This article is a burning sign of the terrible times in which we are living. If there were a moral center in the universe, this world would be so far away from it, it would be in another dimension. It is utterly depressing beyond words to see how depraved and filthy the human race has become. And it doesn't surprise me that such evil should go hand-in-hand with ignorance and thoughtlessness. First of all, were any of you around during "the time of Adam?" I don't think so. What a stupid thing to say that prostitution has been around since the time of Adam. Not to mention it's pretty contradictory to say that you believe in the existence of Adam, thusly implying that you believe in the Abrahamic God, then going on to say that prostitution is acceptable.

The logic people are using to rationalize prostitution is so idiotic and careless, it is embarrassing to read such comments. For instance, it has been suggested that because prostitution has been around for a long time and since it's not going away, we should just stop fighting it and accept it so we can make some money off of it. Do you know what else has been around forever and will never stop? MURDER. So let's just admit that we can't prevent murder and legalize it. Just think of all the tax revenue the government would get from everyone who claims "murder contractor" as their profession when they file their tax returns. Some hit-men can make a good 20-grand or more for killing a single person! And if it's legalized, the poor innocent mobsters, assassins, and other life-takers would feel more comfortable in going to the police when they get assaulted by targets who fight back when someone's trying to kill them. Right now, with our anti-murder laws, those poor guys have to hide out and be all sad because we've created an atmosphere that makes them uncomfortable when they kill people. It's just so unfair to those lowly littler murderers :-(

Here's the neat thing. Once we open the door for things like prostitution and accept it as a means of collecting huge taxes, we can let other industries into the fold as well. Take for instance child porn. I bet the government could get a lot of revenue out of those guys! I mean people will never stop filming themselves raping children and selling the videos, so why fight it, right? Good logic there, you bunch of geniuses.

Sometimes we have to try to have our cake and eat it too. I wouldn't want prostitution to be fully legalized, because of the increase in activity cited in the article, but without getting too technical, it could be decriminalized without being legalized, like a traffic offence. Law enforcement all over the world routinely ignores or postpones action on minor infractions if they believe this can lead them to more potent criminal activity. At worst the act of solicitation itself is worthy of nothing more than a parking ticket and could be controlled in the same way, by the civil authorities. No arrests, no criminal record, just a ticket, as long as the offender is carrying personal ID, which could also be a means of controlling the flow of undocumented workers. This change from criminalization to a civil infraction would then allow law enforcement to work undercover without having to wink at an othewise arrestable offences. Free from fear of arrest, a permanent rap sheet, and public humiliation, the prostitutes would be free to reveal, in the required privacy of the "act", coercion and abuse by johns and pimps as well. Knowing that they would not be getting friends in trouble they would also be able to pass on third person information; about underage victims, trafficking, abuse, and kidnapping. In this way law enforcement could seriously get deep into stopping the pervasive victimization which by all reports is rampant in what is sometimes described as a victimless crime.

How about not looking at if it would be safer, but look at the revenue that would be created by legalizing prostitution. As it stands it is illegal to be paid for sex, so anyone conducting such a transaction is not going to report it as a taxable income. No income and the person is on welfare or unemployment. So not only are they not contributing to the IRS, they are defrauding the government and causing higher taxes!
Make it legal and collect the taxes and stop organized crime at the same time. We all would be safer!!!

My father went to work for a Japan/American business after World War II. He often had to spend time in Japan. He said that their were places were a man could sit in hot tubs surrounded by beautiful women, who would bath them, massage and pamper them. He could not wait for his return trips to Japan. All of these activities were closely regulated buy the government. Fatuous1@hotmail.com

Prostitution should be legalized and regulated by the government. Prostitutes should have to pay taxes like everyone else aand held to the highest health standards as any other health care provider. Being a drug addict should not be the primary reason for becoming a prostitute, nor should being a gay man in denial be a reason for becoming a priest. Prostitution is the oldest profession and it will probably be around for many a year to come. So lets stop throwing rocks at the whores and regulate them. Mark A. Traina

Wow, that is good. Making sex commercially legal but illegal to buy it. Why bother making it legal at all if there is a counter-law that makes it ILLEGAL to buy it? Makes no sense. You exchange the time and effort from going after prostitutes to arresting johns. What genius thought of that? Certainly not one who wants to allow prostitution to be legal. Want to make prostitution legal and safe? Allow brothels to be legal and staff them with security and cameras. Course, the clients would have to consent, but hey, anything is possible. Employ real policemen who know how to monitor preditory behavior. Now I know that may not do much to deter anyone from hurting someone, but it would sure make anyone think twice with security nearby and watching. And security would have to be watching to help identify when someone is really in trouble and cannot call for help or is physically contained so they cannot press a security button. So there is the enigma- you can have security cameras in public places, but not where someone is indecently exposed. I don't care for the business of prostitution, but far be it for me to deny anyone. There are many issues to consider on both sides. In some countries, it is still a big money maker and certainly not without problems. Since prostitutes obviously make money, they should pay taxes...like everyone else. And like alcohol, when it was outlawed, there were many problems. Now alcohol is legal and it is still with problems, so seriously, there is a lot to consider. When people are getting raped even though they are in the business of sex, it does not mean they deserve to be hurt on the job. At least in a legal brothel, the establishment will have some record of identifiable information to their clients- when something goes wrong, it is available to investigate. Better than looking for a person with some identifiable information, including a name, than someone who does not have to give any information at all...it is something to think about.

Making prostitution legal would be avery good thing. It should be regulated like every other business. Prostitues should have to maitain their health status, pay taxes and be able to avertise their services in appropriate adult venues. Hell prostitution is the oldest profession and since it ain't going away lets regulate it. mark a traina

I remember patrolling the off limits areas of a major city in Japan as a Air Policeman in the US Air Force during our occupation period when prostitution in all of Japan was not only legal it also was the biggest industry in the nation.

Having spend thousands of hours not all patrolling the street I also spoke freely with hundreds of the working girls located there. These girl were required to carry a current health card as well as report timely for required medical check-ups.

With all these requirements, I don???t see how the business could be considered safer simply by sake of being legal. I believe such statement would be incorrect.

Legalizing is the best way to get some government control and taxes out of a business that has been around since the beginning of time and is not going anywhere. The professsion is dangerous by nature, as one succombs themselves to an intimate situation with a stranger of the opposite sex, so I think it is just innately dangerous to some extent. However, it it were legal, their health and disease status could be regulated, they could be taxed, and moved out of the streets...

I agree that prostitution should be legalised because I would prefer an honest transaction over the farce of dating women.

I personaly think legalizing prostitution will make it safer for both the person who exercise this old profesion and the person who exept this, legalizing means every week they have to go to a docter to test themselfs on sexualy transmitted deseases to make this job safer for there clients.Alsothe Goverment can tax them.Police has more time for real crime.
