Our Disinformed Electorate

We saw more aggressive fact-checking by journalists in this election than ever before. Unfortunately, as a post-election Annenberg Public Policy Center poll confirms, millions of voters were bamboozled anyway.

I didn't vote for obama. I'm a fiscal conservative that believes in individual rights to own firearms. I don't believe that he's a muslim, I don't believe that he's the next Hitler, or that he's gay or had people killed or any other crazy thing about him that I wouldn't believe about any other politician. But, I have never been more depressed and disheartend about American politics and this article touches on why. I used to be the biggest believer in the free press but, now I'm not so sure (I know there really isn't any alternative.) I used to be the biggest supporter for the people by the people but, now I don't know ( I do realize that everything else is much worse.) It is so obvious that ideologically, the USA is moving toward Eurosocialism and anti gun rights. My question is, not how to stop it since I believe in majority rule but, why? How did we become a country that believes our neighbors (our fellow taxpayers) and our government agencies (the police) have the responsibility and ability (respectivley) to take care of us. How is it anyone's responsibility but, my own to provide for my secuity, financial or otherwise? How is it, that we think we can rid the country (much less the world) of povery or any kind of pain or discomfort? Above all, how did We ever come to believe that, even in cases when people can help each other, government agencies are the best way to do that? Talk about a big inefficient middleman. When thinking about the future of our great country (still the best country in the world, for now) I fear much more than just fear it's self!

"Above all, how did We ever come to believe that, even in cases when people can help each other, government agencies are the best way to do that? Talk about a big inefficient middleman." I'd rather pay the government a small fee and have my doctor make my medical decisions than have an overpaid CEO of an insurance company who is only interested in profits making my medical decisions. STOP DRINKING THE CONSERVATIVE KOOL-AID AND CLEAR THE COBWEBS OUT OF YOUR BRAIN! PLEASE!!!!!
      Libricrat YOU ARE CLUELESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"It is so obvious that ideologically, the USA is moving toward Eurosocialism and anti gun rights." SAY WHAT? Who the hell wants to take your guns? I'm a progressive and have more that a few firearms and I'm not worried in the least that anyone, liberals (hint, hint), are going to take my guns. The NRA has done a masterful job in brainwashing the easily terrified intellectually stunted, conservatives in this Country.
And socialism? You mean the fire department, police departments, schools, hospitals and on and on and on which are a form of socialism. My GOD get a grip on reality!
YOU MUST BE AFRAID OF YOUR OWN SHADOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So it's your belief then, that America was intended to be a nation of isolated individuals, all armed to the teeth, and prepared to protect their small patch from the rampaging hordes who would steal everything you own?

Are you old enough to remember people being afflicted with polio? I suspect not, as no one who ever witnessed that, the quarantines, the burning down of houses, to protect the balance of the community because we were regressive at the time, could ever say that America has always been a country of isolated individuals not connected to, and affected by, each other in even the most simple of things.

Not until the US government took control of the fight against polio did it get better. It required medical research, application, better informed policies on how to deal with it, and a unified national desire to stop this from scarring our communities. Sure, there was always some *** making fun of the kids in leg braces, but on balance, must knew better, and were better, than saying somehow people so afflicted desired it, or should be abandoned, or forgotten, or ridiculed. My America is better than that.

Not until this country stood together, through our government, and took decisive action, did we as a people overcome this horrible problem.

What saddens me most is we are starting to see polio occur again. Let the market deal it with, you say? You're nuts. There is no profit in human compassion and decency. We will all die waiting for your precious market to help anybody but themselves. The amoral tempo of ???Me First???, is grinding to its final beat. Wake up and look around, there is a reason "man" is capable of being above the balance of the animal kingdom. It starts with the soul, not the market.

Maybe the reason people believe that Obama will raise their taxes is because the have common sense and do not listen to the empty promises of a candidate. We heard Bush 1 say "read my lips no new taxes" then sign a new tax increase. Were the voters who did not believe the "no new taxes" misinformed or inciteful. Currently it would take a real rube to believe that Obama can operate the current government, add the 700 stimulis and do all the other things he has promises without coming after the paychecks of every working stiff in america. Its a matter of numbers and the numbers, unlike the capaigns of both parties and msnbc, dont lie.

