Can a chicken give consent to marry? Im just asking...
Can a chicken give consent to marry? Im just asking...
Can a chicken give consent to marry?
Evolution is a disproven theory?!? Evolution is accepted and encouraged as the factual basis for life on this planet by the Roman Catholic church!
If I may make an observation, the argument of Creationists continues to evolve. ;)

This would have so much more weight if only those preaching so vehemently and passionately about the 5% of people who can't get married would first look to their own houses and do something about adultery and divorce. Jesus said a LOT about adultery and divorce, but these seem to be non-issues. Why would that be?
Maybe it hits too close to home?
Before you tell me how to live my life, even if I do not share your beliefs (which is another issue entirely), Christ STRONGLY suggests you look to your own. Matthew 7:1-5
I am nauseated by the people who run up to others and say "God hates you" in one breath and "come to my church" in the next. Then they wonder why, exactly, they are "persecuted". Go play martyr somewhere else, pharisee. Matthew 15:9
Christ would not recognize the sinful palaces erected in His name, and I put to this group that most of His followers in here wouldn't allow Him in their church, because He was not a conformist. He wouldn't be political, He wouldn't have much Sunday finery, and I don't think He would sit in first class. He wouldn't be sitting on a cushion bestowing wisdom to believers, He'd be out on the street ministering to the very people those of you who believe you already walk on water condemn so self-righteously. Remember who He used to hang with back in the day?
They weren't perfumed and washed, and they definitely weren't members of the local chamber of commerce.
Put your own burning house in order before you start pointing at everyone else's, and then, instead of condemning them with words of hate, minister to them with words of love.
I am beginning to agree with an idea put forth in one of these other forums by a Catholic who claimed that one of the biggest mistakes of the past two thousand years was to make a translation of the Bible accessible to lay people. So many misunderstandings and abuses by self-proclaimed visionaries who aren't intelligent enough to recognize metaphors and parables have arisen from that folly.
Somewhere, Christ is weeping at the travesties being committed in His name, and the beast that the American church has become continues to chew up souls.
You seem to be very angry and your tone hostile. I think that the true hurts those it ensnares. Next, I don't proclaim to be perfect in any way but if its wrong then its wrong accoding to GOD and Not Me(man). I pray for forgiveness of everyone of US who sins,
Oh, and I'm certainly not Christ, but would you say that His anger at the moneychangers was because He was somehow ensnared by their greed?
;)

Respectfully, this issue does anger me because it is a non-issue that is stealing time from focusing on real problems. In my mind, saving marriage begins with the 95% of people who have the right and treat it as disposable.
As a religious issue, this frosts my cookies when those who claim to be literalists so blatantly pick and choose from the book and claim that they do not. The Bible *does* speak of slavery, it *does* speaking of stoning adulterers, it *does* speak of the evils of clothing of mixed fibers, as well as lobsters and shell-fish.
They run around saying "hate hate hate" and act the victim when people are repulsed. My heart does not bleed for these people. We do reap what we sow.
As a civil issue, this is another distraction used by politicians to manipulate the populace to get what they want: elected. I propose this to you: how many presidents, senators, supreme court justices, congressmen, etc. have been elected on a pro life platform since Roe v. Wade. Why does it still stand? How many of those self-same politicians perennially make so much noise about flag burning, but we have yet to see a constitutional amendment.
This is a political issue because it brings out voters.
A politician railing against adulterers -- let's put the adultery laws back in place, let's make both marriage and divorce more difficult (to end Brittany Spears type quickie marriages and divorces.) There's an issue, and it even involves God's direct commandments, but considering how many evangelicals in this country have divorced, so ... never mind. If we are so concerned about souls, why aren't the Ten Commandments, and the Big Two from Jesus as important as verses about people who even the reverend arguing against gay marriage in this article says have no choice?
Who does this feed, who does this clothe, who does this shelter, and most importantly who does this bring to Christ?
I am also curious how a heart full of Christ has room for hatred?
If you have made different choices, I commend you. I thank you for your comment, as well. Yes this angers me, and it hurts me, because it turns people who need Christ so much, away from Him, His love, and His healing.

