveable. Arrogance... I am fairly arogant myself... But please people think before you type, or speak!

But please people educate yourselves before speaking terrible things about gays OR ANY group of people. I am very saddened to see that those who say they love Christ. Are so mean spirited towards the gay population. This will sound rather dorky to some but I'll say it anyways.

Jesus did not condem people for being different, he himself was somewhat of an outcast. What's wrong with being different. I'll tell you what, nothing. And people fighting for the respect and rights that every single human. And creature... deserves, there's nothing wrong with that.

They shouldn't have to fight for rights, they should be given. I'm strait and religious... and I can see that what they want won't hurt anybody. Not as much as taking it away from them would. :(

Everything and everyone was born with the right to be respected, not liked persay, but respected and treated with compassion, and until people can realize that, the earth will remain the same. Sadly.

"We win you Lose Sucks to be you." Ah the ranting of the "Christian Fundamentalists". A prime reason I rejected their false claims of Christianity years ago. Why would anyone wish to attend religious services with people who regularly throw tantrums and taunt opponents in ways no different than shrieking 2 year olds? Thank you Roy Rogers; for my dailly reminder of why I rejected you people as a completely false form of Christianity years ago.

    Marriage is a civil right.

  • Posted By: BethAS @ 12/09/2008 10:47:31 PM

Thankfully in America civil rights aren't doled out in popularity contests - they are doled out at birth - and patriotic Americans will fight until everyone's civil rights are recognized and protected.

There is, indeed, a new generation rising up and standing against anti-gay bias in ways like never before. Very glad to see Newsweek directing so much attention to this fight.
