Why is this guy telling where & HOW they pick up the ransom $$$$$? Everyone is out here getting it how they live, so I see why they jacking ships but why is this guy telling where they pick up the ransom $$$$$? His explainations are understandable, but not legal so there's no point trying to get the people to side with pirates. People sell crack to feed their 9mth old when there's no work but though it's a shame, they still going to jail if they get arrested with it. There's two wrongs fighting & this guy is just a snitch.

Perhaps these pirates are simply doing to us what we have been doing to them for hundreds of years. The wheel has come full circle.

These pirates have nothing to do with us. They are simply "bad men" commiting "bad acts". How can you truly justify this? Their "circle" is criminal and if you can say they are doing what they've been forced into doing, then I guess Ted Bundy and others like him would be justified as well. These pirates are cruel and callous men with no sense of right or wrong. There are a lot of poor people in this world who don't turn to theft and murder.

To 61185. Your a moron! Do you think that the U.S. or any other country does business legaly? We are the biggest crooks this world has ever seen. It is survival of the fit. ot survival of the ethical. You don't know this because your twiddling your thumbs at work thinking life is all hunky dory. Wake up moron!

I appreciate the courage of the reporter that brought us this report. The intellegence of the pirate interviewed is obvious and his (their desperation palable. This is not a justification, it is an understanding of what harsh conditions produce. The United States is a great country and we should take note of what desperation can do to the talented and intellegent, the depths of our financial crisis, which has not been reached may inspire such desperation. I am of the mind that our conditions are understood, but still treated as a game by poloticians and the media and if the common man is not effected he doesn't care.

To Stonehenge: Keep stating and holding onto your self-loathing crybaby view of life. It is amusing to observe. The more dopes like you that believe such idiocy, the more you all become helpless and weak. "The wheel has come full cicle???". What are you talking about? Maybe you and your family have larcenous or pirate blood in your lineage. Are your related to Blackbeard? Most people do not have hereditary links to Pirates nor have they partaken in murder and mayhem. If this is not the case with you, that's too bad. Though we feel sorry for you, don't expect any rational or contributing member of society to give a crap about your twisted world. When you say "what we have doing to them", the truth is that you may have been doing something; no bodt I know of has done anything to deserve a hijacking. Maybe if you turn yourself into them, they will put you on a spit with an apple in your mouth. When the last ounce of your flesh is swallowed, the Poirates will sit back, satiated, and ponder how the world is now right. Your sacrifice will have evened the score and the "wheel will have completed a full revolution". Good riddance to another self-righteous weakling.

Two points made by the "Terrorist Pirate Leader" that concerns me is one, he said evil is the solution, and he has no problem doing it. Two he is searching for a luxury liner because that is the mother load. It will take the hijacking of a cruise ship before the rest of the world stand up to these twisted criminals. The world solution is a simple one. Blockade Somalia, and destroy every vessel that attempts to break the blockade. It will take a world effort, but it can be done. Let them turn their rage inward toward the government and rebels that are the cause of their problems. It's time for the U.S. and the world to stop pandering, and start plundering them in the same way they are determined to do the rest of the world.

Seems to me that a signicant percentage of Islamic people are becoming more embolden. For whatever reason there are more flare-ups around the world that evolves muslims. I believe that Thomas Jefferson had the right idea, when he sent american ships to the shores of Islamic pirtate home bases. He intercepted the highjacking that was going on in shipping trade routes in the 1700s. Despite monetary appeasements by the U.S., in hopes of stopping high sea vadalism of american ships, the Islamic thugs took the money and continued to do what they do, take by force what they want. The only thing that these type of people respect is force. Anything less is seen as an opportuntiiy to conquer. the United States need to wake up to this fact, and forgo the "Lets try and understand them". This is what they have done throughout history, Jews and Christians and anyone else who do not worhip their god, Allah are infidels and are not worthy of equal respect as muislims, therefore they can be treated anyway these deranged type of muslims choose.

The present Somali government is intalled by the US through the invasion by the Ethiopian army backed by the US after ovethrowing the democratically elected government. This is the similar situation as the democratically elected FIS in Algeria. The US administration has got the Islamophobia all instigated by Israel. The US however has found an opportunity in the pirate crisis because this will be used as an excuse for a direct US military presence in the region instead of having Ethiopia as the US proxy. (Ethiopia has got its own problems to solve)

Why not the EU, US, NATO, CHINA, INDIA and others make immediate cessation of illegal fishing in Somali Territorial Waters as part of their mandate? They are there partly to protect their citizens who are engaged in illegal and environmentally criminal activities in Somali Territorial waters.

are you guys all live on earth? america alone have thousands of those armed to the neck pilotless flying machines. It doesnt take a big brain to understand how easy it would be to employ them and 1-destroy them 2- find out every single of of thems location. Thats all it take so, why not only they dont care about it and second why is that the pirate in that interview is saying american release us after they capture un and they are our freinds? you just put 2 and 2 together, there is something more important going on behind the scene and I bet its a plan planted by US for some political reasons. the pilotless planes is just one of the things. now a day all the ships are being coordinated through gps, they all can be seen from the sky. dont you think when they have the list of every single ships going through that routs, they can easily identify any additional ship or boat and even they can easily see their boat name and the peoples faces and arms they carry etc etc. this is the bigest US and/or others inhumain and fradulent plan to be part of hijacking and piracy. just think, if i can think of those plains, the NSI,FBI,CIA etc etc would know and could do much better than me. its some kind of plan and i promiss, sooner or later reporters would find the truth behind it. by the way the Iranian gov also today sent a warship to that erea.

