This article deeply upsets me. As a current college student I thrive on sparks often times as an after school drink. They're perfect as a quick pick me up if your feeling drowsy and the best part is you can choose you're alcohol content by selecting either the orange, blue, or black can ( black is always the favorite when it comes to my friends and I.) I sent out a forwarded text to my fellow sparks lovers and recieved back many grievences to the news, except for my one friend who claims they give her heartburn. Putting aside the sometimes uncomfortable sideeffects, sparks is by far the best non-hard alcoholic beverage and you can best believe I'll be going to the store and stocking up on as many six-packs as I can fit in my fridge and mini fridge and freezer. So take the advice of the writer of this article and go out and try one, you won't be dissapointed.

ohhh jozev - cigs don't cause as many fatal car crashes -- have to disagree with you there.
anyhoo -- funny article -- i never heard of sparks, but it's like any good thing -- once you find a fav of something -- the company has to take it off the market. this has happened a couple of times with my perfumes -- really, realliy good stuff!!
it's maddening when you get hooked on something and the rug of consumerism is pulled right out from under you and you have to go and find a new fav! ha-ha!

It's about time! Oh, I know some of you all out there wil be flaming and attacking me, but tough s**t! I've got a 12 & 1/2 year old that has been pestering me for a few years now that he wants to get energy drinks. I've always told him 'no'. Then I noticed an article in the paper about things called 'Alco-pops'. I went to a local convience store and checked out the lables on all of the energy drinks. Now I'm really glad I told him 'no'. He used that age old argument that 'Everybody drinks them!' Although after making him read the backs of the cans, and searching for the real tiny print, he read that they weren't 'for young children or women who are pregnant'. It's there, one just has to really look. I'll even answer some questions some of you might have, I'm 42 almost 43. Mother to 3 boys ages 21, 12 & 1/2 and 7. Married 22 years. I can count on one hand all of the alcohol drinks I had during my high school years, it was 2 and the ones who had them didn't tell me they weren't just drinking soda pop (one was Jack Daniels & Coke) and they were one swallow each. While married I think I've had probably what would amount to one or two drinks a year, with a few years that I was sick I gave up alcohol totally. Guess what?? I survived!! Now I know I'll have people out there call me a liar and they're entitled to their opinion. But it was way more fun, and profitable, to be the designated driver. It might have also helped that my dad was a policeman and the officers all knew me. Believe me or not, but even if I weren't a parent I think it's low for those companies to willingly and knowingly market these so-called energy drinks towards kids. Shame on them!! I will give MillersCoors kudos for at least starting to effect some change. It is a start. Now will they, and the rest, go all the way and step up? Doubt it. But I can and will continue to hope that they will 'grow-up'!
    Peace!
    p.s. let the flaming begin........

This is really a diaster. I start every night out with two sparks before I switch over to beer. Sparks kept me going in Vegas, and many of my Summer nights that I was partying every night. Tell Miller to grow some balls, and keep Sparks on the market. I don't care about what risks it has. Tobacco companies can keep cigarettes on the market, but Sparks is too unsafe? This country is going to ***

i think this is rediculious,im 40 years old and realy like sparks,so its not just a kids drink. As far as underaged drinkers go they shouldnt be consuming it any way.the problem is the people selling it to them or purchasing it for minors.its not something miller has done wrong,or should be punished for,nor us avid spark drinkers.this is not going to change a dam thing the youth will still consume there alcohol, just like the old days .we used to just mix our own and take it to class, park etc.i dont see how these schools that say kids are taking it to class like it was just another energy drink, hey bozos its clearly labled 6%alcohol by volume on the can.i think they should have made facilty and others aware of this product to prevent this from happening and not sueing millercoors and depriving us legal sparks drinkers of a beverage we enjoy.well i guess i ll have to resort back to my mixed drinks made of hard alcohol ,not beer. And too all the 13 states and san francisco you havent stoped jack ship....... by getting rid of sparks. Why dont you focus on the real problems at hand .sparks youll be missed, thanks to a bunch of morons.

    good bye from sparky

WOW I can remember when I was 19-20 years old we drank wine coolers, malt beer, and whatever we could get our hands on. For as long as this world keeps going around, teens will find liquor. What happen.... that we need to care what it looks like or comes in. As for me, I had my fair share liquor when i was 19-20 in the 80s and I am just fine....Drink Up People, Just dont drive.

Dear Folks, I went to a party in Las Vegas where they served Sparks and they had models on roller-skates and the party went all night. I had a couple and then switched back to Coors Light. The next morning I flipped on the TV to see a 737 crashing into the World Trade Center. Co-incidence, nah, but I think about it whenever I see a can of Sparks. RIP.

Dear heavens: I hope christopherkidwell doesn't plan to have children any time soon. If he/she does, I really hope he/she does some reading on the effects of alcohol on child development. If ever there was a poster child for a lobotomy........

ha it can be proven over and over again not only by our own psychologists and the running examples of less-regulated countries that the government "banning" ANYTHING is completely ludicrous. shall i point to guns, abortions, elicit drugs, as well as alcohol. ALL OF THESE ARE AND WILL FOREVER BE EASILY AVAILABLE. laws will never do anything but ruin the lives of the victims of an abusive culture. stop relying on politicans to fix ur world. step up and set an example, raise your kids to have a mind of their own. its all about treatment; NOT PROSECUTION!

    • Posted By: PennsyltuckyMike @ 12/20/2008 7:25:43 PM

Hokiepoke is right! I'm just gonna go and mix up some bathtub Sparks right now. Now, where did I put that Taurine?

There isn't really a 'problem' with underage drinking. The problem is that we are not exposing children to reasonable drinking very early, giving them a example with their parents and teaching them to drink responsibly by monitoring their intake as children.
Yes, that does mean that I am saying that children should be allowed to drink.... when there are parents or other figures around them to make sure that they are not drinking too much.

Come on everyone lets not turn this Spark funeral into a Political debate. Just remember the good times we all had with Sparks! We are gonna have to fill the void now with something, red bull and vodka just doesn't have the same kick as our dear friends Sparks did, so I highly recommend Absinthe and Red Bull but make sure you wear a helmet before hitting the town on that combination.

Swanman - What definition of socialism leads you to this conclusion? If anything, you can point to social conservatives for having these beverages removed from the shelves. This is ironic, since it is also the social conservatives that created the taboo around under-21 alcohol consumption that gave drinks like this a market in the first place.

Swanman - How do you equate this to any definition of socialism? If anything, you can point to the social conservatives for having these "alcopops" pulled from the shelves. It is also social conservatism that has created the taboo around alcohol consumption for those under 21 that helped create a market for these beverages to begin with. Most other developed countries have lower age limits for the consumption of alcohol, but experience far fewer alcohol-related problems among teens.
