I'm glad to hear of all the success stories but feel it can be a little misleading. My husband and I developed and app for kids called Henry and Hailey's preschool pals. It is very well done. Awesome art and great sound. However I have no delusions of selling a million downloads. With over 10,000 apps some apps it is a very crowded marketplace that is getting more and more crowded by the hour. There are some terrible apps out there. You can tell which ones were done in 2 weeks and hastily thrown out.

I also praise Apple for opening up the platform to everyone. We are not professional developers. It is amazing that we could create Henry and Hailey's preschool pals for our son and have the ability to literally sell it all over the world. It is an amazing opportunity. We have already developed a second alphabet game. But I believe that only a few people will get the million bucks this article talks about. For the rest of us, it is more a labor of love.

One other thing I forgot to mention in my prior response was that when I did upgrade my Palm Treo to Windows Mobile 6 on the ATT network it did support 3G, HSDPA. It's darn fast if you have 3G access. One of my biggest complaints is the form factor for the Treo and it's terrible battery life. Even if you could write some great killer apps for Windows Mobile, not having the larger screen available in the iPhone has practical limitations on what you would want to do a a small medium resolution screen. Watching Mobi TV on this small of a device while novel is not an ideal experience while the user experience on the iPhone is incredible in comparison. This is one of the reasons why the app market will flourish on the iPhone and didn't do as well on Windows Mobile. Also, while we may be inclined to blame Microsoft for how slow it is to roll out new updates of its Windows Mobile platform, Microsoft does not have the kind of control that Apple has with only one carrier and one two models. Presumably Microsoft would be a lot more aggressive in updates but they also have to support quite a number of carriers and models while for the moment Apple is a closed shop with on main partner. That gives you quite a huge advantage in the speed that you can test and deploy OS software updates and getting buyoff from numerous carriers where you supply Windows Mobile (some like Palm) with limited form factor and a less comfortable user experience will definitely hold you back.

    Sparkomatic,
The article could have been a little more clear about the Windows Mobile Market but it was fairly accurate for the iPhone potential There is a huge potential for the Iphone market. The Windows Mobile market is differant as you noted and Microsoft hasn't really seemed to be able to buld the momentum with WIndows Mobile.

You can grab lots of apps on Handango granted not nearly as many as for the iPhone and these follow the general cost of Windows shareware between 15-30.00 but the cusotmer demand has not been as entusiastic as iPhone customers. HTC (htc.com) is an established phone company maker. They make the the ATT/Cingular 8125/8525,,the tMobile Tillt and lots of others. They've actually been farily innovative. --- Howard Sobel, www.wugnet.com

And there's no Windows Mobile apps out there. None at all. Nope. The platform hasn't been free to develop on for 5+ years. Microsoft doesn't allow developers to do what they want, sell what they want where they want,, or even dream about creating profitable software without restrictions or taxation. There haven't been developers coding for it since 2002. There's no way that Windows Mobile was formerly known as PocketPC, and the hundred thousand or so PocketPC apps run on Windows Mobile. I bet HTC is a brand new company who's first phone is the Google Android G1. They have not made dozens of Windows Mobile phones. They have not won design awards for them. They're not developing insanely useful applcations for their phones. Oh - And I heard that Windows Mobile phones did not have all of the features of the 2nd Gen 3G iPhone before the 1st Gen iPhone was even released. They also don't use UTMS for data transfer that makes 3G look weak.

Nailed it, Author! I'm sure glad you did your research!

In all seriousness, Apple's AppStore centralized model is the only leg up they have. Unfortunately for the WinMo platform, it's a big leg up. By taking a PC approach to software development and distribution, Microsoft allows massive freedom - but less in-your-face exposure of the apps to users. I'd like to see them integrate an AppStore type model that can be accessed from any carrier (there are WinMo phones for all of them - not just one).

That is great to hear the success for these companies.
We promote Apple Apps Store, Apple iTunes and iPods at D L SERVICES INC. The other end of that spectrum is at D L SERVICES INC. a small corporation near Austin Texas feel like it is responsible for promoting some of these Apps software over night hits has not made a dime. We literally get thousands and thousands of hit every month with no very few sales. One month we had near one hundred thousand hit on our site. It???s nice site and we like promoting anything that will stimulate the economy perhaps our ship will come in also we are optimistic.

I think the iTunes app store is amazing but find this article misleading. My husband and I recently developed a kids app called Henry and Hailey's preschool pals. It is an amazing mix and match game with wonderful art and sound. However I have no delusions of making a million dollars on it.

This article doesn't really do justice to the wide variety of apps available for the iPhone and iPod touch. It just lists a few gag apps and an music app. On AppBeacon.com , we're tracking 11,350 apps that include games, productivity apps, business aids, and medical tools for doctors. The quantity and quality of education apps is astounding. Prices in the store range from free to $449.99. There literally is something for everyone.