    • Posted By: az_inde @ 03/06/2009 2:26:53 PM

Soggy, really you know for a fact that Obama will have to raise our taxes? See my friend you are a major part of the problem. Bush cut taxes on the rich, the deficit went through the roof and he never raised taxes. In fact Republicans wanted to cut taxes on the rich again. Where does your logic come from? Wait, don't answer that I already know.

  • Posted By: summer1216 @ 03/06/2009 1:30:18 PM

I agree with mespoppa. I was struck in this campaign that it was just mostly "bad form" to lie egregiously. There are no consequences to the most blatant and damaging falsehoods -- not of opinion, but fact. It`s not just the moral question, it`s that the electorate -- busy doing their jobs, raising their children, helping their communities -- can`t possibly stay ahead of the tide of gunk, and makes decisions that get them what they didn`t want. Factcheck organizations work hard, and I looked at them frequently, but I struggled to keep up with the truth.

  • Posted By: mespoppa @ 01/08/2009 3:05:55 PM

Maybe it should be a federal crime to disseminate lies in a political campaign with severe penalties. The penalties should be doubled or trippled for those issued in the final three weeks of a campaign.

This is why I don't trust the People. I trust a good old-fashioned left-wing government to guide those who are less intelligent.

I think one of the biggest misinformations was comparing our corporate tax rate to that of Ireland's. Yes, Ireland's corporate tax rate is lower then that of the US, but they have a VAT (essentially a sales tax) of 21% (as compared to the US's 0% federal sales tax rate). Additionally, from my understanding, they have 2 tax brackets (20% and 41%), where as the US has 6 tax brackets. So, you cannot compare Ireland and US in corporate taxes.

    • Posted By: Silvanne @ 12/15/2008 12:05:20 PM

Dianaraven: Keep in mind that the VAT does not apply to health and medical services, children's clothing, insurance and banking services, and food among other things. Also, they have no state or local sales taxes (which are 10% where I live) and they get more bang for their buck--free college, free healthcare (and I've lived in Ireland, the healthcare there is excellent), old-age pension, etc. And for that they pay 20% on the first ~42,000 euros (unless, they make little enough that they pay NO taxes) and 41% on whatever they make above that mark.

It's a deal compared with what we get for our money.

      • Posted By: dianaraven @ 12/15/2008 2:28:37 PM

That was the point I was trying to make. Thank you for making it a bit clearer. Ireland and the US were compared on only one source of government income, and not the full picture.

        • Posted By: LydiaZ36 @ 01/05/2009 4:07:11 PM

Plus, the very same people who were comparing Ireland and the US would have went NU-Y-CLUR iif free health care was suggested for all US citizens (and I live in Texas, where we have no state income taxes)-- all reasons why the comparison falls woefully.

As far a whether or not Obama will raise taxes on most small business and individuals: Wait 3 years and revisit this question. What he says and what he will do may be 2 different things. He will not be able to do what he says he wants to do without raising taxes, so if someone believes he will when he says he will not, that does not mean that person was "bamboozled"; they may just have a realistic view of the situation.

Aggressive fact checking by the media yeah when it came to Palin's daughter or her wardrobe but not when it came to anything that might hurt Obama. Newsweek is the worst at it. Of course they wanted Obama to win and thats ok i wanted anyone but Obama to win (McCain). Just be honest about it stop pretending you are unbiased. It is a joke even the premise of this article; McCain never siad he was going to cut medicare and when he was asked he said he would not. Obama's tax would of course raise taxes on some small businesses not would it raise the taxes of most? It is hard to say cause it changes so much and who knows how it would change after he gets in office. He is liberal and he believes in raising taxes so why wouldn't he raise the taxes of most small businesses. Remember many small Businesses make over the $200,000 that Obama thinks should share with poeple that make less. Poeple that make more do so because they invested their time, money and hard work to do so. They are poeple that are inteligent and desciplined. They have succedded. Helping the less fortunate is a good thing. Donate to your chuirch and to your favorite charity. but for the Governement to take my money because they say i make to much and then waste alot of it and give some of it to pleople that make less thank me, that didn't invest the money time and hard work to get where i am is dumb. Obama think it is a good idea so why wouldn't we think he will raise the taxes of most small businesses. Newsweek wake up. If you are going to report on things like this at least get right.

