If I want to screw a hooker or smoke a doobie, how does that harm you? I'll tell you how -- it harms you in that I would have to break laws to do either of those, and if I was caught I would be incarcerated. I would be living off of your tax dollars then, no different than the welfare recipients who can't find good jobs. One more person living off the system. Conservatives never want to face realities like that when they rant and rave about normal human behavior, and want more criminal punishments. Sure, just build more jails, maybe that will stimulate the real estate market. Let's convert some of that unsellable real estate into more prisons for the fornicators and the leaf smokers. You know, all those people who are different than you, all of those nonconformists that don't worship at your church and don't belong in your ideal society.

There are all sorts of benefits from taxing the world's oldest profession. It isn't going away.
    1. Become licensed - just like liquor.
    2. It can be taxed.
    3. Regulations can make it safer, requiring health checkups inluding drug tests.
    4. It can be zoned.
Not all forms need to be licensed [e.g. street walkers]. Prohibiting prostitution is no more successful than prohibiting alcohol, it just forces it into a world more apt to be involved in other criminal activity.

Prostitution and the illegal street drug trade is really the same issue. Just like people have always paid for sex, people have always shared plants with their friends that they know will give them a buzz if they eat, smoke, sniff, or injest it in some fashion. The criminalizing of normal human behavior is what leads to the problems, not the normal behavior itself. All you bible thumpers can throw stones all you want, but let's see you claim you are without what your bible would refer to as "sin".

The fact that something as immoral as this is never going to stop, doesn't make it right to encourage/condone/endorse it by making it legal. No one would consider doing the same for murder or robbery (though both of these are of a different class/level, I think my point is made). It should continue to be condemned by all. The reason it's still prevalent today is because this country is full of double standards and is hypocritical. How can there be legal brothels in Nevada and Rhode Island and then you say no to prostitution elsewhere. Making pornographic films is lawful (aren't the actors getting paid for sex like prostitutes). Etc, etc, etc. All these make it hard to take the laws against prostitution seriously. When these hypocrisies cease to exist, getting rid of prostitution will be easier.

    • Posted By: roamy9 @ 12/20/2008 8:04:45 AM

In Rhode Island, the act of prostitution is legal as long as it happens in a private residence, but street solicitation and operating a brothel are illegal...which I think is messed up. Several people can live in a residence, prostitute in their home, and it is not a brothel as long as you don't "advertise" or solicit?

Prostitutin is ageless and it is known as a temptation to sin, but it is a temptation of humanity. Many do have sex before marriage it was just not talked about like it is today. As long as people can have sex, as long as there are humans, "appropriate" sexual intercourse is always going to be a hot topic of debate and people will do it. Making it legal just makes it easier to expose, to regulate it(though some people cannot control the use), and see more issues in the open- it also can create new research and jobs to help people with those problems. So if they do make prostitution legal, then pimps would have to be legal and regulated too as well as everything else. Trafficking would have boundaries, age, limites, and standardization/regulation. Would sex trafficking be less of a problem? Would they all come out of the woodworks as independent contractors and all of a sudden straighten up, fly right and abide by the rules? The point is, as long as humans are around, there is going to be someone somewhere who wants to sell sex for money and they will find a way if it is legal or not. And if some aspect of it is illegal, some will try to gain from that anyway. We all know that a person who does illegal things, just might find different ways to do the illegal anyway even if some of it is legalized. That is part of the human condition too.

But I will say this again: Just because someone sells themselves for sex, does not mean they deserve to be mistreated, abused, or raped. A prostitute who is raped has the same emotional and physical trauma as someone who was raped who does not sell themselves for sex. Is their emotional state less important than someone with a legal job? No, it is not any different.

I think if it is not legalized, it is fantasized anyway. I think it would make some things better, some worse, and light up the areas where the real problems are. At least, law enforcers would have more time for those kinds of cases and have a bureau investigating places to make sure they are within the laws established, such as a bar, legal brothel, dating service etc. It would create more jobs for health officials in quality control and assurance, open up new jobs all over in different areas of life too. There are so many aspects to discuss with this topic. And even more when you get into morality, ethics, religion, etc. And as long as people are around, there will always be these kinds of debates.

