In the Diagnostic Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, put out by the American Psychiatric Association, Compulsive Shopping Disorder is categorized under "impulse control disorders." This means that compulsive shoppers tend to shop both frequently and randomly, often buying and returning items or seeking out purchases because they're on sale -- even it means spending beyond a budget. Emotionally, shopaholics report feeling "high" after they're done shopping, though they may feel anxiety or depression moments later.