When the media (Newsweek, in this case) purposely misreports, it has a political agenda. THIS is the key fact.
The opening statement about Obama's taxes is blatantly false. His plan to allow unions to take secret votes to build unions up in America will force small businesses out in record numbers, if his plan is successful. Liberal spinners should have their butts held to the flame for this sort of purposeful misinformation.

  • Posted By: paulte @ 01/05/2009 10:59:10 AM

It's not just disinformation, it's money as well. The same dumb Americans who believe false information also sent money to the Obama campaign, believing him to be some kind of messiah, not! Obama had $750M to spend to get elected. This allowed him the half hour infomercial and media saturation. I think it is true to a certain extent to say that he bought the election. Another problem is the constant polling which led to the feeling that the election of Obama was inevitable. I rarely saw a poll which had McCain-Palin or McCain alone before Palin, above 42% of the vote. But in the actual election McCain-Palin got more than 46% of the popular vote. Don't forget that the major media outlets (all liberal) control the polling!

The majority of voters vote their party line, few are independants let alone neutral. Understanding the issues if not all of them is last on their agenda! You need to be an INFORMED VOTER to make an intelligent choice, voting by any other method often leads to disappointment and apathy!

  • Posted By: deancc @ 01/04/2009 6:26:12 PM

Voters confused? Not really, just stupid! They have no idea what really is going on in the world. They are too busy watching American Idol or some other lower I.Q. entertainment. They don't even know who their representatives are, how long their term in office is or their voting record!. Dumb is as dumb does. These confused idiots deserve what ever comes their way.

  • Posted By: chiefagc @ 12/26/2008 5:14:31 PM

How could anyone be surprised that almost half the country is stupid- almost half the country voted for dumbya TWICE-
what more proof do you need that Americans are the dumbest people in the world.

This is a good article! I am fortunately one who knows the facts of legislation in this country. It is a simple rule of constitutional law and a historical fact that no sitting president has ever enforced any new legislation without the aid and support of congress and/or the supreme court. Our president can enforce only parts of legislation without the approval of both or either of these two branches of govenment. I am entertained by the level of importance the public places on issues such as healthcare, and taxes, when the reality is that no one president can take the sole credit for any of those changes. War is one thing our commander and cheif can act on that can influence such changes to these issues.
I thought that this was taught to most american children at an early age. I know I learned it. i suppose we all need to go back to the basics and reeducated our public. Show more shows like "School House Rock".
I think polls have shown the general level of educated americans to be cery low. I hate to say that without ruffling feathers, but the fact is that we are all not so intellegent. I guess it could be traced back to all the drug use so of us have been involved with. That would be an interesting poll! Find out how many voters used some sort of nonperscription substance for more than a year. Then ask them of their education level and then about there priorities on voting, Ask them why they voted for one or the other candidate. Then I promise you there will be an enormous shift to one side or the other in different direction due to education levels and drug use!

    conservative army wife also says,

    - "The lending laws were made so lax that you did not have to
    - prove income or payment history.

    My response:

So, did someone hold a gun to the head of all the bank execs and say they were PREVENTED from checking the creditworthiness of applicants? No, it was their choice (greed) to take the risky loans. And what's your point? That this mess isn't ALL GWB's fault? Then Peace! I think everyone knows that. But that has nothing to do with the question of whether the policies Obama is offering to try to fix the problem are good policies or not. What matters now is getting you guys to finally accept that this BS about "unregulated markets will fix all our problems" -- which has been in fashion in Washington for several decades -- leads to ruin. You want *really* unregulated markets, try Haiti or Somalia.

Listen, I fault the borrowers too. But accountability has to start at the top, or no one will be responsible.