The King James Version is notorious for being filled with mistranslation. Too long to go into here (do a google search on Bible mistranslations) Here's a short recap:
In the New Testament, the two verses 1 Cor 6:9 & 1 Tim 1:10 are mistranslated as condemning homosexuality (but not in the Roman Latin Vulgate Bible or the 1545 German Bible of Martin Luther). Mistranslation is based on two ancient Greek words "malakoi" & "arsenokoitai" (Greek letters "ARSENOKOITAI " literally, "male-beds"), which was a new word used by Paul (Saul) at the time and not a common term for homo-sexuality. Because Paul was speaking in a religious context, the word "arsenokoitai" has been translated as referring to male-pimps or customers in temple prostitution, a common practice in so-called pagan rituals widespread in Temple Cult worship of the time. [The minor term "malakoi" (used to describe "soft" clothing) is non-sexual and has been translated as "effeminate" (KJV), although others state "weaklings" or "morally weak, lazy" men.]
The ancient Greek word "arsenokoitai" occurs in only those 2 verses, 1 Cor 6:9 & 1 Tim 1:10. Logically, if homosexuality were considered a sin, there should be many verses about it, and the word "arsenokoitai" would occur more than twice. The word "arsenokoitai" refers to the rare practice of temple prostitution, not general homosexuality. Yet, precisely because the word is so rare and had no formal definition, the word "arsenokoitai" is crucial in fostering misinterpretation of the Bible: a more common word could not be so easily redefined.
The infamous verse Leviticus 20:13, is about a married-man with another male, in the "marriage-bed" as with his wife.
"Kai hos an koimEthE meta arsenos koitEn gunaikos, bdelugma epoiEsan amphoteroi; thanatousthwsan, enoichoi eisin." [Lev 20:13 in Greek Septuagint LXX]. The translation of the Greek term 'gunaikos' is interpreted to mean: wife. Hence, the verse actually forbids male-male adultery, pertaining only to a married man.
Leviticus 18:22, the wording of the original Hebrew is different from the KJV:
"We-et-zakar lo' tishkav mishkevey 'ishshah"
Leviticus 18:22 mentions: someone + a male + a woman; hence, a forbidden 3-way. Those verses actually mention other women or wives, rather than male-male relationships.
Is it just the historical mistranslation at the root of homophobia? Why is this not better known? Your point seems to imply that homophobia is not biblically based, but a common human condition of hatred of the unknown or strange.. Because of this, It is important to gay people everywhere to come out and tell their stories.
Actually there are other verses that specifically speak against homosexual and lesbian lifestyles. Don't take someone elses word read to know for your self.
This is untrue. No where (and I challenge you to find a passage) does the Bible ever even MENTION lesbian relationships. This is because women were essentially property with little value, so it didn't matter what they did.
Do some research before you spout nonsense.
Thank you very much to Mr. Bill Wylie-Kellerman for providing support to Ms. Miller in regards to her groundbreaking article on the bible and homosexuality. I think it is vitally important that views such as his, which espouse love and equality over obscure and out of date textual references, are heard in our society. The argument that some Christians use that they can love gay people while condemning their "sin" holds about as much water as a cheese grater. Citing the bible for obscure judgements on sexual behavior is the same as citing it for its rationale for slavery, racism, women's abuse, and a whole plethora of things that we don't use it to consider anymore. Most disturbing about Dr. Duke's argument is that societies do not or should not interpret the Bible, that what was written thousands of years ago is set in stone for Christianity. The foundation of modern American society, from the morals of our nation that have elected Mr. Barack Obama president to the technology that we're having this internet discussion on, has been built by people that have been considered heretical for one biblical reason or another. If people are so anxious to apply every literal tenant of the bible, I suggest they toss their computers out the window, stop watching TV, decline any advanced technology care in a hospital, don't eat anything that doesn't grow in their back yard and use their fireplaces for their central heating. All of these technological conveniences were born of heresy -
and If you're such a good Christian as to supposedly condemn one group of sinners, I suggest for consistency's sake that you condemn them all, historical and current.
If you're not so inclined to do that, you could try embracing gay marriage for what it really means - a bond of love between two people, as strong as any heterosexual bond. I think it's fairly safe to say that Jesus would be proud of anyone's loving commitment to a person, regardless of their naturally born sexuality.