Pt. 2 of 2 Its time to take the decsions and the money out of the hands of the legal system that so financially gains from overburdened judicial and prson systems. Legalize the activities, use the savings where the monies are WAY better spent (just killing the economy of drugs would DRAMATICALLY reduce requirements for prison space and the resultant expenditures, assuming we act to kill the economy of it...make the supply CHEAP and take KILL the economic incentive for its exploitation and the large amount of sedondary crime resulting from individauls commiting crimes for supporting their habits likewise disappear!) If we use our heads instaed of our narrow-minded moralistic base to make better decisions on how to handle these issues, we can make the lives of ALL parties dramatically better.

Pt. 1 of 2 We're way to Puritan in our roots for our own good. Its time to gorw up as a society. This commodity is available in virtually every state in the country, in every country on the face of the Earth. It has been since time immemorial. The old saying of not learning from history us to repeat it stands...prohibition created an underground, illegal, violent underground supply-demand driven economy iwth alcohol. The same happens with other illegal activies, drugs and prostitution. This leads to opportunities for indivisuals to exploit the 'commodity' for personal gain, and in the case of slaves or sex-workers, the individuals. Legalizing it protects ALL parties by making 'above' ground what illegalizing it does by driving it undergroud. If a legal supply of an item exists, you remove the incentive and opportunity for individuals to exploit them for personal gain by enabling control of its economics. You protect society by dictating who can do what, under what conditions. Disease and exploitation can be imnimized. We've never successfully eliminated it and we never will. LIcensing can be used to resolve these issue, who setting to whom it is given, with testing, etc.

The other consideration is economic. Again, this applies to both drugs and sexaul activities. The government(s) of our country, on all levels, DO NOT HAVE THE MONEY or resources to successfully monitor, prosecute and incarcerate indivduals for all the social evils our Puritanical populace love to become so bent out of shape regarding. It COSTS MONEY to chase, prosecute and incarcerate people!!!!! I'd rather through license and regulation monitor and regulate activities for minimizing damage and encouraging safety, removing $ from those who are likely to produce harm in society....and spend the VAST amount of money diverted into NON PRODUCTIVE legal channels (lawyers, police, PRISONS), and put those monies into our financially teetering systems of MEDICAL CARE, SOCIAL SECURITY and EDUCATION. For example, while I lack the specific figure(s), in Califnoria we're running a deficit largetr than the economies of many countries!!! We do this while we're under icnreasing pressure to build more prisons with MOENY WE DON'T HAVE!!!! This again applies to drugs and prostitution in spades, where our legal system drives up prison populations to oen of the largest on the planet, for one of the richest society's on the planet...now driving us towards poverty, as we continue to WAY outspend vs. our income (in government for purposes of this rant...).

I agree completly that Prostitution should be Legalised because I would prefer an Honest Cash Transaction to the Farce that dating is.

    • Posted By: hammerofthor @ 12/20/2008 8:00:14 AM

You know it. If you buy the other person enough shiny baubles, then maybe you'll get sex on one of your dates. Some people work as prostitutes in a brothel, others get jobs at your office and date all the rich guys until one makes a high enough offer for their services. If there is a difference, I don't see it.

Anyone who thinks prostitution is ever going to go away is absolutely delusional. Prostitution, as we all know, is "the oldest profession", which literally means that the very first transaction between two human beings that we would recognize as a job was one person offering sex and the other person offering some form of payment for the sex. This is an inherent, biological fact of human behavior. You can no more stop this than you could stop people breathing, or criminalize the consumption of food.

As we continue to have mass layoffs across our country, and the entire global economy continues to crash, what do you think people are going to do to earn money? Some will turn to prostitution as a guaranteed source of income -- recession proof, for sure. It should be taxed and regulated like any other business, because it is always going to be a business whether anyone likes it or not. Bring in some more tax dollars via the prostitution business, and maybe we can start working on that trillion dollar deficit we have, before China sends warships over here to collect on the money we owe them.

Hammerofthor, you obviously have a hard time separating unwarranted brain activity from logical thinking.

    • Posted By: hammerofthor @ 12/20/2008 7:45:37 AM

(third try on this stupid site)

You must have a hard time facing the real world, preferring to read your bible and hoping that the fantasies you read there will come true. Out here in the real world, we deal with real issues. One of those issues is the fact that prostitution has always been a way for women to earn a living, all the way back to the time when we lived in caves and cavewoman offered herself to caveman in exchange for the food he brought back at the end of the day.