I think Obama is becomming a little more worried about his "murder" problem in Chicago. The Chicago Police are finally beginning to seriously look into his involvement with his past gay lovers who were murdered during the primary. Supposedly to keep their mouths shut. How do you say "Don't ask and Don't tell " in Obama speak? He belongs in prison!

    • Posted By: JendaW @ 12/15/2008 12:28:25 PM

And don't forget his involvement with 9/11! One of Obamas gay lovers was Saddam Hussein, which he let the truth leak about Saddams involvement with 9/11 so that Bush would send head hunters. Obamas evil plan worked and now he is passing legislation that will force all women with heterosexual babies to get abortions so that only gay babies would be the next generation of Americans. Once Obama increases the gay population he also plans to manipulate the constitution so that guns are permanently banned and heterosexuals can???t fight the coming Sexual Identity Civil Wars. Obama will then call all his gay lover Muslim friends and have them suicide bomb all our churches and monuments paving the way for Obama to establish the Muslim religion as the only true religion for all Americans. We are all going to have to follow or face the death penalty. We will be in a permanent war with other countries because Obama will try to overthrow all other governments so that he can rule the world, and tax small businesses! The reason why all this will happen is because Obama is the anti-Christ! I would like to see Newsweek tell the truth for once.

Ok you guys are just getting crazy now. I'm a fiscal conservative that supports the 2nd amendment more than anyone else but, these two statements are the most rediculous, far fetched garbage I've seen on here to date. We are all less intellegent for having read them!

        • Posted By: DWPitts @ 12/17/2008 12:04:37 PM

LOL. The first piece is tin-eared, shill propaganda. The second is acid-laced satire aimed at pimping the first. I guess I'm no longer surprised people can not discern the literary difference.

Sun may be going down on the USA. References an old Jackson Browne song if your curious, though I conditioned it with a thread of opitimism because I do not want that to happen.

When was the last time in the USA we actually witnessed fiscal conservatism as the basis of our government? I'm old, and have never seen it. I often wonder what William F. Buckley truly thought of all this mess? Sadly, we'll never know now...unless of course, Chris knows what his father truly thought and is prepared to speak out. Somehow, I don't think he will do that out of respect.

In his autobiography, Ghandi said, "You say you want peace, why do you come at me with bombs?" That is my recall of an attempt to read his book before my life continued to be interrupted, which it is now. I find the media DUE public demand of CONSCIENCE driven priorities when covering the news.

But, backing up to a historically effective leader, Ghandi, just checking on the biography v autobiography, my recall was dim, the Wikipedia encycloped offers some other good quotes, although I believe Americans need that first quote, above, "you say you want peace" then WHY threatened innocent countries with nuclear weapons which you say are not allowed. WHAT IF THE WORLD AGREES AND IS WAITING FOR THE U.S. to wage PEACE not war, NOW, and with IMPEACHMENT of Bush to prove the democracy and people rule in America?

But, here are some Ghandi quotes thanks to Wikipedia:

Gandhi explains his philosophy and way of life in his autobiography The Story of My Experiments with Truth. He was quoted as saying:

"When I despair, I remember that all through history the way of truth and love has always won. There have been tyrants and murderers and for a time they seem invincible, but in the end, they always fall ??? think of it, always."

"What difference does it make to the dead, the orphans, and the homeless, whether the mad destruction is wrought under the name of totalitarianism or the holy name of liberty and democracy?"

"An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind."

"There are many causes that I am prepared to die for but no causes that I am prepared to kill for."

My comment to Obama is CURRENTLY SELF DEFENSE IS NOT THE ISSUE and NO EXCUSE for his behavior up front in the face of PEACE ACTIVISTS and an UNWITTING and BAMBOOZLED nation who thought they voted for CHANGE!