~A college student
I believe that most dictionaries define sodomy as the act of anal intercourse, but do not specify that it is between two men, and some sodomy laws do not define it as being between two men. And again, not all homosexuals engage in sodomy. Further, there are many things and behaviors mentioned in the Bible that are "condemned" that today are not considered "deviant" as some would like us to believe (e.g. eating shellfish, animals with cloven hooves, the taking of interest on financial loans, divorce, etc.) just to name a few simple ones. As for adultery, while many consider it a sin, some religions have until relatively recently (and some still do) condone bigomy, so how do we account for adultery in such situations? Personally, I don't condone adultery, but our society and many others do not put people to death for it. If we are to debate such issues, I feel it is important to stick to the facts as we KNOW them to be, not the way we MIGHT LIKE them to be. If you wish to argue the Bible, then argue the Bible . . . personal insults just won't cut it . . sorry!
Lesbians definitely do not engage in sodomy. Many straight couples do.
For those of us who are not Christians, this is entire discussion is offensive.
The bible is not relevant to our lives, and we want no part of it in our secular laws. I resent the intrusion of Christians in my life and in my face. This is not a theocracy - and if you want one, take a walk through the Middle East, or Tibet, and let me know how it's working there.
Preach whatever you wish in the confines of your homes and your churches.
Don't like homosexuals? Don't date one. Don't marry one.
Just mind your own business, and keep your bible to yourself.
If you are so offended, why bother to reply?
Thank you. This is exactly correct.
squirewestern, you shouldn't be surprised at know-nothingness being presented as news of import. Remember, this type of information is outcome based. The question is asked, "What do we desire as an outcome?" and an article written to promote it, scholarship be hanged.
I think it is a sin against intelligence to believe the bible is the actual word of god, but you don't see me trying to take away your right to be an idiot. The whole religious argument is beside the point. marriage is a governmental institution. By law the church and state are to be separated. Even if you believe what someone does is a sin, by law you still have to accept it. America is the land of the free. Churches are shooting themselves in the foot. The gays aren't going back in the closet, and the people who love and support them are not going to give in. Basically you can rejoice in your temporary victories, and then my generation can wait for you baby boomer's to die. America is built on the tradition of individual freedoms being expanded.
As proven in these posts, all world religions as creations of 'man' are embodiments of his/her guuilt/rage/desire/confusion - all a set of internal conflicts that cannot allow him/her to move from the lessons given from pieces of mythology (fables/folklore/The Bible/Koran/etc) to adulthood where living ethically hardly revolves around childrens' stories and is embedded in empathy for all, educated decision-making and a desire to see life be good for all people. Instead, all these people write in professing 'knowledge' of their God, of Jesus, of whatever spiritual entity it is that you are too naive to accept has a history of development far more complex than your ignorance and dependence can allow. I do not deny the existence of something grossly complex and magnificent in the beyond - but to attribute ourselves as significant to the grand workings of existence makes all of you far more sinful than a gay man's proclamation of love because you are pitiful in your own blind pride. The honest truth is that once you are done beating your wives, drinking to excess, passing judgment on others, misinforming your children (if you even pay attention to them), screwing your secretaries, shooting defenseless animals and cheating your taxes - you probably do need to apologize because to go to bed every night knowing that at your very barest, you are not interesting nor successful, not a good parent (as your children will remind themselves for many years to come), a barely acceptable worker and that history will eventually swallow you whole so that all remains is a checkmark on someone's hunt through the family tree - after all this, you need to feel better about yourself. That you are important, and history tells us that nothing is better for that (from The Bible to Mein Kampf) than the diminishment of an 'other', a population that you most certainly are not. Of course, these are the people Jesus celebrated in the good book, right? Prostitutes and thieves, outcasts and miscreants. Probably because they were far more interesting and (is this what you are afraid of?) worthy than you.
NIce try to get out of accepting the truth for fables however science fiction can not erase the truth. God made them male and female and he blessed them. If you really think sin can win against the rightiousness of God then enjoy the sci-fi world around before it crumbles. Sin is real and its wages are soon to be paid. Eternity will not be delayed. The Judgement is at hand. Love, truth, hope and peace await those who call on Jesus. Life and it more abundantly not money. Life or death. the choice is yours.
