    Pretty sure the Crusades were over 800 years ago, before any of our ancestors came to America. I really find it hard to buy that argument. I think it's because of the whole "jihad" thing being perverted by some who follow the religion. "Let's face it", with a few exceptions, the whole Catholic v. Protestant wars thing kind of got old for Christians because they realized life was more sacred than land and learned to coexist after about 300 years. Some Muslims don't think that way. They don't value human life at all in some circumstances, so they use violence without a second thought.

    The violence in Somalia by the Somals will stop when they have a strong central government that can restore and maintain some sort of civil order.
    Then and only then can the socalled "Rich" western countries underpin the society with that great evil "Working Capital".
    When men and women can pay thier rent and feed the children with the rewards of a job will the type of violenc stop.
    This is just for common knowledge; U.S. Marines call themselves "GRUNTS" it is not a deragotory term; because Marines don't grunt under thier heavy load.
    Only when used by the suedo educated does it take on the conotation of an insult.
    No one respects his enemy more than A U.S> Marine.

    And what happens if it is the birds of prey who take us off the evolutionary charts? What if they are the ones that eat us and leave you to die alone. Pigs don't swim and I am pretty sure that a human being wouldnt either if they were blown to pieces. Intimidation does nothing to these people because they fight for what they believe is "the good of their country". America has commited worse crimes and continuously reaches into Africa with its influnce. War is just "controlled homicide". It was dumbed down so some idiots could understand what it means without runnning to a dictionary every other sentence. And let's face it, the only reason muslim countries are so violent today is because of your god cursed "holy" crusades.

    I've been there and engaged a number of them in battle during our occupation there.They are cowards and die easily. I say let them die pitiously out in the ocean like the pigs that they are....blown to pieces.

    The NATO and Saudi's need to start killing these pirates..and sending their heads back to their homes..then wipe out all their family's..right now they risk nothing..usually the Saudi's have backbone and teach them a lesson..that is what they need...to curb this..

    I am tired of countries like Somolia. They hide terrorists, enjoy killing Americans (Black Hawk down), and are basically in chaos all the time. I hate the thought of being the "World Police" but countries like this need to learn a lesson every so often... Put the smack down and teach these savages a lesson!

    If the Somalis were left to solve problems on their own for the past 20 years, they'd have been a better place today. Interventions direct or indirect sometimes make things worse, and the poor Somali people are paying the price.

    Lawlessness in Somalia is the mother of Armed Piracy. Once there is strong government in Somalia than Armed Piracy will disappear. Mean while, I believe piracy can be fought with the help of the Somalian seafarers who is against the piracy. The international ship owners avoid engaging those Somalian professionals who are in the side of Law and Order. Instead they engage for their security only to foreign security companies like blackwater worldwide, Secopex and Biscaglia. We can make better work with less payment and that encourages also the young sea farers and will be a model for all. I graduated from Somalian technical teachers, educated in France(Saint-Malo, Nantes) got Master mariner from Chalmers technical university in Sweden, have M Sc., in Maritime Management from Chalmers, would like jointly with other security companies or ourselves to fight against piracy, but give us chance to do that.     scmit, could you kindly tell me which rock you live under or, at least reveal to me the impenetrable materials of the plastic bubble you live in? America had it's share of civil wars....rebellions....seizing ships and tossing the tea cargo overboard...even the war on slavery was brutal. A victim is a victim, plain and simple. It is how you perceive the situation that may well advance you into areas of logical resolutions. You obviously are out of touch. Truthfully, if you don't care "about the how or why" of the Somalians, then how can you honestly assess a turnaround positive resolution....People like you are so quck to condemn and so slow to praise. I am sure what those new englanders did back in the day certainly catapulted this NATION to rise up and come together, but remember, the genesis of the situation was a CRIME itself.....the Infamous Boston Tea Party!

      And one more thing, to compare the murder or ransom of unarmed boat pilots to the Boston Tea Party is a perfect example of what a truly self entitled, uneducated, anti-American you are. The men of the Tea Party had a greater end in mind and it was not an anarchist move to gain wealth in the absence of industry. It was a statement against import taxation. The men of the Tea Party did not troll around preying on the weak. Theirs was a protest. Somali pirates aren't protesting, they're perpetrating international terrorism and piracy. I suppose people of your "ilk" wouldn't mind paying more taxes to support them and clean it all up. I on the other hand would like to see this country cleaned up first. Perhaps starting with helping you pack up and move to Somalia, or better yet take a cruise on one of the next ships that are taken by the pirates. Idiot.

      I'm quick to condemn self righteous, bleeding hearts like yourself. The rock I live under is right next to yours. My position is not out of touch, but rather very in tune with a part of the populous that is tired of your drivel about "positive turnaround". The positive turnaround will happen when more people decide to live with a value system, morals, codes of conduct, self respect, dignity, ethics and other things you obviously do not value. Too much of this country is ready to give people a pass for anything. Given the right circumstances I too might become a pirate or a terrorist. If that were the case, however, I would expect to eventually pay a price for that. Unless of course I could run to America, or people like yourself, and expect to be taken care of and granted immunity because we are full of a bunch of brown beaten, politically correct, pussified, middle of the road, down with the man, birckenstock wearing, pot smoking, over educated, under achieving, passive aggressive, "it's all good", pushovers.

    Brand Nubian's comment is an example of why this article, American journalism, and Americans in general are their own worst enemy. Any discussion/dialogue focusing on understanding these pirates will eventually turn them into victims; of poverty, government, etc. Soon it will be America's fault, or at least our responsibility to clean up. I don't care about the "how" or "why" of what these people are doing. They are nothing more than murderous cowards and should be executed the moment they are encountered. Even calling them pirates affords some small amount of story book-protagonist hero status. Call them what they are and treat them accordingly. Most important, no quarter shall be given until they self govern enough to stop these attacks.

I don't have to physically be in Iraq to understand warfare....There is a war going on here in America and the cannons are aimed directly at our youths....13 year olds gunning down 16 year olds with lugers clipped with dumb~dumb bullets to blow a nice silver
    dollar sized hole in the human body....I'm all set with the warfare....I seen it with my own eyes here in America...Guns don't kill people, people do! And many war veterans have found themselves locked up in the concrete and steel american bear traps due to drug abuse and PTSD chronic symptoms. So, excuse me, I find the pen (or my keyboard) far more powerful than a loaded rifle...you see, maybe I can reach you after all...the pen is indeed mightier than the sword.