They should do their homework, The League of Women Voters who used to host the debates suggested in 2008, to do your own scorecard, put your top ten issues on the left in a column and then check the stands of each candidate and se who earns your vote. Baldwin, Barr, McCain, McKinney, Nader, Obama. SIX could be compettive for majority results on track, not off track. Democracy means the people vote out the bums if the new leadership is wanted! If approved as is, then they stay in. The media is not the voter, as we all know, and the POPULAR VOTE is supposed to be informed. The present says the powers that be are against change, and every individual has to do their own homework to net an informed electorate. The media gave TWO incumbents as if they were the only viable choices. An outright LIE and railroading of no change as if wanted, when it was NOT.

  • Posted By: ellisliza @ 12/17/2008 10:01:36 AM

Every voter should compare SIX not TWO and see who you, as an individual, thinks is BEST to lead a nation on track!

The names of the SIX on the ballot nationally, who could win if the media had given them the proper competitive limelight for the basics of education, track, and AGENDA, then we might have a real winner, by a majority of informed citizens ABLE to choose freely with a proper and honest press giving us the FACTS.

Chuck Baldwin, Constitutional party, Bob Barr, Libertarian Party, John McCain, Republican Party, Cynthia McKinney, Green Party, Ralph Nader, Independent Candidate, and Barack Obama, Democratic Party.

No state was RED or BLUE all were up for grabs as DUE A MAJORITY WINNER to be shown by the popular vote, of SIX not TWO showing nationally on the majority of state ballots, 48 states are "winner take all". So, of the SIX, look at their education, track, and agenda, and then decide.

As to my knowledge of Foreign Policy, I looked at the Barack Obama's website to see what it said, because I know people believed something other than who and what he is and said so, the media portrayed a lie. His site, barackobama.com on the "issues" tab, and then the "foreign policy" tab, has a video of a speech he delivered. He is upfront offering unwanted war and it is not the proper duty of a president and not honorable peace policy, he is saying in front of everyone he wants to invade freely without any censure of his doing so and using "unmanned" warplanes to execute his cowardly tyranny. he is not a Commander in Chief he is an offender in chief. The audience clapped. But, i believe if the entire nation knew the truth, they would not clap, they would be horrified at what he thinks he is being given permission to do, BUSH UNCHECKED at a worse level. Check out the video on his site. Reality Check! NOT MY FOREIGN POLICY, NO THANKS. I voted for Nader. Check out his site, too, votenader.org - he offers reversal of the Middle East policy and restoration of law and order and, of course, the peace and global harmony that would come with that.

THE MEDIA SUPPORTS THE BUSH OFFENSIVES AGAINST SANE SAFETY AND PEACE AND EVEN THE BUDGET ON TRACK FOR GOVERNMENT NOT MILITARY CONTROL -- WITH OPEN EYES AND NO CONSCIENCE. BOB SCHIEFFER DOESN'T CARE ABOUT HIS DUTY TO PROTECT PROPER SAFETY AND POLICY WITH NO NUKES AS REQUIRED AND OBVIOUS.

Nuclear Weapons used as threats is not a proper policy by any standards, and it is against the proper international peace policy of the Anti Ballistic Missile Defense Treaty. The cold war is over and there is no such thing as WON, by the worst villains holding ugly trophies. The weapons currently held are an offense to world order and peace policy and the United Nations is waiting for the proper compliance and elimination of nuclear weapons, the U.S. is in the lead of non-compliance and I believe the U.S. is heinous and Bush is responsible. There is no cause for the current invasions by the U.S. and refusal to get rid of nuclear weapons with proper U.N. membership compliance and honor with a Global Peace Community in view. The United Nations has tried to be patient and offer diplomatic peace efforts to support world order. Certainly nukes ARE NOT part of U.S. peace policy...do you see U.S. peace policy? No, it is not there. Nader offered it and the media refused the proper contest of SIX not TWO on the ballot for DEMOCRACY to happen.

NADER is sane, and whether or not I am, my reasoning on safety is certainly ok. I have a blog, which I will refer you to, and you can read the profile background there. I was a volunteer writer for the FREEZE in 1985 and interviewed people who were selected by a steering committee to speak out to the public audience on the subject. Howard Nash, former Director of the Naval Underwater Systems Command, said, "It is pure insanity, they [nuclear weapons] have no use but to prevent their use; each new round makes the world less safe, not more safe."