I'm sorry, i know this stuff is criminal and wrong, and it should be stopped, but it is so awesome. I love reading about the pirates. Its probably some of the coolest new stories of the year. Now some of you might respond to this, just remember i think its really wrong too, just awesome. Like Darth vadar

What's needed is a modern day Q-Ship. Fake a manifest out of Europe, mention gold or something. Have some very well equipped, hard, tough men pose as crew. Arm them, and keep a pig or two onboard.

The pirates always attack at night. The men are ready for them. After they totally blow the pirates out of the water, they make sure one is alive. They wrap the poor *** in pig entrails and drop him off at the beach. He goes back to his pirate boss, and then they consider a career posing as pirates at Tokyo Disneyland.

All it would take is ten tramp-steamers, hobo-boats, whatever with juicy manifests. Equip the boats with 10 squads of men, total manpower would be no more than 150 men for the missions...when enough pirates experienced the tables being turned, it would slow dramatically. The trick would be to instill FEAR in the pirates...is this boat a trap? Will I make it? Do I like the taste of bacon?

I guarantee this would solve the problem in a few months. A consortium of nations could contribute -- true international effort. The time has come.

A sea-going Trojan Horse with mini-guns and 50 cal's. A very good scenario. It would work for a spell, but you need a list of contingency plans because the Somali is crafty enough to recognize bait after a while and would change tactics.

  • Posted By: UVATeddy @ 12/19/2008 10:02:19 PM

Shamun is intelligent, crafty, and admits that they are willing to "commit heinous acts of destruction". These are desparate terrorists operating from a lawless nation and practicing a criminal act once punishable by death. I don't know exactly how much they've received in Ransom but it probably approaches Somalia's GNP and yet it's being spent on their personal lifestyle, and much is probably in private numbered accounts in a "neutral' country. I've not heard of a single penny for humanitarian aid for their countrymen; Robin of Locksley lives in Sherwood Forest, not Somolia.
Protecting ships at sea is an admirable goal but nearly impossible given the expanse of ocean. I see 3 ways to halt this international terrorism: 1) Have UN forces retore law and order withing Somolia (oops, that is almost impossible and the time frame is extreme); 2) Divert ALL shipping thereby removing the targets of opportunity (expensive but feasible); and 3) let the UN grow a spine, assemble a multinational Special Ops force, wipe out their strongholds, and imprison as many as possible. Imagine the impact of a night assault by combined units of US Army Rangers, Navy SEALS, British SAS, the equivalent from EU and other nations, and elite units of the 82nd Airborne and 101st Air Assault Divisions. Simultaneous strikes from sea and air, preceded by a night parachute drop behind their lines to completely envelope and squeeze them. SEAL units could secure the imprisoned ships as othe units strike at the heart of theit "entertainment complexes". Yes, there will be some loss of life and property, but it's time to end this c**p once and for all.

all the evils are coming from the Shoe man's leadership (Bush), because he threatened all the world to keep silent and the world ignored the Somali people.
we heard only what the pirates did, but why the US, UN, EU and NATO are not ready to listen the pirates who were forced to do this evil action, why none of them is ready to punish the illegal fishery companies and those who dump the Nuclear wastes in the shore.
The unfair COUNTER PIRACY redolution from the UN will never succeed as long as the young desperate men feel abused and neglected.

While I have no reason to doubt that the men of Somalia would rather go towards typical jobs I have a hard time believing that trying to prevent people from attacking ships passing through the waters around (sometimes not even near) their shores is wrong or illegal. The Pirates should stop attacking those who have no attachment to their plight.

Not only is this guy more intelligent than a lot of politicians he is more honest. He's not pretending to be some islamic freedom fighter. He's a thief and he admits it. That was the best interview I have ever read from Newsweek

Piracy of Somalia is stipulated by economic reasons ... an unemployment and unarchy in this country force people to find other engagement ... to compare , a damage caused by foreign companies as a result of illegal fishery in Somalia waters was around $300 million in 2007 while the total buyout recived by the pirates was around $100 mln ... I think it is time for international community to put the things on right tracks in Somalia ... As to Ukrainian vessel carrying the military cargo to Kenya , I wonder why the name of cargo owner is not still disclosed ?

    • Posted By: John_Toradze @ 12/19/2008 4:12:00 PM

See: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MV_Faina the owners and registry are no mystery. The Somalis are helping themselves to a natural resource off their shores. Oh, well. I'm not fussed really. We have much bigger fish to fry than this.