    • Posted By: hammerofthor @ 12/20/2008 7:41:48 AM

Actually I have an easy time separating fact from fantasy. You know, the kind of fantasy you bible thumpers try to teach us when we are children, before we grow up and learn about the real world. I also paid attention in history class, something you neglected in favor of bible school.

Wow, I was wondering when this would be brought up. I live in Europe where Prostitition is legal. The Working Gals/Guys all see a Medical Dr every month to be sure they're free of diseases, if they get ill, they MUST see a Dr and are pulled off the Job until they are cleared by the Dr. The Business is treated just like any Job.... And know what? Rapes don't occur as frequently as they do where Prostitution is illegal...

If people want to sell their own bodies it should be their choice. There is no reason for laws against prostitution other than the govenment knows it will be too hard to regulate taxes on activities like this. This is the same reason marijuana is not legal. It is not a matter of public safety, it is a matter of government control. The citizens of the United States should stop being such pussies and take their rights back.

Maybe they should have considered a different line of work. Why is it people go into dangerous jobs and then want tax payers to pay for their protection, testing, OSHA standards. It's ridiculous. After being in education for 20 years and being threatend by high school student number 100+ I got out, however, I never asked anyone at the school to protect me. I handled it myself. When you've had enough, get out!

Some people would say that marriage is legalized prostitution. Certainly, if you go back a few generations to when women could not vote, own property, or have jobs, the woman had no way to find a means of financial support other than offering her body to a man. Now, the holy rollers like bf08 will tell you that their holy book commands a subservient role for women, and they should stay in their place, barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen. No jobs for them, legal or illegal.

  • Posted By: pattycakes36 @ 12/20/2008 7:26:04 AM

I believe that prostitution should be legal and for two reasons. 1 - now they are on the tax roll and must pay taxes on their earning because they would need a business license to operate as a prostitute and 2 - they would have mandatory screenings for communicable disease that would be required for their license renewal.

  • Posted By: toenes @ 12/20/2008 6:38:40 AM

bf08 you are out of your mind. Comparing child porn to prostitution is apples n oranges. Two different things entirely!! One makes their own choice the other (the child) is taken advantage of. One last thing, killing the prostitute for "charging to much" is laughable. Otherwise i think every doctor and lawyer would be killed. Now there's legal prostitution at its finest!

  • Posted By: Therese in NV @ 12/20/2008 4:16:39 AM

Although, I am against prostitution from an ethical point of view; I am also realistic. Prostitution isn't going to stop, no matter how many "Johns" are arrested and "Hookers" arrested in police stings. With that in mind, we must look at this industry from a safety and income point of view. Legalizing Prostitution will ensure prostitutes are healthy and current on their medical exams and health card; legalized prostitution will reduce illegal "sex slaves" brought to this country to work in underground massage and sex shops around the country; legalized prostitution will allow these sex workers more protection from attack and abuse under the law; plus, as in other countries, legalized prostitution provides a source of taxable income that local and state government can use. Men & Women in the Sex Industry will answer to their Maker after their death. In the mean time, it is not for us to judge and be prudish over an industry we cannot stop and continues to flourish across the nation. Prostitution has been around since the time of Adam, it is a little late to try to change human nature at this point.

    • Posted By: Cerious @ 12/20/2008 6:08:09 AM

WOW, the first realistic view I have seen here!

For the rest of you- they don't call it "the world's oldest profession" for nothing. It has always been around and always will be! Germany made it legal and taxable. It worked out pretty well for them- the women are safer (from both disease and violence). Why does everyone want to raise the moral question? Are they afraid for what THEY might do? Otherwise, leave other people to their own choices. If you are worried about it bringing down the values of someone you know, perhaps you need to take a closer look at that person. If you are afraid of it taking down the values of your children, perhaps you need to look at yourself. If given good values, your kids will make the good choices. So what are you afraid of?

My friend you are an intellectual nightmare. Did you read anything in my previous two posts? And to answer your question, most people that view prostitution as bad would also consider free anonymous sex to be wrong.