This "debate" concerning Gay Marriage and biblical inclusion has no validitiy unless you're debating the Author of the Bible. Otherwise, it's just two "human" view points. In order to fully understand the true meaning of God's intentions you have to be "Spirit led", giving way to obtaining a "servant's heart" as the Bible alludes to. As humans, we all love to parade our selfishness when we feel a "higher authority", in this case and most cases, is God's word and how He dictats that mankind, (which He created), will live a more fulfilled life. Mankind's "pride" in thinking "we" always know what's best has been and always will be the downfall of us, as it was in past generations. God's word doesn't force us to comply, but as is the case with all our chioces in life, we'll pay the price of our bad decisions and gather "rewards" for thinking out proper chioces and giving way to what God desires for us.
After communism fell, the right wing christians needed someone else to direct the nations hatred towards, and gays were the easiest target. You'lre probably tired of yet another blog posting on the issue, but here's mine:
http://www.halfbakedlunatic.com/post/2008/11/04/Same-Sex-Marriage-why-is-this-an-issue.aspx
As a Christian, I would like to make two points.
1. Since when do I need the government to tell me what "marriage" means? And why do I care if the government has a much broader interpretation than I do? Will my concept of marriage be undermined because someone else has a different concept? Religious people who obsess over what others think about these sorts of issues make me cringe.
2. Jesus said we should love our enemies. How much more should we love those who do us no harm and who have been oppressed by society? But to actually oppose homosexuals and perpetuate their oppression... That's so over the top, I don't think the New Testament even addresses it.
P.S. Condemning homosexuality while ignoring sex outside of marriage is hypocrisy. Solution: Judge not...
Excellant points junkmail6, thank you for sharing them!!
I suspect the only place in the bible that "God has declared" ANYTHING is in the words of Jesus. All other voices, however inspired, are still the words of fallible men and woman. To me, the silence of Jesus on this topic is deafening....... Also, homosexual is an adjective, not a noun.
If you feel that everything except direct quotation from Jesus is fallible, you may as well include Jesus' quotations as fallible, as they were recorded by men...
Also, it is mentioned that Jesus said and did many other things than the ones that were recorded, so who is to say that he never spoke on the subject? We simply have no record of it. However, if the Scriptures are all inspired by God, then God has left us a very clear mandate against homosexual behavior in the words of Paul. If you don't believe the Scriptures were inspired by God, than this article does not have much meaning for you.
liviticus 12:13....thall shall not smoke pole!!!
At least some people leaving comments are trying to be intelligent FATJOEY, even if they disagree... you should try it sometime.
Should have gotten a good Lutheran (LCMS) minister to back up the agument against gay relationships with scripture...
BobbyNY: "No one is born Gay, it is an acquired taste. Everyone keeps confusing rights with choices."
So, Bobby, when did you decide to be straight? Maybe you just haven't met the right guy yet!
So many male friends I have, but do not wish to make "love" to them. I Know it's seems hard for you to understand, but there are phases in our lives when we assimilate with different sexes at different ages. As a child you did not care who you played with, then you grew older and you preferred the guys. Later you got older, you wanted the girls. Again, then older and you want to hang with the guys once more. Then you gat nmarried, and now you want to hang with the guys again!!! Some folks face a state of arrested development....in one of these phases.
Being gay or straight is not a choice, it has NEVER been a choice. The only choice you face is whether to act on your desires or to repress them.
I bet the ones who argue loudest that being gay is a choice are the ones who are actually gay and choosing to repress their natural desires and live in the closet.
Come out, come out where ever you are!!
I must say, I was skeptical when I saw the title of the article and in Newsweek. But I was actually surprised that they presented a balanced piece on the matter. Usually, like Ms. Miller's article, it is slanted in one direction. Thank you for presenting the opposing view point by an obvious Biblical Scholar who takes the word of God seriously. The Bible is the final authority and speaks clearly against sin, including homosexual acts. But it also speaks clearly that if you repent from your sin, believe in Jesus and that he came and died for you and your sins you will be saved. As saved persons we then go and try and live holy lives in service to him, even thou we still have our sinful desires. As the Scholar said, I can not condone something that God has declared wrong. I can be more open to share Jesus with homosexual people. Jesus is the only answer to this whole issue.
